Progress in the Neural Network Determination of Polarized Parton Distributions

We review recent progress towards a determination of a set of polarized parton distributions from a global set of deep-inelastic scattering data based on the NNPDF methodology, in analogy with the unpolarized case. This method is designed to provide a faithful and statistically sound representation of parton distributions and their uncertainties. We show how the FastKernel method provides a fast and accurate method for solving the polarized DGLAP equations. We discuss the polarized PDF parametrizations and the physical constraints which can be imposed. Preliminary results suggest that the uncertainty on polarized PDFs, most notably the gluon, has been underestimated in previous studies.

Perturbative corrections to semileptonic b decay distributions

We compute O(alpha_s) and O(alpha_s^n beta_0^{n-1}) (BLM) corrections to the five structure functions relevant for b->q l nu decays and apply the results to the moments of a few distributions of phenomenological importance. We present compact analytic one-loop formulae for the structure functions, with proper subtraction of the soft divergence.

QCD analysis of first b cross section data at 1.96 TeV

The first data on bottom quark production in p-pbar collisions at 1.96 TeV have recently been obtained by the CDF collaboration. These data probe the region of pt~0, providing a new invaluable input on the issue of the compatibility between next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD and data. We reconsider the evaluation of the b cross section, in view of recent theoretical developments, and of the latest inputs on structure function fits. We show that the new CDF measurements are in good agreement with NLO QCD. If CDF preliminary data are confirmed, a long-standing discrepancy between NLO QCD predictions and hadron-collider data can be settled.

B Physics at the Tevatron: Run II and Beyond

This report provides a comprehensive overview of the prospects for B physics at the Tevatron. The work was carried out during a series of workshops starting in September 1999. There were four working groups: 1) CP Violation, 2) Rare and Semileptonic Decays, 3) Mixing and Lifetimes, 4) Production, Fragmentation and Spectroscopy. The report also includes introductory chapters on theoretical and experimental tools emphasizing aspects of B physics specific to hadron colliders, as well as overviews of the CDF, D0, and BTeV detectors, and a Summary.

Polarized parton distributions from charged-current deep-inelastic scattering and future neutrino factories

The capabilities of a neutrino factory in the determination of polarized parton distributions from charged-current deep-inelastic scattering experiments is discussed. We present a study of the accuracy in the determination of polarized parton distributions that would be possible with such a facility. We show that these measurements have the potential to distinguish between different theoretical scenarios for the proton spin structure.

Search for the Higgs boson: theoretical perspectives

We present a short review of experimental and theoretical constraints on the mass of the Standard Model Higgs boson. We briefly illustrate the unsatisfactory aspects of the standard theory, and we present some general considerations about possible non-standard scenarios.

Indication for Light Sneutrinos and Gauginos from Precision Electroweak Data

The present Standard Model fit of precision data has a low confidence level, and is characterized by a few inconsistencies. We look for supersymmetric effects that could improve the agreement among the electroweak precision measurements and with the direct lower bound on the Higgs mass. We find that this is the case particularly if the 3.6 sigma discrepancy between sin^2 theta_eff from leptonic and hadronic asymmetries is finally settled more on the side of the leptonic ones. After the inclusion of all experimental constraints, our analysis selects light sneutrinos, with masses in the range 55-80 GeV, and charged sleptons with masses just above their experimental limit, possibly with additional effects from light gauginos. The phenomenological implications of this scenario are discussed.

Physics at the front-end of a neutrino factory: a quantitative appraisal

We present a quantitative appraisal of the physics potential for neutrino experiments at the front-end of a muon storage ring. We estimate the forseeable accuracy in the determination of several interesting observables, and explore the consequences of these measurements. We discuss the extraction of individual quark and antiquark densities from polarized and unpolarized deep-inelastic scattering. In particular we study the implications for the undertanding of the nucleon spin structure. We assess the determination of alpha_s from scaling violation of structure functions, and from sum rules, and the determination of sin^2(theta_W) from elastic nu-e and deep-inelastic nu-p scattering. We then consider the production of charmed hadrons, and the measurement of their absolute branching ratios. We study the polarization of Lambda baryons produced in the current and target fragmentation regions. Finally, we discuss the sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model.

Problems in the resummation of soft-gluon effects in the transverse-momentum distributions of massive vector bosons in hadronic collisions

We consider the resummation of soft-gluon emission in the transverse-momentum distribution of vector mesons in hadronic collisions. We find that the resummed expression in the impact-parameter formulation has an expansion in $\as$ with factorially growing terms with oscillating signs. These diverging terms arise from the small impact-parameter region of integration, and are of a subleading nature. We also obtain a closed expression for the next-to-leading logarithm resummation in $\qt$-space, and we study its analytic structure. We find in this case that, although no factorially growing terms are present, there are geometrical singularities that severely restrict the range of applicability of the resummation formula.

Theoretical Analysis of Polarized Structure Functions

We review the analysis of polarized structure function data using perturbative QCD at next-to-leading order. We use the most recent experimental data to obtain updated results for polarized parton distributions, first moments and the strong coupling. We also discuss several theoretical issues involved in this analysis and in the interpretation of its results. Finally, we compare our results with other similar analyses in the recent literature.

Heavy-Quark Production

We review the present theoretical and experimental status of heavy quark production in high-energy collisions. In particular, we cover hadro- and photoproduction at fixed target experiments, at HERA and at the hadron colliders, as well as aspects of heavy quark production in e+e- collisions at the Z0 peak.

Target mass effects in polarized deep-inelastic scattering

We present a computation of nucleon mass corrections to nucleon structure functions for polarized deep-inelastic scattering. We perform a fit to existing data including mass corrections at first order in $m^2/Q^2$ and we study the effect of these corrections on physically interesting quantities. We conclude that mass corrections are generally small, and compatible with current estimates of higher twist uncertainties, when available.
