Probing the spectrum of the Jaynes-Cummings-Rabi model by its isomorphism to an atom inside a parametric amplifier cavity

We show how the Jaynes--Cummings--Rabi model of cavity quantum electrodynamics can be realized via an isomorphism to the Hamiltonian of a qubit inside a parametric amplifier cavity. This realization clears the way to observe the full spectrum of the Rabi model via a probe applied to a parametric amplifier cavity containing a qubit and a parametric oscillator operating below threshold. An important outcome of the isomorphism is that the actual frequencies are replaced by detunings which make it feasible to reach the ultra-strong coupling regime. We find that inside this regime the probed spectrum displays a narrow resonance peak that is traced back to the transition between ground and first excited states. The exact form of these states is given at an energy crossing and then extended numerically. At the crossing, the eigenstates are entangled states of field and atom where the field is found inside squeezed cat states.

Enhanced sensing of weak anharmonicities through coherences in dissipatively coupled anti-PT symmetric systems

In the last few years, the great utility of PT-symmetric systems in sensing small perturbations has been recognized. Here, we propose an alternate method relevant to dissipative systems, especially those coupled to the vacuum of the electromagnetic fields. In such systems, which typically show anti-PT symmetry and do not require the incorporation of gain, vacuum induces coherence between two modes. Owing to this coherence, the linear response acquires a pole on the real axis. We demonstrate how this coherence can be exploited for the enhanced sensing of very weak anhamonicities at low pumping rates. Higher drive powers ($\sim 0.1$ W), on the other hand, generate new domains of coherences. Our results are applicable to a wide class of systems, and we specifically illustrate the remarkable sensing capabilities in the context of a weakly anharmonic Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) sphere interacting with a cavity via a tapered fiber waveguide. A small change in the anharmonicity leads to a substantial change in the induced spin current.

Optical Valley Hall Effect of 2D Excitons in Hyperbolic Metamaterial

The robust spin and momentum valley locking of electrons in two-dimensional semiconductors make the valley degree of freedom of great utility for functional optoelectronic devices. Owing to the difference in optical selection rules for the different valleys, these valley electrons can be addressed optically. The electrons and excitons in these materials exhibit valley Hall effect, where the carriers from specific valleys are directed to different directions under electrical or thermal bias. Here we report the optical valley Hall effect where the light emission from the valley polarized excitons in monolayer WS2 propagates in different directions owing to the preferential coupling of excitonic emission to the high momentum states of the hyperbolic metamaterial. The experimentally observed effects are corroborated with theoretical modeling of excitonic emission in the near field of hyperbolic media. The demonstration of the optical valley Hall effect using a bulk artificial photonic media without the need for nanostructuring opens the possibility of realizing valley-based excitonic circuits operating at room temperature.

Detector-Agnostic Phase-Space Distributions

The representation of quantum states via phase-space functions constitutes an intuitive technique to characterize light. However, the reconstruction of such distributions is challenging as it demands specific types of detectors and detailed models thereof to account for their particular properties and imperfections. To overcome these obstacles, we derive and implement a measurement scheme that enables a reconstruction of phase-space distributions for arbitrary states whose functionality does not depend on the knowledge of the detectors, thus defining the notion of detector-agnostic phase-space distributions. Our theory presents a generalization of well-known phase-space quasiprobability distributions, such as the Wigner function. We implement our measurement protocol, using state-of-the-art transition-edge sensors without performing a detector characterization. Based on our approach, we reveal the characteristic features of heralded single- and two-photon states in phase space and certify their nonclassicality with high statistical significance.

Photon statistics of quantum light on scattering from rotating ground glass

When a laser beam passes through a rotating ground glass (RGG), the scattered light exhibits thermal statistics. This is extensively used in speckle imaging. This scattering process has not been addressed in photon picture and is especially relevant if non-classical light is scattered by the RGG. We develop the photon picture for the scattering process using the Bose statistics for distributing $N$ photons in $M$ pixels. We obtain analytical form for the P-distribution of the output field in terms of the P-distribution of the input field. In particular we obtain a general relation for the $n$-th order correlation function of the scattered light, i.e., $g_{\text{out}}^{(n)}\simeq n!\,g_{\text{in}}^{(n)}$, which holds for any order-$n$ and for arbitrary input states. This result immediately recovers the classical transformation of coherent light to pseudo-thermal light by RGG.

Interfering pathways for photon blockade in cavity QED with one and two qubits

We theoretically study the quantum interference induced photon blockade phenomenon in atom cavity QED system, where the destructive interference between two different transition pathways prohibits the two-photon excitation. Here, we first explore the single atom cavity QED system via an atom or cavity drive. We show that the cavity-driven case will lead to the quantum interference induced photon blockade under a specific condition, but the atom driven case can't result in such interference induced photon blockade. Then, we investigate the two atoms case, and find that an additional transition pathway appears in the atom-driven case. We show that this additional transition pathway results in the quantum interference induced photon blockade only if the atomic resonant frequency is different from the cavity mode frequency. Moreover, in this case, the condition for realizing the interference induced photon blockade is independent of the system's intrinsic parameters, which can be used to generate antibunched photon source both in weak and strong coupling regimes.

Beyond sub-Rayleigh imaging via high order correlation of speckle illumination

Second order intensity correlations of speckle illumination are extensively used in imaging applications that require going beyond the Rayleigh limit. The theoretical analysis shows that significantly improved imaging can be extracted from the study of increasingly higher order intensity cumulants. We provide experimental evidence by demonstrating resolution beyond what is achievable by second order correlations. We present results up to 20th order. We also show an increased visibility of cumulant correlations compared to moment correlations. Our findings clearly suggest the benefits of using higher order intensity cumulants in other disciplines like astronomy and biology.

Sensing single atoms in a cavity using a broadband squeezed light

We investigate a single atom cavity-QED system directly driven by a broadband squeezed light. We demonstrate how the squeezed radiation can be used to sense the presence of a single atom in a cavity. This happens by transferring one of the photons from the field in a state with even number of photons to the atom and thereby populating odd number Fock states. Specifically, the presence of the atom is sensed by remarkable changing in the presence of one photon and the loss of squeezing of the cavity field. A complete study of quantum fluctuations and the excitation of multiphoton transitions is given.

Suppressing deleterious effects of spontaneous emission in creating bound states in cold atom continuum

In a previous paper [B. Deb and G. S. Agarwal, Phys. Rev. A 90, 063417 (2014)], it was theoretically shown that, magneto-optical manipulation of low energy scattering resonances and atom-molecule transitions could lead to the formation of a bound state in continuum (BIC), provided there is no spontaneous emission. We find that even an exceedingly small spontaneous decay from exited molecular states can spoil the BIC. In this paper, we show how to circumvent the detrimental effect of spontaneous emission by making use of vacuum-induced coherence (VIC) which results in the cancellation or suppression of spontaneous emission. VIC occurs due to the destructive interference between two spontaneous decay pathways. An essential condition for VIC is the non-orthogonality of the transition dipole moments associated with the decays. Furthermore, the interference between decay pathways requires that the spacing between the two decaying states must be comparable to or smaller than the square root of the product of the two spontaneous linewidths. We demonstrate that these conditions can be fulfilled by microwave dressing of two appropriately chosen molecular excited states, opening a promising prospect for the experimental realization of BIC of cold atoms.

Squeezed states of magnons and phonons in cavity magnomechanics

We show how to create quantum squeezed states of magnons and phonons in a cavity magnomechanical system. The magnons are embodied by a collective motion of a large number of spins in a macroscopic ferrimagnet, and couple to cavity microwave photons and phonons (vibrational modes of the ferrimagnet) via the magnetic dipole interaction and magnetostrictive interaction, respectively. The cavity is driven by a weak squeezed vacuum field generated by a flux-driven Josephson parametric amplifier, which is essential to get squeezed states of the magnons and phonons. We show that the magnons can be prepared in a squeezed state via the cavity-magnon beamsplitter interaction, and by further driving the magnon mode with a strong red-detuned microwave field, the phonons are squeezed. We show optimal parameter regimes for obtaining large squeezing of the magnons and phonons, which are robust against temperature and could be realized with experimentally reachable parameters.

Are Quantum Objects Born with Duality?

We study wave-particle duality by exploring for the first time effects of a quantum object's source. A single photon emitted from a pair of nonlocally entangled two-level atoms is specifically analyzed. Surprisingly, duality is found to be a conditional phenomenon depending on the photon's atomic source. It can be tuned maximum, medium, and even minimum (completely absent) by the atomic state purity through an exact quadratic relation that can be called Duality Pythagorean Theorem. The analysis shows a new way of investigating duality by accounting how the single quantum object is created. The result sheds a new light on the fundamental understanding of the completeness of wave-particle duality, and can be tested in various practical physical systems.

Exploring higher Jaynes-Cummings doublet in cavity quantum electrodynamics system with a broadband squeezed vacuum injection

We investigate the cavity excitation spectrum and the photon number distribution in a cavity QED system driven by a broadband squeezed vacuum. In an empty cavity, we show that only states with even number of photons can be measured under resonant condition since the squeezed vacuum consists of states with even number of photons only. When a single atom is trapped in the cavity, the strong coupling between the atom and cavity results in energy splittings of the system, and there exist two peaks in the cavity excitation spectrum at two-photon transition frequencies. At the central frequency, however, all photon states can be detected because of the interaction between the atom and cavity. Therefore, it can be used to detect whether a single atom is trapped in the cavity. We also show that the squeezed vacuum can promote multiphoton excitations in the cavity. Using a coherent probe field, it is possible to explore higher Jaynes-Cummings doublet even if the probe field intensity is very weak.

Magnon-photon-phonon entanglement in cavity magnomechanics

We show how to generate tripartite entanglement in a cavity magnomechanical system which consists of magnons, cavity microwave photons, and phonons. The magnons are embodied by a collective motion of a large number of spins in a macroscopic ferrimagnet, and are driven directly by an electromagnetic field. The cavity photons and magnons are coupled via magnetic dipole interaction, and the magnons and phonons are coupled via magnetostrictive (radiation pressure-like) interaction. We show optimal parameter regimes for achieving the tripartite entanglement where magnons, cavity photons, and phonons are entangled with each other, and we further prove that the steady state of the system is a genuinely tripartite entangled state. The entanglement is robust against temperature. Our results indicate that cavity magnomechanical systems could provide a promising platform for the study of macroscopic quantum phenomena.

Generation and detection of non-Gaussian phonon-added coherent states in optomechanical systems

Adding excitations on a coherent state provides an effective way to observe nonclassical properties of radiation fields. Here we describe and analyse how to apply this concept to the motional state of a mechanical oscillator and present a full scheme to prepare non-Gaussian {\it phonon}-added coherent states of the mechanical motion in cavity optomechanics. We first generate a mechanical coherent state using electromagnetically induced transparency. We then add a single phonon onto the coherent state via optomechanical parametric down-conversion combined with single photon detection. We validate this single-phonon-added coherent state by using a red-detuned beam and reading out the state of the optical output field. This approach allows us to verify nonclassical properties of the phonon state, such as sub-Poissonian character and quadrature squeezing. We further show that our scheme can be directly implemented using existing devices, and is generic in nature and hence applicable to a variety of systems in opto- and electromechanics.

Phase Control of the Quantum Statistics of Collective Emission

We report nonclassical aspects of the collective behaviour of two atoms in a cavity by investigating the photon statistics and photon distribution in a very broad domain of parameters. Starting with the dynamics of two atoms radiating in phase into the cavity, we study the photon statistics for arbitrary interatomic phases as revealed by the second-order intensity correlation function at zero time $g^{(2)}(0)$ and the Mandel $Q$ parameter. We find that the light field can be tuned from antibunched to (super-)bunched as well as nonclassical to classical behaviour by merely modifying the atomic position. The highest nonclassicality in the sense of the smallest $Q$ parameter is found when spontaneous emission, cavity decay, coherent pumping, and atom-cavity coupling are of comparable magnitude. We introduce a quantum version of the negative binomial distribution with its parameters directly related to $Q$ and $g^{(2)}(0)$ and discuss its range of applicability. We also examine the Klyshko parameter which highlights the nonclassicality of the photon distribution.

Enhancement of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in Metamaterials Using Long Range Coupling Mediated by a Hyperbolic Material

Near-field coupling is a fundamental physical effect, which plays an important role in the establishment of classical analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). However, in a normal environment the coupling length between the bright and dark artificial atoms is very short and far less than one wavelength, owing to the exponentially decaying property of near fields. In this work, we report the realization of a long range EIT, by using a hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) which can convert the near fields into high-k propagating waves to overcome the problem of weak coupling at long distance. Both simulation and experiment show that the coupling length can be enhanced by nearly two orders of magnitude with the aid of a HMM. This long range EIT might be very useful in a variety of applications including sensors, detectors, switch, long-range energy transfer, etc.

Qubit entanglement across Epsilon near Zero Media

Currently epsilon near zero materials (ENZ) have become important for controlling the propagation of light and enhancing by several orders of magnitude the Kerr and other nonlinearities. Given this advance it is important to examine the quantum electrodynamic processes and information tasks near ENZ materials. We study the entanglement between two two-level systems near ENZ materials and compare our results with the case where the ENZ material is replaced by a metal. It is shown that with ENZ materials substantial entanglement can be achieved over larger distances than for metal films. We show that this entanglement over large distances is due to the fact that one can not only have large emission rates but also large energy transmission rates at the epsilon-nearzero wavelength. This establishes superiority of ENZ materials for studying processes specifically important for quantum information tasks.

Identification of nonclassical properties of light with multiplexing layouts

In a recent contribution, we introduced and applied a detector-independent method to uncover nonclassicality. Here, we extend those techniques and give more details on the performed analysis. We derive a general theory of the positive-operator-valued measure that describes multiplexing layouts with arbitrary detectors. From the resulting quantum version of a multinomial statistics, we infer nonclassicality probes based on a matrix of normally ordered moments. We discuss these criteria and apply the theory to our data which are measured with superconducting transition-edge sensors. Our experiment produces heralded multi-photon states from a parametric down-conversion light source. We show that the known notions of sub-Poisson and sub-binomial light can be deduced from our general approach, and we establish the concept of sub-multinomial light, which is shown to outperform the former two concepts of nonclassicality for our data.
