Complete three photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference at a three port device

We report the possibility of completely destructive interference of three indistinguishable photons on a three port device providing a generalisation of the well known Hong-Ou-Mandel interference of two indistinguishable photons on a two port device. Our analysis is based on the underlying mathematical framework of SU(3) transformations rather than SU(2) transformations. We show the completely destructive three photon interference for a large range of parameters of the three port device and point out the physical origin of such interference in terms of the contributions from different quantum paths. As each output port can deliver zero to three photons the device generates higher dimensional entanglement. In particular, different forms of entangled states of qudits can be generated depending on the device parameters. Our system is different from a symmetric three port beam splitter which does not exhibit a three photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference.

Coherent-Light Boosted, Super-Sensitive, Quantum Interferometry

We present in this letter a scheme for optical interferometry. We utilize coherent-beam-stimulated two-mode squeezed light, which interacts with a phase shifter and is then squeezed again before detection. Our theoretical device has the potential to reach far below the shot noise limit (SNL) in phase sensitivity. This new proposal avoids the pitfalls of other setups, such as difficulty in creating the required resource. Furthermore, our scheme requires no complicated detection protocol, relying instead only on simple intensity measurement. Also, bright, coherent sources "boost" squeezed light, creating a very sensitive device. This hybrid scheme relies on no unknown components and can be constructed with current technology. In the following we present our analysis of this relatively straightforward device, using the operator propagation method. We derive the phase sensitivity and provide a simple numerical example of the power of our new proposal. Sensitivity scales as a shot noise limited Mach-Zehnder Interferometer, multiplied by a sub-Heisenberg contribution from the squeezed light.

Experimental violation of a Bell-like inequality with optical vortex beams

Optical beams with topological singularities have a Schmidt decomposition. Hence, they display features typically associated with bipartite quantum systems; in particular, these classical beams can exhibit entanglement. This classical entanglement can be quantified by a Bell inequality formulated in terms of Wigner functions. We experimentally demonstrate the violation of this inequality for Laguerre-Gauss (LG) beams and confirm that the violation increases with increasing orbital angular momentum. Our measurements yield negativity of the Wigner function at the origin for $\LG_{10}$ beams, whereas for $\LG_{20}$ we always get a positive value.

Photon trapping in cavity quantum electrodynamics

We propose and analyze a scheme for photon trapping in an optical resonator coupled with two-level atoms. We show that when the cavity is excited by two identical light fields from two ends of the cavity respectively, the output light from the cavity is suppressed while the intra-cavity light field is near the maximum due to the excitation of the polariton state of the coupled cavity and atom system. We also present methods for the direct probing of the trapped polariton state. The photon trapping is manifested by the destructive interference of the transmitted light and the incident light. Such photon trapping is quite generic and should be observable experimentally in a variety of cavity quantum electrodynamics systems.

Balanced homodyne detection with on-off detector systems: Observable nonclassicality criteria

Driven by single photon detection requirements especially for quantum information sciences, the theory of arrays of off-on detectors has been well developed and applied. However for a comprehensive characterization of nonclassicality one also needs phase sensitive properties. This missing link is fulfilled by the theory of phase sensitive click counting measurements. This theory is presented. It unifies the balanced homodyne detection for high intensities with the click detection in the few photon regime. We formulate and apply a hierarchy of nonlinear squeezing conditions to probe quantum effects beyond standard squeezing. Imperfections stemming from fluctuations of the local oscillator, detector efficiency, and dark count rates are considered. Experimentally accessible sampling formulas are given which can be applied without time consuming data processing. Our phase-sensitive click detection theory paves the way towards novel applications of nonclassical light in quantum metrology.

Creation and manipulation of bound states in continuum with lasers: Applications to cold atoms and molecules

We show theoretically that it is possible to create and manipulate a pair of bound states in continuum in ultracold atoms by two lasers in the presence of a magnetically tunable Feshbach resonance. These bound states are formed due to coherent superposition of two electronically excited molecular bound states and a quasi-bound state in ground-state potential. These superposition states are decoupled from the continuum of two-atom collisional states. Hence, in the absence of other damping processes they are non-decaying. We analyze in detail the physical conditions that can lead to the formation of such states in cold collisions between atoms, and discuss the possible experimental signatures of such states. An extremely narrow and asymmetric shape with a distinct minimum of photoassociative absorption spectrum or scattering cross section as a function of collision energy will indicate the occurrence of a bound state in continuum (BIC). We prove that the minimum will occur at an energy at which the BIC is formed. We discuss how a BIC will be useful for efficient creation of Feshbach molecules and manipulation of cold collisions. Experimental realizations of BIC will pave the way for a new kind of bound-bound spectroscopy in ultracold atoms.

Superradiance and collective gain in multimode optomechanics

We present a description of a strongly driven multimode optomechanical system that shows the emergence of cooperative effects usually known from systems of atom-light interaction. Our calculations show that under application of a coherent pump field the system's response can be switched from a superradiant regime to a collective gain regime by varying the frequency detuning of the pump. In the superradiant regime, enhanced optical cooling of a single vibrational mode is possible, whereas the collective gain regime would potentially enable one to achieve almost thresholdless phonon laser action. The threshold pumping power scales as 1/N.

Theory of Optomechanical Interactions in Superfluid He

A general theory is presented to describe optomechanical interactions of acoustic phonons, having extremely long lifetimes in superfluid $^4$He, with optical photons in the medium placed in a suitable electromagnetic cavity. The acoustic nonlinearity in the fluid motion is included to consider processes beyond the usual linear process involving absorption or emission of one phonon at a time. We first apply our formulation to the simplest one-phonon process involving the usual resonant anti-Stokes upconversion of an incident optical mode. However, when the allowed optical cavity modes are such that there is no single-phonon mode in the superfluid which can give rise to a resonant allowed anti-Stokes mode, we must consider the possibility of two phonon upconversion. For such a case, we show that the two step two phonon process could be dominant. We present arguments for large two step process and negligible single step two phonon contribution. The two step process also shows interesting quantum interference among different transition pathways.

Optomechanical Ramsey Interferometry

We adopt the Ramsey's method of separated oscillatory fields to study coherences of the mechanical system in an optomechanical resonator. The high resolution Ramsey fringes are observed in the emission optical field, when two pulses separated in time are applied. We develop a theory to describe the transient optomechanical behavior underlying the Ramsey fringes. We also perform the experimental demonstration using a silica microresonator. The method is versatile and can be adopted to different types of mechanical resonators, electromechanical resonators.

Coherent perfect absorption of path entangled single photons

We examine the question of coherent perfect absorption (CPA) of single photons, and more generally, of the quantum fields by a {\it macroscopic} medium. We show the CPA of path entangled single photons in a Fabry-Perot interferometer containing an absorptive medium. The frequency of perfect absorption can be controlled by changing the interferometer parameters like the reflectivity and the complex dielectric constant of the material. We exhibit similar results for path entangled photons in micro-ring resonators. For entangled fields like the ones produced by a down converter the CPA aspect is evident in phase sensitive detection schemes such as in measurements of the squeezing spectrum.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-steering using quantum correlations in non-Gaussian entangled states

In view of the increasing importance of non-Gaussian entangled states in quantum information protocols like teleportation and violations of Bell inequalities, the steering of continuous variable non-Gaussian entangled states is investigated. The EPR steering for Gaussian states may be demonstrated through the violation of the Reid inequality involving products of the inferred variances of non-commuting observables. However, for arbitrary states the Reid inequality is not always necessary because of the higher order correlations in such states. One then needs to use the entropic steering inequality. We examine several classes of currently important non-Gaussian entangled states, such as the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator, the photon subtracted two mode squeezed vacuum, and the NOON state, in order to demonstrate the steering property of such states. A comparative study of the violation of the Bell-inequality for these states shows that the entanglement present is more easily revealed through steering compared to Bell-violation for several such states.

Quantum state engineering by click counting

We derive an analytical description for the quantum state preparation using systems of on-off detectors. Our method will apply the true click statistics of such detector systems. In particular, we consider heralded quantum state preparation using correlated light fields, photon addition and photon subtraction processes. Using a post-selection procedure to a particular number of clicks of the detector system, the output states reveal a variety of quantum features. The rigorous description allows the identification and characterization of fundamentally unavoidable attenuations within given processes. We also generalize a known scenario of noiseless amplification with click detectors for the purpose of the preparation of various types of nonclassical states of light. Our exact results are useful for the choice of experimental parameters to realize a target state.

Nanomechanical Inverse Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Confinement of Light in Normal modes

We demonstrate the existence of the phenomenon of the inverse electromagnetically induced transparency (IEIT) in an opto mechanical system consisting of a nanomechanical mirror placed in an optical cavity. We show that two weak counter-propagating identical classical probe fields can be completely absorbed by the system in the presence of a strong coupling field so that the output probe fields are zero. The light is completely confined inside the cavity and the energy of the incoming probe fields is shared between the cavity field and creation of a coherent phonon and resides primarily in one of the polariton modes. The energy can be extracted by a perturbation of the external fields or by suddenly changing the $Q$ of the cavity.

Strong squeezing via phonon mediated spontaneous generation of photon pairs

We propose a scheme generating robust squeezed light by using double cavity optomechanical system driven by a blue detuned laser in one cavity and by a red detuned laser in the other. This double cavity system is shown to mimic effectively an interaction that is similar to the one for the downconverter, which is known to be a source of strong squeezing for the light fields. There are however distinctions as the phonons, which lead to such an interaction, can contribute to the quantum noise. We show that the squeezing of the output fields in the order of $10$dB can be achieved even at the mirror temperature at the order of $10$mK.

Directional superradiant emission from statistically independent incoherent non-classical and classical sources

Superradiance is one of the outstanding problems in quantum optics since Dicke introduced the concept of enhanced directional spontaneous emission by an ensemble of identical two-level atoms. The effect is based on correlated collective Dicke states which turn out to be highly entangled. Here we show that enhanced directional emission of spontaneous radiation can be produced also with statistically independent incoherent sources via the measurement of higher order correlation functions of the emitted radiation. Our analysis is applicable to a wide variety of quantum systems like trapped atoms, ions, quantum dots or NV-centers, and is also valid for statistically independent incoherent classical emitters. This is experimentally confirmed with up to eight independent thermal light sources.

Regularization of the spectral singularity in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems by all order nonlinearities: Nonreciprocity and optical isolation

Spectral singularities are ubiquitous with PT-symmetry leading to infinite transmission and reflection coefficients. Such infinities imply the divergence of the fields in the medium thereby breaking the very assumption of the linearity of the medium used to obtain such singularities. We identify saturable nonlinearity retaining contributions from all orders of the field to limit the infinite growth and regularize the spectral singularity. We present explicit numerical results to demonstrate regularization. The all order nonlinear PT-symmetric device is shown to exhibit very effective isolation or optical diode action, since transmission through such a system is nonreciprocal. In contrast, a linear system or a system with Kerr nonlinearity is known to have only reciprocal transmission. Further we demonstrate optical bistability for such a system with high contrast.

Two photon quantum interference in plasmonics - Theory and Applications

We report perfect two photon quantum interference with near-unity visibility in a resonant tunneling plasmonic structure in folded Kretschmann geometry. This is despite absorption-induced loss of unitarity in plasmonic systems. The effect is traced to perfect destructive interference between the squares of amplitude reflection and transmission coefficients. We further highlight yet another remarkable potential of coincidence measurements as a probe with better resolution as compared to standard spectroscopic techniques. The finer features show up in both angle resolved and frequency resolved studies.

Correlation measurements with on-off detectors

We present a general method to detect nonclassical radiation fields with systems of on-off detectors. We especially study higher order correlations for the identification of nonclassical radiation. This allows us to directly characterize quantum correlations by the statistics measured with systems of on-off detectors. Additionally, we generalize our method to multiple detector systems for measurements of correlations between light fields. We also consider multi-mode radiation fields and isolate nonclassicality in terms of the space time correlations. Finally, we present results for the quantum statistics using on-off detectors operating in nonlinear detection modes.
