Transport and Quantum Walk of Nonclassical Light in Coupled Waveguides

We study the transport and quantum walk of nonclassical light in an array of coupled waveguides which have novel properties like very low decoherence and thus making them ideal for storage of quantum information. We show how squeezing gets turned over from one waveguide to another. We further show how input nonclassical light can generate entanglement among different waveguides. Our results involve both first quantization due to array structure and second quantization due to the quantum nature of fields and can also be used to discuss the Talbot effect in the quantum regime.

Sub-Rayleigh Quantum Imaging Using Single Photon Sources

We propose a technique capable of imaging a distinct physical object with sub-Rayleigh resolution in an ordinary far-field imaging setup using single-photon sources and linear optical tools only. We exemplify our method for the case of a rectangular aperture and two or four single-photon emitters obtaining a resolution enhanced by a factor of two or four, respectively.

Quantum interferometry using coherent beam stimulated parametric down-conversion

We show how stimulated parametric processes can be employed in experiments on beyond the diffraction limit to overcome the problem of low visibility obtained by using spontaneous down conversion operating in the high gain regime. We further show enhancement of the count rate by several orders when stimulated parametric processes are used. Both the two photon counts and the visibility can be controlled by the phase of the stimulating coherent beam.

A Quantum Optical Spring

We study the dynamics of the quantum optical spring, i.e., a spring whose spring constant undergoes discreet jumps depending on the quantum state of another system. We show the existence of revivals and fractional revivals in the quantum dynamics reminiscent of similar dynamical features in cavity QED. We recover in the semi classical limit the results for an oscillator whose frequency undergoes a sudden change. The quantum optical spring is conceivable for example by a micromirror under the influence of radiation pressure by a field which is strictly quantum. Our work suggests that driven systems would in general exhibit a very different dynamics if the drive is replaced by a quantum source.

Electromagnetic Field Induced Modification of Branching Ratios for Emission in Structured Vacuum

We report a fundamental effect of the electromagnetic field induced modification of the branching ratios for emission into several final states. The modifications are especially significant if the vacuum into which the atom is radiating has a finite spectral width comparable with the separation of the final states. This is easily realizable in cavity QED. Further our results are quite generic and are applicable to any system interacting with a structured reservoir.

Photon-Photon Correlations as a Probe of Vacuum Induced Coherence Effects

We present new experimental implications of the effects of vacuum induced coherence on the photon -photon correlation in the pi-polarized fluorescence in j = 1/2 to j = 1/2 transition. These effects should be thus observable in measurements of photon statistics in for example Hg and Ba ion traps.

Generation of Symmetric Dicke States of Remote Qubits with Linear Optics

We propose a method for generating all symmetric Dicke states, either in the long-lived internal levels of N massive particles or in the polarization degrees of freedom of photonic qubits, using linear optical tools only. By means of a suitable multiphoton detection technique, erasing Welcher-Weg information, our proposed scheme allows the generation and measurement of an important class of entangled multiqubit states.

Quantum Imaging with Incoherent Photons

We propose a technique to obtain sub-wavelength resolution in quantum imaging with potentially 100% contrast using incoherent light. Our method requires neither path-entangled number states nor multi-photon absorption. The scheme makes use of N photons spontaneously emitted by N atoms and registered by N detectors. It is shown that for coincident detection at particular detector positions a resolution of λ/ N can be achieved.

Solitons in interacting Dicke models of coupled cavities with two-level systems

We consider an array of coupled optical cavities, each containing a multi-atom ensemble. We show that the nonlinearity inherent in the cooperative dynamics of the atoms in each ensemble coupled to the respective cavity field allows for the formation of solitary waves. Such a prediction can be tested in state-of-the-art semiconducting photonic-crystal microcavities with embedded impurities.

Quantum Properties of a Nanomechanical Oscillator

We study the quantum properties of a nanomechanical oscillator via the squeezing of the oscillator amplitude. The static longitudinal compressive force $F_0$ close to a critical value at the Euler buckling instability leads to an anharmonic term in the Hamiltonian and thus the squeezing properties of the nanomechanical oscillator are to be obtained from the Hamiltonian of the form $H= a^†a+β(a^†+a)^4/4$. This Hamiltonian has no exact solution unlike the other known models of nonlinear interactions of the forms $a^{†2}a^2$, $(a^†a)^2$ and $a^{\dag4}+a^4-(a^{\dag2}a^2+a^2a^{\dag2})$ previously employed in quantum optics to study squeezing. Here we solve the Schrödinger equation numerically and show that in-phase quadrature gets squeezed for both ground state and coherent states. The squeezing can be controlled by bringing $F_0$ close to or far from the critical value $F_c$. We further study the effect of the transverse driving force on the squeezing in nanomechanical oscillator.

Nonclassicality and decoherence of photon-subtracted squeezed states

We discuss nonclassical properties of single-photon subtracted squeezed vacuum states in terms of the sub-Poissonian statistics and the negativity of the Wigner function. We derive a compact expression for the Wigner function from which we find the region of phase space where Wigner function is negative. We find an upper bound on the squeezing parameter for the state to exhibit sub-Poissonian statistics. We then study the effect of decoherence on the single-photon subtracted squeezed states. We present results for two different models of decoherence, viz. amplitude decay model and the phase diffusion model. In each case we give analytical results for the time evolution of the state. We discuss the loss of nonclassicality as a result of decoherence. We show through the study of their phase-space properties how these states decay to vacuum due to the decay of photons. We show that phase damping leads to very slow decoherence than the photon-number decay.

Quantum random walk of two photons in separable and entangled state

We discuss quantum random walk of two photons using linear optical elements. We analyze the quantum random walk using photons in a variety of quantum states including entangled states. We find that for photons initially in separable Fock states, the final state is entangled. For polarization entangled photons produced by type II downconverter, we calculate the joint probability of detecting two photons at a given site. We show the remarkable dependence of the two photon detection probability on the quantum nature of the state. In order to understand the quantum random walk, we present exact analytical results for small number of steps like five. We present in details numerical results for a number of cases and supplement the numerical results with asymptotic analytical results.

Entanglement by linear SU(2) transformations: generation and evolution of quantum vortex states

We consider the evolution of a two-mode system of bosons under the action of a Hamiltonian that generates linear SU(2) transformations. The Hamiltonian is generic in that it represents a host of entanglement mechanisms, which can thus be treated in a unified way. We start by solving the quantum dynamics analytically when the system is initially in a Fock state. We show how the two modes get entangled by evolution to produce a coherent superposition of vortex states in general, and a single vortex state under certain conditions. The degree of entanglement between the modes is measured by finding the explicit analytical dependence of the Von Neumann entropy on the system parameters. The reduced state of each mode is analyzed by means of its correlation function and spatial coherence function. Remarkably, our analysis is shown to be equally as valid for a variety of initial states that can be prepared from a two-mode Fock state via a unitary transformation and for which the results can be obtained by mere inspection of the corresponding results for an initial Fock state. As an example, we consider a quantum vortex as the initial state and also find conditions for its revival and charge conjugation. While studying the evolution of the initial vortex state, we have encountered and explained an interesting situation in which the entropy of the system does not evolve whereas its wave function does. Although the modal concept has been used throughout the paper, it is important to note that the theory is equally applicable for a two-particle system in which each particle is represented by its bosonic creation and annihilation operators.

Competition between Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Raman Processes

We present a theoretical formulation of competition among electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Raman processes. The latter become important when the medium can no longer be considered to be dilute. Unlike the standard formulation of EIT, we consider all fields applied and generated as interacting with both the transitions of the $Λ$ scheme. We solve Maxwell equations for the net generated field using a fast-Fourier-transform technique and obtain predictions for the probe, control and Raman fields. We show how the intensity of the probe field is depleted at higher atomic number densities due to the build up of multiple Raman fields.

Towards Heisenberg Limit in Magnetometry with Parametric Down Converted Photons

Recent theoretical and experimental papers have shown how one can achieve Heisenberg limited measurements by using entangled photons. Here we show how the photons in non-collinear down conversion process can be used for improving the sensitivity of magneto-optical rotation by a factor of four which takes us towards the Heisenberg limit. Our results apply to sources with arbitrary pumping. We also present several generalizations of earlier results for the collinear geometry. The sensitivity depends on whether the two-photon or four-photon coincidence detection is used.

Two-bit Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm using an atomic ensemble

The first optical proposal for the realization of the two-bit version of the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm [D. Deutsch and R. Jozsa, Proc. R. Soc. London A {\bf 493}, 553 (1992)] is presented. The proposal uses Stark shifts in an ensemble of atoms and degenerate sources of photons. The photons interact dispersively with an atomic ensemble, leading to an effective Hamiltonian in atom-field basis, which is useful for performing the required two-qubit operations. Combining these with a set of one-qubit operations, the algorithm can be implemented. A discussion of the experimental feasibility of the proposal is given.

A new class of exact solitary wave solutions of one dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation

We present a large family of {\it{exact}} solitary wave solutions of the one dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, with time-varying scattering length and gain/loss, in both expulsive and regular parabolic confinement regimes. The consistency condition governing the soliton profiles is shown to map on to a {\it{linear}} Schrödinger eigenvalue problem, thereby enabling one to find analytically the effect of a wide variety of temporal variations in the control parameters, which are experimentally realizable. Corresponding to each solvable quantum mechanical system, one can identify a soliton configuration. These include soliton trains in close analogy to experimental observations of Strecker {\it{et al.,}} [Nature {\bf{417}{150}{2002}], spatio-temporal dynamics, solitons undergoing rapid amplification, collapse and revival of condensates and analytical expression of two-soliton bound states, to name a few.

We calculate the characteristics of ultraslow light in an inhomogeneously broadened medium. We present analytical and numerical results for the group delay as a function of power of the propagating pulse. We apply these results to explain the recently reported saturation behavior [Baldit {\it et al.}, \prl {\bf 95}, 143601 (2005)] of ultraslow light in rare earth ion doped crystal.
