Spin polarization induced tenfold magneto-resistivity of highly metallic 2D holes in a narrow GaAs quantum well

We observe that an in-plane magnetic field ($B_{||}$) can induce an order of magnitude enhancement in the low temperature ($T$) resistivity ($ρ$) of metallic 2D holes in a narrow (10nm) GaAs quantum well. Moreover, we show the first observation of saturating behavior of $ρ(B_{||})$ at high $B_{||}$ in GaAs system, which suggests our large positive $ρ(B_{||})$ is due to the spin polarization effect alone. We find that this tenfold increase in $ρ(B_{||})$ even persists deeply into the 2D metallic state with the high $B_{||}$ saturating values of $ρ$ lower than 0.1$\times$h/e$^2$. The dramatic effect of $B_{||}$ we observe on the highly conductive 2D holes (with $B$=0 conductivity as high as 75e$^2$/h) sets strong constraint on models for the spin dependent transport in dilute metallic 2D systems.

Strongly Enhanced Hole-Phonon Coupling in the Metallic State of the Dilute Two-Dimensional Hole Gas

We have studied the temperature dependent phonon emission rate $P$($T$) of a strongly interacting ($r_s\geq$22) dilute 2D GaAs hole system using a standard carrier heating technique. In the still poorly understood metallic state, we observe that $P$($T$) changes from $P$($T$)$\sim T^5$ to $P$($T$)$\sim T^7$ above 100mK, indicating a crossover from screened piezoelectric(PZ) coupling to screened deformation potential(DP) coupling for hole-phonon scattering. Quantitative comparison with theory shows that the long range PZ coupling between holes and phonons has the expected magnitude; however, in the metallic state, the short range DP coupling between holes and phonons is {\it almost twenty times stronger} than expected from theory. The density dependence of $P$($T$) shows that it is {\it easier} to cool low density 2D holes in GaAs than higher density 2D hole systems.

Temperature and Magnetic Field Enhanced Hall Slope of a Dilute 2D Hole System in the Ballistic Regime

We report the temperature($T$) and perpendicular magnetic field($B$) dependence of the Hall resistivity $ρ_{xy}(B)$ of dilute metallic two-dimensional(2D) holes in GaAs over a broad range of temperature(0.02-1.25K). The low $B$ Hall coefficient, $R_H$, is found to be enhanced when $T$ decreases. Strong magnetic fields further enhance the slope of $ρ_{xy}(B)$ at all temperatures studied. Coulomb interaction corrections of a Fermi liquid(FL) in the ballistic regime can not explain the enhancement of $ρ_{xy}$ which occurs in the same regime as the anomalous metallic longitudinal conductivity. In particular, although the metallic conductivity in 2D systems has been attributed to electron interactions in a FL, these same interactions should reduce, {\it not enhance} the slope of $ρ_{xy}(B)$ as $T$ decreases and/or $B$ increases.

Spin reorientation and in-plane magnetoresistance of lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} in magnetic fields up to 55 T

The magnetoresistance (MR) in the in-plane resistivity is measured in magnetic fields up to 55 T in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} in the Néel state (x = 0.01) and in the spin-glass state (x = 0.03) using high-quality untwinned single crystals. In both cases, a large negative MR is observed to appear when the magnetic order is established. For x = 0.01, it is found that the MR is indicative of a one-step transition into a high-field weak-ferromagnetic state at around 20 T when the magnetic field is applied from the spin easy axis (b axis), which means that there is no spin-flop transition in the Néel state of this material; this is contrary to a previous report, but is natural in light of the peculiar in-plane magnetic susceptibility anisotropy recently found in this system. In the spin-glass state, we observe that the large (up to \sim20%) negative MR saturates at around 40 T, and this MR is found to be essentially isotropic when the magnetic field is rotated within the ab plane. Our data show that the large negative MR is inherent to LSCO in a magnetically ordered state, in which the weak-ferromagnetic (WF) moment becomes well-defined; we discuss that the observed MR is essentially due to the reorientation of the WF moments towards the magnetic field direction both in the Néel state and in the spin-glass state.

Examination of the c-axis resistivity of Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ} in magnetic fields up to 58 T

We measure the magnetic-field dependence of the c-axis resistivity, ρ_c(H), in a series of Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ} (BSLCO) single crystals for a wide range of doping using pulsed magnetic fields up to 58 T. The behavior of ρ_c(H) is examined in light of the recent determination of the upper critical field H_{c2} for this material using Nernst effect measurements. We find that the peak in ρ_c(H) shows up at a field H_p that is much lower than H_{c2} and there is no discernable feature in ρ_c(H) at H_{c2}. Intriguingly, H_p shows a doping dependence similar to that of T_c, and there is an approximate relation k_{B}T_c \simeq {1/2}gμ_{B}H_p. Moreover, we show that the data for the lowest-T_c sample can be used to estimate the pseudogap closing field H_{pg}, but the method to estimate H_{pg} proposed by Shibauchi {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 5763 (2001)] must be modified to apply to the BSLCO system.

Quantum Phase Transitions in a Cuprate Superconductor Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_{x}CuO_{6+δ}

To elucidate a quantum phase transition (QPT) in Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ}, we measure charge and heat transport properties at very low temperatures and examine the following characteristics for a wide range of doping: normal-state resistivity anisotropy under 58 T, temperature dependence of the in-plane thermal conductivity K_{ab}, and the magnetic-field dependence of K_{ab}. It turns out that all of them show signatures of a QPT at the 1/8 hole doping. Together with the recent normal-state Hall measurements under 58 T that signified the existence of a QPT at optimum doping, the present results indicate that there are two QPTs in the superconducting doping regime of this material.

A Hierarchically-Organized Phase Diagram near a Quantum Critical Point in URu2Si2

A comprehensive transport study, as a function of both temperature and magnetic field in continuous magnetic fields up to 45 T reveals that URu2Si2 possesses all the essential hallmarks of quantum criticality at temperatures above 5.5 K and fields around 38 T, but then collapses into multiple low temperature phases in a hierarchically-organized phase diagram as the temperature is reduced. Although certain generic features of the phase diagram are very similar to those in the cuprates and heavy fermion superconductors, the existence of multiple ordered hysteretic phases near the field-tuned quantum critical point is presently unique to URu2Si2. This finding suggests the existence of many competing order parameters separated by small energy difference in URu2Si2.

Effects of unreacted Mg impurities on the transport properties of MgB2

We synthesized polycrystalline MgB2 from a stoichiometric mixture of Mg and the 11 B isotope under different conditions. All the samples showed bulk superconductivity with Tc = 38~39 K. The samples containing the least amount of unreacted Mg showed the highest Tc and the sharpest transition width (Delta_Tc). A residual resistivity ratio (RRR) of ~ 5.8, and a magnetoresistance (MR), at 40 K, of 12% were obtained for these samples. Moreover, there was no upturn of resistivity in a low temperature region at 10 Tesla. The samples containing appreciable amounts of unreacted Mg showed quite different behaviors; the values of Delta_Tc, RRR, and MR were much larger. An upturn appeared in resistivity of the samples below about 50 K at 10 T and is thought to be due to the unreacted Mg.

Anisotropic Superconductivity in Epitaxial MgB2 Films

High-quality epitaxial MgB2 thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition with Tc = 39 K offer the opportunity to study the anisotropy and robustness of the superconducting state in magnetic fields. We measure the in-plane electrical resistivity of the films in magnetic fields to 60T and estimate the superconducting upper critical field Hc(0) = 24 +- 3 T for field oriented along the c-axis, and Hab(0) = 30 +- 2 T for field in the plane of the film. We find the zero-temperature coherence lengths xi_c(0) = 30 A and xi_ab(0) = 37 A to be shorter than the calculated electronic mean free path l = 100 +- 50 A, which places our films in the clean limit. The observation of such large upper critical fields from clean limit samples, coupled with the relatively small anisotropy, provides strong evidence of the viability of MgB2 as a technologically important superconductor.

Metal-to-Insulator Crossover in the Low-Temperature Normal State of Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_{x}CuO_{6+δ}

We measure the normal-state in-plane resistivity of La-doped Bi-2201 single crystals at low temperatures by suppressing superconductivity with 60-T pulsed magnetic fields. With decreasing hole doping, we observe a crossover from a metallic to insulating behavior in the low-temperature normal state. This crossover is estimated to occur near 1/8 doping, well inside the underdoped regime, and not at optimum doping as reported for other cuprates. The insulating regime is marked by a logarithmic temperature dependence of the resistivity over two decades of temperature, suggesting that a peculiar charge localization is common to the cuprates.

Resistive upper critical fields and irreversibility lines of optimally-doped high-T_c cuprates

We present the resistively-determined upper critical field H^ρ_{c2}(T) and the irreversibility lines H^ρ_{irr}(T) of various high-T_c cuprates, deduced from measurements in 61-T pulsed magnetic fields applied parallel to the c-axis. The SHAPE of both H^ρ_{c2}(T) and H^ρ_{irr}(T) depends monotonically on the anisotropy of the material and none of the samples show saturation of H^ρ(T) at low temperatures. The anomalous positive curvature, d^2 H^ρ/dT^2 > 0, is the strongest in materials with the largest normal-state anisotropy, regardless of whether anisotropy is varied by changing the carrier concentration or by comparing a variety of optimally-doped compounds.

Unconventional Transition from Metallic to Insulating Resistivity in the Spin-ladder Compound (Sr,Ca)$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$

Spin-ladder compounds make interesting analogs of the high-temperature superconductors, because they contain layers of nearly one-dimensional "ladders" consisting of a square array of copper and oxygen atoms. Increasing the number of legs in the ladders provides a step-wise approach toward the two-dimensional copper-oxygen plane, that structure believed to be a key to high temperature superconductivity. Short-range spin correlations in ladders have been predicted to lead to formation of hole pairs favorable for superconductivity, once enough holes are introduced onto the ladders by doping. Indeed, superconductivity has been discovered in the two-leg ladder compound (Sr,Ca)$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ under high pressure. Here we show that charge transport in the non-superconducting state of (Sr,Ca)$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ shares three distinct regimes in common with high-temperature superconductors, including an unexplained insulating behavior at low temperatures in which the resistivity increases as the logarithm of the temperature. These observations suggest that the logarithmic divergence arises from a new localization mechanism common to the ladder compounds and the high-temperature superconductors, which may arise from nearly one-dimensional charge transport in the presence of a spin gap.

Normal-State Hall Effect and the Insulating Resistivity of High-T_c Cuprates at Low Temperatures

The normal-state Hall coefficient R_H and the in-plane resistivity ρ_{ab} are measured in La-doped Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CuO_{y} (T_c \simeq 13 K) single crystals and La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} thin films by suppressing superconductivity with 61-T pulsed magnetic fields. In contrast to data above T_c, the R_H below \sim 10 K shows little temperature dependence in all the samples measured, irrespective of whether ρ_{ab} exhibits insulating or metallic behavior. Thus, whatever physical mechanism gives rise to insulating behavior in the low-temperature normal state, it leaves the Hall conductivity relatively unchanged.

High field study of normal state magneto-transport in the thallium cuprate Tl-2201

We present a study of in-plane normal state magneto-transport in single crystal Tl-2201 in 60T pulsed magnetic fields. In optimally doped samples (Tc ~ 80K) the weak-magnetic-field regime extends to fields as high as 60T, but in overdoped samples (Tc ~ 30K) we are able to leave the weak field regime, as shown by the behavior of both the magnetoresistance and the Hall resistance. Data from samples of both dopings provide constraints on the class of model necessary to describe normal state transport in the cuprates.

Semiclassical theory of magnetotransport through a chaotic quantum well

We develop a quantitative semiclassical formula for the resonant tunneling current through a quantum well in a tilted magnetic field. It is shown that the current depends only on periodic orbits within the quantum well. The theory explains the puzzling evolution of the tunneling spectra near a tilt angle of $30^{\circ}$ as arising from an exchange bifurcation of the relevant periodic orbits.
