Dynamic phenomena and crack propagation in dissimilar elastic lattices

Dynamic Mode III interfacial fracture in a dissimilar square-cell lattice, composed of two contrasting mass-spring lattice half-planes joined at an interface, is considered. The fracture, driven by a remotely applied load, is assumed to propagate at a constant speed along the interface. The choice of the load allows the solution of the problem to be matched with the crack tip field for a Mode III interfacial crack propagating between two dissimilar continuous elastic materials. The lattice problem is reduced to a system of functional equations of the Wiener-Hopf type through the Fourier transform. The derived solution of the system fully characterises the process. We demonstrate the existence of trapped vibration modes that propagate ahead of the crack along the interface during the failure process. In addition, we show as the crack propagates several preferential directions for wave radiation can emerge in the structured medium that are determined by the lattice dissimilarity. The energy attributed to the wave radiation as a result of the fracture process is studied and admissible fracture regimes supported by the structure are identified. The results are illustrated by numerical examples that demonstrate the influence of the dissimilarity of the lattice on the existence of the steady failure modes and the lattice dynamics.

Asymptotic modeling of the JKR adhesion contact for a thin elastic layer

The Johnson--Kendall--Roberts model of frictionless adhesive contact is extended to the case of a thin transversely isotropic elastic layer bonded to a rigid base. The leading-order asymptotic models are obtained for both compressible and incompressible elastic layers. The boundary conditions for the contact pressure approximation on the contour of the contact area have been derived from the boundary-layer solutions, which satisfy the condition that the stress intensity factor of the contact pressure density should have the same value all round the contact area boundary. In the incompressible case, a perturbation solution is obtained for a slightly perturbed circular contact area.

Analysis of the unilateral contact problem for biphasic cartilage layers with an elliptic contact zone and accounting for the tangential displacements

A three-dimensional unilateral contact problem for articular cartilage layers attached to subchondral bones shaped as elliptic paraboloids is considered in the framework of the biphasic cartilage model. The main novelty of the study is in accounting not only for the normal (vertical), but also for tangential vertical (horisontal) displacements of the contacting surfaces. Exact general relationships have been established between the contact approach and some integral characteristics of the contact pressure, including the contact force. Asymptotic representations for the contact pressure integral characteristics are obtained in terms of the contact approach and some integral characteristics of the contact zone. The main result is represented by the first-order approximation problem.

Impact problem for the quasi-linear viscoelastic standard solid model

The one-dimensional impact problem in the case of Fung's quasi-linear viscoelastic model is studied for the relaxation function of the standard solid model (or Zener model). At that, quasi-linear viscoelastic Maxwell and Kelvin-Voigt models are recovered as limit cases. The results of numerical simulations for some illustrative values of the dimensionless problem parameters are presented.

Threshold fracture energy in solid particle erosion

The effect of geometrical shape of eroding absolutely rigid particles on the threshold rate of failure has been studied. The Shtaerman-Kilchevsky theory of quasi-static blunt impact, which generalizes Hertz's classical impact theory, is used for modeling the frictionless contact interaction of an axially-symmetric particle with an elastic half-space. The incubation time fracture criterion is applied for predicting surface fracture. It is shown that there exist a critical value of the particle shape parameter such that for all its lower values the fracture energy possesses a nonzero minimal value.

Eigenfrequency correction of Bloch-Floquet waves in a thin periodic bi-material strip with cracks lying on perfect and imperfect interfaces

We analyse an asymptotic low-dimensional model of anti-plane shear in a thin bi-material strip containing a periodic array of interfacial cracks. Both ideal and non-ideal interfaces are considered. We find that the previously derived asymptotic models display a degree of inaccuracy in predicting standing wave eigenfrequencies and suggest an improvement to the asymptotic model to address this discrepancy. Computations demonstrate that the correction to the standing wave eigenfrequencies greatly improve the accuracy of the low-dimensional model.

Weight function in a bimaterial strip containing an interfacial crack and an imperfect interface. Application to Bloch-Floquet analysis in a thin inhomogeneous structure with cracks

We define a weight function in a bi-material strip containing a semi-infinite crack and an imperfect interface and analyse a problem of anti-plane shear. We then present an asymptotic algorithm which uses the weight function to evaluate the coefficients in asymptotics of solutions to problems of wave propagation in a thin bi-material strip containing a periodic array of cracks situated at the interface between two materials.

A closed-form solution of the three-dimensional contact problem for biphasic cartilage layers

A three-dimensional unilateral contact problem for articular cartilage layers is considered in the framework of the biphasic cartilage model. The articular cartilages bonded to subchondral bones are modeled as biphasic materials consisting of a solid phase and a fluid phase. It is assumed that the subchondral bones are rigid and shaped like elliptic paraboloids. The obtained analytical solution is valid over long time periods and can be used for increasing loading conditions.
