Quasimolecular electronic structure of the trimer iridate Ba$_4$NbIr$_3$O$_{12}$

The insulating mixed-valent Ir$^{+3.66}$ compound Ba$_4$NbIr$_3$O$_{12}$ hosts two holes per Ir$_3$O$_{12}$ trimer unit. We address the electronic structure via resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ir $L_3$ edge and exact diagonalization. The holes occupy quasimolecular orbitals that are delocalized over a trimer. This gives rise to a rich intra-$t_{2g}$ excitation spectrum that extends from 0.5 eV to energies larger than 2 eV. Furthermore, it yields a strong modulation of the RIXS intensity as a function of the transferred momentum q. A clear fingerprint of the quasimolecular trimer character is the observation of two modulation periods, $2π/d$ and $2π/2d$, where d and 2d denote the intratrimer Ir-Ir distances. We discuss how the specific modulation reflects the character of the wavefunction of an excited state. Our quantitative analysis shows that spin-orbit coupling $λ$ of about 0.4 eV is decisive for the character of the electronic states, despite a large hopping $t_{a_{1g}}$ of about 0.8 eV. The ground state of a single trimer is described very well by both holes occupying the bonding j=1/2 orbital, forming a vanishing quasimolecular moment with J=0.

Novel quantum spin liquid ground state in the trimer rhodate Ba$_4$NbRh$_3$O$_{12}$

Frustrated magnets offer a plethora of exotic magnetic ground states, including quantum spin liquids (QSLs), in which enhanced quantum fluctuations prevent a long-range magnetic ordering of the strongly correlated spins down to lowest temperature. Here we have investigated the trimer based mixed valence hexagonal rhodate Ba$_4$NbRh$_3$O$_{12}$ using a combination of dc and ac magnetization, electrical resistivity, specific heat, and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. Despite the substantial antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, as evident from the Weiss temperature ($θ_{\mathrm{W}}\sim -35$ to -45 K), among the Rh-local moments, neither long-range magnetic ordering nor spin-freezing is observed down to at least 50 mK, in ac-susceptibility, specific heat and ZF-$μ$SR measurements (down to 0.26 K). We ascribe the absence of any magnetic transition to enhanced quantum fluctuations as a result of geometrical frustration arising out of the edge-sharing equilateral Rh-triangular network in the structure. Our longitudinal-field $μ$SR result evidences persistent spin fluctuations down to 0.26~K, thus stabilizing a dynamic QSL ground state in Ba$_4$NbRh$_3$O$_{12}$. Furthermore, the magnetic specific heat ($C_{\mathrm{m}}$) data at low-$T$ reveal a significant $T$-linear contribution plus a quadratic $T$-dependence. A $T$-linear behavior is evocative of gapless spin excitations, while the $T^2$-term of $C_{\mathrm{m}}$ may indicate the Dirac QSL phenomenology of the spinon excitations with a linear dispersion.

Upper critical field, critical current density and activation energy of the new La1-xSmxOF0.5BiS2 (x = 0.2, 0.8) superconductor

Critical current density (Jc), thermal activation energy (U0), and upper critical field (Hc2) of La1-xSmxO0.5F0.5BiS2 (x = 0.2, 0.8) superconductors are investigated from magnetic field dependent \r{ho}(T) studies. The estimated upper critical field (Hc2) has low values of 1.04 T for x = 0.2 and 1.41 T for x = 0.8. These values are lower than Sm free LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor (1.9 T). The critical current density (Jc) is estimated to be 1.35*105 A/cm2 and 5.07 *105 A/cm2 (2 K) for x = 0.2 and 0.8 respectively, using the Bean's model. The thermal activation energy (U0/kB) is 61 K for x = 0.2 and 140 K for x =0.8 as calculated from Arrhenius plots at low magnetic field (1 T) and indicates a strong flux pinning potential which might be co-existing with applied magnetic field.
