Morris-Shore transformation for non-degenerate systems

The Morris-Shore (MS) transformation is a powerful tool for decomposition of the dynamics of multistate quantum systems to a set of two-state systems and uncoupled single states. It assumes two sets of states wherein any state in the first set can be coupled to any state in the second set but the states within each set are not coupled between themselves. Another important condition is the degeneracy of the states in each set, although all couplings between the states from different sets can be detuned from resonance by the same detuning. The degeneracy condition limits the application of the MS transformation in various physically interesting situations, e.g. in the presence of electric and/or magnetic fields or light shifts, which lift the degeneracy in each set of states, e.g. when these sets comprise the magnetic sublevels of levels with nonzero angular momentum. This paper extends the MS transformation to such situations, in which the states in each of the two sets are nondegenerate. To this end, we develop an alternative way for the derivation of Morris-Shore transformation, which can be applied to non-degenerate sets of states. We present a generalized eigenvalue approach, by which, in the limit of small detunings from degeneracy, we are able to generate an effective Hamiltonian that is dynamically equivalent to the non-degenerate Hamiltonian. The effective Hamiltonian can be mapped to the Morris-Shore basis with a two-step similarity transformation. After the derivation of the general framework, we demonstrate the application of this technique to the popular Lambda three-state system, and the four-state tripod, double-Lambda and diamond systems. In all of these systems, our formalism allows us to reduce their quantum dynamics to simpler two-state systems even in the presence of various detunings, e.g. generated by external fields of frequency drifts.

A Semi-Analytic Approach To Valuing Auto-Callable Accrual Notes

We develop a semi-analytic approach to the valuation of auto-callable structures with accrual features subject to barrier conditions. Our approach is based on recent studies of multi-assed binaries, present in the literature. We extend these studies to the case of time-dependent parameters. We compare numerically the semi-analytic approach and the day to day Monte Carlo approach and conclude that the semi-analytic approach is more advantageous for high precision valuation.

Morris-Shore transformation with unequal detunings

The aim of this paper is to analyze the MS transformation in the case of weak deviation of the condition for equal detunings, which in necessary for factorization towards set of two-state systems and set of decouple states. Some elements concerning the general solution of the MS transformation will be also discussed.

Coherent excitation of two-state system by a Lorentzian filed

This work presents an analytic description of the coherent excitation of a two-state quantum system by an external field with a Lorentzian temporal shape and a constant frequency. An exact analytical solution for the differential equation of the model is derived in terms of Confluent Heun functions. Also a very accurate analytic approximation to the transition probability is derived by using the Dykhne-Davis-Pechukas approach. This approximation provides analytic expressions for the frequency and amplitude of the probability oscillations.

Degenerate Landau-Zener model: Exact analytical solution

The exact analytical solution of the degenerate Landau-Zener model, wherein two bands of degenerate energies cross in time, is presented. The solution is derived by using the Morris-Shore transformation, which reduces the fully coupled system to a set of independent nondegenerate two-state systems and a set of decoupled states. Due to the divergence of the phase of the off-diagonal element of the propagator in the original Landau-Zener model, not all transition probabilities exist for infinite time duration. In general, apart from some special cases, only the transition probabilities between states within the same degenerate set exist, but not between states of different sets. An illustration is presented for the transition between the magnetic sublevels of two atomic levels with total angular momenta J=2 and 1.

Optimum pulse shapes for stimulated Raman adiabatic passage

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP), driven with pulses of optimum shape and delay has the potential of reaching fidelities high enough to make it suitable for fault-tolerant quantum information processing. The optimum pulse shapes are obtained upon reduction of STIRAP to effective two-state systems. We use the Dykhne-Davis-Pechukas (DDP) method to minimize nonadiabatic transitions and to maximize the fidelity of STIRAP. This results in a particular relation between the pulse shapes of the two fields driving the Raman process. The DDP-optimized version of STIRAP maintains its robustness against variations in the pulse intensities and durations, the single-photon detuning and possible losses from the intermediate state.
