A Poincaré Covariant Current Operator for Low and High Energy Phenomena

Within front-form dynamics and in the Breit frame where initial and final three-momenta of the system are directed along the $z$ axis, Poincaré covariance constrains the current operator only through kinematical rotations around the $z$ axis. Therefore, in this frame the current can be taken in the one-body form. Applications to deep inelastic structure functions in an exactly solvable model and to the deuteron magnetic form factor are presented.

Electromagnetic and weak current operators for interacting systems within the front-form dynamics

Electromagnetic and weak current operators for interacting systems should properly commute with the Poincaré generators and satisfy Hermiticity. The electromagnetic current should also satisfy ${\cal P}$ and ${\cal T}$ covariance and continuity equation. We show that in front-form dynamics the current can be constructed from auxiliary operators, defined in a Breit frame where initial and final three-momenta of the system are directed along the $z$ axis. Poincaré covariance constraints reduce for auxiliary operators to the ones imposed only by kinematical rotations around the $z$ axis; while Hermiticity requires a suitable behaviour of the auxiliary operators under rotations by $π$ around the $x$ or $y$ axes. Applications to deep inelastic structure functions and electromagnetic form factors are discussed. Elastic and transition form factors can be extracted without any ambiguity and in the elastic case the continuity equation is automatically satisfied, once Poincaré, ${\cal P}$ and ${\cal T}$ covariance, together with Hermiticity, are imposed.

Nucleon generalized polarizabilities within a relativistic Constituent Quark Model

Nucleon generalized polarizabilities are investigated within a relativistic framework, defining such quantities through a Lorentz covariant multipole expansion of the amplitude for virtual Compton scattering. The key physical ingredients in the calculation of the nucleon polarizabilities are the Lorentz invariant reduced matrix elements of the electromagnetic transition current, which can be evaluated from off-energy-shell helicity amplitudes. The evolution of the proton paramagnetic polarizability, $β_{para}(q)$, as a function of the virtual-photon three-momentum transfer $ q,$ is explicitly evaluated within a relativistic constituent quark model by adopting transition form factors obtained in the light-front formalism. The discussion is focussed on the role played by the effects due to the relativistic approach and to the transition form factors, derived within different models.

Deep inelastic scattering and final state interaction in an exactly solvable relativistic model

In the theory of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) the final state interaction (FSI) between the struck quark and the remnants of the target is usually assumed to be negligible in the Bjorken limit. This assumption, still awaiting a full validation within nonperturbative QCD, is investigated in a model composed by two relativistic particles, interacting via a relativistic harmonic oscillator potential, within light-cone hamiltonian dynamics. An electromagnetic current operator whose matrix elements behave properly under Poincaré transformations is adopted. It is shown that: i) the parton model is recovered, once the standard parton model assumptions are adopted; and ii) when relativistic, interacting eigenfunctions are exactly taken into account for both the initial and final states, the values of the structure functions, averaged over small, but finite intervals of the Bjorken variable $x$, coincide with the results of the parton model in the Bjorken limit.

Neutron electromagnetic form factors and inclusive scattering of polarized electrons by polarized $^{3}$He and $^{3}$H targets

The electromagnetic inclusive responses of polarized $^{3}$He and $^{3}$H are thoroughly investigated at the quasielastic peak for squared momentum transfers up to $2 (GeV/c)^2$, within the plane wave impulse approximation. Great emphasys is put on the effects in the bound-state due to different two- and three-body nuclear forces, and to the Coulomb interaction as well. A careful analysis of the polarized responses allows to select possible experiments for minimizing the model dependence in the extraction of the neutron electromagnetic form factors. In particular, the relevant role played by the proton in the transverse-longitudinal response of polarized $^{3}$He, at low momentum transfer, can be utilized for obtaining valuable information on the proton contribution to the total polarized response and eventually on the neutron charge form factor.
