A Density Matrix Renormalization Group Approach to an Asymptotically Free Model with Bound States

We apply the DMRG method to the 2 dimensional delta function potential which is a simple quantum mechanical model with asymptotic freedom and formation of bound states. The system block and the environment block of the DMRG contain the low energy and high energy degrees of freedom, respectively. The ground state energy and the lowest excited states are obtained with very high accuracy. We compare the DMRG method with the Similarity RG method and propose its generalization to field theoretical models in high energy physics.

The Density Matrix Renormalization Group applied to single-particle Quantum Mechanics

A simplified version of White's Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) algorithm has been used to find the ground state of the free particle on a tight-binding lattice. We generalize this algorithm to treat the tight-binding particle in an arbitrary potential and to find excited states. We thereby solve a discretized version of the single-particle Schrödinger equation, which we can then take to the continuum limit. This allows us to obtain very accurate results for the lowest energy levels of the quantum harmonic oscillator, anharmonic oscillator and double-well potential. We compare the DMRG results thus obtained with those achieved by other methods.

Phase Diagram of the 2-Leg Heisenberg Ladder with Alternating Dimerization

Using the Lanczos method we determine the phase diagram of the 2-leg AF-Heisenberg ladder with alternating dimerization. It consists of a resonating valence bond phase and a dimer phase separated by a critical line. Our results are in good agreement with previous conjectures obtained with the non linear sigma model.

Diagonal Ladders: A New Class of Models for Strongly Coupled Electron Systems

We introduce a class of models defined on ladders with a diagonal structure generated by $n_p$ plaquettes. The case $n_p=1$ corresponds to the necklace ladder and has remarkable properties which are studied using DMRG and recurrent variational ansatzes. The AF Heisenberg model on this ladder is equivalent to the alternating spin-1/spin-1/2 AFH chain which is known to have a ferrimagnetic ground state (GS). For doping 1/3 the GS is a fully doped (1,1) stripe with the holes located mostly along the principal diagonal while the minor diagonals are occupied by spin singlets. This state can be seen as a Mott insulator of localized Cooper pairs on the plaquettes. A physical picture of our results is provided by a $t_p-J_p$ model of plaquettes coupled diagonally with a hopping parameter $t_d$. In the limit $t_d \to \infty$ we recover the original $t-J$ model on the necklace ladder while for weak hopping parameter the model is easily solvable. The GS in the strong hopping regime is essentially an "on link" Gutzwiller projection of the weak hopping GS. We generalize the $t_p-J_p-t_d$ model to diagonal ladders with $n_p >1$ and the 2D square lattice. We use in our construction concepts familiar in Statistical Mechanics as medial graphs and Bratelli diagrams.

The Matrix Product Approach to Quantum Spin Ladders

We present a manifestly rotational invariant formulation of the matrix product method valid for spin chains and ladders. We apply it to 2 legged spin ladders with spins 1/2, 1 and 3/2 and different magnetic structures labelled by the exchange coupling constants, which can be ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic along the legs and the rungs of the ladder We compute ground state energy densities, correlation lengths and string order parameters. We present numerical evidence of the duality properties of the 3 different non ferromagnetic spin 1/2 ladders. We show that the long range topological order characteristic of isolated spin 1 chains is broken by the interchain coupling. The string order correlation function decays exponentially with a finite correlation length that we compute. A physical picture of the spin 1 ladder is given in terms of a collection of resonating spin 1 chains. Finally for ladders with spin equal or greater than 3/2 we define a class of AKLT states whose matrix product coefficients are given by 9-j symbols.

Equivalence of the Variational Matrix Product Method and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group applied to Spin Chains

We present a rotationally invariant matrix product method (MPM) of isotropic spin chains. This allows us to deal with a larger number of variational MPM parameters than those considered earlier by other authors. We also show the relation between the MPM and the DMRG method of White. In our approach the eigenstates of the density matrix associated with the MPM are used as variational parameters together with the standard MPM parameters. We compute the ground state energy density and the spin correlation length of the spin 1 Heisenberg chain.

The Dimer-Hole-RVB State of the 2-Leg t-J Ladder: A Recurrent Variational Ansatz

We present a variational treatment of the ground state of the 2-leg t-J ladder, which combines the dimer and the hard-core boson models into one effective model. This model allows us to study the local structure of the hole pairs as a function of doping. A second order recursion relation is used to generate the variational wave function, which substantially simplifies the computations. We obtain good agreement with numerical density matrix renormalization group results for the ground state energy in the strong coupling regime. We find that the local structure of the pairs depends upon whether the ladder is slightly or strongly dopped.

On the Application of the Non Linear Sigma Model to Spin Chains and Spin Ladders

We review the non linear sigma model approach (NLSM) to spin chains and spin ladders, presenting new results. The generalization of the Haldane's map to ladders in the Hamiltonian approach, give rise to different values of the $θ$ parameter depending on the spin S, the number of legs $n_{\ell}$ and the choice of blocks needed to built up the NLSM fields. For rectangular blocks we obtain $θ= 0 $ or $2 πS$ depending on wether $n_{\ell}$, is even or odd, while for diagonal blocks we obtain $θ= 2 πS n_{\ell}$. Both results agree modulo $2 π$, and yield the same prediction, namely that even ( resp. odd) ladders are gapped (resp. gapless). For even legged ladders we show that the spin gap collapses exponentially with $n_{\ell}$ and we propose a finite size correction to the gap formula recently derived by Chakravarty using the 2+1 NSLM, which gives a good fit of numerical results. We show the existence of a Haldane phase in the two legged ladder using diagonal blocks and finally we consider the phase diagram of dimerized ladders.

The Density Matrix Renormalization Group Method applied to Interaction Round a Face Hamiltonians

Given a Hamiltonian with a continuous symmetry one can generally factorize that symmetry and consider the dynamics on invariant Hilbert Spaces. In Statistical Mechanics this procedure is known as the vertex-IRF map, and in certain cases, like rotational invariant Hamiltonians, can be implemented via group theoretical techniques. Using this map we translate the DMRG method, which applies to 1d vertex Hamiltonians, into a formulation adequate to study IRF Hamiltonians. The advantage of the IRF formulation of the DMRG method ( we name it IRF-DMRG), is that the dimensions of the Hilbert Spaces involved in numerical computations are smaller than in the vertex-DMRG, since the degeneracy due to the symmetry has been eliminated. The IRF-DMRG admits a natural and geometric formulation in terms of the paths or string algebras used in Exactly Integrable Systems and Conformal Field Theory. We illustrate the IRF-DMRG method with the study of the SOS model which corresponds to the spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain and the RSOS models with Coxeter diagram of type A, which correspond to the quantum group invariant XXZ chain.

Snakes and Ladders

We map spin ladders with $n_l$ legs and couplings $J'$ across all rungs and $J(1 \pm γ)$ along the legs, staggered in both directions, to a sigma model. Setting its $θ= (2m+1)π$ (where it is known to be gapless), we locate the critical curves in the $γ$ versus ${J'\over J}$ plane at each $n_l$, and spin $S$. The phase diagram is rich and has some surprises: when two gapped chains are suitably coupled, the combination becomes gapless. With $n_l, γ$ and $J'/J$ to control, the prospects for experimentally observing any one of these equivalent transitions seem bright. We discuss the order parameters and the behavior of holes in the RVB description.

Graph Quantum Groups

We define a new mathematical structure ( graph quantum group) which combines the tower of algebras associated with a graph ${\cal G}$ and the structure of a Hopf algebra {\cal A}. In this structure Ocneanu's string operators become Hopf algebra intertwiners. We present some examples of graph quantum groups.

On the integrability of N=2 supersymmetric massive theories

In this paper we propose a criteria to establish the integrability of N=2 supersymmetric massive theories. The basic data required are the vacua and the spectrum of Bogomolnyi solitons, which can be neatly encoded in a graph (nodes=vacua and links= Bogomolnyi solitons). Integrability is then equivalent to the existence of solutions of a generalized Yang-Baxter equation which is built up from the graph (graph-Yang-Baxter equation). We solve this equation for two general types of graphs: circular and daisy, proving, in particular, the inte- grability of the following Landau-Ginzburg superpotentials: A_n(t_1), A_n(t_2), D_n(τ),E_6(t_7), E_8(t_16). For circular graphs the solutions are intertwiners of the affine Hopf algebra $\tilde(U)_q(A^{(1)}_1)$, while for daisy graphs the solution corresponds to a susy generalization of the Boltzmann weights of the chiral Potts model in the trigonometric regime. A chiral Potts like solution is conjectured for the more tricky case $ D_n(t_2)$. The scattering theory of circular models, for instance $A_n(t_1)$ or $D_n(τ)$, is Toda like. The physical spectrum of daisy models, as $A_n(t_2), E_6(t_7)$ or $E_8(t_16)$, is given by confined states of radial solitons. The scattering theory of the confined states is again Toda like. Bootstrap factors for the confined solitons are given by fusing the susy chiral Potts S-matrices of the elementary constituents, i.e. the radial solitons of the daisy graph.

On the integrability of N=2 Landau-Ginzburg models: A graph generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation

The study of the integrability properties of the N=2 Landau- Ginzburg models leads naturally to a graph generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation which synthetizes the well known vertex and RSOS Yang-Baxter equations. A non trivial solution of this equation is found for the $t_2$ perturbation of the A-models, which turns out to be intimately related to the Boltzmann weights of a Chiral- Potts model.

Spin-Anisotropy Commensurable Chains: Quantum Group Symmetries and N=2 SUSY

In this paper we consider a class of the 2D integrable models. These models are higher spin XXZ chains with an extra condition of the commensurability between spin and anisotropy. The mathematics underlying this commensurability is provided by the quantum groups with deformation parameter being an Nth root of unity. Our discussion covers a range of topics including new integrable deformations, thermodynamics, conformal behaviour, S-matrices and magnetization. The emerging picture strongly depends on the N-parity. For the N even case at the commensurable point, S-matrices factorize into N=2 supersymmetric Sine-Gordon matrix and an RSOS piece. The physics of the N odd case is rather different. Here, the supersymmetry does not manifest itself and the bootstrap hypothesis fails. Away from the commensurable point, we find an unusual behaviour. The magnetization of our chains depends on the sign of the external magnetic field.
