dS/CFT correspondence on a brane

We study branes moving in an AdS Schwarzschild black hole background. When the brane tension exceeds a critical value, the induced metric on the brane is of FRW type and asymptotically de Sitter. We discuss the relevance of such configurations to dS/CFT correspondence. When the black hole mass reaches a critical value that depends on the brane tension, the brane interpolates in the infinite past and future between a dS space and a finite space of zero Hubble constant. This corresponds to a cosmological evolution without a Big Bang or a Big Crunch. Moreover, the central charge of the CFT dual to the dS brane enters the Cardy-Verlinde formula that gives the entropy of the thermal CFT dual to the bulk AdS black hole.

A brane in five-dimensional Minkowski space

We discuss the propagation of gravity in five-dimensional Minkowski space in the presence of a four-dimensional brane. We show that there exists a solution to the wave equation that leads to a propagator exhibiting four-dimensional behavior at low energies (long distances) with five-dimensional effects showing up as corrections at high energies (short distances). We compare our results with propagators derived in previous analyses exhibiting five-dimensional behavior at low energies. We show that different solutions correspond to different physical systems.

Universality and a generalized C-function in CFTs with AdS Duals

We argue that the thermodynamics of conformal field theories with AdS duals exhibits a remarkable universality. At strong coupling, a Cardy-Verlinde entropy formula holds even when R-charges or bulk supergravity scalars are turned on. In such a setting, the Casimir entropy can be identified with a generalized C-function that changes monotonically with temperature as well as when non-trivial bulk scalar fields are introduced. We generalize the Cardy-Verlinde formula to cases where no subextensive part of the energy is present and further observe that such a formula is valid for the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in D=4 even at weak coupling. Finally we show that a generalized Cardy-Verlinde formula holds for asymptotically flat black holes in any dimension.

Entropy bounds, monotonicity properties and scaling in CFTs

We study the ratio of the entropy to the total energy in conformal field theories at finite temperature. For the free field realizations of {\cal N}=4 super Yang-Mills theory in D=4 and the (2,0) tensor multiplet in D=6, the ratio is bounded from above. The corresponding bounds are less stringent than the recently proposed Verlinde bound. We show that entropy bounds arise generically in CFTs in connection to monotonicity properties with respect to temperature changes of a generalized C-function. For strongly coupled CFTs with AdS duals, we show that the ratio obeys the Verlinde bound even in the presence of rotation. For such CFTs, we point out an intriguing resemblance in their thermodynamic formulas with the corresponding ones of two-dimensional CFTs. We show that simple scaling forms for the free energy and entropy of CFTs with AdS duals reproduce the thermodynamical properties of (D+1)-dimensional AdS black holes.

Multiple Gluon Effects in $q+\bar q\to t+\bar t + X$ at FNAL Energies: Semi-Analytical Results

We apply our Yennie-Frautschi-Suura exponentiated cross section formulas for the parton processes $q + {^(} \bar q {^)}{^\prime} \ra q{^\prime}{^\prime} + {^(} \bar q {^)}{^\prime}{^\prime}{^\prime} + n(G)$ to the process $q + \bar q \ra t + \bar t + n(G)$ at FNAL energies, where G is a QCD gluon. We use semi-analytical methods to compute the ratio $r_{exp}=σ_{exp}/σ_B$, where $σ_{exp}$ is our soft gluon YFS exponentiated cross section and $σ_B$ is the Born cross section. For $m_t= 0.176(0.199)$TeV, we get $r_{exp}=1.65(1.48)$, respectively, for $q=u$ for example. These results are not inconsistent with the recent observations by CDF and D0.

Multiple Gluon Effects in Fermion--(Anti)Fermion Scattering at SSC/LHC Energies

We extend the methods of Yennie, Frautschi and Suura (YFS) to compute, via Monte Carlo methods, the effects of multiple gluon emission in the processes $q+q'\to q''+q'''+n(G)$, where $G$ is a soft gluon. We show explicitly that the infrared singularities in the respective simulations are canceled to all orders in $α_s$. Some discussion of this result from the standpoint of confinement is given. More importantly, we present, for the first time ever, sample numerical Monte Carlo data on multiple soft gluon emission in the rigorously extended YFS framework. We find that such soft gluon effects must be taken into account for precise SSC/LHC physics simulations.

Renormalization Group Improved Exponentiation of Soft Gluons in QCD

We extend the methods of Yennie, Frautschi and Suura to QCD for the summation of soft gluon effects in which infrared singularities are cancelled to all orders in $α_s$. An explicit formula for the respective \rngp improved exponentiated cross section is obtained for $q+\bbar{q'}\to q+\bbar{q'}+ n(G)$ at SSC energies. Possible applications are discussed.

Radiative corrections in processes at the SSC

We discuss radiative corrections for interactions in the SSC environment. Based on the theory of Yennie, Frautschi and Suura, we develop appropriate Monte Carlo event generators to compute the background electromagnetic radiation. Our results indicate that multiple-photon effects must be taken into account in the study of SSC physics such as Higgs decay.

Multiple photon effects in $pp$ scattering at SSC energies

The Monte Carlo program SSCYFS2 is used in conjunction with available parton distribution functions to calculate the effects of multiple photon radiation on pp scattering at SSC energies. Effects relevant to precision SSC physics such as Higgs discovery and exploration are illustrated.

Multiple photon effects in fermion-(anti)fermion scattering at SSC energies

We use the theory of Yennie, Frautschi and Suura to realize, via Monte Carlo methods, the process $f\,\bbbarf\to f'\,\bbbarf'+nγ$ at SSC and LHC energies, where $f$ and $f'$ are quarks or leptons. QED infrared divergences are canceled to all orders in perturbation theory. The resulting Monte Carlo event generator, SSC-YFS2, is used to study the effects of initial-state photon radiation on these processes in the SSC environment. Sample Monte Carlo data are presented and discussed. We find that the respective multiple-photon effects must be taken into account in discussing precise predictions for SSC physics processes.
