Renormalization-Group Analysis of the Generalized sine-Gordon Model and of the Coulomb Gas for d >= 3 Dimensions

Renormalization-group (RG) flow equations have been derived for the generalized sine-Gordon model (GSGM) and the Coulomb gas (CG) in d >= 3 of dimensions by means of Wegner's and Houghton's, and by way of the real-space RG approaches. The UV scaling laws determined by the leading-order terms of the flow equations are in qualitative agreement for all dimensions d >= 3, independent of the dimensionality, and in sharp contrast to the special case d = 2. For the 4-dimensional GSGM it is demonstrated explicitly (by numerical calculations), that the blocked potential tends to a constant effective potential in the infrared (IR) limit, satisfying the requirements of periodicity and convexity. The comparison of the RG flows for the three-dimensional GSGM, the CG, and the vortex-loop gas reveals a significant dependence on the renormalization schemes and the approximations used.

Helicity Formalism for Spin-2 Particles

We develop the helicity formalism for spin-2 particles and apply it to the case of gravity in flat extra dimensions. We then implement the large extra dimensions scenario of Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos and Dvali in the program AMEGIC++, allowing for an easy calculation of arbitrary processes involving the emission or exchange of gravitons. We complete the set of Feynman rules derived by Han, Lykken and Zhang, and perform several consistency checks of our implementation.

Dual kinetic balance approach to basis set expansions for the Dirac equation

A new approach to finite basis sets for the Dirac equation is developed. It solves the problem of spurious states and, as a result, improves the convergence properties of basis set calculations. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated for finite basis sets constructed from B splines by calculating the one-loop self-energy correction for a hydrogenlike ion.

One- and two-photon resonant spectroscopy of hydrogen and anti-hydrogen atoms in external electric fields

The resonant spectra of hydrogen and anti-hydrogen atoms in the presence of an external electric field are compared theoretically. It is shown that nonresonant corrections to the transition frequency contain terms linear in the electric field. The existence of these terms does not violate space and time parity and leads to a difference in the resonant spectroscopic measurements for hydrogen and anti-hydrogen atoms in an external electric field. The one-photon 1s-2p and the two-photon 1s-2s resonances are investigated.

From QCD lattice calculations to the equation of state of quark matter

We describe two-flavor QCD lattice data for the pressure at finite temperature and zero chemical potential within a quasiparticle model. Relying only on thermodynamic selfconsistency, the model is extended to nonzero chemical potential. The results agree with lattice calculations in the region of small chemical potential.

Quasi-particle model for deconfined matter

Our quasi-particle model for deconfined matter near T_c is reviewed. The extrapolation of lattice QCD data to a finite baryo-chemical potential is discussed. Determined by the chiral transition temperature T_c, the resulting equation of state of neutral and beta-stable deconfined matter is soft and limits size and mass of pure quark stars.

Nuclear-polarization effect to the hyperfine structure in heavy multicharged ions

We have investigated the correction to the hyperfine structure of heavy multicharged ions, which is connected with the nuclear-polarization effect caused by the unpaired bound electron. Numerical calculations are performed for hydrogenlike ions taking into account the dominant collective nuclear excitations. The correction defines the ultimate limit of precision in accurate theoretical predictions of the hyperfine-structure splittings.

Evaluation of the low-lying energy levels of two- and three-electron configurations for multi-charged ions

Accurate QED evaluations of the one- and two-photon interelectron interaction for low lying two- and three-electron configurations for ions with nuclear charge numbers $60\le Z \le 93$ are performed. The three-photon interaction is also partly taken into account. The Coulomb gauge is employed. The results are compared with available experimental data and with different calculations. A detailed investigation of the behaviour of the energy levels of the configurations $1s_{1/2}2s_{1/2} {}^1 S_0$, $1s_{1/2}2p_{1/2} {}^3 P_0$ near the crossing points Z=64 and Z=92 is carried out. The crossing points are important for the future experimental search for parity nonconserving (PNC) effects in highly charged ions.

Nuclear-polarization correction to the bound-electron g factor in heavy hydrogenlike ions

The influence of nuclear polarization on the bound-electron $g$ factor in heavy hydrogenlike ions is investigated. Numerical calculations are performed for the K- and L-shell electrons taking into account the dominant virtual nuclear excitations. This determines the ultimate limit for tests of QED utilizing measurements of the bound-electron $g$ factor in highly charged ions.

Implementation of the Combined--Nonlinear Condensation Transformation

We discuss several applications of the recently proposed combined nonlinear-condensation transformation (CNCT) for the evaluation of slowly convergent, nonalternating series. These include certain statistical distributions which are of importance in linguistics, statistical-mechanics theory, and biophysics (statistical analysis of DNA sequences). We also discuss applications of the transformation in experimental mathematics, and we briefly expand on further applications in theoretical physics. Finally, we discuss a related Mathematica program for the computation of Lerch's transcendent.

Dynamical Casimir Effect in a Leaky Cavity at Finite Temperature

The phenomenon of particle creation within an almost resonantly vibrating cavity with losses is investigated for the example of a massless scalar field at finite temperature. A leaky cavity is designed via the insertion of a dispersive mirror into a larger ideal cavity (the reservoir). In the case of parametric resonance the rotating wave approximation allows for the construction of an effective Hamiltonian. The number of produced particles is then calculated using response theory as well as a non-perturbative approach. In addition we study the associated master equation and briefly discuss the effects of detuning. The exponential growth of the particle numbers and the strong enhancement at finite temperatures found earlier for ideal cavities turn out to be essentially preserved. The relevance of the results for experimental tests of quantum radiation via the dynamical Casimir effect is addressed. Furthermore the generalization to the electromagnetic field is outlined.

QED theory of transition probabilities and line profiles in highly-charged ions

A rigorous QED theory of the spectral line profiles is applied to transition probabilities in few-electron highly charged ions. Interelectron interaction corrections are included as well as radiative corrections. Parity nonconserving (PNC) amplitudes with effective weak interactions between the electrons and nucleus are also considered. QED and interelectron interaction corrections to the PNC amplitudes are derived.

Breit Hamiltonian and QED Effects for Spinless Particles

We describe a simplified derivation for the relativistic corrections of order $α^4$ for a bound system consisting of two spinless particles. We devote special attention to pionium, the bound system of two oppositely charged pions. The leading quantum electrodynamic (QED) correction to the energy levels is of the order of $α^3$ and due to electronic vacuum polarization. We analyze further corrections due to the self-energy of the pions, and due to recoil effects, and we give a complete result for the scalar-QED leading logarithmic corrections which are due to virtual loops involving only the scalar constituent particles (the pions); these corrections are of order $α^5 \ln α$ for S states.

Evidence for the absence of regularization corrections to the partial-wave renormalization procedure in one-loop self energy calculations in external fields

The equivalence of the covariant renormalization and the partial-wave renormaliz ation (PWR) approach is proven explicitly for the one-loop self-energy correction (SE) of a bound electron state in the presence of external perturbation potentials. No spurious correctio n terms to the noncovariant PWR scheme are generated for Coulomb-type screening potentia ls and for external magnetic fields. It is shown that in numerical calculations of the SE with Coulombic perturbation potential spurious terms result from an improper treatment of the unphysical high-energy contribution. A method for performing the PWR utilizing the relativistic B-spline approach for the construction of the Dirac spectrum in external magnetic fields is proposed. This method is applied for calculating QED corrections to the bound-electron $g$-factor in H-like ions. Within the level of accuracy of about 0.1% no spurious terms are generated in numerical calculations of the SE in magnetic fields.

Renormalization of the Periodic Scalar Field Theory by Polchinski's Renormalization Group Method

The renormalization group (RG) flow for the two-dimensional sine-Gordon model is determined by means of Polchinski's RG equation at next-to-leading order in the derivative expansion. In this work we have two different goals, (i) to consider the renormalization scheme-dependence of Polchinski's method by matching Polchinski's equation with the Wegner-Houghton equation and with the real space RG equations for the two-dimensional dilute Coulomb-gas, (ii) to go beyond the local potential approximation in the gradient expansion in order to clarify the supposed role of the field-dependent wave-function renormalization. The well-known Coleman fixed point of the sine-Gordon model is recovered after linearization, whereas the flow exhibits strong dependence on the choice of the renormalization scheme when non-linear terms are kept. The RG flow is compared to those obtained in the Wegner-Houghton approach and in the dilute gas approximation for the two-dimensional Coulomb-gas.

Nonresonant corrections to the 1s-2s two-photon resonance for the hydrogen atom

The nonresonant (NR) corrections are estimated for the most accurately measured two-photon transition 1s-2s in the hydrogen atom. These corrections depend on the measurement process and set a limit for the accuracy of atomic frequency measurements. With the measurement process adopted in the modern experiments the NR contribution for 1s-2s transition energy can reach 10^{-3} Hz while the experimental inaccuracy is quoted to be +/- 46 Hz.
