Opportunities for precision QCD physics in hadronization at Belle II -- a snowmass whitepaper

This document presents a selection of QCD studies accessible to high-precision studies with hadronic final states in $e^+e^-$ collisions at Belle II. The exceptionally clean environment and the state-of-the-art capabilities of the Belle~II detector (including excellent particle identification and improved vertex reconstruction), coupled with an unprecedented data-set size, will make possible to carry out multiple valuable measurements of the strong interaction including hadronic contributions to the muon $(g-2)$ and the QCD coupling, as well as advanced studies of parton hadronization and dynamical quark mass generation.

Threshold Resummation for Top-Pair Hadroproduction to Next-to-Next-to-Leading Log

We derive the threshold-resummed total cross section for heavy quark production in hadronic collisions accurate to next-to-next-to-leading logarithm, employing recent advances on soft anomalous dimension matrices for massive pair production in the relevant kinematic limit. We also derive the relation between heavy quark threshold resummations for fixed pair kinematics and the inclusive cross section. As a check of our results, we have verified that they reproduce all poles of the color-averaged q\bar{q} -> t\bar{t} amplitudes at two loops, noting that the latter are insensitive to the color-antisymmetric terms of the soft anomalous dimension.

The resummed Higgs boson transverse momentum distribution at the LHC

We apply QCD resummation techniques to study the transverse momentum distribution of Higgs bosons produced via gluon-gluon fusion at the LHC. In particular we focus on the joint resummation formalism which resums both threshold and transverse momentum corrections simultaneously. A comparison of results obtained in the joint and the standard recoil resummation frameworks is presented.

Phenomenological studies in QCD resummation

We study applications of QCD soft-gluon resummations to electroweak annihilation cross sections. We focus on a formalism that allows to resum logarithmic corrections arising near partonic threshold and at small transverse momentum simultaneously.

Electroweak vector boson production in joint resummation

We study the application of the joint resummation to electroweak boson production at hadron colliders. The joint resummation formalism resums both threshold and transverse momentum corrections to the transverse momentum distribution at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We obtain a good description of the transverse momentum distribution of Z bosons produced at the Tevatron collider.

The QCD/SM Working Group: Summary Report

This Report documents the results obtained by the Working Group on Quantum ChromoDynamics and the Standard Model for the Workshop ``Physics at TeV Colliders'', Les Houches, France, 21 May - 1 June 2001. The account of uncertainties in Parton Distribution Functions is reviewed. Progresses in the description of multiparton final states at Next-to-Leading Order and the extension of calculations for precision QCD observables beyond this order are summarized. Various issues concerning the relevance of resummation for observables at TeV colliders is examined. Improvements to algorithms of jet reconstruction are discussed and predictions for diphoton and photon pi-zero production at the LHC are made for kinematic variables of interest regarding searches for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons. Finally, several improvements implemented in Monte-Carlo event generators are documented.

Summary: Working Group on QCD and Strong Interactions

In this summary of the considerations of the QCD working group at Snowmass 2001, the roles of quantum chromodynamics in the Standard Model and in the search for new physics are reviewed, with empahsis on frontier areas in the field. We discuss the importance of, and prospects for, precision QCD in perturbative and lattice calculations. We describe new ideas in the analysis of parton distribution functions and jet structure, and review progress in small-$x$ and in polarization.

Ultrahigh energy neutrinos, small x and unitarity

The ultrahigh energy cross section for neutrino interactions with nucleons is reviewed, and unitarity constraints are discussed. We argue that existing QCD extrapolations are self-consistent, and do not imply a breakdown of the perturbative expansion in the weak coupling.

Energy flow in QCD and event shape functions

Hadronization corrections to the thrust and related event shape distributions in the two-jet kinematical region of e+e- annihilation are summarized by nonperturbative shape functions. The moments of shape functions are given by universal matrix elements in QCD, which describe the energy flow in QCD final states. We show how the nonperturbative structure of these matrix elements may be inferred from resummed perturbation theory and Lorentz invariance. This analysis suggests the same functional forms for the shape functions as were found in phenomenological studies, and sheds light on the physical significance of the parameters that characterize these functions.

Parton Distributions Working Group

The main focus of this working group was to investigate the different issues associated with the development of quantitative tools to estimate parton distribution functions uncertainties. In the conclusion, we introduce a "Manifesto" that describes an optimal method for reporting data.

Power corrections to event shapes and factorization

We study power corrections to the differential thrust, heavy mass and related event shape distributions in $e^+e^-$-annihilation, whose values, $e$, are proportional to jet masses in the two-jet limit, $e\to 0$. The factorization properties of these differential distributions imply that they may be written as convolutions of nonperturbative "shape" functions, describing the emission of soft quanta by the jets, and resummed perturbative cross sections. The infrared shape functions are different for different event shapes, and depend on a factorization scale, but are independent of the center-of-mass energy $Q$. They organize all power corrections of the form $1/(eQ)^n$, for arbitrary $n$, and carry information on a class of universal matrix elements of the energy-momentum tensor in QCD, directly related to the energy-energy correlations.

An operator expansion for the elastic limit

A leading twist expansion in terms of bi-local operators is proposed for the structure functions of deeply inelastic scattering near the elastic limit $x \to 1$, which is also applicable to a range of other processes. Operators of increasing dimensions contribute to logarithmically enhanced terms which are supressed by corresponding powers of $1-x$. For the longitudinal structure function, in moment ($N$) space, all the logarithmic contributions of order $\ln^k N/N$ are shown to be resummable in terms of the anomalous dimension of the leading operator in the expansion.

Resummation of Threshold Corrections for Single-Particle Inclusive Cross Sections

We derive threshold resummations for single-particle and single-jet inclusive cross sections, thus generalizing previous results at fixed invariant mass to a wider class of cross sections with phenomenological interest. We confirm the structure of our resummed expressions by comparison with explicit one-loop calculations for direct photons and heavy quarks.

A novel factorization for $F_L$ in the large $x$ limit

A novel factorization formula is presented for the longitudinal structure function $F_L$ near the elastic region $x \to 1$ of deeply inelastic scattering. In moment space this formula can resum all contributions to $F_L$ that are of order $\ln^k N/N$. This is achieved by defining a new jet function which probes the transverse momentum of the struck parton in the target at leading twist. The anomalous dimension $γ_{J^\prime}$ of this new jet operator generates in moment space the logarithmic enhancements coming from the fragmentation of the current jet in the final state. It is also shown how the suggested factorization for $F_L$ is related to the corresponding one for $F_2$ in the same kinematic region.

Universality of infrared renormalons in hadronic cross sections

We discuss the role of infrared renormalons in power corrections to hadronic cross sections, including their universality. We show how perturbative renormalon structure arises near kinematic boundaries in the thrust distribution, the Drell-Yan cross section and radiative B decays. The leading infrared renormalon in each case is associated with jet evolution. Demanding that the combination of perturbative and nonperturbative contributions be well-defined, we infer the form of the leading power corrections to each cross section. This is at the level $1/Q$ for the thrust distribution and Drell-Yan process, and $1/m^2$ for B decay. We discuss the universality of $1/Q$ corrections between Drell-Yan and thrust, and conclude that it is approximate, due to contributions from multijet configurations that may differ in the two cases.

Nonperturbative Corrections in Resummed Cross Sections

We show that the resummation of large perturbative corrections in QCD leads to ambiguities in high energy cross sections that are suppressed by powers of large momentum scales. These ambiguities are caused by infrared renormalons, which are a general feature of resummed hard-scattering functions in perturbative QCD, even though these functions are infrared safe order-by-order in perturbation theory. As in the case of the operator product expansion, the contributions of infrared renormalons to coefficient functions may be absorbed into the definition of higher-dimensional operators, which induce nonperturbative corrections that are power-suppressed at high energies. The strength of the suppression is determined by the location of the dominant infrared renormalon, which may be identified explicitly in the resummed series. In contrast to the operator product expansion, however, the relevant operators in factorized hadron-hadron scattering and jet cross sections are generally nonlocal in QCD, although they may be expressed as local operators in an effective theory for eikonalized quarks. In this context, we verify and interpret the presence of $1/Q$ corrections to the inclusive Drell-Yan cross section with $Q$ the pair mass. In a similar manner, we find $\exp(-b^2\ln Q)$ corrections in the impact parameter space of the transverse momentum distributions of the Drell-Yan process and $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We also show that the dominant nonperturbative corrections to cone-based jet cross sections behave as $1/(Qδ)$, with $δ$ the opening angle of the jet and $Q$ the center of mass energy.

Principal-Value Resummation for Dilepton Production

We present a new method of resummation of QCD threshold distributions to the hard scattering function of the dilepton production cross section in hadron-hadron collisions. Our formulation by-passes the infrared singularities of the QCD running coupling through a principal value prescription, and does not require an explicit infrared cut-off. The resulting large corrections exponentiate, and we discuss asymptotic properties of the exponent. We present a closed analytical formula for the resummed hard part in momentum space, and give predictions, at fixed-target energies, for the resulting cross section which is a bounded function of its kinematic variables in the entire partonic phase space.

Infrared factorization in inclusive B meson decays

We perform infrared factorization of differential rates of radiative and semileptonic inclusive decays of the B meson in the end-point region of photon and charged lepton spectrum, respectively, in the leading heavy quark mass limit. We find that the differential rates are expressed in terms of hard, jet and soft functions, which satisfy evolution equations. Solving these equations, we find expressions for the moments of the differential rates in their end-point regions, which take into account all leading and nonleading logarithmic corrections in perturbation theory, as well as large nonperturbative power corrections. Expanded to the one-loop level, our predictions coincide with the results of existing lowest order calculations for B->γX_s and B->l\barnu X_u. Nonperturbative corrections appear in our formalism from the boundary value of the soft function in the evolution equation. The soft function is a universal process-independent function, which describes the distribution of the b quark in the B meson. Its behavior in the end-point region is governed by the nonperturbative asymptotics of a Wilson line expectation value. By considering the contributions of infrared renormalons, we find an ansatz for the Wilson line, which leads to a Gaussian model for the heavy quark distribution function.
