Towards a determination of the spectrum of QCD using a space-time lattice

Progress by the Lattice Hadron Physics Collaboration in determining the baryon and meson resonance spectrum of QCD using Monte Carlo methods with space-time lattices is described. The extraction of excited-state energies necessitates the evaluation of correlation matrices of sets of operators, and the importance of extended three-quark operators to capture both the radial and orbital structures of baryons is emphasized. The use of both quark-field smearing and link-field smearing in the operators is essential for reducing the couplings of the operators to the high-frequency modes and for reducing statistical noise in the correlators. The extraction of nine energy levels in a given symmetry channel is demonstrated, and identifying the continuum spin quantum numbers of the levels is discussed.

Group-theoretical construction of extended baryon operators in lattice QCD

The design and implementation of large sets of spatially-extended, gauge-invariant operators for use in determining the spectrum of baryons in lattice QCD computations are described. Group-theoretical projections onto the irreducible representations of the symmetry group of a cubic spatial lattice are used in all isospin channels. The operators are constructed to maximize overlaps with the low-lying states of interest, while minimizing the number of sources needed in computing the required quark propagators. Issues related to the identification of the spin quantum numbers of the states in the continuum limit are addressed.

The nucleon axial charge in full lattice QCD

The nucleon axial charge is calculated as a function of the pion mass in full QCD. Using domain wall valence quarks and improved staggered sea quarks, we present the first calculation with pion masses as light as 354 MeV and volumes as large as (3.5 fm)^3. We show that finite volume effects are small for our volumes and that a constrained fit based on finite volume chiral perturbation theory agrees with experiment within 7% statistical errors.

Hadronic physics with domain-wall valence and improved staggered sea quarks

With the advent of chiral fermion formulations, the simulation of light valence quarks has finally become realistic for numerical simulations of lattice QCD. The simulation of light dynamical quarks, however, remains one of the major challenges and is still an obstacle to realistic simulations. We attempt to meet this challenge using a hybrid combination of Asqtad sea quarks and domain-wall valence quarks. Initial results for the proton form factor and the nucleon axial coupling are presented.

Analysis of $N^{\star}$ spectra using matrices of correlation functions based on irreducible baryon operators

We present results for ground and excited-state nucleon masses in quenched lattice QCD using anisotropic lattices. Group theoretical constructions of local and nonlocal straight-link irreducible operators are used to obtain suitable sources and sinks. Matrices of correlation functions are diagonalized to determine the eigenvectors. Both chi-square fitting and Bayesian inference with an entropic prior are used to extract masses from the correlation functions in a given channel. We observe clear separation of the excited state masses from the ground state mass. States of spin >= 5/2 have been isolated by use of G_2 operators.

Baryonic sources using irreducible representations of the double-covered octahedral group

Irreducible representations (IRs) of the double-covered octahedral group are used to construct lattice source and sink operators for three-quark baryons. The goal is to achieve a good coupling to higher spin states as well as ground states. Complete sets of local and nonlocal straight-link operators are explicitly shown for isospin 1/2 and 3/2 baryons. The orthogonality relations of the IR operators are confirmed in a quenched lattice simulation.

Calculating weak matrix elements using HYP staggered fermions

We present preliminary results of weak matrix elements relevant to CP violation calculated using the HYP (II) staggered fermions. Since the complete set of matching coefficients at the one-loop level became available recently, we have constructed lattice operators with all the $g^2$ corrections included. The main results include both $ΔI = 3/2$ and $ΔI = 1/2$ contributions.

Staggered domain wall fermions

Staggered Domain Wall Fermions (SDWF) combine the attractive chiral properties of staggered fermions with those of domain wall fermions. SDWF describe four flavors with exact U(1)xU(1) flavor chiral symmetry. An extra lattice dimension is introduced and the full SU(4)xSU(4) flavor chiral symmetry is recovered as its size is increased. Here, the free theory of SDWF is described and a preliminary discussion of the interacting case is presented. SDWF may be well suited for numerical simulation of lattice QCD thermodynamics.

Results of the Survey on the Future of HEP

The Young Physicists Panel (YPP) summarizes results from their Survey on the Future of High Energy Physics, which was conducted from July 2 to July 15, 2001. Over 1500 physicists from around the world, both young and tenured, responded to the survey. We first describe the origin, design, and advertisement of the survey, and then present the demographics of the respondents. Following sections analyze the collected opinions on the desire for balance in the field, the impact of globalization, the necessity of outreach, how to build the field, the physics that drives the field, and the selection of the next big machine. Respondents' comments follow the survey analysis in an appendix.
