Competition between charge-density-wave and superconductivity in the kagome metal RbV3Sb5

The interplay between charge-density-wave (CDW) order and superconductivity (SC) in the Kagome metal RbV3Sb5 is studied by tracking the evolutions of their transition temperatures, T* and Tc, as a function of pressure (P) via measurements of resistivity and magnetic susceptibility under various hydrostatic pressures up to ~ 5 GPa. It is found that the CDW order at T* experiences a subtle modification at Pc1 ~ 1.5 GPa before it is completely suppressed around Pc2 ~ 2.4 GPa. Accordingly, the superconducting transition Tc(P) exhibits a shallow M-shaped double superconducting dome with two extrema of Tconset ~ 4.4 K and 3.9 K around Pc1 and Pc2, respectively, leading to a fourfold enhancement of Tc with respect to that at ambient pressure. The constructed T-P phase diagram of RbV3Sb5 resembles that of CsV3Sb5, and shares similar features as many other unconventional superconducting systems with intertwined competing electronic orders. The strong competition between CDW and SC is also evidenced by the broad superconducting transition width in the coexistent region. Our results shed more light on the intriguing physics involving intertwined electronic orders in this novel topological kagome metal family.

Single crystal growth and magnetoresistivity study of topological semimetal CoSi

We report single crystal growth of CoSi, which has recently been recognized as a new type of topological semimetal hosting fourfold and sixfold degenerate nodes. The Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillation (QO) is observed on our crystals. There are two frequencies originating from almost isotropic bulk electron Fermi surfaces, in accordance with band structure calculations. The effective mass, scattering rate, and QO phase difference of the two frequencies are extracted and discussed.

Compensated semimetal LaSb with unsaturated magnetoresistance

By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and quantum oscillation measurements, we performed a comprehensive investigation on the electronic structure of LaSb, which exhibits near-quadratic extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) without any sign of saturation at magnetic fields as high as 40 T. We clearly resolve one spherical and one intersecting-ellipsoidal hole Fermi surfaces (FSs) at the Brillouin zone (BZ) center $Γ$ and one ellipsoidal electron FS at the BZ boundary $X$. The hole and electron carriers calculated from the enclosed FS volumes are perfectly compensated, and the carrier compensation is unaffected by temperature. We further reveal that LaSb is topologically trivial but share many similarities with the Weyl semimetal TaAs family in the bulk electronic structure. Based on these results, we have examined the mechanisms that have been proposed so far to explain the near-quadratic XMR in semimetals.

Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations of a single layer graphene under dc current bias

Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations under a dc current bias are experimentally studied on a Hall bar sample of single layer graphene. In dc resistance, the bias current shows the common damping effect on the SdH oscillations and the effect can be well accounted for by an elevated electron temperature that is found to be linearly dependent on the current bias. In differential resistance, a novel phase inversion of the SdH oscillations has been observed with increasing dc bias, namely we observe the oscillation maxima develop into minima and vice versa. Moreover, it is found that the onset biasing current, at which a SdH extremum is about to invert, is linearly dependent on the magnetic field of the SdH extrema. These observations are quantitatively explained with the help of a general SdH formula.

Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Charge-Ordering $Na_{0.34}(H_3O)_{0.15}CoO_2$:Strong Spin-Charge Coupling and Spin Ordering

Angular-dependent in-plane magnetoresistance (AMR) for single crystal $Na_{0.34}(H_3O)_{0.15}CoO_2$ with charge ordering is studied systematically. The anisotropic magnetoresistance shows a twofold symmetry at high temperature with rotating H in the Co-O plane, while a sixfold symmetry below a certain temperature ($T_ρ$). At $T_ρ$, the symmetry of AMR changes from twofold to fourfold with rotating magnetic field (H) in the plane consisting of the current and c-axis. The variation of AMR symmetry with temperature arises from the subtle changes of the spin structure. These results give a direct evidence for the itinerant electrons directly coupled to the localized spins.

In-plane substitution effect on the magnetic properties of two-dimensional Spin-gap system SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$

A series of in-plane substituted compounds, including Cu-site (SrZn$_x$Cu$_{2-x}$(BO$_3$)$_2$), and B-site (SrCu$_2$(Si$_x$B$_{1-x}$O$_3$)$_2$) substitution, were synthesized by solid state reaction. X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that these compounds are single-phase materials and their in-plane lattice parameter depends systematically on the substituting content $x$. The magnetic susceptibility in different magnetic fields, the magnetization at different temperatures, and the resistivity at room temperature were measured, respectively. It is found that the spin gap deduced from the magnetic susceptibility measurements decreases with increasing of $x$ in both Cu- and B-site substitution. No superconductivity was found in these substituted compounds.

Optical properties of $MgCNi_3$ in the normal state

We present the optical reflectance and conductivity spectra for non-oxide antiperovskite superconductor $MgCNi_{3}$ at different temperatures. The reflectance drops gradually over a large energy scale up to 33,000 cm$^{-1}$, with the presence of several wiggles. The reflectance has slight temperature dependence at low frequency but becomes temperature independent at high frequency. The optical conductivity shows a Drude response at low frequencies and four broad absorption features in the frequency range from 600 $cm^{-1}$ to 33,000 $cm^{-1}$. We illustrate that those features can be well understood from the intra- and interband transitions between different components of Ni 3d bands which are hybridized with C 2p bands. There is a good agreement between our experimental data and the first-principle band structure calculations.

Angular-dependent Magnetoresistance Oscillations in Na$_{0.48}$CoO$_{2}$ Single Crystal

We report measurements of the c-axis angular-dependent magnetoresistance (AMR) for a Na$_{0.48}$CoO$_{2}$ single crystal, with a magnetic field of 10 T rotating within Co-O planes. Below the metal-insulator transition temperature induced by the charge ordering, the oscillation of the AMR is dominated by a two-fold rotational symmetry. The amplitudes of the oscillation corresponding to the four- and six-fold rotational symmetries are distinctive in low temperatures, but they merge into the background simultaneously at about 25 K. The six-fold oscillation originates naturally from the lattice symmetry. The observation of the four-fold rotational symmetry is consistent with the picture proposed by Choy, et al., that the Co lattice in the charge ordered state will split into two orthorhombic sublattice with one occupied by Co$^{3+}$ ions and the other by Co$^{4+}$ ions. We have also measured the c-axis AMR for Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$ and Na$_{0.85}$CoO$_{2}$ single crystals, and found no evidence for the existence of two- and four-fold symmetries.

Hysteresis and Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Antiferromagnetic $Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4}$

The out-of-plane resistivity ($ρ_c$) and magnetoresistivity (MR) are studied in antiferromangetic (AF) $Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4}$ single crystals, which have three types of noncollinear antiferromangetic spin structures. The apparent signatures are observed in $ρ_c(T)$ measured at the zero-field and 14 T at the spin structure transitions, giving a definite evidence for the itinerant electrons directly coupled to the localized spins. One of striking feature is an anisotropy of the MR with a fourfold symmetry upon rotating the external field (B) within ab plane in the different phases, while twofold symmetry at spin reorientation transition temperatures. The intriguing thermal hysteresis in $ρ_c(T,B)$ and magnetic hysteresis in MR are observed at spin reorientation transition temperatures.

Dimensional crossover and anomalous magnetoresistivity in single crystals $Na_xCoO_2$

The in-plane ($ρ_{ab}$) and c-axis ($ρ_c$) resistivities, and the magnetoresistivity of single crystals $Na_xCoO_2$ with x = 0.7, 0.5 and 0.3 were studied systematically. $ρ_{ab}(T)$ shows similar temperature dependence between $Na_{0.3}CoO_2$ and $Na_{0.7}CoO_2$, while $ρ_c(T)$ is quite different. A dimensional crossover from two to three occurs with decreasing Na concentration from 0.7 to 0.3. The angular dependence of in-plane magnetoresistivity for 0.5 sample shows a \emph{"d-wave-like"} symmetry at 2K, while the \emph{"p-wave-like"} symmetry at 20 K. These results give an evidence for existence of a \emph{spin ordering orientation} below 20 K turned by external field, like the stripes in cuprates.

Metamagnetic Transition in Na$_{0.85}$CoO$_2$ Single Crystals

We report the magnetization, specific heat and transport measurements of high quality Na$_{0.85}$CoO$_2$ single crystals in applied magnetic fields up to 14T. In high temperatures, the system is in a paramagnetic phase. It undergoes a magnetic phase transition below about 20K. When the field is applied along the c-axis, the measurement data of magnetization, specific heat and magnetoresistance reveal a metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic state to a quasi-ferromagnetic state at about 8T in low temperatures. However, no transition is observed in the magnetization measurements up to 14T when the field is applied perpendicular to the c-axis. The low temperature magnetic phase diagram of Na$_{0.85}$CoO$_2$ is determined.

Doping Effects on the two-dimensional Spin Dimer Compound $SrCu_2(BO_3)_2$

A series of compounds M$_{0.1}$Sr$_{0.9}$Cu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ with Sr substituted by M=Al, La, Na and Y were prepared by solid state reaction. XRD analysis showed that these doping compounds are isostructural to SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. The magnetic susceptibility from 1.9K to 300K in an applied magnetic field of 1.0T and the specific heat from 1.9K to 25K in applied fields up to 14T were measured. The spin gap is deduced from the low temperature susceptibility as well as the specific heat. It is found that the spin gap is strongly suppressed by magnetic fields. No superconductivity is observed in all four samples.
