Disordering Transitions in Vortex Matter: Peak Effect and Phase Diagram

Using numerical simulations of magnetically interacting vortices in disordered layered superconductors we obtain the static vortex phase diagram as a function of magnetic field and temperature. For increasing field or temperature, we find a transition from ordered straight vortices to disordered decoupled vortices. This transition is associated with a peak effect in the critical current. For samples with increasing disorder strength the field at which the decoupling occurs decreases. Long range, nonlinear interactions in the c-axis are required to observe the effect.

Metastability and Transient Effects in Vortex Matter Near a Disorder Driven Transition

We examine metastable and transient effects both above and below the first-order disorder driven decoupling line in a 3D simulation of magnetically interacting pancake vortices. We observe pronounced transient and history effects as well as supercooling and superheating between the ordered and disordered phases. In the disordered supercooled state as a function of DC driving, reordering occurs through the formation of growing moving channels of the ordered phase. We find that hysteresis in V(I) is strongly dependent on the proximity to the decoupling transition line.

Static and dynamic coupling transitions of vortex lattices in disordered anisotropic superconductors

We use three-dimensional molecular dynamics simulations of magnetically interacting pancake vortices to study vortex matter in disordered, highly anisotropic materials such as BSCCO. We observe a sharp 2D-3D transition from vortex lines to decoupled pancakes as a function of relative interlayer coupling strength, with an accompanying large increase in the critical current remniscent of a second peak effect. We find that decoupled pancakes, when driven, simultaneously recouple and order into a crystalline-like state at high drives. We construct a dynamic phase diagram and show that the dynamic recoupling transition is associated with a double peak in dV/dI.

Quantum Fluctuations and Dissipation in Thin Superconducting Wires

We investigate quantum fluctuations in thin superconducting wires. We demonstrate that quantum phase slips dominate the system behavior at low temperatures and are well in the measurable range for sufficiently thin wires. We discuss the effect of dissipation, predict a new quantum superconductor-to-metal (insulator) phase transitions for wires with thicknesses in the 10-nm range, evaluate the resistance R(T) of such wires and compare our results with recent experimental findings.

Melting of Moving Vortex Lattices With Periodic Pinning

We study numerically the effects of temperature on moving vortex lattices interacting with periodic pinning arrays. For low temperatures the vortex lattice flows in channels, forming a hexatic structure with long range transverse and longitudinal ordering. At higher temperatures, a transition to a smectic state occurs where vortices wander between channels and longitudinal order is lost while transverse order remains. At the highest temperatures the vortex lattice melts into an isotropic liquid.

Vortices Freeze like Window Glass: the Vortex Molasses Scenario

We overview several recent experimental and numerical observations, which are at odds with the Vortex Glass theory of the freezing of disordered vortex matter. To reinvestigate the issue, we performed numerical simulations of the overdamped London - Langevin model, and use finite size scaling to analyze the data. Upon approaching the transition the initial Vortex Glass type criticality is arrested at some crossover temperature. Below this temperature the timescales continue growing very quickly, consistent with the Vogel-Fulcher form, while the spatial correlation length xi stops exhibiting any observable divergence. We call this mode of freezing the Vortex Molasses scenario.

The Effect of Splayed Pins on Vortex Creep and Critical Currents

We study the effects of splayed columnar pins on the vortex motion using realistic London Langevin simulations. At low currents vortex creep is strongly suppressed, whereas the critical current j_c is enhanced only moderately. Splaying the pins generates an increasing energy barrier against vortex hopping, and leads to the forced entanglement of vortices, both of which suppress creep efficiently. On the other hand splaying enhances kink nucleation and introduces intersecting pins, which cut off the energy barriers. Thus the j_c enhancement is strongly parameter sensitive. We also characterize the angle dependence of j_c, and the effect of different splaying geometries.

Disorder and Impurities in Hubbard-Antiferromagnets

We study the influence of disorder and randomly distributed impurities on the properties of correlated antiferromagnets. To this end the Hubbard model with (i) random potentials, (ii) random hopping elements, and (iii) randomly distributed values of interaction is treated using quantum Monte Carlo and dynamical mean-field theory. In cases (i) and (iii) weak disorder can lead to an enhancement of antiferromagnetic (AF) order: in case (i) by a disorder-induced delocalization, in case (iii) by binding of free carriers at the impurities. For strong disorder or large impurity concentration antiferromagnetism is eventually destroyed. Random hopping leaves the local moment stable but AF order is suppressed by local singlet formation. Random potentials induce impurity states within the charge gap until it eventually closes. Impurities with weak interaction values shift the Hubbard gap to a density off half-filling. In both cases an antiferromagnetic phase without charge gap is observed.

Ordered states in the disordered Hubbard model

The Hubbard model is studied in which disorder is introduced by putting the on-site interaction to zero on a fraction f of (impurity) sites of a square lattice. Using Quantum Monte Carlo methods and Dynamical Mean Field theory we find that antiferromagnetic long-range order is initially enhanced at half-filling and stabilized off half-filling by the disorder. The Mott-Hubbard charge gap of the pure system is broken up into two pieces by the disorder: one incompressible state remains at average density n=1 and another can be seen slightly below n=1+f. Qualitative explanations are provided.

Instability of the marginal commutative model of tunneling centers interacting with metallic environment: Role of the electron-hole symmetry breaking

The role of the electron-hole symmetry breaking is investigated for a symmetrical commutative two-level system in a metal using the multiplicative renormalization group in a straightforward way. The role of the symmetries of the model and the path integral technique are also discussed in detail. It is shown that the electron-hole symmetry breaking may make the model non-commutative and generate the assisted tunneling process which is, however, too small itself to drive the system into the vicinity of the two-channel Kondo fixed point. While these results are in qualitative agreement with those of Moustakas and Fisher (Phys. Rev. B 51, 6908 (1995), ibid 53, 4300 (1996)) the scaling equations turn out to be essentially different. We show that the main reason for this difference is that the procedure for the elimination of the high energy degrees of freedom used by Moustakas and Fisher leaves only the free energy invariant, however, the couplings generated are not connected to the dynamical properties in a straightforward way and should be interpreted with care. These latter results might have important consequences in other cases where the path integral technique is used to produce the scaling equations and calculate physical quantities.

Phase Diagram for Splay Glass Superconductivity

Localization of flux lines to splayed columnar pins is studied. A sine-Gordon type renormalization group study reveals the existence of a Splay glass phase and yields an analytic form for the transition temperature into the glass phase. As an independent test, the $I-V$ characteristics are determined via a Molecular Dynamics code. The glass transition temperature supports the RG results convincingly. The full phase diagram of the model is constructed.

Mean Field Theory of the Localization Transition

A mean field theory of the localization transition for bosonic systems is developed. Localization is shown to be sensitive to the distribution of the random site energies. It occurs in the presence of a triangular distribution, but not a uniform one. The inverse participation ratio, the single site Green's function, the superfluid order parameter and the corresponding susceptibility are calculated, and the appropriate exponents determined. All of these quantities indicate the presence of a new phase, which can be identified as the {\it Bose-glass}.

Tunnel junctions of unconventional superconductors

The phenomenology of Josephson tunnel junctions between unconventional superconductors is developed further. In contrast to s-wave superconductors, for d-wave superconductors the direction dependence of the tunnel matrix elements that describe the barrier is relevant. We find the full I-V characteristics and comment on the thermodynamical properties of these junctions. They depend sensitively on the relative orientation of the superconductors. The I-V characteristics differ from the normal s-wave RSJ-like behavior.

Simultaneous Diagonal and Off Diagonal Order in the Bose--Hubbard Hamiltonian

The Bose-Hubbard model exhibits a rich phase diagram consisting both of insulating regimes where diagonal long range (solid) order dominates as well as conducting regimes where off diagonal long range order (superfluidity) is present. In this paper we describe the results of Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the phase diagram, both for the hard and soft core cases, with a particular focus on the possibility of simultaneous superfluid and solid order. We also discuss the appearance of phase separation in the model. The simulations are compared with analytic calculations of the phase diagram and spin wave dispersion.

Competition between point and columnar disorder on the behavior of flux lines in 1+1 dimension

The behavior of flux lines in the presence of both columnar and point disorder in 1+1 dimension is investigated using Renormalization Group and world-line Quantum Monte Carlo techniques. In particular, we calculate the transverse wandering correlation function for a single boson and recover known results for point and columnar disorder separately. We then examine the existence of a localization transition of a flux line in the simultaneous presence of both types of disorder. We also perform RG for interacting flux lines in the presence of both disorder. RG indicates that the vortex glass is unstable with respect to arbitrary small amount of columnar disorder. Using QMC we find that the Bose glass transition temperature is reduced by the point disorder, in agreement with recent RG calculations. Further we find that the region posited to be an Anderson glass is completely destroyed.

Supersolids in the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian

We use a combination of numeric and analytic techniques to determine the groun d state phase diagram of the Bose--Hubbard Hamiltonian with longer range repulsi ve interactions. At half filling one finds superfluidity and an insulating solid phase. Depending on the relative sizes of near--neighbor and next near--neighbor interactions, this solid either follows a checkerboard or a striped pattern. In neither case is there a coexistence with superfluidity. However upon doping ``supersolid'' phases appear with simultaneous diagonal and off--diagonal long range order.

Exact Diag. Study of the 1D Disordered XXZ Model

We investigate the one-dimensional quantum $XXZ$ model in the presence of diagonal disorder. Recently the model has been analyzed with the help of field-theoretical renormalization group methods, and a phase diagram has been predicted. We study the model with exact diagonalization techniques up to chain lengths of 16 sites. Using finite-size scaling methods we estimate critical exponents and the phase diagram and find reasonably good agreement with the field-theoretical results, namely, that any amount of disorder destroys the superfluidity for $XXZ$ anisotropy $Δ$ between $ -1/2 $ and $1$, while the superfluidity persists to finite disorder strength for $ -1 < Δ< -1/2$ and then undergoes a Kosterlitz-Thouless type transition.

The Bose--Hubbard Model and Superfluid Staircases in $^{4}$He Films

The recent experimental observation of step-like structure in the superfluid density of $^{4}$He films on graphite is interpreted in terms of passage close to Mott insulating lobes in the Bose--Hubbard model. Plateaus develop in the superfluid density near the completion of each layer because of the He-He repulsion. We modify the Bose--Hubbard Hamiltonian, using a density-dependent He-He interaction term to model the He-substrate potential. Quantum Monte Carlo simulations yield results which agree well with the experimental data.
