Existence and characterization of edge states in an acoustic trimer Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

We report on a direct mapping of acoustic slender waveguides to the one dimensional trimer Su- Schrieffer-Heeger model, with neither chiral nor mirror symmetry. Importantly, we can choose to perform this mapping for either the acoustic velocity or pressure. We demonstrate that, for finite systems, this choice is necessarily linked to the boundary conditions. It allows for the unveiling of the edge states of the acoustic system through an edge state phase diagram. An experimental realization of our setup in the audible regime corroborates our theoretical predictions.

Topological edge-states of the PT-symmetric Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model: An effective two-state description

We consider the non-Hermitian, parity-time (PT) symmetric extensions of the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model in the topological non-trivial configuration. We study the properties of the topologically protected edge states, and develop an effective two-state analytical description of the system that accurately predicts the PT-symmetry breaking point for the edge states. We verify our analytical results by exact numerical calculations.

Transverse instability and dynamics of nonlocal bright solitons

We study the transverse instability and dynamics of bright soliton stripes in two-dimensional nonlocal nonlinear media. Using a multiscale perturbation method, we derive analytically the first-order correction to the soliton shape, which features an exponential growth in time -- a signature of the transverse instability. The soliton's characteristic timescale associated with its exponential growth,is found to depend on the square root of the nonlocality parameter. This, in turn, highlights the nonlocality-induced suppression of the transverse instability. Our analytical predictions are corroborated by direct numerical simulations, with the analytical results being in good agreement with the numerical ones.

Fast and robust quantum state transfer via a topological chain

We propose a fast and robust quantum state transfer protocol employing a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain, where the interchain couplings vary in time. Based on simple considerations around the terms involved in the definition of the adiabatic invariant, we construct an exponential time-driving function that successfully takes advantage of resonant effects to speed up the transfer process. Using optimal control theory, we confirm that the proposed time-driving function is close to optimal. To unravel the crucial aspects of our construction, we proceed to a comparison with two other protocols. One where the underlying Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain is adiabatically time-driven and another where the underlying chain is topologically trivial and resonant effects are at work. By numerically investigating the resilience of each protocol to static noise, we highlight the robustness of the exponential driving.

Fast, robust and amplified transfer of topological edge modes on time-varying mechanical chain

We show that it is possible to successfully, rapidly and robustly transfer a topological vibrational edge mode across a time-varying mechanical chain. The stiffness values of the springs of the chain are arranged in an alternating staggered way, such that we obtain a mechanical analog of the quantum Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model which exhibits a non trivial topological phase. Using optimal control methods, we are able to design control schemes for driving the stiffness parameters, such that the transfer is done with high fidelity, speed and robustness against disorder as well as energy amplification of the target edge mode.

Perfect absorption in mirror-symmetric acoustic metascreens

Mirror-symmetric acoustic metascreens producing perfect absorption independently of the incidence side are theoretically and experimentally reported in this work. The mirror-symmetric resonant building blocks of the metascreen support symmetric and antisymmetric resonances that can be tuned to be at the same frequency (degenerate resonances). The geometry of the building blocks is optimized to critically couple both the symmetric and the antisymmetric resonances at the same frequency allowing perfect absorption of sound from both sides of the metascreen. A hybrid analytical model based on the transfer matrix method and the modal decomposition of the exterior acoustic field is developed to analyze the scattering properties of the metascreen. The resulting geometry is 3D printed and experimentally tested in an impedance tube. Experimental results agree well with the theoretical predictions proving the efficiency of these metascreens for the perfect absorption of sound in the ventilation problems.

Wave propagation in a strongly disordered 1D phononic lattice supporting rotational waves

We investigate the dynamical properties of a strongly disordered micropolar lattice made up of cubic block units. This phononic lattice model supports both transverse and rotational degrees of freedom hence its disordered variant posses an interesting problem as it can be used to model physically important systems like beam-like microstructures. Different kinds of single site excitations (momentum or displacement) on the two degrees of freedom are found to lead to different energy transport both superdiffusive and subdiffusive. We show that the energy spreading is facilitated both by the low frequency extended waves and a set of high frequency modes located at the edge of the upper branch of the periodic case for any initial condition. However, the second moment of the energy distribution strongly depends on the initial condition and it is slower than the underlying one dimensional harmonic lattice (with one degree of freedom). Finally, a limiting case of the micropolar lattice is studied where Anderson localization is found to persist and no energy spreading takes place.

Dynamics of interacting dark soliton stripes

In the present work we examine the statics and dynamics of multiple parallel dark soliton stripes in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. Our principal goal is to study the effect of the interaction between the stripes on the transverse instability of the individual stripes. We use a recently developed adiabatic invariant formulation to derive a quasi-analytical prediction for the stripe equilibrium position and for the Bogoliubov-de Gennes spectrum of excitations of stationary stripes. The cases of two-, three- and four-stripe states are studied in detail. We subsequently test our predictions against numerical simulations of the full two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We find that the number of unstable eigenmodes increases as the number of stripes increases due to (unstable) relative motions between the stripes. Their corresponding growth rates do not significantly change, although for large chemical potentials, the larger the stripe number, the larger the maximal instability growth rate. The instability induced dynamics of multiple stripe states and their decay into vortices are also investigated.

Stealth acoustic materials

We report the experimental design of a 1D stealth acoustic material, namely a material that suppresses the acoustic scattering for a given set of incident wave vectors. The material consists of multiple scatterers, rigid diaphragms, located in an air-filled acoustic waveguide. The position of the scatterers has been chosen such that in the Born approximation a suppression of the scattering for a broad range of frequencies is achieved and thus a broadband transparency. Experimental results are found in excellent agreement with the theory despite the presence of losses and the finite size of the material, features that are not captured in the theory. This robustness as well as the generality of the results motivates realistic potential applications for the design of transparent materials in acoustics and other fields of wave physics.

Chaos and Anderson Localisation in Disordered Classical Chains: Hertzian vs FPUT models

We numerically investigate the dynamics of an one-dimensional disordered lattice using the Hertzian model, describing a granular chain, and the $α+β$ Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou model (FPUT). The most profound difference between the two systems is the discontinuous nonlinearity of the granular chain appearing whenever neighboring particles are detached. We therefore sought to unravel the role of these discontinuities in the destruction of Anderson localization and their influence on the system's chaotic dynamics. Our results show that both models exhibit an energy range where localization coexists with chaos. However, the discontinuous nonlinearity is found to be capable of triggering energy spreading of initially localized modes, at lower energies than the FPUT model. A transition from Anderson localization to chaotic dynamics and energy equipartition is found for the granular chain and is associated with the"propagation" of the discontinuous nonlinearity in the chain. On the contrary, the FPUT chain exhibits an alternate behavior between localized and delocalized chaotic behavior which is strongly dependent on the initial energy of excitation.

Duality of bounded and scattering wave systems with local symmetries

We investigate the spectral properties of a class of hard-wall bounded systems, described by potentials exhibiting domain-wise different local symmetries. Tuning the distance of the domains with locally symmetric potential from the hard wall boundaries leads to extrema of the eigenenergies. The underlying wavefunction becomes then an eigenstate of the local symmetry transform in each of the domains of local symmetry. These extrema accumulate towards eigenenergies which do not depend on the position of the potentials inside the walls. They correspond to perfect transmission resonances of the associated scattering setup, obtained by removing the hard walls. We argue that this property characterizes the duality between scattering and bounded systems in the presence of local symmetries. Our findings are illustrated at hand of a numerical example with a potential consisting of two domains of local symmetry, each one comprised of Dirac ? barriers.

Subwavelength Interferometric Control of Absorption in Three-port Acoustic Network

Utilizing the effect of losses, we show that symmetric 3-port devices exhibit coherent perfect absorption of waves and we provide the corresponding conditions on the reflection and transmission coefficients. Infinite combinations of asymmetric inputs with different amplitudes and phase at each port as well as a completely symmetric input, are found to be perfectly absorbed. To illustrate the above we study an acoustic 3-port network operating in a subwavelength frequency both theoretically and experimentally. In addition we show how the output from a 3-port network is altered, when conditions of perfect absorption are met but the input waves phase and amplitude vary. In that regard, we propose optimized structures which feature both perfect absorption and perfect transmission at the same frequency by tuning the amplitudes and phases of the input waves.

Finite size effects on topological interface states in one-dimensional scattering systems

One-dimensional topological edge modes are usually studied considering the interface between two different semi infinite periodic crystals (PCs) with inverted band structure around the Dirac point. Here we consider the case where the two PCs are finite, constituting an open scattering system, and we study the influence of the size of this finite structure on the interface mode by inspecting the complex resonances. First we show the complex resonance distribution corresponding to the band inversion around the Dirac point. Perturbations from the Dirac point display the emergence of the localized interface mode. We also report on a remarkable robustness of the interface mode as the system size varies which persists even for the smallest possible size.

Wave Propagation in a Strongly Nonlinear Locally Resonant Granular Crystal

In this work, we study the wave propagation in a recently proposed acoustic structure, the locally resonant granular crystal. This structure is composed of a one-dimensional granular crystal of hollow spherical particles in contact, containing linear resonators. The relevant model is presented and examined through a combination of analytical approximations (based on ODE and nonlinear map analysis) and of numerical results. The generic dynamics of the system involves a degradation of the well-known traveling pulse of the standard Hertzian chain of elastic beads. Nevertheless, the present system is richer, in that as the primary pulse decays, secondary ones emerge and eventually interfere with it creating modulated wavetrains. Remarkably, upon suitable choices of parameters, this interference "distills" a weakly nonlocal solitary wave (a "nanopteron"). This motivates the consideration of such nonlinear structures through a separate Fourier space technique, whose results suggest the existence of such entities not only with a single-side tail, but also with periodic tails on both ends. These tails are found to oscillate with the intrinsic oscillation frequency of the out-of-phase motion between the outer hollow bead and its internal linear attachment.

Polydispersed Granular Chains: From Long-lived Chaotic Anderson-like Localization to Energy Equipartition

We investigate the dynamics of highly polydispersed finite granular chains. From the spatio-spectral properties of small vibrations, we identify which particular single-particle displacements lead to energy localization. Then, we address a fundamental question: Do granular nonlinearities lead to chaotic dynamics and if so, does chaos destroy this energy localization? Our numerical simulations show that for moderate nonlinearities, although the overall system behaves chaotically, it can exhibit long lasting energy localization for particular single particle excitations. On the other hand, for sufficiently strong nonlinearities, connected with contact breaking, the granular chain reaches energy equipartition and an equilibrium chaotic state, independent of the initial position excitation.

Non-Hermitian Acoustic Metamaterials: the role of Exceptional Points in sound absorption

Effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians are obtained to describe coherent perfect absorbing and lasing boundary conditions. PT -symmetry of the Hamiltonians enables to design configurations which perfectly absorb at multiple frequencies. Broadened and flat perfect absorption is predicted at the exceptional point of PT -symmetry breaking while, for a particular case, absorption is enhanced with the use of gain. The aforementioned phenomena are illustrated for acoustic scattering through Helmholtz resonators revealing how tailoring the non-Hermiticity of acoustic metamaterials leads to novel mechanisms for enhanced absorption.

Transversal-rotational and zero group velocity modes in tunable magneto-granular phononic crystals

We report on the design and operation of a 1D magneto-granular phononic crystal composed of a chain of steel spherical beads on top of permanent magnets. The magnetic field of the permanent magnets induces forces in the granular structure. By changing its strength, we can tune the dynamic response of the granular structure. We present experimental results with evidence of coupled transversal-rotational modes, and zero group velocities modes. These observations are well supported by a proposed model taking into account the mechanical coupling between the beads and the magnets by linear stiffnesses and including all degrees of freedom in translations and rotations.

Tunable magneto-granular phononic crystals

This paper reports on the study of the dynamics of 1D magneto-granular phononic crystals composed of a chain of spherical steel beads inside a properly designed magnetic field. This field is induced by an array of permanent magnets, located in a holder at a given distance from the chain. The theoretical and experimental results of the band gap structure are displayed, including all six degrees of freedom for the beads, i.e. three translations and three rotations. Experimental evidence of transverse-rotational modes of propagation is pre- sented; moreover, by changing the strength of the magnetic field, the dynamic response of the granular chain is tuned. The combination of non-contact tunability with the potentially strong nonlinear behavior of gran- ular systems ensures the suitability of magneto-granular phononic crystals as nonlinear, tunable mechanical metamaterials for use in controlling elastic wave propagation.
