Thin single-crystal perovskite detector for high-energy charged particles

The organometal halide perovskites (OMHP) semi-conductors have shown recently a strong potential as radiation detectors, beside the well-known success in photovoltaics and as photo-detectors. Many studies have been published on X-rays detection, and a few studies about detection of alpha, beta-particles and protons. Less literature is present for high energy charged particles. OMHP-based devices for tracking and real-time monitoring for high energy particles may offer many advantages. OMHPs can be directly grown on pixelated electronics, even on curved substrates, without the need of complex and expensive bump-bonding procedures. Moreover, OMHPs have shown self-healing features after radiation exposure, which makes them attractive for high-flux applications. In this paper we report a device based on a thin single OMHP crystal, about 150 mum thick, directly grown on a patterned substrate through dewetting technique, able to detect high-energy charged particles in a high dynamic range of incident fluxes. A dedicated electronics circuit has been developed to match the expected time characteristics of the OMHP crystals. This is the first demonstration of thin OMHP single crystals being able to detect high energy charged particles of hundreds of MeV.

Development of nanocomposite scintillators for use in high-energy physics

Semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots) are light emitters with high quantum yield that are relatively easy to manufacture. There is therefore much interest in their possible application for the development of high-performance scintillators for use in high-energy physics. However, few previous studies have focused on the response of these materials to high-energy particles. To evaluate the potential for the use of nanocomposite scintillators in calorimetry, we are performing side-by-side tests of fine-sampling shashlyk calorimeter prototypes with both conventional and nanocomposite scintillators using electron and minimum-ionizing particle beams, allowing direct comparison of the performance obtained.

HIKE, High Intensity Kaon Experiments at the CERN SPS

A timely and long-term programme of kaon decay measurements at a new level of precision is presented, leveraging the capabilities of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). The proposed programme is firmly anchored on the experience built up studying kaon decays at the SPS over the past four decades, and includes rare processes, CP violation, dark sectors, symmetry tests and other tests of the Standard Model. The experimental programme is based on a staged approach involving experiments with charged and neutral kaon beams, as well as operation in beam-dump mode. The various phases will rely on a common infrastructure and set of detectors.

Measurement of Neutrino and Antineutrino Oscillations Using Beam and Atmospheric Data in MINOS

We report measurements of oscillation parameters from $ν_{mu}$ and $\barν_μ$ disappearance using beam and atmospheric data from MINOS. The data comprise exposures of \unit[$10.71 \times 10^{20}$]{protons on target (POT)} in the $ν_μ$-dominated beam, $\unit[3.36\times10^{20}]{POT}}$ in the $\barν_μ$-enhanced beam, and 37.88 kton-years of atmospheric neutrinos. Assuming identical $ν$ and $\barν$ oscillation parameters, we measure \mbox{$|Δm^2}| = \unit[2.41^{+0.09}_{-0.10}) \times 10^{-3}]{eV^{2}}$} and $\sin^{2}/!/left(2θ\right) = 0.950^{+0.035}_{-0.036}$. Allowing independent $ν$ and $\barν$ oscillations, we measure antineutrino parameters of $|Δ\bar{m}^2| = \unit[(2.50 ^{+0.23}_{-0.25}) \times 10^{-3}]{eV^{2}}$ and $\sin^{2}/!/left(2\barθ \right) = 0.97^{+0.03}_{-0.08}$, with minimal change to the neutrino parameters.

Electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance in the full MINOS data sample

We report on $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ appearance in $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$ beams using the full MINOS data sample. The comparison of these $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ appearance data at a 735 km baseline with $θ_{13}$ measurements by reactor experiments probes $δ$, the $θ_{23}$ octant degeneracy, and the mass hierarchy. This analysis is the first use of this technique and includes the first accelerator long-baseline search for $\barν_μ\rightarrow\barν_e$. Our data disfavor 31% (5%) of the three-parameter space defined by $δ$, the octant of the $θ_{23}$, and the mass hierarchy at the 68% (90%) C.L. We measure a value of 2sin$^2(2θ_{13})$sin$^2(θ_{23})$ that is consistent with reactor experiments.

Inclusive production of protons, anti-protons, neutrons, deuterons and tritons in p+C collisions at 158 GeV/c beam momentum

The production of protons, anti-protons, neutrons, deuterons and tritons in minimum bias p+C interactions is studied using a sample of 385 734 inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. The data cover a phase space area ranging from 0 to 1.9 GeV/c in transverse momentum and in Feynman x from -0.80 to 0.95 for protons, from -0.2 to 0.4 for anti-protons and from 0.2 to 0.95 for neutrons. Existing data in the far backward hemisphere are used to extend the coverage for protons and light nuclear fragments into the region of intranuclear cascading. The use of corresponding data sets obtained in hadron-proton collisions with the same detector allows for the detailed analysis and model-independent separation of the three principle components of hadronization in p+C interactions, namely projectile fragmentation, target fragmentation of participant nucleons and intranuclear cascading.

An improved measurement of muon antineutrino disappearance in MINOS

We report an improved measurement of muon anti-neutrino disappearance over a distance of 735km using the MINOS detectors and the Fermilab Main Injector neutrino beam in a muon anti-neutrino enhanced configuration. From a total exposure of 2.95e20 protons on target, of which 42% have not been previously analyzed, we make the most precise measurement of the anti-neutrino "atmospheric" delta-m squared = 2.62 +0.31/-0.28 (stat.) +/- 0.09 (syst.) and constrain the anti-neutrino atmospheric mixing angle >0.75 (90%CL). These values are in agreement with those measured for muon neutrinos, removing the tension reported previously.

Search for Lorentz invariance and CPT violation with muon antineutrinos in the MINOS Near Detector

We have searched for sidereal variations in the rate of antineutrino interactions in the MINOS Near Detector. Using antineutrinos produced by the NuMI beam, we find no statistically significant sidereal modulation in the rate. When this result is placed in the context of the Standard Model Extension theory we are able to place upper limits on the coefficients defining the theory. These limits are used in combination with the results from an earlier analysis of MINOS neutrino data to further constrain the coefficients.

Digital Hadron Calorimetry with Glass RPC Active Detectors

Glass RPC detectors are an attractive candidate for the active part of a highly granular digital hadron calorimeter (DHCAL) at the ILC. A numerical study, based on the GEANT3 simulation package, of the performance of such a calorimeter is presented in this work. A simplified model for the RPC response, tuned on real data, is implemented in the simulation. The reliability of the simulation is demonstrated by comparison to existing data collected with a large volume calorimeter prototype exposed to a pion beam in an energy range from 2 GeV to 10 GeV. In view of an optimization of the readout pitch, a detailed study of the energy and position resolution at the single hadron level for different read-out pad dimensions is presented. These results are then used in a parametric form to obtain a preliminary estimate of the contribution of DHCAL to the reconstruction of the energy flow at the ILC detector.
