Traveling supersolid stripe patterns in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider a traveling supersolid stripe pattern in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose gas. This configuration is associated with an unequal population of the two single-particle energy minima, giving rise to a chemical potential difference that sets the fringe velocity. Unlike stationary stripes, the moving pattern is spin-polarized, with decreasing contrast as the population imbalance increases, eventually leading to stripe melting and transition to the uniform plane-wave phase. The Bogoliubov spectrum of the moving stripes exhibits asymmetry under inversion of the excitation quasimomentum. At high population imbalance, we identify energetic and dynamical instabilities in the spin-phonon mode which transforms to the roton mode of the plane-wave phase as the stripe structure vanishes.

Superfluid transition of disordered dipolar Fermi gases in a 2D lattice

We consider a superfluid transition in two-component dipolar Fermi gases in a two-dimensional lattice with a weak on-site disorder. The momentum dependent dipole-dipole interaction amplitude violates the Anderson theorem and in the weakly interacting regime this leads to an increase of the superfluid transition temperature. We find that in a sufficiently deep lattice (tight-binding regime) and in the low momentum limit superfluid properties can be considered in the same way as in free space replacing the mass of atoms by an effective mass in the lattice. The disorder-induced increase of the critical temperature can be significantly more pronounced than in free space.

Enhanced Drude weight in a 1D system of fermions with pair hopping events

In one dimension density-density interactions of particles reduce their mobility and hence the Drude weight, which controls the divergence of the optical conductivity at zero frequency, decreases. We study effects of pair hopping events on this result in a 1D system of spinless fermions. The considered model consists of the usual single-particle hopping and pair hopping terms. In the absence of the density-density interactions, we first show that a variation of the pair hopping amplitude results in a monotonic change of the Drude weight. We next demonstrate that weak nearest-neighbor density-density interactions increase the Drude weight, whereas in the regime of strong interactions the Drude weight decreases as expected. Our numerical findings are supported by bosonization results.

Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid-Bose glass phase transition in a system of 1D disordered fermions with pair hoppings

We consider a one-dimensional system of spinless fermions with single particle and pair hoppings in a potential on-site disorder. The pair hopping term violates integrability of the model and enhances superconducting fluctuations in the bulk of the liquid. By means of the Abelian bosonization and extensive numerical DMRG calculations we provide evidence that sufficiently large pair hopping amplitude guarantees the survival of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase at weak disorder. Large disorder drives the system to the Bose glass phase, realising the Giamarchi-Schulz scenario in such a system.

Disordered impenetrable two-component fermions in one dimension

We study the one-dimensional Hubbard model for two-component fermions with infinitely strong on-site repulsion (t-0 model) in the presence of disorder. Our analytical treatment demonstrates that the type of disorder drastically changes the nature of the emerging phases. The case of spin-independent disorder can be treated as a single-particle problem with Anderson localization. On the contrary, recent numerical findings show that spin-dependent disorder, which can be realized as a random magnetic field, leads to the many-body localization-delocalization transition. We find an explicit analytic expression for the matrix elements of the random magnetic field between the eigenstates of the t-0 model with potential disorder on a finite lattice. Analysis of the matrix elements supports the existence of the many-body localization-delocalization transition in this system and provides an extended physical picture of the random magnetic field.

Superfluid transition in quasi-two-dimensional disordered dipolar Fermi gases

We investigate the effect of weak disorder on the superfluid properties of two-component quasi-two-dimensional dipolar Fermi gases. The dipole-dipole interaction amplitude is momentum dependent, which violates the Anderson theorem claiming that the weak disorder has practically no influence on the superfluid transition temperature in the weakly interacting regime. We find that for dipolar fermions the transition temperature in this regime can be strongly increased by the disorder like in the purely two-dimensional case. However, the effect becomes smaller with increasing the intercomponent fermion-fermion interaction, and in the strongly interacting regime the superfluid transition temperature in the weak disorder becomes very close to that in the absence of disorder.

Many-body localization transition in a frustrated XY chain

We demonstrate many-body localization (MBL) transition in a one-dimensional isotropic XY chain with a weak next-nearest-neighbor frustration in a random magnetic field. We perform finite-size exact diagonalization calculations of level-spacing statistics and fractal dimensions to characterize the MBL transition with increasing the random field amplitude. An equivalent representation of the model in terms of spinless fermions explains the presence of the delocalized phase by the appearance of an effective non-local interaction between the fermions. This interaction appears due to frustration provided by the next-nearest-neighbor hopping.

Rotons and their damping in elongated dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

We discuss finite temperature damping of rotons in elongated Bose-condensed dipolar gases, which are in the Thomas-Fermi regime in the tightly confined directions. The presence of many branches of excitations which can participate in the damping process, is crucial for the Landau damping and results in significant increase of the damping rate. It is found, however, that even rotons with energies close to the roton gap may remain fairly stable in systems with the roton gap as small as 1nK.

Many-body localization of 1D disordered impenetrable two-component fermions

We study effects of disorder on eigenstates of 1D two-component fermions with infinitely strong Hubbard repulsion. We demonstrate that the spin-independent (potential) disorder reduces the problem to the one-particle Anderson localization taking place at arbitrarily weak disorder. In contrast, a random magnetic field can cause reentrant many-body localization-delocalization transitions. Surprisingly weak magnetic field destroys one-particle localization caused by not too strong potential disorder, whereas at much stronger fields the states are many-body localized. We present numerical support of these conclusions.

Superfluid transition in disordered dipolar Fermi gases

We consider a weakly interacting two-component Fermi gas of dipolar particles (magnetic atoms or polar molecules) in the two-dimensional geometry. The dipole-dipole interaction (together with the short-range interaction at Feshbach resonances) for dipoles perpendicular to the plane of translational motion may provide a superfluid transition. The dipole-dipole scattering amplitude is momentum dependent, which violates the Anderson theorem claiming the independence of the transition temperature on the presence of weak disorder. We have shown that the disorder can strongly increase the critical temperature (up to 10 nK at realistic densities). This opens wide possibilities for the studies of the superfluid regime in weakly interacting Fermi gases, which was not observed so far.

Scalable quantum computing with qudits on a graph

We show a significant reduction of the number of quantum operations and the improvement of the circuit depth for the realization of the Toffoli gate by using qudits. This is done by establishing a general relation between the dimensionality of qudits and their topology of connections for a scalable multi-qudit processor, where higher qudit levels are used for substituting ancillas. The suggested model is of importance for the realization of quantum algorithms and as a method of quantum error correction codes for single-qubit operations.

Many-body localization in continuum systems: two-dimensional bosons

We demonstrate that many-body localization of two-dimensional weakly interacting bosons in disorder remains stable in the thermodynamic limit at sufficiently low temperatures. Highly energetic particles destroy the localized state only above a critical temperature, which increases with the strength of the disorder. If the particle distribution is truncated at high energies, as it does for cold atom systems, the localization can be stable at any temperature.

One-dimensional quasicrystals with power-law hopping

One-dimensional quasi-periodic systems with power-law hopping, $1/r^a$, differ from both the standard Aubry-Azbel-Harper (AAH) model and from power-law systems with uncorrelated disorder. Whereas in the AAH model all single-particle states undergo a transition from ergodic to localized at a critical quasi-disorder strength, short-range power-law hops with $a>1$ can result in mobility edges. Interestingly, there is no localization for long-range hops with $a\leq 1$, in contrast to the case of uncorrelated disorder. Systems with long-range hops are rather characterized by ergodic-to-multifractal edges and a phase transition from ergodic to multifractal (extended but non ergodic) states. We show that both mobility and ergodic-to-multifractal edges may be clearly revealed in experiments on expansion dynamics.

One-dimensional two-component fermions with contact even-wave repulsion and SU(2) breaking near-resonant odd-wave attraction

We consider a one-dimensional (1D) two-component atomic Fermi gas with contact interaction in the even-wave channel (Yang-Gaudin model) and study the effect of an SU(2) symmetry breaking near-resonant odd-wave interaction within one of the components. Starting from the microscopic Hamiltonian, we derive an effective field theory for the spin degrees of freedom using the bosonization technique. It is shown that at a critical value of the odd-wave interaction there is a first-order phase transition from a phase with zero total spin and zero magnetization to the spin-segregated phase where the magnetization locally differs from zero.

Finite temperature disordered bosons in two dimensions

We study phase transitions in a two dimensional weakly interacting Bose gas in a random potential at finite temperatures. We identify superfluid, normal fluid, and insulator phases and construct the phase diagram. At T=0 one has a tricritical point where the three phases coexist. The truncation of the energy distribution at the trap barrier, which is a generic phenomenon in cold atom systems, limits the growth of the localization length and in contrast to the thermodynamic limit the insulator phase is present at any temperature.

Superfluidity of identical fermions in an optical lattice: atoms and polar molecules

In this work, we discuss the emergence of $p$-wave superfluids of identical fermions in 2D lattices. The optical lattice potential manifests itself in an interplay between an increase in the density of states on the Fermi surface and the modification of the fermion-fermion interaction (scattering) amplitude. The density of states is enhanced due to an increase of the effective mass of atoms. In deep lattices, for short-range interacting atoms, the scattering amplitude is strongly reduced compared to free space due to a small overlap of wavefunctions of fermions sitting in the neighboring lattice sites, which suppresses the $p$-wave superfluidity. However, we show that for a moderate lattice depth there is still a possibility to create atomic $p$-wave superfluids with sizable transition temperatures. The situation is drastically different for fermionic polar molecules. Being dressed with a microwave field, they acquire a dipole-dipole attractive tail in the interaction potential. Then, due to a long-range character of the dipole-dipole interaction, the effect of the suppression of the scattering amplitude in 2D lattices is absent. This leads to the emergence of a stable topological $p_x+ip_y$ superfluid of identical microwave-dressed polar molecules.

Duality in power-law localization in disordered one-dimensional systems

The transport of excitations between pinned particles in many physical systems may be mapped to single-particle models with power-law hopping, $1/r^a$. For randomly spaced particles, these models present an effective peculiar disorder that leads to surprising localization properties. We show that in one-dimensional systems almost all eigenstates (except for a few states close to the ground state) are power-law localized for any value of $a>0$. Moreover, we show that our model is an example of a new universality class of models with power-law hopping, characterized by a duality between systems with long-range hops ($a<1$) and short-range hops ($a>1$) in which the wave function amplitude falls off algebraically with the same power $γ$ from the localization center.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in bilayer dipolar systems

We study the phase diagram of fermionic polar molecules in a bilayer system, with an imbalance of molecular densities of the layers. For the imbalance exceeding a critical value the system undergoes a transition from the uniform interlayer superfluid to the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state with a stripe structure, and at sufficiently large imbalance a transition from the FFLO to normal phase. Compared to the case of contact interactions, the FFLO regime is enhanced by the long-range character of the interlayer dipolar interaction, which can combine the s-wave and p-wave pairing in the order parameter.
