Alternative paths to realize Majorana Fermions in Superconductor-Ferromagnet Heterostructures

A fundamental obstacle for achieving quantum computation is local decoherence. One way to circumvent this problem rests on the concepts of topological quantum computation using non-local information storage, for example on pairs of Majorana fermions (MFs). The arguably most promising way to generate MFs relies at present on spin-triplet p-wave states of superconductors (SC), which are not abundant in nature, unfortunately. Thus, proposals for their engineering in devices, usually via proximity effect from a conventional SC into materials with strong spinorbit coupling (SOC), are intensively investigated nowadays. Here we take an alternative path, exploiting the different connections between fields based on a quartet coupling rule for fields introduced by one of us, we demonstrate that, for instance, coexisting Zeeman field with a charge current would provide the conditions to induce p-wave pairing in the presence of singlet superconductivity. This opens new avenues for the engineering of robust MFs in various, not necessarily (quasi-)one-dimensional, superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructures, including such motivated by recent pioneering experiments that report MFs, in particular, without the need of any exotic materials with special structures of intrinsic SOC.

Magnetic-field-induced chiral hidden order in URu2Si2

Two of the most striking and yet unresolved manifestations of the hidden order (HO) in URu2Si2, are associated on one hand with the double-step metamagnetic transitions and on the other with the giant anomalous Nernst signal. Both are observed when a magnetic field is applied along the c-axis. Here we provide for the first time a unified understanding of these puzzling phenomena and the related field-temperature (B-T) phase diagram. We demonstrate that the HO phase at finite fields can be explained with a chiral dxy+idx2-y2 spin density wave, assuming that the zero field HO contains only the time-reversal symmetry preserving idx2-y2 component. We argue that the presence of the field-induced chiral HO can be reflected in a distinctive non-linear B-dependence of the Kerr angle, when a Kerr experiment is conducted for finite fields. This fingerprint can be conclusive for the possible emergence of chirality in the HO.

Small-q phonon mediated singlet and chiral spin triplet superconductivity in LiFeAs

We report fully momentum dependent, self-consistent calculations of the gap symmetry, Fermi surface (FS) anisotropy and Tc of superconducting (SC) LiFeAs using the experimental band structure and a realistic small-q electron phonon interaction within the framework of Migdal-Eliashberg theory. In the stoichiometric regime, we find the exact s++ gap as reported by ARPES. For slight deviations from stoichiometry towards electron doping, we find that a chiral triplet p_x+ip_y state stabilizes near Tc and that at lower temperatures a transition from the triplet to singlet s+- SC takes place. Further doping stabilizes the chiral p-wave SC down to T=0. Precisely the same behavior was observed recently by NMR. Our results provide a natural and universal understanding of the conflicting experimental observations in LiFeAs.

Nematicity from mixed S_{+-} + d_{x^2-y^2} states in iron-based superconductors

We demonstrate that in iron-based superconductors, the extended S_{+-} SC state coexists with the d_{x^2-y^2} state under generic conditions. The mixed S_{+-} + d_{x^2-y^2} SC is a natural nematic state in which the tetragonal symmetry C_4 is broken to C_2 explaining puzzling findings of nematic SC in FeSe films [Science 332, 1410 (2011)]. Moreover, we report the possibility of a first order transition at low-T from the nematic S_{+-} + d_{x^2-y^2} state to the pure d_{x^2-y^2} state induced by the Zeeman magnetic field proposing an original experimental strategy for identifying our mixed nematic state in FeSe films. Extrapolating our findings, we argue that nematicity in non superconducting states of underdoped and undoped pnictides may reflect mixed S_{+-} + d_{x^2-y^2} Density Wave states.

Small-q Phonon Mediated Unconventional Superconductivity in the Iron Pnictides

We report self-consistent calculations of the gap symmetry for the iron-based high-temperature superconductors using realistic small-q phonon mediated pairing potentials and four-band energy dispersions. When both electron and hole Fermi surface pockets are present, we obtain the nodeless $s_\pm$ state that was first encountered in a spin-fluctuations mechanism picture. Nodal gap structures such as $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $s_\pm+d_{x^2-y^2}$ and even a p-wave triplet state, are accessible upon doping within our phononic mechanism. Our results resolve the conflict between phase sensitive experiments reporting a gap changing sign attributed previously only to a non-phononic mechanism and isotope effect measurements proving the involvement of phonons in the pairing.

Meissner effect without superconductivity from a chiral d-density wave

We demonstrate that the formation of a chiral d-density wave (CDDW) state generates a Topological Meissner effect (TME) in the absence of any kind of superconductivity. The TME is identical to the usual superconducting Meissner effect but it appears only for magnetic fields perpendicular to the plane while it is absent for in plane fields. The observed enhanced diamagnetic signals in the non-superconducting pseudogap regime of the cuprates may find an alternative interpretation in terms of a TME, originating from a chiral d-density wave pseudogap.

Magnetic field induced pattern of coexisting condensates in the superconducting state of CeCoIn$_5$

In usual superconductors the carriers form Cooper pairs that have zero total momentum meaning that the superfluid density is homogeneous. We know for decades that it is a priori possible to observe at high fields the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinikov (FFLO) state in which the superfluid density exhibits a field dependent modulation. The search for such inhomogeneous condensates in materials is the subject of tremendous excitement especially after the discovery of a promising high-field superconducting (HFSC) phase in CeCoIn$_5$. However, subsequent neutron and NMR experiments contradicted the FFLO picture in CeCoIn$_5$ establishing a puzzling coupling of the distinct HFSC state with a magnetic modulation. Here we show that, a novel type of exotic state is observed at high fields in CeCoIn$_5$ in which a pattern of coexisting condensates manifests. The specific pattern includes the d-wave singlet SC state, the staggered $π$-triplet SC state and Spin Density Waves (SDW). Because of particle-hole asymmetry these three condensates may either appear separately or all three together providing a new perspective on antiferromagnetic superconductors that may include high-$T_c$ cuprates and pniktides. The field induced transition to the pattern state in CeCoIn$_5$ is only a paradigm of a generic mechanism that prevents the elimination of the dominating condensate by the field via the formation of a pattern of condensates. This opens new avenues for the search of exotic states not only in electronic systems, but also in other systems where inhomogeneous condensates are actively discussed like trapped atomic fermi gases and dense quark matter.

Patterns of coexisting superconducting and particle-hole condensates

We have studied systematically the influence of particle-hole symmetric and asymmetric kinetic terms on the ordered phases that we may observe competing or coexisting in a tetragonal system. We show that there are precise patterns of triplets of ordered phases that are accessible (i.e. it is impossible to observe two of them without the third one). We found a systematic way to predict these patterns of states and tested it by identifying at least 16 different patterns of three order parameters that necessarily coexist in the presence of the kinetic terms. We show that there are two types of general equations governing the competition of all these triplets of order parameters and we provide them.

Spontaneous Quantum Hall Effect in chiral d-density waves

We study the electromagnetic response of a chiral ${\rm d_{xy}+id_{x^2-y^2}}$ charge density wave state. Due to parity (${\cal P}$) and time reversal (${\cal T}$) violation, Chern-Simons terms emerge in the effective action of the U(1) gauge field. As a consequence electric and magnetic fields are coupled providing the possibility of observing the Spontaneous Quantum Hall Effect i.e. generation of Hall voltage via the sole application of an electric field. We show how the Chern-Simons terms are induced and discuss the topological origin of the quantization of Hall conductance.

Coexistence of SDW, d-wave singlet and staggered $π$-triplet superconductivity

We have studied the competition and coexistence of staggered triplet SC with d-wave singlet SC and SDW in the mean-field approximation. Detailed numerical studies demonstrate that particle-hole asymmetry mixes these states and therefore they are simultaneously present. Even more interesting were the results of our study of the influence of a uniform magnetic field. We observe novel transitions that show the characteristics of Fulde-Ferrel phases, yet they concern transitions to different combinations of the above orders. For example, above a given field, in a particle-hole symmetric system we observe a transition from d-wave singlet SC to a state in which d-wave singlet SC coexists with staggered triplet SC and SDW. We believe our results may provide, among others, a direct explanation to recent puzzles about the Fulde Ferrel like states that are apparently observed in CeCoIn5.

New Magnetic-Field-Induced Macroscopic Quantum Phenomenon in High-$T_c$ Cuprates: Confined Field-Induced Density Waves in the Superconducting State

We reveal a novel macroscopic quantum phenomenon induced by a magnetic field. It corresponds to the {\it non-integer quantization of the superfluid density} in a superconductor with gap nodes due to the generation of confined field-induced density waves (CFIDW) over a portion of the Fermi surface (FS). The Landau numbers $L$ are not sufficient to index these macroscopic quantum states and new quanrum numbers $ζ$ must be added. Distinct qualitative implications of this $|L,ζ>$ quantization are evident in a number of puzzling experiments in high-$T_c$ cuprates including the plateaus behavior in the field profile of thermal conductivity, field induced magnetic moments, charge textures around the vortices, and field induced vortex-solid to cascade vortex glass transitions.

Competition of Orbital Antiferromagnetism With Q-Triplet-Pairing in the Ferromagnetic Superconductor UGe$_2$

Within a multicomponent BCS-like framework we study the coexistence and competition of various CDW and SC order parameters in the presence of a strong ferromagnetic background. We find that the competition of unconventional CDW, also called orbital antiferromagnet, with SC at finite momentum (${\bf Q}$-triplet pairing) shows unique characteristics like an extreme sensitivity on the deviations from nesting. We argue that pressure in UGe$_2$ creates deviations from the nesting and report a phase diagram in qualitative agreement with the observed behavior of UGe$_2$.

Efficient Selfconsistent Calculations of Multiband Superconductivity in UPd$_2$Al$_3$

An efficient physically motivated computational approach to multiband superconductivity is introduced and applied to the study of the gap symmetry in a heavy-fermion, UPd$_2$Al$_3$. Using realistic pairing potentials and accurate energy bands that are computed within density functional theory, self-consistent calculations demonstrate that the only accessible superconducting gap with nodes exhibits d-wave symmetry in the $A_{1g}$ representation of the $D_{6h}$ point group. Our results suggest that in a superconductor with gap nodes the prevailing gap symmetry is dictated by the constraint that nodes must be as far as possible from high-density areas.

Unconventional Superconductivity in UPd_2Al_3 from Realistic Selfconsistent Calculations

Realistic selfconsistent calculations of unconventional superconductivity in a heavy-fermion material are reported. Our calculations for UPd$_2$Al$_3$ start from accurate energy band dispersions that are computed within the local spin-density functional theory and provide Fermi surfaces in agreement with experiment. Using physically motivated, realistic pairing potentials it is shown that the superconducting gap has two lines of nodes around the z-axis, thus exhibiting d-wave symmetry in the $A_{1g}$ representation of the $D_{6h}$ point group. Our results suggest that in a superconductor with gap nodes, the prevailing gap symmetry is dictated by the constraint that nodes must be as far as possible from high-density areas.

Localization corrections and small-q phonon-mediated unconventional superconductivity in the cuprates

Taking into account the first localization corrections in the electron-impurity self-energy we study the effect of non-magnetic impurities on unconventional superconductivity (SC) mediated by small-q electron-phonon scattering. We show that when van Hove singularities are close to the Fermi level making the electronic system anisotropic as in the high-$T_c$ oxides, both the d-wave and s-wave states are sensitive to non-magnetic impurities and beyond a critical impurity concentration SC disappears in {\it both gap symmetry channels}. Impurity doping may induce a first order transition from d-wave to s-wave SC, but no saturation of the impuruty effect is reported due to the intrinsically anisotropic character of the localization corrections in this context.

Small-q phonon-mediated superconductivity in organic κ-BEDT-TTF compounds

We propose a mew picture for superconductivity in $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2X$ salts arguing that small-{\bf q} electron-phonon scattering dominates the pairing. We reproduce the distinct X-shaped d-wave gap reported recently by magnetooptic measurements and we argue that the softness of the momentum structure of the gap and the near degeneracy of s- and d-wave gap states may be at the origin of the experimental controversy about the gap symmetry. We show that a magnetic field applied parallel to the planes may induce extended gapless-regions on the FS accounting for the experimental signatures of a Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinikov state and it may induce gap symmetry transitions as well.

Strong-coupling superconductivity due to soft boson modes in MgB_2, cuprates, borocarbides and some heavy fermions

We report micro-Raman measurements that reveal a low-energy soft mode at 16-19 meV in MgB_2 which becomes sharper in the superconducting state. With a boson spectrum based on this mode we reproduce, within Eliashberg theory, the T_c, the T-shape of the NMR relaxation rate as well as unusual dip-hump features in available tunneling data. We compare MgB_2 to cuprates, borocarbides and UPd_2Al_3, where we identify soft bosonic modes at energies which scale with their T_c suggesting that all these materials are very strong coupling superconductors to soft bosonic modes, that are possibly precursors of quantum instabilities.

Small-q electron-phonon scattering and linear dc resistivity in high-T_c oxides

We examine the effect on the DC resistivity of small-q electron-phonon scattering, in a system with the electronic topology of the high-T_c oxides. Despite the fact that the scattering is dominantly forward, its contribution to the transport can be significant due to ``ondulations'' of the bands in the flat region and to the umpklapp process. When the extended van-Hove singularities are sufficiently close to $E_F$ the acoustic branch of the phonons contribute significantly to the transport. In that case one can obtain linear $T$ dependent resistivity down to temperatures as low as 10 K, even if electrons are scattered also by optical phonons of about 500 K as reported by Raman measurements.
