Reconstruction of Scalar Potentials in Modified Gravity Models

We employ the superpotential technique for the reconstruction of cosmological models with a non-minimally coupled scalar field evolving on a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. The key point in this method is that the Hubble parameter is considered as a function of the scalar field and this allows one to reconstruct the scalar field potential and determine the dynamics of the field itself, without a priori fixing the Hubble parameter as a function of time or of the scale factor. The scalar field potentials that lead to de Sitter or asymptotic de Sitter solutions, and those that reproduce the cosmological evolution given by Einstein-Hilbert action plus a barotropic perfect fluid, have been obtained.

Quantum Back-Reaction in Scale Invariant Induced Gravity Inflation

A quartic, self-interacting potential in the induced gravity framework is known to have a pure de Sitter attractor for the homogeneous mode. In order to obtain non-zero slow roll parameters we therefore study the quantum back-reaction of the scalar and the tensor perturbations on such a homogeneous dynamics. The results are then compared with inflationary observables in order to constrain the parameters of the model.

Backreaction during inflation: a physical gauge invariant formulation

Within a genuinely gauge invariant approach recently developed for the computation of the cosmological backreaction, we study, in a cosmological inflationary context and with respect to various observers, the impact of scalar fluctuations on the space-time dynamics in the long wavelength limit. We stress that such a quantum backreaction effect is evaluated in a truly gauge independent way using a set of effective equations which describe the dynamics of the averaged geometry. In particular we show under what conditions the free falling (geodetic) observers do not experience any scalar-induced backreaction in the effective Hubble rate and fluid equation of state.

Stochastic growth of quantum fluctuations during inflation

The standard field-theoretical approach to the slow-roll inflation is introduced. We then show as, in order to calculate the mean square of the canonical gauge invariant quantum fluctuations associated to a generic field, the logarithm of the scale factor has to be used as the time variable in the Fokker-Planck equation in the stochastic approach. Then we compute the growth of different test fields with a small effective mass during slow-roll inflationary models, comparing the results with the one for the gauge invariant canonical fluctuation associated to the inflaton, the Mukhanov variable. We find that in most of the single fields inflationary models such fluctuation grows faster than any test field with a non-negative effective mass, with the exception of hybrid models.

Stochastic growth of quantum fluctuations during slow-roll inflation

We compute the growth of the mean square of quantum fluctuations of test fields with small effective mass during a slowly changing, nearly de Sitter stage which took place in different inflationary models. We consider a minimally coupled scalar with a small mass, a modulus with an effective mass $ \propto H^2$ (with $H$ as the Hubble parameter) and a massless non-minimally coupled scalar in the test field approximation and compare the growth of their relative mean square with the one of gauge-invariant inflaton fluctuations. We find that in most of the single field inflationary models the mean square gauge invariant inflaton fluctuation grows {\em faster} than any test field with a non-negative effective mass. Hybrid inflationary models can be an exception: the mean square of a test field can dominate over the gauge invariant inflaton fluctuation one on suitably choosing parameters. We also compute the stochastic growth of quantum fluctuation of a second field, relaxing the assumption of its zero homogeneous value, in a generic inflationary model; as a main result, we obtain that the equation of motion of a gauge invariant variable associated, order by order, with a generic quantum scalar fluctuation during inflation can be obtained only if we use the number of e-folds as the time variable in the corresponding Langevin and Fokker-Planck equations for the stochastic approach. We employ this approach to derive some bounds in the case of a model with two massive fields.

Inflation and Reheating in Spontaneously Generated Gravity

Inflation is studied in the context of induced gravity (IG) $γσ^2 R$, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar, $σ$ a scalar field and $γ$ a dimensionless constant, and diverse symmetry-breaking potentials $V(σ)$ are considered. In particular we compared the predictions for Landau-Ginzburg (LG) and Coleman-Weinberg (CW) type potentials and their possible generalizations with the most recent data. We find that large field inflation generally leads to fewer constraints on the parameters and the shape of the potential whereas small field inflation is more problematic and, if viable, implies more constraints, in particular on the parameter $γ$. We also examined the reheating phase and obtained an accurate analytical solution for the dynamics of inflaton and the Hubble parameter by using a multiple scale analysis (MSA). The solutions were then used to study the average expansion of the Universe, the average equation of state for the scalar field and both the perturbative and resonant decays of the inflaton field.

Inflation and Reheating in Induced Gravity

Inflation is studied in the context of induced gravity (IG) $γσ^2 R$, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar, $σ$ a scalar field and $γ$ a dimensionless constant. We study in detail cosmological perturbations in IG and examine both a Landau-Ginzburg (LG) and a Coleman-Weinberg (CW) potential toy models for small field and large field (chaotic) inflation and find that small field inflationary models in IG are constrained to $γ\lesssim 3 \times 10^{-3}$ by WMAP 5 yrs data. Finally we describe the regime of coherent oscillations in induced gravity by an analytic approximation, showing how the homogeneous inflaton can decay in its short-scale fluctuations when it oscillates around a non-zero value $σ_0$.

Generation of fluctuations during inflation: comparison of stochastic and field-theoretic approaches

We prove that the stochastic and standard field-theoretical approaches produce exactly the same results for the amount of light massive scalar field fluctuations generated during inflation in the leading order of the slow-roll approximation. This is true both in the case for which this field is a test one and inflation is driven by another field, and the case for which the field plays the role of inflaton itself. In the latter case, in order to calculate the average of the mean square of the gauge-invariant inflaton fluctuation, the logarithm of the scale factor $a$ has to be used as the time variable in the Fokker-Planck equation in the stochastic approach. The implications of particle production during inflation for the second stage of inflation and for the moduli problem are also discussed. The case of a massless self-interacting test scalar field in a de Sitter background with a zero initial renormalized mean square is also considered in order to show how the stochastic approach can easily produce results corresponding to diagrams with an arbitrary number of scalar field loops in the field-theoretical approach (explicit results up to 4 loops inclusive are presented).

Vacuum Energy and Standard Model Physics

The conditions for the cancellation of one loop contributions to vacuum energy (both U.V. divergent and finite) coming from the Standard Model (SM) fields are examined. It is proven that this is not possible unless one introduces besides several bosons, at least one massive fermion having mass within specific ranges. On examining one of the simplest SM extensions satisfying the constraints one finds that the mass range of the lightest massive boson is compatible with the present Higgs mass bounds. We do not consider effects associated with condensates or renormalization group running.

Cosmological Unparticle Correlators

We introduce and study an extension of the correlator of unparticle matter operators in a cosmological environment. Starting from FRW spaces we specialize to a de Sitter spacetime and derive its inflationary power spectrum which we find to be almost flat. We finally investigate some consequences of requiring the existence of a unitary boundary conformal field theory in the framework of the dS/CFT correspondence.

Dark Energy, Induced Gravity and Broken Scale Invariance

We study the cosmological evolution of an induced gravity model with a self-interacting scalar field $σ$ and in the presence of matter and radiation. Such model leads to Einstein Gravity plus a cosmological constant as a stable attractor among homogeneous cosmologies and is therefore a viable dark-energy (DE) model for a wide range of scalar field initial conditions and values for its positive $γ$ coupling to the Ricci curvature $γσ^{2}R$.

The Impact of Ultraviolet Regularization on the Spectrum of Curvature Perturbations During Inflation

Inflationary predictions based on the linear theory of cosmological perturbations are related to the two point function of a (second quantized) real scalar free field during the accelerated stage. Such a two point function is finite, in contrast with its coincidence limit, which is divergent due to the ultraviolet divergences proper of field theory. We therefore argue that predictions of most of the inflationary models do not necessarily need a regularization scheme to leading order, i.e. tree level, which is required instead for non-linear corrections or calculations involving the energy-momentum tensor. We also discuss unpleasant features of the "would be" regularized spectrum obtained using the traditional fourth order adiabatic subtraction.

Vacuum energy and spectral function sum rules

We reformulate the problem of the cancellation of the ultraviolet divergencies of the vacuum energy, particularly important at the cosmological level, in terms of a saturation of spectral function sum rules which leads to a set of conditions on the spectrum of the fundamental theory. We specialize the approach to both Minkowski and de Sitter space-times and investigate some examples.

Broken Scale Invariance and Quintessence (a quarter of a century ago)

The cosmological consequences of a simple scalar field model for the generation of Newton's constant through the spontaneous breaking of scale invariance in a curved space-time are again presented and discussed. Such a model leads to a consistent description wherein the introduction of matter introduces a small perturbation on a de Sitter universe and a time dependence of the gravitational coupling.

Second Order Gauge-Invariant Perturbations during Inflation

The evolution of gauge invariant second-order scalar perturbations in a general single field inflationary scenario are presented. Different second order gauge invariant expressions for the curvature are considered. We evaluate perturbatively one of these second order curvature fluctuations and a second order gauge invariant scalar field fluctuation during the slow-roll stage of a massive chaotic inflationary scenario, taking into account the deviation from a pure de Sitter evolution and considering only the contribution of super-Hubble perturbations in mode-mode coupling. The spectra resulting from their contribution to the second order quantum correlation function are nearly scale-invariant, with additional logarithmic corrections to the first order spectrum. For all scales of interest the amplitude of these spectra depend on the total number of e-folds. We find, on comparing first and second order perturbation results, an upper limit to the total number of e-folds beyond which the two orders are comparable.

Method of comparison equations for cosmological perturbations

We apply the method of comparison equations to study cosmological perturbations during inflation, obtaining the full power spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations to first and to second order in the slow-roll parameters. We compare our results with those derived by means of other methods, in particular the Green's function method and the improved WKB approximation, and find agreement for the slow-roll structure. The method of comparison equations, just as the improved WKB approximation, can however be applied to more general situations where the slow-roll approximation fails.

Improved WKB analysis of Slow-Roll Inflation

We extend the WKB method for the computation of cosmological perturbations during inflation beyond leading order and provide the power spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations to second order in the slow-roll parameters. Our method does not require that the slow-roll parameters be constant. Although leading and next-to-leading results in the slow-roll parameters depend on the approximation technique used in the computation, we find that the inflationary theoretical predictions obtained may reach the accuracy required by planned observations. In two technical appendices, we compare our techniques and results with previous findings.

Higher Order Slow-Roll Predictions for Inflation

We study the WKB approximation beyond leading order for cosmological perturbations during inflation. To first order in the slow-roll parameters, we show that an improved WKB approximation leads to analytical results agreeing to within 0.1% with the standard slow-roll results. Moreover, the leading WKB approximation to second order in the slow-roll parameters leads to analytical predictions in qualitative agreement with those obtained by the Green's function method.
