Measurements of Dielectron Production in Au$+$Au Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV from the STAR Experiment

We report on measurements of dielectron ($e^+e^-$) production in Au$+$Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV per nucleon-nucleon pair using the STAR detector at RHIC. Systematic measurements of the dielectron yield as a function of transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) and collision centrality show an enhancement compared to a cocktail simulation of hadronic sources in the low invariant-mass region ($M_{ee}<$ 1 GeV/$c^2$). This enhancement cannot be reproduced by the $ρ$-meson vacuum spectral function. In minimum-bias collisions, in the invariant-mass range of 0.30 $-$ 0.76 GeV/$c^2$, integrated over the full $p_{\rm T}$ acceptance, the enhancement factor is 1.76 $\pm$ 0.06 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.26 (sys.) $\pm$ 0.29 (cocktail). The enhancement factor exhibits weak centrality and $p_{\rm T}$ dependence in STAR's accessible kinematic regions, while the excess yield in this invariant-mass region as a function of the number of participating nucleons follows a power-law shape with a power of 1.44 $\pm$ 0.10. Models that assume an in-medium broadening of the $ρ$ meson spectral function consistently describe the observed excess in these measurements. Additionally, we report on measurements of $ω$ and $ϕ$-meson production through their $e^+e^-$ decay channel. These measurements show good agreement with Tsallis Blast-Wave model predictions as well as, in the case of the $ϕ$-meson, results through its $K^+K^-$ decay channel. In the intermediate invariant-mass region (1.1$<M_{ee}<$ 3 GeV/$c^2$), we investigate the spectral shapes from different collision centralities. Physics implications for possible in-medium modification of charmed hadron production and other physics sources are discussed.

Observation of Transverse Spin-Dependent Azimuthal Correlations of Charged Pion Pairs in $p^\uparrow+p$ at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV

We report the observation of transverse polarization-dependent azimuthal correlations in charged pion pair production with the STAR experiment in $p^\uparrow+p$ collisions at RHIC. These correlations directly probe quark transversity distributions. We measure signals in excess of five standard deviations at high transverse momenta, at high pseudorapidities eta>0.5, and for pair masses around the mass of the rho-meson. This is the first direct transversity measurement in p+p collisions. Comparing the results to data from lepton-nucleon scattering will test the universality of these spin-dependent quantities.

Effect of event selection on jetlike correlation measurement in $d$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}=200$ GeV

Dihadron correlations are analyzed in $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 200$ GeV $d$+Au collisions classified by forward charged particle multiplicity and zero-degree neutral energy in the Au-beam direction. It is found that the jetlike correlated yield increases with the event multiplicity. After taking into account this dependence, the non-jet contribution on the away side is minimal, leaving little room for a back-to-back ridge in these collisions.

Long-range pseudorapidity dihadron correlations in $d$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV

Dihadron angular correlations in $d$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV are reported as a function of the measured zero-degree calorimeter neutral energy and the forward charged hadron multiplicity in the Au-beam direction. A finite correlated yield is observed at large relative pseudorapidity ($Δη$) on the near side (i.e. relative azimuth $Δϕ\sim0$). This correlated yield as a function of $Δη$ appears to scale with the dominant, primarily jet-related, away-side ($Δϕ\simπ$) yield. The Fourier coefficients of the $Δϕ$ correlation, $V_{n}=\langle\cos nΔϕ\rangle$, have a strong $Δη$ dependence. In addition, it is found that $V_{1}$ is approximately inversely proportional to the mid-rapidity event multiplicity, while $V_{2}$ is independent of it with similar magnitude in the forward ($d$-going) and backward (Au-going) directions.

The STAR Vertex Position Detector

The 2x3 channel pseudo Vertex Position Detector (pVPD) in the STAR experiment at RHIC has been upgraded to a 2x19 channel detector in the same acceptance, called the Vertex Position Detector (VPD). This detector is fully integrated into the STAR trigger system and provides the primary input to the minimum-bias trigger in Au+Au collisions. The information from the detector is used both in the STAR Level-0 trigger and offline to measure the location of the primary collision vertex along the beam pipe and the event "start time" needed by other fast-timing detectors in STAR. The offline timing resolution of single detector channels in full-energy Au+Au collisions is ~100 ps, resulting in a start time resolution of a few tens of picoseconds and a resolution on the primary vertex location of ~1 cm.

Calibration and performance of the STAR Muon Telescope Detector using cosmic rays

We report the timing and spatial resolution from the Muon Telescope Detector (MTD) installed in the STAR experiment at RHIC. Cosmic ray muons traversing the STAR detector have an average transverse momentum of 6 GeV/c. Due to their very small multiple scattering, these cosmic muons provide an ideal tool to calibrate the detectors and measure their timing and spatial resolution. The values obtained were ~100 ps and ~1-2 cm, respectively. These values are comparable to those obtained from cosmic-ray bench tests and test beams.

Neutrinoless double beta decay and direct searches for neutrino mass

Study of the neutrinoless double beta decay and searches for the manifestation of the neutrino mass in ordinary beta decay are the main sources of information about the absolute neutrino mass scale, and the only practical source of information about the charge conjugation properties of the neutrinos. Thus, these studies have a unique role in the plans for better understanding of the whole fast expanding field of neutrino physics.

A straw drift chamber spectrometer for studies of rare kaon decays

We describe the design, construction, readout, tests, and performance of planar drift chambers, based on 5 mm diameter copperized Mylar and Kapton straws, used in an experimental search for rare kaon decays. The experiment took place in the high-intensity neutral beam at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of Brookhaven National Laboratory, using a neutral beam stop, two analyzing dipoles, and redundant particle identification to remove backgrounds.

Energy loss of fast quarks in nuclei

We report an analysis of the nuclear dependence of the yield of Drell-Yan dimuons from the 800 GeV/c proton bombardment of $^2H$, C, Ca, Fe, and W targets. Employing a new formulation of the Drell-Yan process in the rest frame of the nucleus, this analysis examines the effect of initial-state energy loss and shadowing on the nuclear-dependence ratios versus the incident proton's momentum fraction and dimuon effective mass. The resulting energy loss per unit path length is $-dE/dz = 2.32 \pm 0.52\pm 0.5$ GeV/fm. This is the first observation of a nonzero energy loss of partons traveling in nuclear environment.

Can Doubly Strange Dibaryon Resonances be Discovered at RHIC?

The baryon-baryon continuum invariant mass spectrum generated from relativistic nucleus + nucleus collision data may reveal the existence of doubly-strange dibaryons not stable against strong decay if they lie within a few MeV of threshold. Furthermore, since the dominant component of these states is a superposition of two color-octet clusters which can be produced intermediately in a color-deconfined quark-gluon plasma (QGP), an enhanced production of dibaryon resonances could be a signal of QGP formation. A total of eight, doubly-strange dibaryon states are considered for experimental search using the STAR detector (Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC) at the new Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). These states may decay to Lambda-Lambda and/or proton-Cascade-minus, depending on the resonance energy. STAR's large acceptance, precision tracking and vertex reconstruction capabilities, and large data volume capacity, make it an ideal instrument to use for such a search. Detector performance and analysis sensitivity are studied as a function of resonance production rate and width for one particular dibaryon which can directly strong decay to proton-Cascade-minus but not Lambda-Lambda. Results indicate that such resonances may be discovered using STAR if the resonance production rates are comparable to coalescence model predictions for dibaryon bound states.

First Observation of the Rare Decay Mode K-long -> e+ e-

In an experiment designed to search for and study very rare two-body decay modes of the K-long, we have observed four examples of the decay K-long -> e+ e-, where the expected background is 0.17+-0.10 events. This observation translates into a branching fraction of 8.7^{+5.7}_{-4.1} X 10^{-12}, consistent with recent theoretical predictions. This result represents by far the smallest branching fraction yet measured in particle physics.

A Compact Beam Stop for a Rare Kaon Decay Experiment

We describe the development and testing of a novel beam stop for use in a rare kaon decay experiment at the Brookhaven AGS. The beam stop is located inside a dipole spectrometer magnet in close proximity to straw drift chambers and intercepts a high-intensity neutral hadron beam. The design process, involving both Monte Carlo simulations and beam tests of alternative beam-stop shielding arrangements, had the goal of minimizing the leakage of particles from the beam stop and the resulting hit rates in detectors, while preserving maximum acceptance for events of interest. The beam tests consisted of measurements of rates in drift chambers, scintilation counter hodoscopes, a gas threshold Cherenkov counter, and a lead glass array. Measurements were also made with a set of specialized detectors which were sensitive to low-energy neutrons, photons, and charged particles. Comparisons are made between these measurements and a detailed Monte Carlo simulation.

Theoretical and Experimental K^+ + Nucleus Total and Reaction Cross Sections from the KDP-RIA Model

The 5-dimensional spin-0 form of the Kemmer-Duffin-Petiau (KDP) equation is used to calculate scattering observables [elastic differential cross sections ($dσ/dΩ$), total cross sections ($σ_{Tot}$), and reaction cross sections ($σ_{Reac}$})] and to deduce $σ_{Tot}$ and $σ_{Reac}$ from transmission data for $K^+ + $ $^{6}$Li, $^{12}$C, $^{28}$Si, and $^{40}$Ca at several momenta in the range $488 - 714 MeV/c$. Realistic uncertainties are generated for the theoretical predictions. These errors, mainly due to uncertainties associated with the elementary $K^+ +$ nucleon amplitudes, are large, so that the disagreement that has been noted between experimental and theoretical $σ_{Tot}$ and $σ_{Reac}$ is not surprising. The results suggest that the $K^+ +$ nucleon amplitudes need to be much better determined before unconventional medium effects are invoked to explain the data.

Can only flavor-nonsinglet H dibaryons be stable against strong decays?

Using the QCD sum rule approach, we show that the flavor-nonsinglet $H$ dibaryon states with J$^π = 1^+$, J$^π = 0^+$, I=1 (27plet) are nearly degenerate with the J$^π = 0^+$, I=0 singlet $H_0$ dibaryon, which has been predicted to be stable against strong decay, but has not been observed. Our calculation, which does not require an instanton correction, suggests that the $H_0$ is slightly heavier than these flavor-nonsinglet $H$s over a wide range of the parameter space. If the singlet $H_0$ mass lies above the $ΛΛ$ threshold (2231~MeV), then the strong interaction breakup to $ΛΛ$ would produce a very broad resonance in the $ΛΛ$ invariant mass spectrum which would be very difficult to observe. On the other hand, if these flavor-nonsinglet J=0 and 1 $H$ dibaryons are also above the $ΛΛ$ threshold, but below the $Ξ^0n$ breakup threshold (2254 MeV), then because the direct, strong interaction decay to the $ΛΛ$ channel is forbidden, these flavor-nonsinglet states might be more amenable to experimental observation. The present results allow a possible reconciliation between the reported observation of $ΛΛ$ hypernuclei, which argue against a stable $H_0$, and the possible existence of $H$ dibaryons in general.
