Coexistence of magnetic fluctuations and superconductivity in the pnictide high temperature superconductor SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ measured by muon spin rotation

Muon-spin rotation experiments were performed on the pnictide high temperature superconductor SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ with x=0.18 and 0.3. We observed an unusual enhancement of slow spin fluctuations in the vicinity of the superconducting which suggests that the spin fluctuations contribute to the formation of an unconventional superconducting state. An estimate of the in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ab}(0)=190(5)$\thinspace nm was obtained, which confirms that the pnictide superconductors obey an Uemura-style relationship between $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ and $λ_{ab}(0)^{-2}$.

Coexistence of the spin-density-wave and superconductivity in the (Ba,K)Fe2As2

The relation between the spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconducting order is a central topic in current research on the FeAs-based high Tc superconductors. Conflicting results exist in the LaFeAs(O,F)-class of materials, for which whether the SDW and superconductivity are mutually exclusive or they can coexist has not been settled. Here we show that for the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 system, the SDW and superconductivity can coexist in an extended range of compositions. The availability of single crystalline samples and high value of the energy gaps would make the materials a model system to investigate the high Tc ferropnictide superconductivity.

Structure and Magnetic Order in the NdFeAs(O,F) Superconductor System

The transition temperature Tc~26 K of the recently discovered superconductor LaFeAs(O,F) has been demonstrated to be extremely sensitive to the lanthanide ion, reaching 55 K for the Sm containing oxypnictides. Therefore, it is important to determine how the moment on the lanthanide affects the overall magnetism in these systems. Here we report a neutron diffraction study of the Nd oxypnictides. Long ranged antiferromagnetic order is apparent in NdFeAsO below 1.96 K. Rietveld refinement shows that both Fe and Nd magnetic ordering are required to describe the observed data with the staggered moment 1.55(4) Bohr magneton per Nd and 0.9(1) Bohr magneton per Fe at 0.3 K. The other structural properties such as the tetragonal-orthorhombic distortion are found to be very similar to those in LaFeAsO. Neither the magnetic ordering nor the structural distortion occur in the superconducting sample NdFeAsO0.80F0.20 at any temperatures down to 1.5 K.

Magnetic order in BaFe2As2, the parent compound of the FeAs based superconductors in a new structural family

In addition to higher Tc compared with the ubiquitous cuprates for a material composed of a single electronically active layer, the newly discovered LnFeAsO superconductors offer additional compositional variation. In a similar fashion to the CuO2 layers in cuprates, the FeAs layers now dominate the electronic states that produce superconductivity. Cuprate superconductors distinguish themselves structurally by adopting different stacking of the Cu-O and electronically inactive "spacer" layers. Using the same structural philosophy, materials with the formula (A,K)Fe2As2,A=Ba or Sr have been reported and possess a Tc~38 K. Here, we report the neutron diffraction studies of BaFe2As2 that shows, in contrast to previous studies on the LnFeAsO materials, an antiferromagnetic transition which concurs with first-order structural transition. Although the magnetic and structural transitions occur differently in the AFe2As2 and LnFeAsO-type materials, this work clearly demonstrates that the complete evolution to a low symmetry structure is a pre-requirement for the magnetic order.

Electronic structure and exotic exchange splitting in spin-density-wave states of BaFe$_2$As$_2$

The magnetic properties in the parent compounds are often intimately related to the microscopic mechanism of superconductivity. Here we report the first direct measurements on the electronic structure of a parent compound of the newly discovered iron-based superconductor, BaFe$_2$As$_2$, which provides a foundation for further studies. We show that the energy of the spin density wave (SDW) in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ is lowered through exotic exchange splitting of the band structure, rather than Fermi surface nesting of itinerant electrons. This clearly demonstrates that a metallic SDW state could be solely induced by interactions of local magnetic moments, resembling the nature of antiferromagnetic order in cuprate parent compounds.

Different resistivity response to spin density wave and superconductivity at 20 K in $Ca_{1-x}Na_xFe_2As_2$

We report that intrinsic transport and magnetic properties, and their anisotropy from high quality single crystal $CaFe_2As_2$. The resistivity anisotropy ($ρ_c/ρ_{ab}$) is $\sim 50 $, and less than 150 of $BaFe_2As_2$, which arises from the strong coupling along c-axis due to an apparent contraction of about 0.13 nm compared to $BaFe_2As_2$. Temperature independent anisotropy indicates that the transport in ab plane and along c-axis direction shares the same scattering mechanism. In sharp contrast to the case of parent compounds $ROFeAs$ (R=rare earth) and $MFe_2As_2$ (M=Ba and Sr), spin-density-wave (SDW) ordering (or structural transition) leads to a steep increase of resistivity in $CaFe_2As_2$. Such different resistivity response to SDW ordering is helpful to understand the role played by SDW ordering in Fe-based high-$T_c$ superconductors. The susceptibility behavior is very similar to that observed in single crystal $BaFe_2As_2$. A linear temperature dependent susceptibility occurs above SDW transition of about 165 K. Partial substitution of Na for Ca suppresses the SWD ordering (anomaly in resistivity) and induces occurrence of superconductivity at $\sim 20$ K.

Crystal structure and phase transitions across the metal-superconductor boundary in the SmFeAsO1-xFx (0 < x < 0.20) family

The fluorine-doped rare-earth iron oxyarsenides, REFeAsO1-xFx (RE =rare earth) have recently emerged as a new family of high-temperature superconductors with transition temperatures (Tc) as high as 55 K (refs 1-4). Early work has provided compelling evidence that the undoped parent materials exhibit spin-density-wave (SDW) antiferromagnetic order and undergo a structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic crystal symmetry upon cooling.5 Both the magnetic and structural instabilities are suppressed upon doping with fluoride ions before the appearance of superconductivity.6,7 Here we use high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction to study the structural properties of SmFeAsO1-xFx (0 < x < 0.20) in which superconductivity emerges near x ~ 0.07 and Tc increases monotonically with doping up to x ~ 0.20.8 We find that orthorhombic symmetry survives through the metal-superconductor boundary well into the superconducting regime 2 and the structural distortion is only suppressed at doping levels, x > 0.15 when the superconducting phase becomes metrically tetragonal. Remarkably this crystal symmetry crossover coincides with reported drastic anomalies in the resistivity and the Hall coefficient8 and a switch of the pressure coefficient of Tc from positive to negative,9 thereby implying that the low-temperature structure plays a key role in defining the electronic properties of these superconductors.

Far-infrared probe of superconductivity in SmO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs}

We report far-infrared reflectance measurements on polycrystalline superconducting samples of SmO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs ($x$ = 0.12, 0.15 and 0.2). We clearly observe superconductivity induced changes of reflectivity in a broad range of energies, which resembles earlier optical measurements on high $T_{c}$ cuprates. The superconducting-to-normal reflectivity ratio $R_{s}/R_{n}$ grows for the photon energies below 18 meV and shows a complicated structure due to the presence of a strong infrared-active phonon at about 10 meV.

Superconductivity induced by oxygen deficiency in Sr-doped LaOFeAs

We synthesized Sr-doped $La_{0.85}Sr_{0.15}OFeAs$ sample with single phase, and systematically studied the effect of oxygen deficiency in the Sr-doped LaOFeAs system. It is found that substitution of Sr for La indeed induces the hole carrier evidenced by positive thermoelectric power (TEP), but no bulk superconductivity is observed. The superconductivity can be realized by annealing the as-grown sample in vacuum to produce the oxygen deficiency. With increasing the oxygen deficiency, the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) increases and maximum $T_c$ reaches about 26 K the same as that in La(O,F)FeAs. TEP dramatically changes from positive to negative in the nonsuperconducting as-grown sample to the superconducting samples with oxygen deficiency. While $R_H$ is always negative for all samples (even for Sr-doped as grown sample). It suggests that the $La_{0.85}Sr_{0.15}O_{1-δ}FeAs$ is still electron-type superconductor.

Transport properties and superconductivity in $Ba_{1-x}M_xFe_2As_2$ (M=La and K) with double FeAs layers

We synthesized the samples $Ba_{1-x}M_xFe_2As_2$ (M=La and K) with $ThCr_2Si_2$-type structure. These samples were systematically characterized by resistivity, thermoelectic power (TEP) and Hall coefficient ($R_H$). $BaFe_2As_2$ shows an anomaly in resistivity at about 140 K. Substitution of La for Ba leads to a shift of the anomaly to low temperature, but no superconducting transition is observed. Potassium doping leads to suppression of the anomaly in resistivity and induces superconductivity at 38 K as reported by Rotter et al.\cite{rotter}. The Hall coefficient and TEP measurements indicate that the TEP is negative for $BaFe_2As_2$ and La-doped $BaFe_2As_2$, indicating n-type carrier; while potassium doping leads to change of the sign in $R_H$ and TEP. It definitely indicates p-type carrier in superconducting $Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2$ with double FeAs layers, being in contrast to the case of $LnO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ with single FeAs layer. A similar superconductivity is also observed in the sample with nominal composition $Ba_{1-x}K_xOFe_2As_2$.

Common Features in Electronic Structure of the Fe-Based Layered Superconductors from Photoemission Spectroscopy

High resolution photoemission measurements have been carried out on non-superconducting LaOFeAs parent compound and various superconducting R(O1-xFx)FeAs (R=La, Ce and Pr) compounds. We found that the parent LaOFeAs compound shows a metallic character. Through extensive measurements, we have identified several common features in the electronic structure of these Fe-based compounds: (1). 0.2 eV feature in the valence band; (2). A universal 13~16 meV feature; (3). A clear Fermi cutoff showing zero leading-edge shift in the superconducting state;(4). Lack of superconducting coherence peak(s); (5). Near EF spectral weight suppression with decreasing temperature. These universal features can provide important information about band structure, superconducting gap and pseudogap in these Fe-based materials.

Superconducting Gap and Pseudogap in Sm(O$_{1-x}$F$_x$)FeAs Layered Superconductor from Photoemission Spectroscopy

High resolution photoemission measurements have been carried out on non-superconducting SmOFeAs parent compound and superconducting Sm(O$_{1-x}$F$_x$)FeAs (x=0.12, and 0.15) compounds. The momentum-integrated spectra exhibit a clear Fermi cutoff that shows little leading-edge shift in the superconducting state which suggests the Fermi surface sheet(s) around the $Γ$ point may not be gapped in this multiband superconductors. A robust feature at 13 meV is identified in all these samples. Spectral weight suppression near E$_F$ with decreasing temperature is observed in both undoped and doped samples that points to a possible existence of a pseudogap in these Fe-based compounds.

Superconducting energy gap and c-axis plasma frequency of (Nd,Sm)O0.82F0.18FeAs superconductors from infrared ellipsometry

We present ellipsometric measurements of the far-infrared dielectric response of polycrystalline samples of the new pnictide superconductor RO0.82F0.18FeAs (R=Nd and Sm). We find evidence that the electronic properties are strongly anisotropic such that the optical spectra are dominated by the weakly conducting c-axis response similar as in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors (HTSC). Accordingly, we obtain an upper limit of the c-axis superconducting plasma frequency of $ω_{{\rm pl},c}^{\rm SC}\leq 260\cm$ which corresponds to a lower limit of the c-axis magnetic penetration depth of $λ_c\geq6\mum$ and an anisotropy of $λ_c/λ_{ab}\geq 30$ as compared to $λ_{ab}=185$ nm from muon spin rotation [A. Drew {\it et al.}, arXiv:0805.1042]. Also in analogy to the cuprate HTSC, our spectra exhibit the signatures of a gap-like suppression of the conductivity in the superconducting state with a large gap magnitude of $2Δ\approx300\cm$ (37 meV) and a ratio of $2Δ/k_{\rm B}\tc\approx8$ that is suggestive of strong coupling.

Phase Diagram and Quantum Critical Point in Newly Discovered Superconductors: SmO_{1-x}F_xFeAs

The magnetic fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point (QCP) are widely believed to cause the non-Fermi liquid behaviors and unconventional superconductivities, for example, in heavy fermion systems and high temperature cuprate superconductors. Recently, superconductivity has been discovered in iron-based layered compound $LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ with $T_c$=26 K\cite{yoichi}, and it competes with spin-density-wave (SDW) order\cite{dong}. Neutron diffraction shows a long-rang SDW-type antiferromagnetic (AF) order at $\sim 134$ K in LaOFeAs\cite{cruz,mcguire}. Therefore, a possible QCP and its role in this system are of great interests. Here we report the detailed phase diagram and anomalous transport properties of the new high-Tc superconductors $SmO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ discovered by us\cite{chenxh}. It is found that superconductivity emerges at $x\sim$0.07, and optimal doping takes place in the $x\sim$0.20 sample with highest $T_c \sim $54 K. While $T_c$ increases monotonically with doping, the SDW order is rapidly suppressed, suggesting a QCP around $x \sim$0.14. As manifestations, a linear temperature dependence of the resistivity shows up at high temperatures in the $x<0.14$ regime, but at low temperatures just above $T_c$ in the $x>0.14$ regime; a drop in carrier density evidenced by a pronounced rise in Hall coefficient are observed, which mimic the high-$T_c$ cuprates. The simultaneous occurrence of order, carrier density change and criticality makes a compelling case for a quantum critical point in this system.

Neutron scattering study of the oxypnictide superconductor La(O,F)FeAs

The newly discovered superconductor La(O,F)FeAs (Tc = 26 K) was investigated using the neutron scattering technique. No spin-density-wave (SDW) order was observed in the normal state nor in the superconducting state, both with and without an applied magnetic field of 9 T, consistent with the proposal that SDW and superconductivity are competing in the laminar materials. While our inelastic measurements offer no constraints on the spin dynamic response from d-wave pairing, an upper limit for the magnetic resonance peak predicted from an extended s-wave pairing mechanism is provided. Our measurements also support the energy scale of the calculated phonon spectrum which is used in electron-phonon coupling theory, and fails to produce the high observed Tc.

Superconductivity at 43 K in Samarium-arsenide Oxides $SmFeAsO_{1-x}F_x$

Since the discovery of high-transition temperature ($T_c$) superconductivity in layered copper oxides, extensive efforts have been devoted to explore the higher $T_c$ superconductivity. However, the $T_c$ higher than 40 K can be obtained only in the copper oxide superconductors so far. The highest reported value of $T_c$ for non-copper-oxide bulk superconductivity is 39 K in $MgB_2$.\cite{jun} The $T_c$ of about 40 K is close to or above the theoretical value predicted from BCS theory.\cite{mcmillan} Therefore, it is very significant to search for non-copper oxide superconductor with the transition temperature higher than 40 K to understand the mechanism of high-$T_c$ superconductivity. Here we report the discovery of bulk superconductivity in samarium-arsenide oxides $SmFeAsO_{1-x}F_x$ with ZrCuAiAs type structure. Resistivity and magnetization measurements show strong evidences for transition temperature as high as 43 K. $SmFeAsO_{1-x}F_x$ is the first non-copper oxide superconductor with $T_c$ higher than 40 K. The $T_c$ higher than 40 K may be a strong argument to consider $SmFeAsO_{1-x}F_x$ as an unconventional superconductor.

Transport properties and magnetic field induced localization in the misfit cobaltite [Bi$_2$Ba$_{1.3}$K$_{0.6}$Co$_{0.1}$]$^{RS}$[CoO$_2$]$_{1.97}$ single crystal

Resistivity under magnetic field, thermopower and Hall coefficient are systematically studied for [Bi$_2$Ba$_{1.3}$K$_{0.6}$Co$_{0.1}$]$^{RS}$[CoO$_2$]$_{1.97}$ single crystal. In-plane resistivity ($ρ_{ab}$(T)) shows metallic behavior down to 2 K with a $T^2$ dependence below 30 K; while out-of-plane resistivity ($ρ_{c}(T)$) shows metallic behavior at high temperature and a thermal activation semiconducting behavior below about 12 K. Striking feature is that magnetic field induces a ln(1/$T$) diverging behavior in both $ρ_{ab}$ and $ρ_{c}(T)$ at low temperature. The positive magnetoresistance (MR) could be well fitted by the formula based on multi-band electronic structure. The ln(1/$T$) diverging behavior in $ρ_{ab}$ and $ρ_{c}(T)$ could arise from the magnetic-field-induced 2D weak localization or spin density wave.

Evolution of the Electronic Structure of 1T-CuxTiSe2

The electronic structure of a new charge-density-wave/ superconductor system, 1T-CuxTiSe2, has been studied by photoemission spectroscopy. A correlated semiconductor band structure is revealed for the undoped case. With Cu doping, the charge density wave is suppressed by the raising of the chemical potential, while the superconductivity is enhanced by the enhancement of the density of states. Moreover, the strong scattering at high doping might be responsible for the suppression of superconductivity in that regime.
