Radiative and Collisional Jet Energy Loss in a Quark-Gluon Plasma

We calculate radiative and collisional energy loss of hard partons traversing the quark-gluon plasma created at RHIC and compare the respective size of these contributions. We employ the AMY formalism for radiative energy loss and include additionally energy loss by elastic collisions. Our treatment of both processes is complete at leading order in the coupling, and accounts for the probabilistic nature of jet energy loss. We find that a solution of the Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density distributions of partons is necessary for a complete calculation of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ for pion production in heavy ion collisions. It is found that the magnitude of $R_{AA}$ is sensitive to the inclusion of both collisional and radiative energy loss, while the average energy is less affected by the addition of collisional contributions. We present a calculation of $R_{AA}$ for $π^0$ at RHIC, combining our energy loss formalism with a relativistic (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic description of the thermalized medium.

Nuclear Suppression of Jets and R_AA at the LHC

The nuclear modification factor R_AA for charged hadron production at the LHC is predicted from jet energy loss induced by gluon bremsstrahlung. The Arnold, Moore, and Yaffe formalism is used, together with an ideal hydrodynamical model.

The pole structure of the unitary, crossing symmetric low energy $ππ$ scattering amplitudes

The pole structure of the low energy $ππ$ scattering amplitudes is studied using a proper chiral unitarization method combined with crossing symmetry and the low energy phase shift data. It is found that the $σ$ pole position is at $M_σ=470\pm 50MeV$, $Γ_σ=570\pm 50MeV$. The existence of the virtual state pole in the IJ=20 channel is reconfirmed. Various threshold parameters are estimated and are found in general in good agreement with the results obtained from the Roy equation analyses.

The $κ$ resonance in s wave $πK$ scatterings

A new unitarization approach incorporated with chiral symmetry is established and applied to study the $πK$ elastic scatterings. We demonstrate that the $κ$ resonance exists, if the scattering length parameter in the I=1/2, J=0 channel does not deviate much from its value predicted by chiral perturbation theory. The mass and width of the $κ$ resonance is found to be $M_κ=594\pm 79MeV$, $Γ_κ=724\pm 332MeV$, obtained by fitting the LASS data up to 1430MeV. Better determination to the pole parameters is possible if the chiral predictions on scattering lengths are taken into account.

The properties of the $σ$ and $κ$ resonances in a new unitarization approach

A new unitarization approach is discussed and applied to study the elastic $πK$ scattering process. The existence of the light $κ$ resonance is firmly established if the scattering length in the I=1/2 channel does not deviate too much from its value obtained from chiral perturbation theory, and a precise determination to the mass and width of the $κ$ resonance requires a precise determination of the scattering length parameter.
