Semi-numerical evaluation of one-loop corrections

We present a semi-numerical method to compute one-loop corrections to processes involving many particles. We treat in detail cases with up to five external legs and massless internal propagators, although the method is more general.

Resummation

We review the work discussed and developed under the topic ``Resummation'' at Working Group 2 ``Multijet final states and energy flow'', of the HERA-LHC Workshop. We emphasise the role played by HERA observables in the development of resummation tools via, for instance, the discovery and resummation of non-global logarithms. We describe the event-shapes subsequently developed for hadron colliders and present resummed predictions for the same using the automated resummation program CAESAR. We also point to ongoing studies at HERA which can be of benefit for future measurements at hadron colliders such as the LHC, specifically dijet $E_t$ and angular spectra and the transverse momentum of the Breit current hemisphere.

Towards pair production near threshold with unstable particle effective theory

We illustrate the use of effective theory techniques to describe processes involving unstable particles close to resonance. First, we present the main ideas in the context of a scalar resonance in an Abelian gauge-Yukawa model. We then outline the necessary modifications to describe W-pair production close to threshold in electron-positron collisions.

Numerical Evaluation of One-Loop Diagrams Near Exceptional Momentum Configurations

One problem which plagues the numerical evaluation of one-loop Feynman diagrams using recursive integration by part relations is a numerical instability near exceptional momentum configurations. In this contribution we will discuss a generic solution to this problem. As an example we consider the case of forward light-by-light scattering.

Les Houches 'Physics at Tev Colliders 2003' QCD/SM Working Group: Summary Report

This report documents the results obtained by the Working Group on Quantum Chromodynamics and the Standard Model for the Workshop `Physics at TeV Colliders'', Les Houches, France, 26 May - 6 June 2003. After a Monte Guide description, the first contributions report on progress in describing multiple interactions, important for the LHC, and underlying events. An announcement of a Monte Carlo database, under construction, is then followed by a number of contributions improving parton shower descriptions. Subsequently, a large number of contributions address resummations in various forms, after which follow studies of QCD effects in pion pair, top quark pair and photon pair plus jet production. After a study of electroweak corrections to hadronic precision observables, the report ends by presenting recent progress in methods to compute finite order corrections at one-loop with many legs, and at two-loop.

Generalized resummation of QCD final-state observables

The resummation of logarithmically-enhanced terms to all perturbative orders is a prerequisite for many studies of QCD final-states. Until now such resummations have always been performed by hand, for a single observable at a time. In this letter we present a general `master' resummation formula (and applicability conditions), suitable for a large class of observables. This makes it possible for next-to-leading logarithmic resummations to be carried out automatically given only a computer routine for the observable. To illustrate the method we present the first next-to-leading logarithmic resummed prediction for an event shape in hadronic dijet production.

Effective theory calculation of resonant high-energy scattering

Tests of the standard model and its hypothetical extensions require precise theoretical predictions for processes involving massive, unstable particles. It is well-known that ordinary weak-coupling perturbation theory breaks down due to intermediate singular propagators. Various pragmatic approaches have been developed to deal with this difficulty. In this paper we construct an effective field theory for resonant processes utilizing the hierarchy of scales between the mass of the unstable particle, M, and its width, Gamma. The effective theory allows calculations to be systematically arranged into a series in g^2 and Gamma/M, and preserves gauge invariance in every step. We demonstrate the applicability of this method by calculating explicitly the inclusive line shape of a scalar resonance in an abelian gauge-Yukawa model at next-to-leading order in Gamma/M and the weak couplings. We also discuss the extension to next-to-next-to-leading order and compute an interesting subset of these corrections.

Effective theory approach to unstable particle production

Using the hierarchy of scales between the mass, $M$, and the width, $Γ$, of a heavy, unstable particle we construct an effective theory that allows calculations for resonant processes to be systematically expanded in powers of the coupling $α$ and $Γ/M$. We illustrate the method by computing the next-to-leading order line shape of a scalar resonance in an abelian gauge-Yukawa model.

Out-of-plane QCD radiation in DIS events with high $P_T$ Jets

We present the QCD analysis of the out-of-event-plane momentum distribution in DIS events with high $p_t$ jets. The achieved accuracy allows the measurement of the running coupling and the study of non-perturbative effects, in particular the test of universality of power corrections in a new experimental regime.

Out-of-plane QCD radiation in DIS with high p_t jets

We present a QCD analysis of the cumulative out-of-event-plane momentum distribution in DIS process with emission of high p_t jets. We derive the all-order resummed result to next-to-leading accuracy and estimate the leading power correction. We aim at the same level of accuracy which, in e+e- annihilation, seems to be sufficient for making predictions. As is typical of multi-jet observables, the distribution depends on the geometry of the event and the underlying colour structure. This result should provide a powerful method to study QCD dynamics, in particular to constrain the parton distribution functions, to measure the running coupling and to search for genuine non-perturbative effects.

Semi-numerical resummation of event shapes

For many event-shape observables, the most difficult part of a resummation in the Born limit is the analytical treatment of the observable's dependence on multiple emissions, which is required at single logarithmic accuracy. We present a general numerical method, suitable for a large class of event shapes, which allows the resummation specifically of these single logarithms. It is applied to the case of the thrust major and the oblateness, which have so far defied analytical resummation and to the two-jet rate in the Durham algorithm, for which only a subset of the single logs had up to now been calculated.

Out-of-plane QCD radiation in hadronic Z0 production

We present the QCD analysis of the cumulative out-of-event-plane momentum distribution in the process proton-antiproton into Z0 and a hard jet (event plane defined by the proton, antiproton and Z0 momenta). Particular attention is placed on the near-to-planar events for which we derive the all-order resummed result to next-to-leading accuracy. We consider also the leading power correction originating from the fact that, even in hard processes, the resummed QCD coupling runs into the infrared region. We aim at the same level of accuracy which, in e+e- annihilation, seems to be sufficient for making predictions. Contributions from a ``soft underlying event'' due to beam remnant interactions are discussed. Experimental data (not yet available) are needed to cast light on the predictive level of standard QCD analysis in hard hadron-hadron collisions. We plot examples of the predicted distribution at Tevatron energies. The techniques here developed can be extended to other hard hadron-hadron and hadron-lepton processes.

QCD analysis of D-parameter in near-to-planar three-jet events

We present the QCD analysis of D-parameter distribution in near-to-planar 3-jet e+e- annihilation events. We derive the all-order resummed perturbative prediction and the leading power suppressed non-perturbative corrections both to the mean value and the distribution. Here non-perturbative corrections are larger than in 2-jet shape observables, so that higher order non-perturbative effects could be relevant. Experimental data (not yet available) are needed in order to cast light on this important point. The technique we develop aims at improving the accuracy of the theoretical description of multi-jet ensembles, in particular in hadron-hadron collisions.

Non-perturbative QCD analysis of near-to-planar three-jet events

We present the analysis of the 1/Q-suppressed non-perturbative (NP) contribution to the cumulative out-of-event-plane momentum distribution in e+e- annihilation in the near-to-planar three-jet region. It complements our previous study of the perturbative (PT) distributions resummed to single logarithmic accuracy. Due to inter-jet soft gluon radiation, the NP contributions (as well as the PT distributions) are sensitive to the geometry (the angles between jets) and the colour structure of the underlying hard process (topology of the three-prong parton antenna). The results and techniques presented here could be extended to other multi-jet processes and, in particular, to hadron-hadron collisions.
