Soft X-ray emissions of highly charged Si VII--Si XII in cool star--Procyon

Different observation data for cool star--Procyon (Obs\_IDs of 63, 1461 and 1224) available from {\it Chandra Data Public Archive} were co-added and analyzed. Emissivities of emission lines of highly charged silicon ions (Si VII--Si XII) were calculated over temperatures by adopting the published data of Liang et al. (2007, {\it Atom. Data and Nucl. Data Tables}, {\bf 93}, 375). Using the emission measure derived by Raassen et al. (2002, A&A, {\bf 389}, 228), the theoretical line fluxes are predicted, and the theoretical spectra are constructed by assuming the Gaussian profile with instrumental broadening (0.06 Å). By detailed comparison between observation and predictions, several emissions lines are identified firstly such as emissions at 43.663 Å(Si XI), 45.550 Å(Si XII), 46.179 Å(Si VIII), 50.874 Å(Si X), 64.668 Å(Si IX), and 73.189 Å(Si VII) etc. Several emission lines are re-assigned in this work, such as the emission line at 52.594 Åto Si X (52.612 Å), at 69.641 Åto the blending of Si VII (69.632 Å) and Si VIII (69.664 Å) lines, as well as at 70.050 Åto Si VII (70.027 Å). The prediction reveals the large discrepancies between the $3s$--$2p$ line (63.715 Å) {\it versus} 3d--$2p$ line (61.012 Å) again for lower charge stage Si VIII. Solar flare observation is also added for the assessment of present calculation. Different assignments for some lines between Procyon and solar flare, have been found to be due to the hotter emitter in Sun than in Procyon coronae.

Oxygen abundance methods in the SDSS: view from modern statistics

Our purpose is to find which is the most reliable one among various oxygen abundance determination methods. We will test the validity of several different oxygen abundance determination methods using methods of modern statistics. These methods include Bayesian analysis and information scoring. We will analyze a sample of $\sim$6000 $\hii$ galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic observations data release four. All methods that we used drew the same conclusion that the $T_e$ method is a more reliable oxygen abundance determination methods than the Bayesian metallcity method under the existing telescope ability. The ratios of the likelihoods between the different kinds of methods tell us that the $T_e$, $P$, and $O3N2$ methods are consistent with each other because the $P$ and $O3N2$ method are calibrated by $T_e$-method. The Bayesian and $R_{23}$ method are consistent with each other because both are calibrated by a galaxy model. In either case, the $N2$ method is an {\it unreliable} method.

NeIII/OII as an oxygen abundance indicator in the HII regions and HII galaxies

To calibrate the relationship between Ne3O2 (Ne3O2 = log(\neiii$\lambda3869$/\oii$\lambda3727$)) and oxygen abundances, we present a sample of $\sim$3000 $\hii$ galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release four. They are associated with a sample from the literature intended to enlarge the oxygen abundance region. We calculated the electron temperatures ($T_e$) of 210 galaxies in the SDSS sample with the direct method, and $T_e$ of the other 2960 galaxies in SDSS sample calculated with an empirical method. Then, we use a linear least-square fitting to calibrate the Ne3O2 oxygen abundance indicator. It is found that the Ne3O2 estimator follows a linear relation with \zoh\ that holds for the whole abundance range covered by the sample, from approximately 7.0 to 9.0. The best linear relationship between the Ne3O2 and the oxygen abundance is calibrated. The dispersion between oxygen abundance and Ne3O2 index in the metal rich galaxies may come partly from the moderate depletion of oxygen onto grains. The $Ne3O2$ method has the virtue of being single-valued and not affected by internal reddening. As a result, the $Ne3O2$ method can be a good metallicity indicator in the \hii regions and \hii galaxies, especially in high-redshift galaxies.

A Substellar Companion to the Intermediate-Mass Giant 11 Com

We report the detection of a substellar companion orbiting the intermediate-mass giant star 11 Com (G8 III). Precise Doppler measurements of the star from Xinglong station and Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO) revealed Keplerian velocity variations with an orbital period of 326.03 +/- 0.32 days, a semiamplitude of 302.8 +/- 2.6 m/s, and an eccentricity of 0.231 +/- 0.005. Adopting a stellar mass of 2.7 +/- 0.3 M_solar, the minimum mass of the companion is 19.4 +/- 1.5 M_Jup, well above the deuterium burning limit, and the semimajor axis is 1.29 +/- 0.05 AU. This is the first result from the joint planet search program between China and Japan aiming at revealing statistics of substellar companions around intermediate-mass giants. 11 Com b emerged from 300 targets of the planet search program at OAO. The current detection rate of a brown dwarf candidate seems to be comparable to that around solar-type stars within orbital separations of $\sim$3 AU.

Optical multi-band observations of BL Lacertae during the outburst of 2005

The aim of our observations is to investigate the intranight variability properties and the spectral variability of BL Lacertae. 799 optical multi-band observations were intensively made with the Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) 60/90cm Schmidt telescope during the outburst composed of two subsequent flares in 2005. The second flare, whose rising phase lasted at least 44 days, was observed with amplitudes of more than 1.1 mag in three BATC optical bands. In general, on intranight timescale the amplitude of variability and the variation rate are larger at the shorter wavelength, and the variation rate is comparable in the rising and decaying phases within each band. A possible time lag between the light curves in bands e and m, around 11.6 minutes, was obtained. Based on the analysis of the colour index variation with the source brightness, the variability of BL Lacertae can be interpreted as having two components: a "strongly-chromatic" intranight component and a "mildly-chromatic" internight component, which may be the results of both intrinsic physical mechanism and geometric effects.

The optical spectral slope variability of 17 blazars

Many quasi-simultaneous optical observations of 17 blazars are obtained from previous papers published over the last 19 years in order to investigate the spectral slope variability and understand the radiation mechanism of blazars. The long-period dereddened optical spectral slopes are calculated. We analyse the average spectral slope distribution, which suggests that the spectra of flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and high energy peaked BL Lac objects (HBLs) are probably deformed by other emission components. The average spectral slopes of low energy peaked BL Lac objects(LBLs), which scatter around 1.5, show a good accordance with the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) loss-dominated model. We present and discuss the variability between the spectral slope and optical luminosity. The spectra of all HBLs and LBLs get flatter when they turn brighter, while for FSRQs this trend does not exist or may even be reversed. This phenomenon may imply that there is a thermal contribution to the optical spectrum for FSRQs. For the FSRQ 1156+295, there is a hint that the slope gets flatter at both the brightest and faintest states. Our result shows that three subclasses locate in different regions in the pattern of slope variability indicator versus average spectral slope. The relativistic jet mechanism is supported by the significant correlation between the optical Doppler factor and the average spectral slope.

A Comparative Study on Lithium Abundances in Solar--Type Stars With and Without Planets

We have investigated the abundance anomalies of lithium for stars with planets in the temperature range of 5600--5900 K reported by Israelian and coworkers, as compared to 20 normal stars at the same temperature and metallicity ranges. Our result indicates a higher probability of lithium depletion for stars with planets in the main--sequence stage. It seems that stellar photospheric abundances of lithium in stars with planets may be somewhat affected by the presence of planets. Two possible mechanisms are considered to account for the lower Li abundances of stars with planets. One is related to the rotation-induced mixing due to the conservation of angular momentum by the protoplanetary disk, and the other is a shear instability triggered by planet migration. These results provide new information on stellar evolution and the lithium evolution of the Galaxy.

The puzzling abundance pattern of HD134439 and HD134440

Abundances of 18 elements are determined for the common proper-motion pair, HD134439 and HD134440, which shows high [Mn/Fe] and low [α/Fe] ratios as compared to normal halo stars. Moreover, puzzling abundances are indicated from elements whose origins are normally considered to be from the same nucleosynthesis history. Particularly, we have found that [Mg/Fe] and [Si/Fe] are lower than [Ca/Fe] and [Ti/Fe] by 0.1-0.3 dex. When elemental abundances are interpreted in term of their condensation temperatures (Tc), obvious trends of [X/Fe] vs. Tc for alpha elements and probably iron-peak elements as well are shown. The hypothesis that these stars have formed from a dusty environment in dSph galaxy provides a solution to the puzzling abundance pattern.

Barium even-to-odd isotope abundance ratios in thick disk and thin disk stars

We present the Ba even-to-odd isotope abundance ratios in 25 cool dwarf stars with the metallicity [Fe/H] ranged between 0.25 and --1.35. Our method takes advantage of the hyperfine structure (HFS) affecting the \ion{Ba}{ii} resonance line of the odd isotopes. The fractional abundance of the odd isotopes of Ba is derived from a requirement that Ba abundances from the resonance line $λ4554$ and subordinate lines $λ5853$ and $λ6496$ must be equal. The results are based on NLTE line formation and analysis of high resolution (R $\sim60000$) high signal-to-noise (S/N $\ge 200$) observed spectra. We find that the fraction of the odd isotopes of Ba grows toward the lower Ba abundance (or metallicity) and the mean value in the thick disk stars equals 33 $\pm$ 4%. This indicates the higher contribution of the $r-$process to barium in the thick disk stars compared to the solar system matter. The obtained fraction increases with the [Eu/Ba] abundance ratio growth in agreement with expectations. A significant fraction of the \emph{even} isotopes of Ba found in old Galactic stars (the thick disk stars), $\sim67$%, is in contrast to the prediction of the "classical" model of the $s-$process and favors the value predicted by the "stellar" models of Arlandini et al. (1999) and Travaglio et al. (1999).

Harmonic QPOs and Thick Accretion Disk Oscillations in BL Lac Object AO 0235+164

Periodic outbursts are observed in many AGNs and usually explained with a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) scenario. However, multiple periods are observed in some AGNs and cannot be explained with it. Here we analyze the periodicity of the radio light curves of AO 0235+164 at multi-frequencies and report the discovery of six QPOs in integer ratio 1:2:3:4:5:6 of QPO frequencies, of which the second with period $P_2 = (5.46 \pm 0.47) {\rm yr}$ is the strongest. We fit the radio light curves and show that the initial phases of six QPOs have zero or $π$ differences relative to each other. We suggest a harmonic relationship of QPOs. The centroid frequency, relative strength, harmonic relationship and relative initial phases of QPOs are independent of radio frequency. The harmonic QPOs are likely due to the quasi-periodic injection of plasma from an oscillating accretion disk into the jet. We estimate the supermassive black hole mass $M_{\rm BH} \simeq (4.72\pm 2.04) \times 10^8 M_\odot$ and the accretion rate $\dot{m}\simeq 0.007$. With the knowledge of accretion disk, it implies that the inner region of accretion disk of AO 0235+164 is a radiatively inefficient accretion flow. The oscillation accretion is due to the p-mode oscillation of the thick disk probably excited by a SMBHB. The theoretical predications of fundamental oscillation frequency and the harmonics are well consistent with the observations. Harmonic QPOs would be absent when the thick disk becomes geometrically thin due to the increase of accretion rate. We discuss the observations of AO 0235+164 basing on the SMBHB-thick disk oscillation scenario.

Electron density diagnostic potential of Ar XIV soft X-ray emission lines

Theoretical electron density-sensitive line ratios $R_1 - R_6$ of Ar XIV soft X-ray emission lines are presented. We found that these line ratios are sensitive to electron density $n_e$, and the ratio $R_1$ is insensitive to electron temperature $T_e$. Recent work has shown that accurate atomic data, such as electron impact excitation rates, is very important for reliable determination of the electron density of laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. Present work indicates that the maximum discrepancy of line ratios introduced from different atomic data calculated with distorted wave and R-matrix approximations, is up to 18% in the range of $n_e=10^{9-13}$cm$^{-3}$. By comparison of these line ratios with experiment results carried out in electron beam ion trap (EBIT-II), electron density of the laboratory plasma is diagnosed, and a consistent result is obtained from $R_1$, $R_2$ and $R_3$. Our result is in agreement with that diagnosed by Chen et al using triplet of N VI. A relative higher diagnosed electron density from $R_2$ is due to its weak sensitivity to electron temperature. A better consistency at lower $T_e$ indicates that temperature of the laboratory plasma is lower than log$T_e$(K)=6.5. Comparison between the measured and theoretical ratios reveals that 32.014~Åline is weakly blended by lines from other Ar ions, while 30.344~Åline is strongly contaminated.

Determinations of temperature and density for solar-like Stars using Si XI soft X-ray emission lines

We study temperature and density sensitivities of ratios of Si XI soft X-ray emission lines, in the wavelength range of 43--54Å. The typical temperature of the formation of the analyzed lines is around 1.6~MK, which makes this analysis complementary to the analysis of He-like triplets being sensitive to hotter plasma. We present theoretical calculations and compare them with ratios obtained from high-resolution X-ray spectra of five solar-like stars: Procyon, $α$ Cen A$&$B, $ε$ Eri, and Capella. We find that our results are in good agreement with results obtained by other authors through different diagnostics, namely the analysis of density- and temperature-sensitive He-like triplet lines. We further estimate the coronal pressure and filling factors from Si~XI lines in this study.

IR-source IRAS20508+2011: spectral variability of the central star

Over the five years of high-resolution spectroscopy of the cool star identified with the IR source IRAS20508+2011, the photospheric radial velocity variability Vr=15-30km/s is detected. In the same time, the Halpha profile varied from an intense bell-shaped emission line with a small absorption to 2-peaked emission with a central absorption feature below the continuum level. The NaD doublet lines shown a complex profile with broad (FWHM \approx 120km/s) emission and photospheric absorption, as well as an interstellar component. We used model atmospheres to determine the physical parameters and chemical composition of the star's atmosphere: Te=4800K, log g=1.5, [Fe/H]=-0.36, [O/Fe] =+1.79 (with the ratio [C/O]=-0.9). The totality of the parameters suggests that the optical component of IRAS20508+2011 is an O-rich AGB star with luminosity Mv

Coronal density diagnostics with Si X: CHANDRA/LETGS observations of Procyon, $α$ Cen A$&$B, Capella and $ε$ Eri

Electron density diagnostics based on a line intensity ratio of Si X are applied to the X-ray spectra of Procyon, $α$ Cen A$&$B, Capella and $ε$ Eri measured with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) combined with High-resolution Camera (HRC) on board the {\it Chandra X-ray Observatory}. The ratio $R_1$ of the intensities of the Si X lines at 50.524 Åand 50.691 Åis adopted. A certain of the temperature effect in $R_1$ appears near the low-density limit region, which is due to the contamination of Si X line at 50.703 Å. Using the emission measure distribution (EMD) model derived by Audard et al. (2001) for Capella and emissivities calculated with APEC model by Smith et al. (2001), we successfully estimate contributions of Fe XVI lines at 50.367 Åand 50.576 Å(73% and 62%, respectively). A comparison between observed ratios and theoretical predictions constrains the electron densities (in logarithmic) for Procyon to be 8.61$^{+0.24}_{-0.20}$ cm$^{-3}$, while for $α$ Cen A$&$B, Capella and $ε$ Eri to be 8.81$^{+0.27}_{-0.23}$ cm$^{-3}$, 8.60$^{+0.39}_{0.32}$ cm$^{-3}$, 9.30$_{-0.48}$ cm$^{-3}$ and 9.11$^{+1.40}_{-0.38}$ cm$^{-3}$, respectively. The comparison of our results with those constrained by the triplet of He-like carbon shows a good agreement. For normal stars, our results display a narrow uncertainty, while for active stars, a relatively larger uncertainty, due to the contamination from Fe XVI lines, is found. Another possible reason may be that the determination of the continuum level, since the emission lines of Si X become weak for the active stars. For $ε$ Eri, an electron density in the C V forming region was estimated firstly through Si X emissions.

All-optical switching due to state-filling in quantum dots

We report all-optical switching due to state-filling in quantum dots (QDs) within a Mach-Zehnder Interferometric (MZI) switch. The MZI was fabricated using InGaAsP/InP waveguides containing a single layer of InAs/InP QDs. A 1530-1570 nm probe beam is switched by optical excitation of one MZI-arm from the top. By exciting below the InGaAsP bandgap, we prove that the refractive index nonlinearity is only due to the QDs. The switching efficiency is 2 rad/(microW absorbed power). Probe wavelength insensitivity was obtained using a broad distribution of QDs.

The [Zn/Fe] -- [Fe/H] trend for disk and halo stars

Zn abundances, derived from a model atmosphere analysis of the 6362.35 A ZnI line, are presented for 44 thin disk, 10 thick disk and 8 halo dwarf stars in the metallicity range -1.0 [Fe/H] +0.2. It is found that [Zn/Fe] in thin disk stars shows a slight increasing trend with decreasing metallicity reaching a value [Zn/Fe] ~ +0.1 at [Fe/H] = -0.6. The thick disk stars in the metallicity range -0.9 < [Fe/H] < -0.6 have an average [Zn/Fe] ~ +0.15 dex, whereas five alpha-poor and Ni-poor halo stars in the same metallicity range have [Zn/Fe] ~ 0.0 dex. These results indicate that Zn is not an exact tracer of Fe as often assumed in abundance studies of damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs). A better understanding of the nucleosynthesis of Zn is needed in order to obtain more detailed information on the past history of star formation in DLAs from e.g. the observed sulphur/zinc ratio.

Sodium abundances in nearby disk stars

We present sodium abundances for a sample of nearby stars. All results have been derived from NLTE statistical equilibrium calculations. The influence of collisional interactions with electrons and hydrogen atoms is evaluated by comparison of the solar spectrum with very precise fits to the Na I line cores. The NLTE effects are more pronounced in metal-poor stars since the statistical equilibrium is dominated by collisions of which at least the electronic component is substantially reduced. The resulting influence on the determination of sodium abundances is in a direction opposite to that found previously for Mg and Al. The NLTE corrections are about -0.1 in thick-disk stars with [Fe/H] about -0.6. Our [Na/Fe] abundance ratios are about solar for thick- and thin-disk stars. The increase in [Na/Fe] as a function of [Fe/H] for metal-rich stars found by Edvardsson et al. (1993) is confirmed. Our results suggest that sodium yields increase with the metallicity, and quite large amounts of sodium may be produced by AGB stars. We find that [Na/Fe]ratios, together with either [Mg/Fe] ratio, kinematic data or stellar evolutionary ages, make possible the individual discrimination between thin- and thick-disk membership.

Chemical compositions of four barium stars

Chemical compositions of four barium stars HD 26886, HD 27271, HD 50082 and HD 98839 are studied based on high resolution, high signal-to-noise Echelle spectra. Results show that all of them are disk stars. Their αand iron peak elements are similar to the solar abundances. The neutron-capture process elements are overabundant relative to the Solar. The heavy-element abundances of the strong Ba star HD 50082 are higher than those of other three mild Ba stars. Its mass is 1.32Msun (+0.28,-0.22Msun), and is consistent with the average mass of strong Ba stars (1.5Msun). For mild Ba star HD 27271 and HD 26886, the derived masses are 1.90Msun (+0.25,-0.20Msun) and 2.78Msun (+0.75,-0.78M_sun), respectively, which are consistent with the average mass of mild Ba stars. We also calculate the theoretical abundances of Ba stars by combining the AGB stars nucleosynthesis and wind accretion formation scenario of Ba binary systems. The comparisons between the observed abundance patterns of the sample stars with the theoretical results show that wind accretion scenario can explain the abundance patterns of HD 50082 and HD 27271 well, but fail to explain the abundances of HD 26886. It means that the mild Ba star HD 26886, with shorter orbital period (P<1600 d), may be formed from other scenarios. The high mass mild Ba star HD 98839, with 3.62M_sun, and with very long orbital period (P>11000 d), may be either a star with the heavy elements enriched by itself or a "true Ba" star.
