Compactification of 6d minimal SCFTs on Riemann surfaces

We study compactifications on Riemann surfaces with punctures of N=(1,0) 6d SCFTs with a one dimensional tensor branch and no continuous global symmetries. The effective description of such models on the tensor branch is in terms of pure gauge theories with decoupled tensor. For generic Riemann surfaces, the resulting theories in four dimensions are expected to have N=1 supersymmetry. We compute the anomalies expected from the resulting 4d theories by integrating the anomaly polynomial of the 6d theory on the Riemann surface. For the cases with 6d gauge models with gauge groups SU(3) and SO(8) we further propose a field theory construction for the resulting 4d theories. For the 6d SU(3) theory, we argue that the theories in four dimensions are quivers with SU(3) gauge nodes and free chiral fields. The theories one obtains from the 6d SO(8) gauge theory are quivers with SU(4) gauge groups and chiral fields with R charge a half. In the last case the theories constructed for general Riemann surfaces involve gauging of symmetries appearing at strong coupling. The conformal manifolds of the models are constructed from gauge couplings and baryonic superpotentials. We support our conjectures by matching the dimensions of the conformal manifolds with complex structure moduli of the Riemann surfaces, matching anomalies between six and four dimensions, and checking the dualities related to different pair of pants decompositions of the surfaces. As a simple application of the results we conjecture that SU(3) gauge theory with nine flavors in four dimensions has a duality group acting on the seven dimensional conformal manifold which is the mapping class group of sphere with ten marked points.

Compactifications of ADE conformal matter on a torus

In this paper we study compactifications of ADE type conformal matter, N M5 branes probing ADE singularity, on torus with flux for global symmetry. We systematically construct the four dimensional theories by first going to five dimensions and studying interfaces. We claim that certain interfaces can be associated with turning on flux in six dimensions. The interface models when compactified on a circle comprise building blocks for constructing four dimensional models associated to flux compactifications of six dimensional theories on a torus. The theories in four dimensions turn out to be quiver gauge theories and the construction implies many interesting cases of IR symmetry enhancements and dualities of such theories.

Comments on the twisted punctures of $A_\text{even}$ class S theory

We point out that the $\text{USp}$ symmetry associated to a full twisted puncture of a class S theory of type $A_\text{even}$ has the global anomaly associated to $π_4(\text{USp})=\mathbb{Z}_2$. We discuss manifestations of this fact in the context of the superconformal field theory $R_{2,2N}$ introduced by Chacaltana, Distler and Trimm. For example, we find that this theory can be thought of as a natural ultraviolet completion of an infrared-free $\text{SO}(2N+1)$ gauge theory with $2N$ flavors, whose $\text{USp}(4N)$ symmetry clearly has the global anomaly.

4d N=1 from 6d N=(1,0) on a torus with fluxes

Compactifying N=(1,0) theories on a torus, with additional fluxes for global symmetries, we obtain N=1 supersymmetric theories in four dimensions. It is shown that for many choices of flux these models are toric quiver gauge theories with singlet fields. In particular we compare the anomalies deduced from the description of the six-dimensional theory and the anomalies of the quiver gauge theories. We also give predictions for anomalies of four-dimensional theories corresponding to general compactifications of M5-branes probing C_2/Z_k singularities.

Discrete Gauging in Six Dimensions

When $n$ M5 branes coincide on an A type singularity, $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$, there is a multitude of tensionless strings which arise in the spectrum. The low energy theory when all M5 branes are separated at the singularity is given by a linear quiver with parameters $n$ and $k$. The theory has a multitude of phases, as many as partitions of $n$, each characterized by a different Higgs branch. Each such Higgs branch can be described by a Coulomb branch of a 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver. For example, at finite coupling, when all branes are separated, the quiver has a bouquet of $n$ $U(1)$ nodes connected to a single node. There is a natural discrete non Abelian $S_n$ global symmetry which acts in the theory by permuting $n$ identical objects. It acts in particular on the Higgs branch at the above finite coupling phase. It is conjectured that at the coincident point this discrete $S_n$ flavor symmetry is gauged, and at partial coincidence the corresponding subgroup of $S_n$ is gauged. This elegant and simple effect solves several problems which are raised recently on the physics of multiple M5 branes on an A type singularity. Similar results on multitude of phases are concluded for a system of $n$ M5 branes on an A type singularity next to an M9 plane.

D-type Conformal Matter and SU/USp Quivers

We discuss the four dimensional models obtained by compactifying a single M5 brane probing $D_{N}$ singularity (minimal D-type $(1,0)$ conformal matter in six dimensions) on a torus with flux for abelian subgroups of the $SO(4N)$ flavor symmetry. We derive the resulting quiver field theories in four dimensions by first compactifying on a circle and relating the flux to duality domain walls in five dimensions. This leads to novel ${\cal N}=1$ dualities in 4 dimensions which arise from distinct five dimensional realizations of the circle compactifications of the D-type conformal matter.

3d Coulomb branch and 5d Higgs branch at infinite coupling

The Higgs branch of minimally supersymmetric five dimensional SQCD theories increases in a significant way at the UV fixed point when the inverse gauge coupling is tuned to zero. It has been a long standing problem to figure out how, and to find an exact description of this Higgs branch. This paper solves this problem in an elegant way by proposing that the Coulomb branches of three dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories, named "Exceptional Sequences", provide the solution to the problem. Thus, once again, 3d ${\cal N}=4$ Coulomb branches prove to be useful tools in solving problems in higher dimensions. Gauge invariant operators on the 5d side consist of classical objects such as mesons, baryons and gaugino bilinears, and non perturbative objects such as instanton operators with or without baryon number. On the 3d side we have classical objects such as Casimir invariants and non perturbative objects such as monopole operators, bare or dressed. The duality map works in a very interesting way.

Between symmetry and duality in supersymmetric QFT

We study two cases of interrelations between enhancement of symmetries in the infra red (IR) and duality properties of supersymmetric quantum field theories in four dimensions. First we discuss an SU(2) N=1 model with four flavors, singlet fields, and a superpotential. We show that this model flows to a conformal field theory with E_6\times U(1) global symmetry. The enhancement of the flavor symmetry follows from Seiberg duality. The second example is concerned with an SU(4) gauge theory with matter in the fundamental and antisymmetric representations. We argue that this model has enhanced SO(12) symmetry in the IR, and then guided by this enhancement, we deduce a new IR duality.

E_8 orbits of IR dualities

We discuss USp(2n) supersymmetric models with eight fundamental fields and a field in the antisymmetric representation. Turning on the most generic superpotentials, coupling pairs of fundamental fields to powers of the antisymmetric field while preserving an R symmetry, we give evidence for the statement that the models are connected by a large network of dualities which can be organized into orbits of the Weyl group of E_8. We make also several curious observations about such models. In particular, we argue that a USp(2m) model with the addition of singlet fields and even rank m flows in the IR to a CFT with E_7 U(1) symmetry. We also discuss an infinite number of duals for the USp(2) theory with eight fundamentals and no superpotential.

E-String Theory on Riemann Surfaces

We study compactifications of the 6d E-string theory, the theory of a small E_8 instanton, to four dimensions. In particular we identify N=1 field theories in four dimensions corresponding to compactifications on arbitrary Riemann surfaces with punctures and with arbitrary non-abelian flat connections as well as fluxes for the abelian sub-groups of the E_8 flavor symmetry. This sheds light on emergent symmetries in a number of 4d N=1 SCFTs (including the `E7 surprise' theory) as well as leads to new predictions for a large number of 4-dimensional exceptional dualities and symmetries.

$E_8$ instantons on type-A ALE spaces and supersymmetric field theories

We consider the 6d superconformal field theory realized on M5-branes probing the $E_8$ end-of-the-world brane on the deformed and resolved $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$ singularity. We give an explicit algorithm which determines, for arbitrary holonomy at infinity, the 6d quiver gauge theory on the tensor branch, the type-A class S description of the $T^2$ compactification, and the star-shaped quiver obtained as the mirror of the $T^3$ compactification.

Towards Classification of 5d SCFTs: Single Gauge Node

We propose a number of apparently equivalent criteria necessary for the consistency of a 5d SCFT in its Coulomb phase and use these criteria to classify 5d SCFTs arising from a gauge theory with simple gauge group. These criteria include the convergence of the 5-sphere partition function; the positivity of particle masses and monopole string tensions; and the positive definiteness of the metric in some region in the Coulomb branch. We find that for large rank classical groups simple classes of SCFTs emerge where the bounds on the matter content and the Chern-Simons level grow linearly with rank. For classical groups of rank less than or equal to 8, our classification leads to additional cases which do not fit in the large rank analysis. We also classify the allowed matter content for all exceptional groups.

Exceptionally simple exceptional models

We discuss models with no dynamical vector fields in various dimensions which we claim might have exceptional symmetry on some loci of their parameter space. In particular we construct theories with four supercharges flowing to theories with global symmetry enhancing to $F_4$, $E_6$, and $E_7$. The main evidence for these claims is based on extracting information about the symmetry properties of the theories from their supersymmetric partition functions.

Compactifications of 5d SCFTs with a twist

We study the compactification of 5d SCFTs to 4d on a circle with a twist in a discrete global symmetry element of these SCFTs. We present evidence that this leads to various 4d N=2 isolated SCFTs. These include many known theories as well as seemingly new ones. The known theories include the recently discovered rank 1 SU(4) SCFT and its mass deformations. One application of the new SCFTs is in the dual descriptions of the 4d gauge theory SU(N)+1S+(N-2)F. Also interesting is the appearance of a theory with rank 1 and $F_4$ global symmetry.

4d N=1 from 6d (1,0)

We study the geometry of 4d N=1 SCFT's arising from compactification of 6d (1,0) SCFT's on a Riemann surface. We show that the conformal manifold of the resulting theory is characterized, in addition to moduli of complex structure of the Riemann surface, by the choice of a connection for a vector bundle on the surface arising from flavor symmetries in 6d. We exemplify this by considering the case of 4d N=1 SCFT's arising from M5 branes probing Z_k singularity compactified on a Riemann surface. In particular, we study in detail the four dimensional theories arising in the case of two M5 branes on Z_2 singularity. We compute the conformal anomalies and indices of such theories in 4d and find that they are consistent with expectations based on anomaly and the moduli structure derived from the 6 dimensional perspective.

Anomaly matching on the Higgs branch

We point out that we can almost always determine by the anomaly matching the full anomaly polynomial of a supersymmetric theory in 2d, 4d or 6d if we assume that its Higgs branch is the one-instanton moduli space of some group G. This method not only provides by far the simplest method to compute the central charges of known theories of this class, e.g. 4d E_{6,7,8} theories of Minahan and Nemeschansky or the 6d E-string theory, but also gives us new pieces of information about unknown theories of this class.

Brane webs in the presence of an $O5^-$-plane and 4d class S theories of type D

In this article we conjecture a relationship between 5d SCFT's, that can be engineered by 5-brane webs in the presence of an $O5^-$-plane, and 4d class S theories of type D. The specific relation is that compactification on a circle of the former leads to the latter. We present evidence for this conjecture. One piece of evidence, which is also an interesting application of this, is that it suggests identifications between different class S theories. This can in turn be tested by comparing their central charges.

Brane webs, $5d$ gauge theories and $6d$ $\mathcal{N}$$=(1,0)$ SCFT's

We study $5d$ gauge theories that go in the UV to $6d$ $\mathcal{N}$$=(1,0)$ SCFT. We focus on these theories that can be engineered in string theory by brane webs. Given a theory in this class, we propose a method to determine the $6d$ SCFT it goes to. We also discuss the implication of this to the compactification of the resulting $6d$ SCFT on a torus to $4d$. We test and demonstrate this method with a variety of examples.
