Out-of-horizon correlations following a quench in a relativistic quantum field theory

One of the manifestations of relativistic invariance in non-equilibrium quantum field theory is the "horizon effect" a.k.a. light-cone spreading of correlations: starting from an initially short-range correlated state, measurements of two observers at distant space-time points are expected to remain independent until their past light-cones overlap. Surprisingly, we find that in the presence of topological excitations correlations can develop outside of horizon and indeed even between infinitely distant points. We demonstrate this effect for a wide class of global quantum quenches to the sine-Gordon model. We point out that besides the maximum velocity bound implied by relativistic invariance, clustering of initial correlations is required to establish the "horizon effect". We show that quenches in the sine-Gordon model have an interesting property: despite the fact that the initial states have exponentially decaying correlations and cluster in terms of the bosonic fields, they violate the clustering condition for the soliton fields, which is argued to be related to the non-trivial field topology. The nonlinear dynamics governed by the solitons makes the clustering violation manifest also in correlations of the local bosonic fields after the quench.

Chiral entanglement in massive quantum field theories in 1+1 dimensions

We determine both analytically and numerically the entanglement between chiral degrees of freedom in the ground state of massive perturbations of 1+1 dimensional conformal field theories quantised on a cylinder. Analytic predictions are obtained from a variational Ansatz for the ground state in terms of smeared conformal boundary states recently proposed by J. Cardy, which is validated by numerical results from the Truncated Conformal Space Approach. We also extend the scope of the Ansatz by resolving ground state degeneracies exploiting the operator product expansion. The chiral entanglement entropy is computed both analytically and numerically as a function of the volume. The excellent agreement between the analytic and numerical results provides further validation for Cardy's Ansatz. The chiral entanglement entropy contains a universal $O(1)$ term $γ$ for which an exact analytic result is obtained, and which can distinguish energetically degenerate ground states of gapped systems in 1+1 dimensions.

Correlation Functions of the Quantum Sine-Gordon Model in and out of Equilibrium

Complete information on the equilibrium behaviour and dynamics of a quantum field theory (QFT) is provided by multipoint correlation functions. However, their theoretical calculation is a challenging problem, even for exactly solvable models. This has recently become an experimentally relevant problem, due to progress in cold-atom experiments simulating QFT models and directly measuring higher order correlations. Here we compute correlation functions of the quantum sine-Gordon model, a prototype integrable model of central interest from both theoretical and experimental points of view. Building upon the so-called Truncated Conformal Space Approach, we numerically construct higher order correlations in a system of finite size in various physical states of experimental relevance, both in and out of equilibrium. We measure deviations from Gaussianity due to the presence of interaction and analyse their dependence on temperature, explaining the experimentally observed crossover between Gaussian and non-Gaussian regimes. We find that correlations of excited states are markedly different from the thermal case, which can be explained by the integrability of the system. We also study dynamics after a quench, observing the effects of the interaction on the time evolution of correlation functions, their spatial dependence, and their non-Gaussianity as measured by the kurtosis.

Form factor relocalisation and interpolating renormalisation group flows from the staircase model

We investigate the staircase model, introduced by Aliosha Zamolodchikov through an analytic continuation of the sinh-Gordon S-matrix to describe interpolating flows between minimal models of conformal field theory in two dimensions. Applying the form factor expansion and the c-theorem, we show that the resulting c-function has the same physical content as that found by Zamolodchikov from the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. This turns out to be a consequence of a nontrivial underlying mechanism, which leads to an interesting localisation pattern for the spectral integrals giving the multi-particle contributions. We demonstrate several aspects of this form factor relocalisation, which suggests a novel approach to the construction of form factors and spectral sums in integrable renormalisation group flows with non-diagonal scattering.

Boundary State in an Integrable Quantum Field Theory Out of Equilibrium

We study a quantum quench of the mass and the interaction in the Sinh-Gordon model starting from a large initial mass and zero initial coupling. Our focus is on the determination of the expansion of the initial state in terms of post-quench excitations. We argue that the large energy profile of the involved excitations can be relevant for the late time behaviour of the system and common regularization schemes are unreliable. We therefore proceed in determining the initial state by first principles expanding it in a systematic and controllable fashion on the basis of the asymptotic states. Our results show that, for the special limit of pre-quench parameters we consider, it assumes a squeezed state form that has been shown to evolve so as to exhibit the equilibrium behaviour predicted by the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble.

Finite temperature one-point functions in non-diagonal integrable field theories: the sine-Gordon model

We study the finite-temperature expectation values of exponential fields in the sine-Gordon model. Using finite-volume regularization, we give a low-temperature expansion of such quantities in terms of the connected diagonal matrix elements, for which we provide explicit formulas. For special values of the exponent, computations by other methods are available and used to validate our findings. Our results can also be interpreted as a further support for a previous conjecture about the connection between finite- and infinite-volume form factors valid up to terms exponentially decaying in the volume.

Asymptotic scattering and duality in the one-dimensional three-state quantum Potts model on a lattice

We determine numerically the single-particle and the two-particle spectrum of the three-state quantum Potts model on a lattice by using the density matrix renormalization group method, and extract information on the asymptotic (small momentum) S-matrix of the quasiparticles. The low energy part of the finite size spectrum can be understood in terms of a simple effective model introduced in a previous work, and is consistent with an asymptotic S-matrix of an exchange form below a momentum scale $p^*$. This scale appears to vanish faster than the Compton scale, $mc$, as one approaches the critical point, suggesting that a dangerously irrelevant operator may be responsible for the behavior observed on the lattice.

Excited state g-functions from the Truncated Conformal Space

In this paper we consider excited state g-functions, that is, overlaps between boundary states and excited states in boundary conformal field theory. We find a new method to calculate these overlaps numerically using a variation of the truncated conformal space approach. We apply this method to the Lee-Yang model for which the unique boundary perturbation is integrable and for which the TBA system describing the boundary overlaps is known. Using the truncated conformal space approach we obtain numerical results for the ground state and the first three excited states which are in excellent agreement with the TBA results. As a special case we can calculate the standard g-function which is the overlap with the ground state and find that our new method is considerably more accurate than the original method employed by Dorey et al.

Feature-Weighted Linear Stacking

Ensemble methods, such as stacking, are designed to boost predictive accuracy by blending the predictions of multiple machine learning models. Recent work has shown that the use of meta-features, additional inputs describing each example in a dataset, can boost the performance of ensemble methods, but the greatest reported gains have come from nonlinear procedures requiring significant tuning and training time. Here, we present a linear technique, Feature-Weighted Linear Stacking (FWLS), that incorporates meta-features for improved accuracy while retaining the well-known virtues of linear regression regarding speed, stability, and interpretability. FWLS combines model predictions linearly using coefficients that are themselves linear functions of meta-features. This technique was a key facet of the solution of the second place team in the recently concluded Netflix Prize competition. Significant increases in accuracy over standard linear stacking are demonstrated on the Netflix Prize collaborative filtering dataset.

NLIE for hole excited states in the sine-Gordon model with two boundaries

We derive a nonlinear integral equation (NLIE) for some bulk excited states of the sine-Gordon model on a finite interval with general integrable boundary interactions, including boundary terms proportional to the first time derivative of the field. We use this NLIE to compute numerically the dimensions of these states as a function of scale, and check the UV and IR limits analytically. We also find further support for the ground-state NLIE by comparison with boundary conformal perturbation theory (BCPT), boundary truncated conformal space approach (BTCSA) and the boundary analogue of the Luscher formula.

The R-matrix of the U_q(d_4(3)) algebra and g_2(1) affine Toda field theory

The R-matrix of the U_q(d_4(3)) algebra is constructed in the 8-dimensional fundamental representation. Using this result an exact S-matrix is conjectured for the imaginary coupled g_2(1) affine Toda field theory, the structure of which is found to be very similar to the previously investigated S-matrix of d_4(3) Toda theory. It is shown that this S-matrix is consistent with the results for the case of real coupling using the breather-particle correspondence. For q a root of unity it is argued that the theory can be restricted to yield Phi(11|12) perturbations of WA_2 minimal models.

Quantum Affine Symmetry and Scattering Amplitudes of the Imaginary Coupled d_4(3) Affine Toda Field Theory

An exact S-matrix is conjectured for the imaginary coupled d_4(3) affine Toda field theory, using the U_q(g_2(1)) symmetry. It is shown that this S-matrix is consistent with the results for the case of real coupling using the breather-particle correspondence. For q a root of unity it is argued that the theory can be restricted to yield Phi(11|14) perturbations of WA_2 minimal models and the restriction is performed for the (3,p') minimal models.

A New RSOS Restriction of the Zhiber-Mikhailov-Shabat Model and $Φ_{(1,5)}$ Perturbations of Nonunitary Minimal Models

The RSOS restriction of the Zhiber-Mikhailov-Shabat (ZMS) model is investigated. It is shown that in addition to the usual RSOS restriction, corresponding to $Φ_{(1,2)}$ and $Φ_{(2,1)}$ perturbations of minimal CFT, there is another one which yields $Φ_{(1,5)}$ perturbations of non-unitary minimal models. The new RSOS restriction is carried out and the particular case of the minimal models ${\cal M}_{(3,10)}$, ${\cal M}_{(3,14)}$ and ${\cal M}_{(3,16)}$ is discussed in detail. In the first two cases, while the mass spectra of the two RSOS restrictions are the same, the bootstrap systems and the detailed amplitudes are different. In the third case, even the spectra of the two RSOS restrictions are different. In addition, for ${\cal M}_{(3,10)}$ an interpretation in terms of the tensor product of two copies of ${\cal M}_{(2,5)}$ is given.
