Regional properties of global communication as reflected in aggregated Twitter data

Twitter is a popular public conversation platform with world-wide audience and diverse forms of connections between users. In this paper we introduce the concept of aggregated regional Twitter networks in order to characterize communication between geopolitical regions. We present the study of a follower and a mention graph created from an extensive data set collected during the second half of the year of $2012$. With a k-shell decomposition the global core-periphery structure is revealed and by means of a modified Regional-SIR model we also consider basic information spreading properties.

Quantum biology on the edge of quantum chaos

We give a new explanation for why some biological systems can stay quantum coherent for long times at room temperatures, one of the fundamental puzzles of quantum biology. We show that systems with the right level of complexity between chaos and regularity can increase their coherence time by orders of magnitude. Systems near Critical Quantum Chaos or Metal-Insulator Transition (MIT) can have long coherence times and coherent transport at the same time. The new theory tested in a realistic light harvesting system model can reproduce the scaling of critical fluctuations reported in recent experiments. Scaling of return probability in the FMO light harvesting complex shows the signs of universal return probability decay observed at critical MIT. The results may open up new possibilities to design low loss energy and information transport systems in this Poised Realm hovering reversibly between quantum coherence and classicality.

Measuring the Dynamical State of the Internet: Large Scale Network Tomography via the ETOMIC Infrastructure

In this paper we show how to go beyond the study of the topological properties of the Internet, by measuring its dynamical state using special active probing techniques and the methods of network tomography. We demonstrate this approach by measuring the key state parameters of Internet paths, the characteristics of queueing delay, in a part of the European Internet. In the paper we describe in detail the ETOMIC measurement platform that was used to conduct the experiments, and the applied method of queueing delay tomography. The main results of the paper are maps showing various spatial structure in the characteristics of queueing delay corresponding to the resolved part of the European Internet. These maps reveal that the average queueing delay of network segments spans more than two orders of magnitude, and that the distribution of this quantity is very well fitted by the log-normal distribution.

Spectral transitions in networks

We study the level spacing distribution p(s) in the spectrum of random networks. According to our numerical results, the shape of p(s) in the Erdos-Renyi (E-R) random graph is determined by the average degree , and p(s) undergoes a dramatic change when is varied around the critical point of the percolation transition, =1. When > 1, the p(s) is described by the statistics of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE), one of the major statistical ensembles in Random Matrix Theory, whereas at =1 it follows the Poisson level spacing distribution. Closely above the critical point, p(s) can be described in terms of an intermediate distribution between Poisson and the GOE, the Brody-distribution. Furthermore, below the critical point p(s) can be given with the help of the regularised Gamma-function. Motivated by these results, we analyse the behaviour of p(s) in real networks such as the Internet, a word association network and a protein protein interaction network as well. When the giant component of these networks is destroyed in a node deletion process simulating the networks subjected to intentional attack, their level spacing distribution undergoes a similar transition to that of the E-R graph.

On the Propagation of Congestion Waves in the Internet

Traffic modeling of communication networks such as Internet has become a very important field of research. A number of interesting phenomena are found in measurements and traffic simulations. One of them is the propagation of congestion waves opposite to the main packet flow direction. The purpose of this paper is to model and analyze packet congestion on a given route and to give a possible explanation to this phenomenon.

Noise corrections to stochastic trace formulas

We review studies of an evolution operator L for a discrete Langevin equation with a strongly hyperbolic classical dynamics and a Gaussian noise. The leading eigenvalue of L yields a physically measurable property of the dynamical system, the escape rate from the repeller. The spectrum of the evolution operator L in the weak noise limit can be computed in several ways. A method using a local matrix representation of the operator allows to push the corrections to the escape rate up to order eight in the noise expansion parameter. These corrections then appear to form a divergent series. Actually, via a cumulant expansion, they relate to analogous divergent series for other quantities, the traces of the evolution operators L^n. Using an integral representation of the evolution operator L, we then investigate the high order corrections to the latter traces. Their asymptotic behavior is found to be controlled by sub-dominant saddle points previously neglected in the perturbative expansion, and to be ultimately described by a kind of trace formula.

Trace formula for noise corrections to trace formulas

We consider an evolution operator for a discrete Langevin equation with a strongly hyperbolic classical dynamics and Gaussian noise. Using an integral representation of the evolution operator we investigate the high order corrections to the trace of arbitary power of the operator. The asymptotic behaviour is found to be controlled by sub-dominant saddle points previously neglected in the perturbative expansion. We show that a trace formula can be derived to describe the high order noise corrections.

Asymptotics of high order noise corrections

We consider an evolution operator for a discrete Langevin equation with a strongly hyperbolic classical dynamics and noise with finite moments. Using a perturbative expansion of the evolution operator we calculate high order corrections to its trace in the case of a quartic map and Gaussian noise. The leading contributions come from the period one orbits of the map. The asymptotic behaviour is investigated and is found to be independent up to a multiplicative constant of the distribution of noise.

Spectrum of stochastic evolution operators: Local matrix representation approach

A matrix representation of the evolution operator associated with a nonlinear stochastic flow with additive noise is used to compute its spectrum. In the weak noise limit a perturbative expansion for the spectrum is formulated in terms of local matrix representations of the evolution operator centered on classical periodic orbits. The evaluation of perturbative corrections is easier to implement in this framework than in the standard Feynman diagram perturbation theory. The result are perturbative corrections to a stochastic analog of the Gutzwiller semiclassical spectral determinant computed to several orders beyond what has so far been attainable in stochastic and quantum-mechanical applications.

Spectral correlations in systems undergoing a transition from periodicity to disorder

We study the spectral statistics for extended yet finite quasi 1-d systems which undergo a transition from periodicity to disorder. In particular we compute the spectral two-point form factor, and the resulting expression depends on the degree of disorder. It interpolates smoothly between the two extreme limits -- the approach to Poissonian statistics in the (weakly) disordered case, and the universal expressions derived for the periodic case. The theoretical results agree very well with the spectral statistics obtained numerically for chains of chaotic billiards and graphs.

Trace formulas for stochastic evolution operators: Smooth conjugation method

The trace formula for the evolution operator associated with nonlinear stochastic flows with weak additive noise is cast in the path integral formalism. We integrate over the neighborhood of a given saddlepoint exactly by means of a smooth conjugacy, a locally analytic nonlinear change of field variables. The perturbative corrections are transfered to the corresponding Jacobian, which we expand in terms of the conjugating function, rather than the action used in defining the path integral. The new perturbative expansion which follows by a recursive evaluation of derivatives appears more compact than the standard Feynman diagram perturbation theory. The result is a stochastic analog of the Gutzwiller trace formula with the ``hbar'' corrections computed an order higher than what has so far been attainable in stochastic and quantum-mechanical applications.

Trace formulas for stochastic evolution operators: Weak noise perturbation theory

Periodic orbit theory is an effective tool for the analysis of classical and quantum chaotic systems. In this paper we extend this approach to stochastic systems, in particular to mappings with additive noise. The theory is cast in the standard field theoretic formalism, and weak noise perturbation theory written in terms of Feynman diagrams. The result is a stochastic analog of the next-to-leading hbar corrections to the Gutzwiller trace formula, with long time averages calculated from periodic orbits of the deterministic system. The perturbative corrections are computed analytically and tested numerically on a simple 1-dimensional system.

Beyond the periodic orbit theory

The global constraints on chaotic dynamics induced by the analyticity of smooth flows are used to dispense with individual periodic orbits and derive infinite families of exact sum rules for several simple dynamical systems. The associated Fredholm determinants are of particularly simple polynomial form. The theory developed suggests an alternative to the conventional periodic orbit theory approach to determining eigenspectra of transfer operators.

Periodic orbit quantization of the Sinai billiard in the small scatterer limit

We consider the semiclassical quantization of the Sinai billiard for disk radii R small compared to the wave length 2 pi/k. Via the application of the periodic orbit theory of diffraction we derive the semiclassical spectral determinant. The limitations of the derived determinant are studied by comparing it to the exact KKR determinant, which we generalize here for the A_1 subspace. With the help of the Ewald resummation method developed for the full KKR determinant we transfer the complex diffractive determinant to a real form. The real zeros of the determinant are the quantum eigenvalues in semiclassical approximation. The essential parameter is the strength of the scatterer c=J_0(kR)/Y_0(kR). Surprisingly, this can take any value between plus and minus infinity within the range of validity of the diffractive approximation kR <<4. We study the statistics exhibited by spectra for fixed values of c. It is Poissonian for |c|=infinity, provided the disk is placed inside a rectangle whose sides obeys some constraints. For c=0 we find a good agreement of the level spacing distribution with GOE, whereas the form factor and two-point correlation function are similar but exhibit larger deviations. By varying the parameter c from 0 to infinity the level statistics interpolates smoothly between these limiting cases.

Quantum Fluids and Classical Determinants

A "quasiclassical" approximation to the quantum spectrum of the Schroedinger equation is obtained from the trace of a quasiclassical evolution operator for the "hydrodynamical" version of the theory, in which the dynamical evolution takes place in the extended phase space $[q(t),p(t),M(t)] = [q_i, \partial_i S, \partial_i \partial_j S ]$. The quasiclassical evolution operator is multiplicative along the classical flow, the corresponding quasiclassical zeta function is entire for nice hyperbolic flows, and its eigenvalue spectrum contains the spectrum of the semiclassical zeta function. The advantage of the quasiclassical zeta function is that it has a larger analyticity domain than the original semiclassical zeta function; the disadvantage is that it contains eigenvalues extraneous to the quantum problem. Numerical investigations indicate that the presence of these extraneous eigenvalues renders the original Gutzwiller-Voros semiclassical zeta function preferable in practice to the quasiclassical zeta function presented here. The cumulant expansion of the exact quantum mechanical scattering kernel and the cycle expansion of the corresponding semiclassical zeta function part ways at a threshold given by the topological entropy; beyond this threshold quantum mechanics cannot resolve fine details of the classical chaotic dynamics.

Application of the diffraction trace formula to the three disk scattering system

The diffraction trace formula ({\em Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 73}, 2304 (1994)) and spectral determinant are tested on the open three disk scattering system. The system contains a generic and exponentially growing number of diffraction periodic orbits. In spite of this it is shown that even the scattering resonances with large imaginary part can be reproduced semiclassicaly. The non-trivial interplay of the diffraction periodic orbits with the usual geometrical orbits produces the fine structure of the complicated spectrum of scattering resonances, which are beyond the resolution of the conventional periodic orbit theory.

Bohr-Sommerfeld Quantization of Periodic Orbits

We show, that the canonical invariant part of $\hbar$ corrections to the Gutzwiller trace formula and the Gutzwiller-Voros spectral determinant can be computed by the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rules, which usually apply for integrable systems. We argue that the information content of the classical action and stability can be used more effectively than in the usual treatment. We demonstrate the improvement of precision on the example of the three disk scattering system.

Periodic Orbit Quantization beyond Semiclassics

A quantum generalization of the semiclassical theory of Gutzwiller is given. The new formulation leads to systematic orbit-by-orbit inclusion of higher $\hbar$ contributions to the spectral determinant. We apply the theory to billiard systems, and compare the periodic orbit quantization including the first $\hbar$ contribution to the exact quantum mechanical results.
