Neural Very Weak Formulations enabling Hardware-Oriented deep PDE solvers

We show, as a proof of concept, that least-squares very weak formulations of elliptic problems can be effectively discretized by neural networks possessing low regularity, provided the test functions are drawn from appropriately smooth spaces. Apart from the immediate computational benefit of avoiding automatic differentiation, this approach, evaluated across various neural network spaces, demonstrates good performance even in challenging contexts, such as singular solutions and high dimensional settings. Particular attention is paid to trial functions based on step activations and one bit quantized linear functions, which are amenable to efficient hardware-oriented implementations.

The Fractional Korn Inequality on Uniform Domains and New Korn Inequalities for Truncated Seminorms

We prove the so-called second case of the fractional Korn inequality for uniform domains. We obtain this result as an application of a novel fractional Korn-type inequality formulated in terms of truncated seminorms, which turns out to be valid for the broader class of John domains. We also obtain weighted estimates in which the weights are certain powers of the distance to the boundary that depend on the fractional exponent and the Assouad codimension of the boundary of the domain.

A deep first-order system least squares method for the obstacle problem

We propose a deep learning approach to the obstacle problem inspired by the first-order system least-squares (FOSLS) framework. This method reformulates the problem as a convex minimization task; by simultaneously approximating the solution, gradient, and Lagrange multiplier, our approach provides a flexible, mesh-free alternative that scales efficiently to high-dimensional settings. Key theoretical contributions include the coercivity and local Lipschitz continuity of the proposed least-squares functional, along with convergence guarantees via $\Gamma$-convergence theory under mild regularity assumptions. Numerical experiments in dimensions up to 20 demonstrate the method's robustness and scalability, even on non-Lipschitz domains.

Coupling local and nonlocal equations with Neumann boundary conditions

We introduce two different ways of coupling local and nonlocal equations with Neumann boundary conditions in such a way that the resulting model is naturally associated with an energy functional. For these two models we prove that there is a minimizer of the resulting energy that is unique modulo adding a constant.

Local and nonlocal energy-based coupling models

In this paper we study two different ways of coupling a local operator with a nonlocal one in such a way that the resulting equation is related to an energy functional. In the first strategy the coupling is given via source terms in the equation and in the second one a flux condition in the local part appears. For both models we prove existence and uniqueness of a solution that is obtained via direct minimization of the related energy functional. In the second part of this paper we extend these ideas to deal with local/nonlocal elasticity models in which we couple classical local elasticity with nonlocal peridynamics.

Numerical approximations for a fully fractional Allen-Cahn equation

A finite element scheme for an entirely fractional Allen-Cahn equation with non-smooth initial data is introduced and analyzed. In the proposed nonlocal model, the Caputo fractional in-time derivative and the fractional Laplacian replace the standard local operators. Piecewise linear finite elements and convolution quadratures are the basic tools involved in the presented numerical method. Error analysis and implementation issues are addressed together with the needed results of regularity for the continuous model. Also, the asymptotic behavior of solutions, for a vanishing fractional parameter and usual derivative in time, is discussed within the framework of the Gamma-convergence theory.

Finite element approximations of the nonhomogeneous fractional Dirichlet problem

We study finite element approximations of the nonhomogeneous Dirichlet problem for the fractional Laplacian. Our approach is based on weak imposition of the Dirichlet condition and incorporating a nonlocal analogous of the normal derivative as a Lagrange multiplier in the formulation of the problem. In order to obtain convergence orders for our scheme, regularity estimates are developed, both for the solution and its nonlocal derivative. The method we propose requires that, as meshes are refined, the discrete problems be solved in a family of domains of growing diameter.

Finite element approximations for fractional evolution problems

This work introduces and analyzes a finite element scheme for evolution problems involving fractional-in-time and in-space differentiation operators up to order two. The left-sided fractional-order derivative in time we consider is employed to represent memory effects, while a nonlocal differentiation operator in space accounts for long-range dispersion processes. We discuss well-posedness and obtain regularity estimates for the evolution problems under consideration. The discrete scheme we develop is based on piecewise linear elements for the space variable and a convolution quadrature for the time component. We illustrate the method's performance with numerical experiments in one- and two-dimensional domains.

A short FE implementation for a 2d homogeneous Dirichlet problem of a Fractional Laplacian

In \cite{AcostaBorthagaray}, a complete $n$-dimensional finite element analysis of the homogeneous Dirichlet problem associated to a fractional Laplacian was presented. Here we provide a comprehensive and simple 2D {\it MATLAB}\textsuperscript{\textregistered} finite element code for such a problem. The code is accompanied with a basic discussion of the theory relevant in the context. The main program is written in about 80 lines and can be easily modified to deal with other kernels as well as with time dependent problems. The present work fills a gap by providing an input for a large number of mathematicians and scientists interested in numerical approximations of solutions of a large variety of problems involving nonlocal phenomena in two-dimensional space.

Regularity theory and high order numerical methods for the (1d)-Fractional Laplacian

This paper presents regularity results and associated high-order numerical methods for one-dimensional Fractional-Laplacian boundary-value problems. On the basis of a factorization of solutions as a product of a certain edge-singular weight $\omega$ times a "regular" unknown, a characterization of the regularity of solutions is obtained in terms of the smoothness of the corresponding right-hand sides. In particular, for right-hand sides which are analytic in a Bernstein Ellipse, analyticity in the same Bernstein Ellipse is obtained for the "regular" unknown. Moreover, a sharp Sobolev regularity result is presented which completely characterizes the co-domain of the Fractional-Laplacian operator in terms of certain weighted Sobolev spaces introduced in (Babu\v{s}ka and Guo, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 2002). The present theoretical treatment relies on a full eigendecomposition for a certain weighted integral operator in terms of the Gegenbauer polynomial basis. The proposed Gegenbauer-based Nystr\"om numerical method for the Fractional-Laplacian Dirichlet problem, further, is significantly more accurate and efficient than other algorithms considered previously. The sharp error estimates presented in this paper indicate that the proposed algorithm is spectrally accurate, with convergence rates that only depend on the smoothness of the right-hand side. In particular, convergence is exponentially fast (resp. faster than any power of the mesh-size) for analytic (resp. in nitely smooth) right-hand sides. The properties of the algorithm are illustrated with a variety of numerical results.

A fractional Laplace equation: regularity of solutions and Finite Element approximations

This paper deals with the \emph{integral} version of the Dirichlet homogeneous fractional Laplace equation. For this problem weighted and fractional Sobolev a priori estimates are provided in terms of the H\"older regularity of the data. By relying on these results, optimal order of convergence for the standard linear finite element method is proved for quasi-uniform as well as graded meshes. Some numerical examples are given showing results in agreement with the theoretical predictions.

The Full Strategy Minority Game

The Full Strategy Minority Game (FSMG) is an instance of the Minority Game (MG) which includes a single copy of every potential agent. In this work, we explicitly solve the FSMG thanks to certain symmetries of this game. Furthermore, by considering the MG as a statistical sample of the FSMG, we compute approximated values of the key variable σ2/N in the symmetric phase for different versions of the MG. As another application we prove that our results can be easily modified in order to handle certain kind of initial biased strategies scores, in particular when the bias is introduced at the agents' level. We also show that the FSMG verifies a strict period two dynamics (i.e., period two dynamics satisfied with probability 1) giving, to the best of our knowledge, the first example of an instance of the MG for which this feature can be analytically proved. Thanks to this property, it is possible to compute in a simple way the probability that a general instance of the MG breaks the period two dynamics for the first time in a given simulation.

Condition numbers and scale free graphs

In this work we study the condition number of the least square matrix corresponding to scale free networks. We compute a theoretical lower bound of the condition number which proves that they are ill conditioned. Also, we analyze several matrices from networks generated with the linear preferential attachment model showing that it is very difficult to compute the power law exponent by the least square method due to the severe lost of accuracy expected from the corresponding condition numbers.
