Large Charge Sector of 3d Parity-Violating CFTs

Certain CFTs with a global $U(1)$ symmetry become superfluids when coupled to a chemical potential. When this happens, a Goldstone effective field theory controls the spectrum and correlators of the lightest large charge operators. We show that in 3d, this EFT contains a single parity-violating 1-derivative term with quantized coefficient. This term forces the superfluid ground state to have vortices on the sphere, leading to a spectrum of large charge operators that is remarkably richer than in parity-invariant CFTs. We test our predictions in a weakly coupled Chern-Simons matter theory.

The OPE meets semiclassics

We show that the correlator of three large charge operators with minimal scaling dimension can be computed semiclassically in CFTs with a $U(1)$ symmetry for arbitrary fixed values of the ratios of their charges. We obtain explicitly the OPE coefficient from the numerical solution of a nonlinear boundary value problem in the conformal superfluid EFT in $3d$. The result applies in all three-dimensional CFTs with a $U(1)$ symmetry whose large charge sector is a superfluid.

Gapped Goldstones at the cut-off scale: a non-relativistic EFT

At finite density, the spontaneous breakdown of an internal non-Abelian symmetry dictates, along with gapless modes, modes whose gap is fixed by the algebra and proportional to the chemical potential: the gapped Goldstones. Generically the gap of these states is comparable to that of other non-universal excitations or to the energy scale where the dynamics is strongly coupled. This makes it non-straightforward to derive a universal ef effective field theory (EFT) description realizing all the symmetries. Focusing on the illustrative example of a fully broken SU (2) group, we demonstrate that such an EFT can be constructed by carving out around the Goldstones, gapless and gapped, at small 3-momentum. The rules governing the EFT, where the gapless Goldstones are soft while the gapped ones are slow, are those of standard nonrelativistic EFTs, like for instance nonrelativistic QED. In particular, the EFT Lagrangian formally preserves gapped Goldstone number, and processes where such number is not conserved are described inclusively by allowing for imaginary parts in the Wilson coefficients. Thus, while the symmetry is manifestly realized in the EFT, unitarity is not. We comment on the application of our construction to the study of the large charge sector of conformal field theories with non-Abelian symmetries.

A note on the large charge expansion in 4d CFT

In this letter, we discuss certain universal predictions of the large charge expansion in conformal field theories with $U(1)$ symmetry, mainly focusing on four-dimensional theories. We show that, while in three dimensions quantum fluctuations are responsible for the existence of a theory-independent $Q^0$ term in the scaling dimension $Δ_Q$ of the lightest operator with fixed charge $Q\gg 1$, in four dimensions the same mechanism provides a universal $Q^0\log Q$ correction to $Δ_Q$. Previous works discussing four-dimensional theories failed in identifying this term. We also compute the first subleading correction to the OPE coefficient corresponding to the insertion of an arbitrary primary operator with small charge $q\ll Q$ in between the minimal energy states with charge $Q$ and $Q+q$, both in three and four dimensions. This contribution does not depend on the operator insertion and, similarly to the quantum effects in $Δ_Q$, in four dimensions it scales logarithmically with $Q$.

Goldstone Equivalence and High Energy Electroweak Physics

The transition between the broken and unbroken phases of massive gauge theories, namely the rearrangement of longitudinal and Goldstone degrees of freedom that occurs at high energy, is not manifestly smooth in the standard formalism. The lack of smoothness concretely shows up as an anomalous growth with energy of the longitudinal polarization vectors, as they emerge in Feynman rules both for real on-shell external particles and for virtual particles from the decomposition of the gauge field propagator. This makes the characterization of Feynman amplitudes in the high-energy limit quite cumbersome, which in turn poses peculiar challenges in the study of Electroweak processes at energies much above the Electroweak scale. We develop a Lorentz-covariant formalism where polarization vectors are well-behaved and, consequently, energy power-counting is manifest at the level of individual Feynman diagrams. This allows us to prove the validity of the Effective W Approximation and, more generally, the factorization of collinear emissions and to compute the corresponding splitting functions at the tree-level order. Our formalism applies at all orders in perturbation theory, for arbitrary gauge groups and generic linear gauge-fixing functionals. It can be used to simplify Standard Model loop calculations by performing the high-energy expansion directly on the Feynman diagrams. This is illustrated by computing the radiative corrections to the decay of the top quark.

Superfluids, vortices and spinning charged operators in 4d CFT

We include vortices in the superfluid EFT for four dimensional CFTs at large global charge. Using the state-operator correspondence, vortices are mapped to charged operators with large spin and we compute their scaling dimensions. Different regimes are identified: phonons, vortex rings, Kelvin waves, and vortex crystals. We also compute correlators with a Noether current insertion in between vortex states. Results for the scaling dimensions of traceless symmetric operators are given in arbitrary spacetime dimensions.

Feynman diagrams and the large charge expansion in $3-\varepsilon$ dimensions

In arXiv:1909.01269 it was shown that the scaling dimension of the lightest charge $n$ operator in the $U(1)$ model at the Wilson-Fisher fixed point in $d=4-\varepsilon$ can be computed semiclassically for arbitrary values of $λn$, where $λ$ is the perturbatively small fixed point coupling. Here we generalize this result to the fixed point of the $U(1)$ model in $3-\varepsilon$ dimensions. The result interpolates continuously between diagrammatic calculations and the universal conformal superfluid regime for CFTs at large charge. In particular it reproduces the expectedly universal $O(n^0)$ contribution to the scaling dimension of large charge operators in $3d$ CFTs.

The Epsilon Expansion Meets Semiclassics

We study the scaling dimension $Δ_{ϕ^n}$ of the operator $ϕ^n$ where $ϕ$ is the fundamental complex field of the $U(1)$ model at the Wilson-Fisher fixed point in $d=4-\varepsilon$. Even for a perturbatively small fixed point coupling $λ_*$, standard perturbation theory breaks down for sufficiently large $λ_*n$. Treating $λ_* n$ as fixed for small $λ_*$ we show that $Δ_{ϕ^n}$ can be successfully computed through a semiclassical expansion around a non-trivial trajectory, resulting in $$ Δ_{ϕ^n}=\frac{1}{λ_*}Δ_{-1}(λ_* n)+Δ_{0}(λ_* n)+λ_* Δ_{1}(λ_* n)+\ldots $$ We explicitly compute the first two orders in the expansion, $Δ_{-1}(λ_* n)$ and $Δ_{0}(λ_* n)$. The result, when expanded at small $λ_* n$, perfectly agrees with all available diagrammatic computations. The asymptotic at large $λ_* n$ reproduces instead the systematic large charge expansion, recently derived in CFT. Comparison with Monte Carlo simulations in $d=3$ is compatible with the obvious limitations of taking $\varepsilon=1$, but encouraging.

Rotating superfluids and spinning charged operators in conformal field theory

We calculate the scaling dimensions of operators with large global charge and spin in 2+1 dimensional conformal field theories. By the state-operator correspondence, these operators correspond to superfluids with vortices and can be systematically studied using effective field theory. As the spin increases from zero to the unitarity bound, the superfluid state corresponding to the lowest dimension operator passes through three distinct regimes: (1) a single phonon, (2) two vortices, and (3) multiple vortices. We also calculate correlation functions with two such operators and the Noether current.
