Birkhoff Spectra of symbolic almost one-to-one extensions

Given a continuous self-map $f$ on some compact metrisable space $X$, it is natural to ask for the visiting frequencies of points $x\in X$ to sufficiently ``nice'' sets $C\subseteq X$ under iteration of $f$. For example, if $f$ is an irrational rotation on the circle, it is well-known that the Birkhoff average $\lim_{n\to\infty}1/n\cdot \sum_{i=0}^{n-1}\mathbf 1_C(f^i(x))$ exists and equals $\textrm{Leb}_{\mathbb T^1}(C)$ for all $x$ whenever $C$ is measurable with boundary $\partial C$ of zero Lebesgue measure. If, however, $\partial C$ is fat (of positive measure), the respective averages can generally only be evaluated almost everywhere or on residual sets. In fact, there does not appear to be a single example of a fat Cantor set $C$ whose Birkhoff spectrum -- the full set of visiting frequencies -- is known. In this article, we develop an approach to analyse the Birkhoff spectra of a natural class of dynamically defined fat nowhere dense compact subsets of Cantor minimal systems. We show that every Cantor minimal system admits such sets whose Birkhoff spectrum is a full non-degenerate interval -- and also such sets for which the spectrum is not an interval. As an application, we obtain that every irrational rotation admits fat Cantor sets $C$ and $C'$ whose Birkhoff spectra are, respectively, an interval and not an interval.

Idempotents in the Ellis semigroup of Floyd-Auslander systems

We study minimal idempotents $J^{\mathrm{min}}(X)$ in the Ellis semigroup $E(X)$ associated with a Floyd-Auslander system $(X,T)$. We show that $(X,T)$ is non-tame if and only if $|J^{\mathrm{min}}(X)| > 2^{\aleph_0}$, which happens exactly when the factor map onto the maximal equicontinuous factor possesses uncountably many non-invertible fibres. This yields an easy-to-check criterion for distinguishing tame from non-tame Floyd-Auslander systems and, more importantly, provides an entire family of regular almost automorphic systems with $|J^{\mathrm{min}}(X)| > 2^{\aleph_0}$. Notably, all previously known regular almost automorphic non-tame systems exhibited only a small (i.e. $\leq 2^{\aleph_0}$) set of minimal idempotents. We obtain our result by leveraging an alternative characterisation of (non)-tameness through, what we call, choice domains.

On the continuity of F{\o}lner averages

It is known that if each point $x$ of a dynamical system is generic for some invariant measure $\mu_x$, then there is a strong connection between certain ergodic and topological properties of that system. In particular, if the acting group is abelian and the map $x\mapsto \mu_x$ is continuous, then every orbit closure is uniquely ergodic. In this note, we show that if the acting group is not abelian, orbit closures may well support more than one ergodic measure even if $x\mapsto \mu_x$ is continuous. We provide examples of such a situation via actions of the group of all orientation-preserving homeomorphisms on the unit interval as well as the Lamplighter group. To discuss these examples, we need to extend the existing theory of weakly mean equicontinuous group actions to allow for multiple ergodic measures on orbit closures and to allow for actions of general amenable groups. These extensions are achieved by adopting an operator-theoretic approach.

Amorphic complexity of group actions with applications to quasicrystals

In this article, we define amorphic complexity for actions of locally compact $σ$-compact amenable groups on compact metric spaces. Amorphic complexity, originally introduced for $\mathbb Z$-actions, is a topological invariant which measures the complexity of dynamical systems in the regime of zero entropy. We show that it is tailor-made to study strictly ergodic group actions with discrete spectrum and continuous eigenfunctions. This class of actions includes, in particular, Delone dynamical systems related to regular model sets obtained via Meyer's cut and project method. We provide sharp upper bounds on amorphic complexity of such systems. In doing so, we observe an intimate relationship between amorphic complexity and fractal geometry.

On the probability of positive finite-time Lyapunov exponents on strange non-chaotic attractors

We study strange non-chaotic attractors in a class of quasiperiodically forced monotone interval maps known as pinched skew products. We prove that the probability of positive time-N Lyapunov exponents, with respect to the unique physical measure on the attractor, decays exponentially as N goes to infinity. The motivation for this work comes from the study of finite-time Lyapunov exponents as possible early-warning signals of critical transitions in the context of forced dynamics.

Tame or wild Toeplitz shifts

We investigate tameness of Toeplitz shifts. By introducing the notion of extended Bratteli-Vershik diagrams, we show that such shifts with finite Toeplitz rank are tame if and only if there are at most countably many orbits of singular fibres over the maximal equicontinuous factor. The ideas are illustrated using the class of substitution subshifts. A body of elaborate examples shows that the assumptions of our results cannot be relaxed.

On the effect of forcing of fold bifurcations and early-warning signals in population dynamics

The classical fold bifurcation is a paradigmatic example of a critical transition. It has been used in a variety of contexts, including in particular ecology and climate science, to motivate the role of slow recovery rates and increased autocorrelations as early-warning signals of such transitions. We study the influence of external forcing on fold bifurcations and the respective early-warning signals. Thereby, our prime examples are single-species population dynamical models with Allee effect under the influence of either quasiperiodic forcing or bounded random noise. We show that the presence of these external factors may lead to so-called non-smooth fold bifurcations, and thereby has a significant impact on the behaviour of the Lyapunov exponents (and hence the recovery rates). In particular, it may lead to the absence of critical slowing down prior to population collapse. More precisely, unlike in the unforced case, the question whether slow recovery rates can be observed or detected prior to the transition crucially depends on the chosen time-scales and the size of the considered data set.

The structure of mean equicontinuous group actions

We study mean equicontinuous actions of locally compact $σ$-compact amenable groups on compact metric spaces. In this setting, we establish the equivalence of mean equicontinuity and topo-isomorphy to the maximal equicontinuous factor and provide a characterization of mean equicontinuity of an action via properties of its product. This characterization enables us to show the equivalence of mean equicontinuity and the weaker notion of Besicovitch-mean equicontinuity in fairly high generality, including actions of abelian groups as well as minimal actions of general groups. In the minimal case, we further conclude that mean equicontinuity is equivalent to discrete spectrum with continuous eigenfunctions. Applications of our results yield a new class of non-abelian mean equicontinuous examples as well as a characterization of those extensions of mean equicontinuous actions which are still mean equicontinuous.

On tameness of almost automorphic dynamical systems for general groups

Let $(X,G)$ be a minimal equicontinuous dynamical system, where $X$ is a compact metric space and $G$ some topological group acting on $X$. Under very mild assumptions, we show that the class of regular almost automorphic extensions of $(X,G)$ contains examples of tame but non-null systems as well as non-tame ones. To do that, we first study the representation of almost automorphic systems by means of semicocycles for general groups. Based on this representation, we obtain examples of the above kind in well-studied families of group actions. These include Toeplitz flows over $G$-odometers where $G$ is countable and residually finite as well as symbolic extensions of irrational rotations.

The bifurcation set as a topological invariant for one-dimensional dynamics

For a continuous map on the unit interval or circle, we define the bifurcation set to be the collection of those interval holes whose surviving set is sensitive to arbitrarily small changes of their position. By assuming a global perspective and focusing on the geometric and topological properties of this collection rather than the surviving sets of individual holes, we obtain a novel topological invariant for one-dimensional dynamics. We provide a detailed description of this invariant in the realm of transitive maps and observe that it carries fundamental dynamical information. In particular, for transitive non-minimal piecewise monotone maps, the bifurcation set encodes the topological entropy and strongly depends on the behavior of the critical points.

Constant length substitutions, iterated function systems and amorphic complexity

We show how geometric methods from the general theory of fractal dimensions and iterated function systems can be deployed to study symbolic dynamics in the zero entropy regime. More precisely, we establish a dimensional characterization of the topological notion of amorphic complexity. For subshifts with discrete spectrum associated to constant length substitutions, this characterization allows us to derive bounds for the amorphic complexity by interpreting the subshift as the attractor of an iterated function system in a suitable quotient space. As a result, we obtain the general finiteness and positivity of amorphic complexity in this setting and provide a closed formula in case of a binary alphabet.

Irregular model sets and tame dynamics

We study the dynamical properties of irregular model sets and show that the translation action on their hull always admits an infinite independence set. The dynamics can therefore not be tame and the topological sequence entropy is strictly positive. Extending the proof to a more general setting, we further obtain that tame implies regular for almost automorphic group actions on compact spaces. In the converse direction, we show that even in the restrictive case of Euclidean cut and project schemes irregular model sets may be uniquely ergodic and have zero topological entropy. This provides negative answers to questions by Schlottmann and Moody in the Euclidean setting.

Rectifiability of a class of invariant measures with one non-vanishing Lyapunov exponent

We study order-preserving C^1-circle diffeomorphisms driven by irrational rotations with a Diophantine rotation number. We show that there is a non-empty open set of one-parameter families of such diffeomorphisms where the ergodic measures of nearly all family members are one-rectifiable, that is, absolutely continuous with respect to the restriction of the one-dimensional Hausdorff measure to a countable union of Lipschitz graphs.

Non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations III: strange attractors in continuous time

Non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations give rise to minimal sets of interesting geometry built of so-called strange non-chaotic attractors. We show that certain families of quasiperiodically driven logistic differential equations undergo a non-smooth bifurcation. By a previous result on the occurrence of non-smooth bifurcations in forced discrete time dynamical systems, this yields that within the class of families of quasiperiodically driven differential equations, non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations occur in a set with non-empty C2-interior.

Non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations II: dimensions of strange attractors

We study the geometric and topological properties of strange non-chaotic attractors created in non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations of quasiperiodically forced interval maps. By interpreting the attractors as limit objects of the iterates of a continuous curve and controlling the geometry of the latter, we determine their Hausdorff and box-counting dimension and show that these take distinct values. Moreover, the same approach allows to describe the topological structure of the attractors and to prove their minimality.

Non-Smooth Saddle-Node Bifurcations of Forced Monotone Interval Maps I: Existence of an SNA

We study one-parameter families of quasi-periodically forced monotone interval maps and provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a parameter at which the respective system possesses a non-uniformly hyperbolic attractor. This is equivalent to the existence of a sink-source orbit, that is, an orbit with positive Lyapunov exponent both forwards and backwards in time. The attractor itself is a non-continuous invariant graph with negative Lyapunov exponent, often referred to as "SNA". In contrast to former results in this direction, our conditions are C^2-open in the fibre maps. By applying a general result about saddle-node bifurcations in skew products, we obtain a conclusion on the occurrence of non-smooth bifurcations in the respective families. Explicit examples show the applicability of the derived statements.
