The ocean worlds science case for the Pollux spectropolarimeter

Pollux is a candidate European instrument contribution to the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), designed to advance our understanding of the formation and evolution of cosmic structures in the universe, and specifically search signs of life on extrasolar planets. This high-resolution spectrograph (R\,$>$\,40,000) with polarimetric capabilities offers nearly continuous and simultaneous coverage from the FUV ($\sim$100\,nm) to the NIR ($\sim$1.9\,$\micron$), making it a versatile tool for a wide range of scientific investigations from solar system studies to cosmology. Several Solar System ocean worlds have been the focal point of the scientific community to understand the conditions of their internal saline oceans, as well as the possible emergence of life beyond Earth. The ocean world science case will leverage Pollux's UV spectropolarimetric capabilities to investigate surface reflectance and composition, characterize airglow emissions in the environments of giant-planet moons, as well as constrain the microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosols.

Development of a Precise Polarization Modulator for UV Spectropolarimetry

We developed a polarization modulation unit (PMU) to rotate a waveplate continuously in order to observe solar magnetic fields by spectropolarimetry. The non-uniformity of the PMU rotation may cause errors in the measurement of the degree of linear polarization (scale error) and its angle (crosstalk between Stokes-Q and -U), although it does not cause an artificial linear polarization signal (spurious polarization). We rotated a waveplate with the PMU to obtain a polarization modulation curve and estimated the scale error and crosstalk caused by the rotation non-uniformity. The estimated scale error and crosstalk were <0.01 % for both. This PMU will be used as a waveplate motor for the Chromospheric Lyman-Alpha SpectroPolarimeter (CLASP) rocket experiment. We confirmed that the PMU has the sufficient performance and function for CLASP.

The charged dust solution of Ruban -- matching to Reissner--Nordström and shell crossings

The maximally extended Reissner--Nordström (RN) manifold with $e^2 < m^2$ begs for attaching a material source to it that would preserve the infinite chain of asymptotically flat regions and evolve through the wormhole between the RN singularities. So far, the attempts were discouraging. Here we try one more possible source -- a solution found by Ruban in 1972 that is a charged generalisation of an inhomogeneous Kantowski--Sachs-type dust solution. It can be matched to the RN solution, and the matching surface must stay all the time between the two RN event horizons. However, shell crossings do not allow even half a cycle of oscillation between the maximal and the minimal size.
