The group of L^2 isometries on H^1_0

Let U be an open subset of R^n. Let L^2=L^2(U,dx) and H^1_0=H^1_0(U) be the standard Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces of complex-valued functions. The aim of this paper is to study the group G of invertible operators on H^1_0 which preserve the L^2-inner product. When U is bounded and the border $\partial U$ is smooth, this group acts as the intertwiner of the H^1_0 solutions of the non-homogeneous Helmholtz equation $u-Δu=f$, $u|_{\partial U}=0$. We show that G is a real Banach-Lie group, whose Lie algebra is (i times) the space of symmetrizable operators. We discuss the spectrum of operators belonging to G by means of examples. In particular, we give an example of an operator in G whose spectrum is not contained in the unit circle. We also study the one parameter subgroups of G. Curves of minimal length in G are considered. We introduce the subgroups G_p:=G \cap (I - B_p(H^1_0)), where B_p(H_0^1) is a Schatten ideal of operators on H_0^1. An invariant (weak) Finsler metric is defined by the p-norm of the Schatten ideal of operators of L^2. We prove that any pair of operators g_1,g_2 in G_p can be joined by a minimal curve of the form $a(t)=g_1 e^{itX}$, where X is a symmetrizable operator in B_p(H^1_0).

The left invariant metric in the general linear group

Left invariant metrics induced by the p-norms of the trace in the matrix algebra are studied on the general lineal group. By means of the Euler-Lagrange equations, existence and uniqueness of extremal paths for the length functional are established, and regularity properties of these extremal paths are obtained. Minimizing paths in the group are shown to have a velocity with constant singular values and multiplicity. In several special cases, these geodesic paths are computed explicitly. In particular the Riemannian geodesics, corresponding to the case p=2, are characterized as the product of two one-parameter groups. It is also shown that geodesics are one-parameter groups if and only if the initial velocity is a normal matrix. These results are further extended to the context of compact operators with p-summable spectrum, where a differential equation for the spectral projections of the velocity vector of an extremal path is obtained.

Short paths for symmetric norms in the unitary group

For a given symmetrically normed ideal I on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space H, we study the rectifiable distance in the classical Banach-Lie unitary group $$ U_I={u is a unitary operator in H, u-1\in I}. $$ We prove that one-parameter subgroups of U_I are short paths, provided the spectrum of the exponent is bounded by $π$, and that any two elements of U_I can be joined with a short path, thus obtaining a Hopf-Rinow theorem in this infinite dimensional setting, for a wide and relevant class of (non necessarily smooth) metrics. Then we prove that the one-parameter groups are the unique short paths joining given endpoints, provided the symmetric norm considered is strictly convex.

Optimal paths for symmetric actions in the unitary group

Given a positive and unitarily invariant Lagrangian L defined in the algebra of Hermitian matrices, and a fixed interval $[a,b]\subset\mathbb R$, we study the action defined in the Lie group of $n\times n$ unitary matrices $\mathcal{U}(n)$ by $$ S(α)=\int_a^b L(\dotα(t))\,dt\,, $$ where $α:[a,b]\to\mathcal{U}(n)$ is a rectifiable curve. We prove that the one-parameter subgroups of $\mathcal{U}(n)$ are the optimal paths, provided the spectrum of the exponent is bounded by $π$. Moreover, if L is strictly convex, we prove that one-parameter subgroups are the unique optimal curves joining given endpoints. Finally, we also study the connection of these results with unitarily invariant metrics in $\mathcal{U}(n)$ as well as angular metrics in the Grassmann manifold

Thompson-type formulae

Let X and Y be two nxn Hermitian matrices. In the article "Proof of a conjectured exponential formula" (Linear and Multilinear Algebra (19) 1986, 187-197) R. C. Thompson proved that there exist two nxn unitary matrices U and V such that $$ e^{i X}e^{i Y}=e^{i (UXU^*+VBV^*)}. $$ In this note we consider extensions of this result to compact operators as well as to operators in an embeddable II$_1$ factor.

A characterization of Hermitian matrices with variable diagonal and smallest operator norm

We describe properties of a Hermitian square matrix M in M_n(C) equivalent to that of having minimal quotient norm in the following sense: ||M|| <= ||M+D|| for all real diagonal matrices D in M_n(C) and || || the operator norm. These matrices are related to some particular positive matrices with their range included in the eigenspaces of the eigenvalues +||M|| and -||M|| of M. We show how a constructive method can be used to obtain minimal matrices of any dimension relating this problem with majorization results in R^n.

Smooth paths of conditional expectations

Let A be a von Neumann algebra with a finite trace $τ$, represented in $H=L^2(A,τ)$, and let $B_t\subset A$ be sub-algebras, for $t$ in an interval $I$. Let $E_t:A\to B_t$ be the unique $τ$-preserving conditional expectation. We say that the path $t\mapsto E_t$ is smooth if for every $a\in A$ and $v \in H$, the map $$ I\ni t\mapsto E_t(a)v\in H $$ is continuously differentiable. This condition implies the existence of the derivative operator $$ dE_t(a):H\to H, \ dE_t(a)v=\frac{d}{dt}E_t(a)v. $$ If this operator verifies the additional boundedness condition, $$ \int_J \|dE_t(a)\|_2^2 d t\le C_J\|a\|_2^2, $$ for any closed bounded sub-interval $J\subset I$, and $C_J>0$ a constant depending only on $J$, then the algebras $B_t$ are *-isomorphic. More precisely, there exists a curve $G_t:A\to A$, $t\in I$ of unital, *-preserving linear isomorphisms which intertwine the expectations, $$ G_t\circ E_0=E_t\circ G_t. $$ The curve $G_t$ is weakly continuously differentiable. Moreover, the intertwining property in particular implies that $G_t$ maps $B_0$ onto $B_t$. We show that this restriction is a multiplicative isomorphism.

Spaces of nonpositive curvature arising from a finite algebra

In this paper we introduce a family of examples that can be regarded as spaces of nonpositive curvature, but with the distinct quality that they are not complete as metric spaces. This amounts to the fact that they are modelled on a finite von Neumann algebra, and the metrics introduced arise from the trace of the algebra. In spite of the noncompleteness of these manifolds, their geometry can be studied from the view-point of metric geometry, and several techniques derived from the functional analysis are applied to gain insight on their geodesic structure.

Homogeneous manifolds from noncommutative measure spaces

Let M be a finite von Neumann algebra with a faithful trace $τ$. In this paper we study metric geometry of homogeneous spaces O of the unitary group U of M, endowed with a Finsler quotient metric induced by the p-norms of $τ$, $||x||_p=τ(|x|^p)^{1/p}$, $p\ge 1$. The main results include the following. The unitary group carries on a rectifiable distance d_p induced by measuring the length of curves with the p-norm. If we identify O as a quotient of groups, then there is a natural quotient distance d'_p that metrizes the quotient topology. On the other hand, the Finsler quotient metric defined in O provides a way to measure curves, and therefore, there is an associated rectifiable distance d_{O,p}. For $p\ge 2$, we prove that the distances d'_p and d_{O,p} coincide. Based on this fact, we show that the metric space (O,d'_p) is a complete path metric space. The other problem treated in this article is the existence of metric geodesics, or curves of minimal length, in O. We give two abstract partial results in this direction. The first concerns the initial values problem and the second the fixed endpoints problem. We show how these results apply to several examples. In the process, we improve some results about the metric geometry of U with the p-norm.

The rectifiable distance in the unitary Fredholm group

Let $U_c(H)={u: u is unitary and u-1 is compact}$ stand for the unitary Fredholm group. We prove the following convexity result. Denote by $d_\infty$ the rectifiable distance induced by the Finsler metric given by the operator norm in $U_c(H)$. If $u_0,u_1,u\in U_c(H)$ and the geodesic $β$ joining $u_0$ and $u_1$ in $U_c(H)$ verifies $d_\infty(u,β)<π/2$, then the map $f(s)=d_\infty(u,β(s))$ is convex for $s\in[0,1]$. In particular the convexity radius of the geodesic balls in $U_c(H)$ is $π/4$. The same convexity property holds in the $p$-Schatten unitary groups $U_p(H)={u: u is unitary and u-1 is in the p-Schatten class}$, for $p$ an even integer, $p\ge 4$ (in this case, the distance is strictly convex). The same results hold in the unitary group of a $C^*$-algebra with a faithful finite trace. We apply this convexity result to establish the existence of curves of minimal length with given initial conditions, in the unitary orbit of an operator, under the action of the Fredholm group. We characterize self-adjoint operators $A$ such that this orbit is a submanifold (of the affine space $A+K(H)$, where $K(H)$=compact operators).

Manifolds of semi-negative curvature

The notion of nonpositive curvature in Alexandrov's sense is extended to include p-uniformly convex Banach spaces. Infinite dimensional manifolds of semi-negative curvature with a p-uniformly convex tangent norm fall in this class on nonpositively curved spaces, and several well-known results, such as existence and uniqueness of best approximations from convex closed sets, or the Bruhat-Tits fixed point theorem, are shown to hold in this setting, without dimension restrictions. Homogeneous spaces G/K of Banach-Lie groups of semi-negative curvature are also studied, explicit estimates on the geodesic distance and sectional curvature are obtained. A characterization of convex homogeneous submanifolds is given in terms of the Banach-Lie algebras. A splitting theorem via convex expansive submanifolds is proven, inducing the corresponding splitting of the Banach-Lie group G. Finally, these notions are used to study the structure of the classical Banach-Lie groups of bounded linear operators acting on a Hilbert space, and the splittings induced by conditional expectations in such setting.

A Geometrical Approach to Hilbert-Schmidt Operators

We give a Riemannian structure to the set $Σ$ of positive invertible unitized Hilbert-Schmidt operators, by means of the trace inner product. This metric makes of $Σ$ a nonpositively curved, simply connected and metrically complete Hilbert manifold. The manifold $Σ$ is a universal model for symmetric spaces of the noncompact type: any such space can be isometrically embedded into $Σ$. We give an intrinsic algebraic characterization of convex closed submanifolds $M$. We study the group of isometries of such submanifolds: we prove that $G_M$, the Banach-Lie group generated by $M$, acts isometrically and transitively on $M$. Moreover, $G_M$ admits a polar decomposition relative to $M$, namely $G_M\simeq M\times K$ as Hilbert manifolds (here $K$ is the isotropy of $p=1$ for the action $I_g: p\mapsto gpg^*$), and also $G_M/K\simeq M$ so $M$ is an homogeneous space. We obtain several decomposition theorems by means of geodesically convex submanifolds $M$. These decompositions are obtained \textit{via} a nonlinear but analytic orthogonal projection $Π_M:Σ\to M$, a map which is a contraction for the geodesic distance. As a byproduct, we prove the isomorphism $NM\simeqΣ$ (here $NM$ stands for the normal bundle of a convex closed submanifold $M$). Writing down the factorizations for fixed ${\rm e}^a$, we obtain ${\rm e}^a={\rm e}^x{\rm e}^v{\rm e}^x$ with ${\rm e}^x\in M$ and $v$ orthogonal to $M$ at $p=1$. As a corollary we obtain decompositions for the full group of invertible elements $G\simeq M\times \exp(T_1M^{\perp})\times K$.

Hopf-Rinow Theorem in the Sato Grassmannian

Let $U_2({\cal H})$ be the Banach-Lie group of unitary operators in the Hilbert space ${\cal H}$ which are Hilbert-Schmidt perturbations of the identity 1. In this paper we study the geometry of the unitary orbit $$\{upu^*: u\in U_2({\cal H})\},$$ of an infinite projection $p$ in ${\cal H}$. This orbit coincides with the connected component of $p$ in the Hilbert-Schmidt restricted Grassmannian $Gr_{res}(p)$ (also known in the literature as the Sato Grassmannian) corresponding to the polarization ${\cal H}=p({\cal H})\oplus p({\cal H})^\perp$. It is known that the components of $Gr_{res}(p)$ are differentiable manifolds. Here we give a simple proof of the fact that $Gr_{res}^0(p)$ is a smooth submanifold of the affine Hilbert space $p+{\cal B}_2({\cal H})$, where ${\cal B}_2({\cal H})$ denotes the space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators of ${\cal H}$. We prove that the geodesics of the natural connection, which are of the form $γ(t)=e^{tz}pe^{-tz}$, for $z$ a $p$-codiagonal anti-hermitic element of ${\cal B}_2({\cal H})$, have minimal length provided that $\|z\|\le π/2$. Note that the condition is given in terms of the usual operator norm, a fact which implies that there exist minimal geodesics of arbitrary length. Also we show that any two points $p_1,p_2\in Gr_{res}^0(p)$ are joined by a minimal geodesic. If moreover $\|p_1-p_2\|<1$, the minimal geodesic is unique. Finally, we replace the 2-norm by the $k$-Schatten norm ($k>2$), and prove that the geodesics are also minimal for these norms, up to a critical value of $t$, which is estimated also in terms of the usual operator norm. In the process, minimality results in the $k$-norms are also obtained for the group $U_2({\cal H})$.

Weak Riemannian manifolds from finite index subfactors

Let $N\subset M$ be a finite Jones' index inclusion of II$_1$ factors, and denote by $U_N\subset U_M$ their unitary groups. In this paper we study the homogeneous space $U_M/U_N$, which is a (infinite dimensional) differentiable manifold, diffeomorphic to the orbit $$ {\cal O}(p) =\{u p u^*: u\in U_M\} $$ of the Jones projection $p$ of the inclusion. We endow ${\cal O}(p) $ with a Riemannian metric, by means of the trace on each tangent space. These are pre-Hilbert spaces (the tangent spaces are not complete), therefore ${\cal O}(p)$ is a weak Riemannian manifold. We show that ${\cal O}(p)$ enjoys certain properties similar to classic Hilbert-Riemann manifolds. Among them, metric completeness of the geodesic distance, uniqueness of geodesics of the Levi-Civita connection as minimal curves, and partial results on the existence of minimal geodesics. For instance, around each point $p_1$ of ${\cal O}(p)$, there is a ball $\{q\in {\cal O}(p):\|q-p_1\|<r\}$ (of uniform radius $r$) of the usual norm of $M$, such that any point $p_2$ in the ball is joined to $p_1$ by a unique geodesic, which is shorter than any other piecewise smooth curve lying inside this ball. We also give an intrinsic (algebraic) characterization of the directions of degeneracy of the submanifold inclusion ${\cal O}(p)\subset {\cal P}(M_1)$, where the last set denotes the Grassmann manifold of the von Neumann algebra generated by $M$ and $p$.

Finsler geometry and actions of the p-Schatten unitary groups

Let $p$ be an even positive integer and $U_p(H)$ be the Banach-Lie group of unitary operators $u$ which verify that $u-1$ belongs to the $p$-Schatten ideal $B_p(H)$. Let ${\cal O}$ be a smooth manifold on which $U_p(H)$ acts transitively and smoothly. Then one can endow ${\cal O}$ with a natural Finsler metric in terms of the $p$-Schatten norm and the action of $U_p(H)$. Our main result establishes that for any pair of given initial conditions $$ x\in {\cal O}\hbox{and} X\in (T{\cal O})_x $$ there exists a curve $δ(t)=e^{tz}\cdot x$ in ${\cal O}$, with $z$ a skew-hermitian element in the $p$-Schatten class such that $$ δ(0)=x \hbox{and} \dotδ(0)=X, $$ which remains minimal as long as $t\|z\|_p\le π/4$. Moreover, $δ$ is unique with these properties. We also show that the metric space $({\cal O},d)$ ($d=$ rectifiable distance) is complete. In the process we establish minimality results in the groups $U_p(H)$, and a convexity property for the rectifiable distance. As an example of these spaces, we treat the case of the unitary orbit $$ {\cal O}=\{uAu^*: u\in U_p(H)\} $$ of a self-adjoint operator $A\in B(H)$.

Norm Inequalities in Operator Ideals

In this paper we introduce a new technique for proving norm inequalities in operator ideals with an unitarily invariant norm. Among the well known inequalities which can be proved with this technique are the Löwner-Heinz inequality, inequalities relating various operator means and the Corach-Porta-Recht inequality. We prove two general inequalities and from them we derive several inequalities by specialization, many of them new. We also show how some inequalities, known to be valid for matrices or bounded operators, can be extended with this technique to normed ideals in $C^*$-algebras, in particular to the noncommutative $L^p$-spaces of a semi-finite von Neumann algebra.

Lagrangian Grassmannian in Infinite Dimension

Given a complex structure $J$ on a real (finite or infinite dimensional) Hilbert space $H$, we study the geometry of the Lagrangian Grassmannian $Λ(H)$ of $H$, i.e. the set of closed linear subspaces $L\subset H$ such that $$J(L)=L^\perp.$$ The complex unitary group $U(H_J)$, consisting of the elements of the orthogonal group of $H$ which are complex linear for the given complex structure, acts transitively on $Λ(H)$ and induces a natural linear connection in $Λ(H)$. It is shown that any pair of Lagrangian subspaces can be joined by a geodesic of this connection. A Finsler metric can also be introduced, if one regards subspaces $L$ as projections $p_L$ (=the orthogonal projection onto $L$) or symmetries $\e_L=2p_L-I$, namely measuring tangent vectors with the operator norm. We show that for this metric the Hopf-Rinow theorem is valid in $Λ(H)$: a geodesic joining a pair of Lagrangian subspaces can be chosen to be of minimal length. We extend these results to the classical Banach-Lie groups of Schatten.

Nonpositively curved metric in the positive cone of a finite von Neumann algebra

In this paper we study the metric geometry of the space $Σ$ of positive invertible elements of a von Neumann algebra ${\mathcal A}$ with a finite, normal and faithful tracial state $τ$. The trace induces an incomplete Riemannian metric $ _a=τ(ya^{-1}xa^{-1})$, and though the techniques involved are quite different, the situation here resembles in many relevant aspects that of the $n\times n$ matrices when they are regarded as a symmetric space. For instance we prove that geodesics are the shortest paths for the metric induced, and that the geodesic distance is a convex function; we give an intrinsic (algebraic) characterization of the geodesically convex submanifolds $M$ of $Σ$, and under suitable hypothesis we prove a factorization theorem for elements in the algebra that resembles the Iwasawa decomposition for matrices. This factorization is obtained \textit{via} a nonlinear orthogonal projection $Π_M:Σ\to M$, a map which turns out to be contractive for the geodesic distance.
