Lepton pair emission in the top quark decay $t \to bW^+\ell^-\ell^+$

The heaviness of the top quark makes its 2-body decay mode $t \to bW^+$ to be dominant, at such level that hardly any other decay mode reaches a detectable branching ratio (BR) within the SM. Here we study the decay $t \to bW^+\ell^-\ell^+$ ($\ell=e, μ, τ$), which diverges for massless leptons, and it can reach a BR $\sim \mathcal{O}(10^{-5}\sim 10^{-6})$ for reasonable values of the low energy cut in the lepton-pair invariant mass. This rate surpasses almost any other rare decays such as $t \to cX$ ($X=γ,Z,g,H, W^+W^-$), and thus offers the possibility of being detectable. Furthermore, the estimate of this channel is relevant because it can mimic the signal arising from the lepton number violating decay $t\to bW^-\ell^+\ell^+$, when the $W$ boson decays into lepton channels.

Bounding resonant Majorana neutrinos from four-body B and D decays

Searches of lepton-number violation in different processes are very useful to constrain the parameter space of Majorana neutrinos. Here we use available upper bounds on the branching fractions of B^- -> D^0pi^+mu^-mu^- and D^0 -> (pi^-pi^-/K^-pi^-) mu^-mu^- decays to derive constraints on the mass and mixings of Majorana neutrinos by assuming they are produced resonantly in these four-body decays. While the excluded region obtained from B^- decays are competitive with existing limits from three-body D^- and B^- decays, it is shown that experimental improvements on D^0 decays offer a good potential to provide similar results.

Lepton number violation in tau lepton decays

Recent studies of novel four-body lepton number violating decays of $τ$ leptons and neutral $B$ mesons are summarized and updated. These decays are assumed to be enhanced by the exchange of resonant Majorana neutrinos. It is shown that the $τ^- \to π^+l^-l^-ν_τ$ decay channels, with $l=e$ or $μ$, can provide stronger constraints on the mixing vs. mass parameter space of resonant Majorana neutrinos than analogous three-body decays of charged $B$ mesons.

Lepton number violating four-body tau lepton decays

We study the four-body tau^+- -> nu_tau l^+- l^+- X^-+ decays where l=e or mu and X=pi, K, rho and K^* mesons. These decay processes violate the total lepton number (|Delta L|=2) and can be induced by the exchange of Majorana neutrinos. We consider an scenario where these decays are dominated by the exchange of only one heavy neutrino which produces an enhancement of the decay amplitude via the resonant mechanism. Searches for these novel decay channels with branching fractions sensitivities of (10^-7) can provide constraints on the parameter space of the Majorana neutrinos which are stronger than the ones obtained from Delta L=2 decays of charged pseudoscalar mesons.

A new strategy for probing the Majorana neutrino CP violating phases and masses

We propose a new strategy for detecting the CP-violating phases and the effective mass of muon Majorana neutrinos by measuring observables associated with neutrino-antineutrino oscillations in $π^{\pm}$ decays. Within the generic framework of quantum field theory, we compute the non-factorizable probability for producing a pair of same-charged muons in $π^{\pm}$ decays as a distinctive signature of $ν_μ-\bar{ν_μ}$ oscillations. We show that an intense neutrino beam through a long baseline experiment is favored for probing the Majorana phases. Using the neutrino-antineutrino oscillation probability reported by MINOS collaboration, a new stringent bound on the effective muon-neutrino mass is derived.

QFT results for neutrino oscillations and New Physics

The CP asymmetry in neutrino oscillations, assuming new physics at production and/or detection processes, is analyzed. We compute this CP asymmetry using the standard quantum field theory within a general new physics scenario that may generate new sources of CP and flavor violation. Well known results for the CP asymmetry are reproduced in the case of V -A operators, and additional contributions from new physics operators are derived. We apply this formalism to SUSY extensions of the Standard Model where the contributions from new operators could produce a CP asymmetry observable in the next generation of neutrino experiments.
