Angular momentum tail contributions to compact binary dynamics

We derive the effective action governing the dynamics of a compact binary system when gravitational radiation is emitted by any mass or current multipole, scattered by the quasi-static field associated with the binary's angular momentum, and then reabsorbed. Among such angular momentum failed-tail processes, the ones involving multipole moments up to mass and current octupoles, which mix also with quadrupoles of opposite parity, contribute to the system dynamics at sixth post-Newtonian order; we display these terms explicitly as a particular case of our general derivation. Additionally, we derive the radiative multipole moments associated to arbitrary angular momentum failed-tails in emission processes.

Conservative binary dynamics from gravitational tail emission processes

We re-analyze the far zone contribution to the two-body conservative dynamics arising from interaction between radiative and longitudinal modes, the latter sourced by mass and angular momentum, which in the mass case is known as tail process. We verify the expected correspondence between two loop self-energy amplitudes and the gluing of two classical (one leading order, one at one loop) emission amplitudes. In particular we show that the factorization of the self-energy amplitude involving the angular momentum is violated when applying standard computation procedures, due to a violation of the Lorentz gauge condition commonly adopted in perturbative computations. We show however that a straightforward fix exists, as the violation corresponds to a consistent anomaly, and it can be re-absorbed by the variation of a suitable action functional.

Conservative binary dynamics to third post-Minkowskian order beyond General Relativity

We present the conservative dynamics of compact binaries to third order in the post-Minkowskian approximation in a theory that extends general relativity by a massless scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. We employ the effective field theory approach to construct the effective action of binary systems by integrating out the metric and scalar degrees of freedom that mediate the gravitational interactions between the two bodies. We derive analytical expressions for the scattering impulse and the deflection angle to third order in the post-Minkowskian expansion. Our results are found to be in agreement, in the overlapping regimes, with state-of-the-art calculations in the post-Newtonian/post-Minkowskian theory.

Gravitational memory contributions to waveform and effective action

We use Effective Field Theory techniques to derive the quadrupole-quadrupole part of the gravitational wave, obtaining a waveform in agreement with previous results found within the multipolar-post-Minkowskian method. In particular we emphasize the role of radiation-reaction terms, which affect the energy-momentum balance between source and radiation. An in-in effective action is then derived along the same principles and it is shown to provide energy and angular momentum balance equations in agreement with the corresponding fluxes carried at infinity by gravitational radiation.

Gravitational Multipole Renormalization

We compute the effect of scattering gravitational radiation off the static background curvature, up to second order in Newton constant, known in literature as tail and tail-of-tail processes, for generic electric and magnetic multipoles. Starting from the multipole expansion of composite compact objects, and as expected due to the known electric quadrupole case, both long- and short-distance (UV) divergences are encountered. The former disappears from properly defined observables, the latter are renormalized and their associated logarithms give rise to a classical renormalization group flow. UV divergences alert for incompleteness of the multipolar description of the composite source, and are expected not to be present in a UV-complete theory, as explicitly derived in literature for the case of conservative dynamics. Logarithmic terms from tail-of-tail processes associated to generic magnetic multipoles are computed in this work for the first time.

Post-Newtonian Dynamics of Spinning Black Hole Binaries in Einstein-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

We explore the post-Newtonian dynamics of spinning black hole (BH) binaries in Einstein-ScalarGauss-Bonnet (ESGB) gravity, a theory that modifies general relativity by introducing a massless scalar field coupled nonminimally to gravity via the Gauss-Bonnet term. By employing an effective field theory (EFT) approach, we extend the Routhian formalism to incorporate spin effects in scalar interactions. In this formalism, we derive for the first time the effective two-body potential for spinning BHs up to the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order in generic ESGB gravity theories. This potential is expressed in terms of the sensitivities of the BHs, which are then obtained through a matching procedure using analytic BH solutions derived here within a slow-rotation approximation, accurate to seventh order in the Gauss-Bonnet coupling and fifth order in the BH spin. We also examine the thermodynamic properties of these rotating solutions, which, as shown in previous work, yield important insights into the inspiral phase evolution in ESGB gravity.

Binary dynamics to second post-Newtonian order in scalar-tensor and Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity from effective field theory

Using effective field theory methods, we compute in detail the Lagrangian for the conservative dynamics of compact binary systems, for spinless constituents and in the gravitationally bound case, in massless scalar-tensor (ST) and Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity (EsGB) to the second post-Newtonian (2PN) order. We employ the Kaluza-Klein parametrization of the metric, and demonstrate that, also in this case, a significant reduction in the number of diagrams is achieved. Still, to the 2PN accuracy, an additional 39 diagrams involving scalar interactions must be added to the pure general relativistic result. Diagrams involving the Gauss-Bonnet term at the formal 1PN order are computed and shown to scale as a 3PN correction when observational constraints are taken into account. We also investigate at which order the additional $\mathcal{O}(G^3)$ topologies contribute. Finally, the results derived in this paper provide an essential step toward the correct derivation of the conservative dynamics at the 3PN level in ST and EsGB theories.

Classical Amplitudes in Gravitational-Wave Physics

In this thesis, we study emission amplitudes for the class of nonlinear processes of tails, which are processes of order $G_N^2$, and represent the effect of scattering gravitational radiation off the static background curvature, including not only mass tails but also the "failed" tails due to the angular momentum of the source. As originally shown in our work, some of these amplitudes present anomalies, which are then properly understood and corrected with field theory tools which have straightforward counterpart in traditional methods. We also investigate the relation between emission and self-energy diagrams and, in particular, show that a correction to the anomalous self-energy diagrams is necessary to correctly account for conservative terms that arise from radiative processes. From this, we obtain the correct contribution to the conservative 5PN stemming from the electric quadrupole angular momentum failed tail, correcting previous results in the literature. Besides this, we also compute for the first time the conservative contributions from the angular momentum failed tail, for arbitrary multipole moments. Subsequently, we explore the natural higher-order extension (of order $G_N^3$) of the mass tails, called tails of tails, for generic electric and magnetic multipoles. As we will see, both long- and short-distance divergences are encountered, which are then properly understood and dealt with in terms of standard renormalization techniques. In this case, we are able to resum the logarithmic contributions through the integration of the renormalization group equation. Thus, in this thesis, we have extended the post-Newtonian perturbative expansion in the particularly thorny region of processes involving the mixture of radiative and potential modes.

Gravitational radiation contributions to the two-body scattering angle

We compute the contribution to the two-body scattering angle of a specific class of interactions involving the exchange of gravitational radiative degrees of freedom, including the nonlinear memory process and square of radiation reaction effects. Our computation is performed directly from the equations of motion, thus computing the overall effect of both conservative and dissipative processes. Such contributions provide in principle the last missing ingredients to compute the scattering angle at fifth post-Newtonian, at fourth post-Minkowskian order.

Tail contributions to gravitational conservative dynamics

We compute tail contributions to the conservative dynamics of a generic self-gravitating system, for every multipole order, of either electric and magnetic parity. Such contributions arise when gravitational radiation is backscattered by the static curvature generated by the source itself and reabsorbed. Tail processes are relevant for the study of compact binary dynamics starting from the fourth post-Newtonian order. Within this context, we resolve a discrepancy recently arised at fifth post-Newtonian order between Effective Field Theory and self-force results.

Classical Gravitational Self-Energy from Double Copy

We apply the classical double copy to the calculation of self-energy of composite systems with multipolar coupling to gravitational field, obtaining next-to-leading order results in the gravitational coupling $G_N$ by generalizing color to kinematics replacement rules known in literature. When applied to the multipolar description of the two-body system, the self-energy diagrams studied in this work correspond to tail processes, whose physical interpretation is of radiation being emitted by the non-relativistic source, scattered by the curvature generated by the binary system and then re-absorbed by the same source. These processes contribute to the conservative two-body dynamics and the present work represents a decisive step towards the systematic use of double copy within the multipolar post-Minkowskian expansion.

A Class of Higher-Dimensional Solutions of Einstein's Vacuum Equation

A new class of higher-dimensional exact solutions of Einstein's vacuum equation is presented. These metrics are written in terms of the exponential of a symmetric matrix and when this matrix is diagonal the solution reduces to higher-dimensional generalizations of Kasner spacetime with a cosmological constant. On the other hand, the metrics attained when such matrix is non-diagonal have more intricate algebraic structures. Such solutions have not been presented in the literature yet.

A Class of Integrable Metrics II

Starting with a subclass of the four-dimensional spaces possessing two commuting Killing vectors and a non-trivial Killing tensor, we fully integrate Einstein's vacuum equation with a cosmological constant. Although most of the solutions happen to be already known, we have found a solution that, as far as we could search for, has not been attained before. We also characterize the geometric properties of this new solution, it is a Kundt spacetime of Petrov type II possessing a null Killing vector field and an isometry algebra that is three-dimensional and abelian. In particular, such solution becomes a pp-wave spacetime when the cosmological constant is set to zero.

A Class of Integrable Metrics and Gauge Fields

Starting with the most general four-dimensional spacetime possessing two commuting Killing vectors and a nontrivial Killing tensor, we analytically integrate Einstein-Yang-Mills equations for a completely arbitrary gauge group. It is assumed that the gauge field inherits the symmetries of the background and is aligned with the principal null directions of the spacetime.
