Simplicity criteria for etale groupoid $C^*$-algebras

We develop a framework suitable for obtaining simplicity criteria for reduced $C^*$-algebras of Hausdorff etale groupoids. This is based on the study of certain non-degenerate $C^*$-subalgebras (in the case of groupoids, the $C^*$-algebra of the interior isotropy bundle), for which one can control (non-unique) state extensions to the ambient C*-algebra. As an application, we give simplicity criteria for reduced crossed products of abelian $C^*$-algebras by discrete groups.

Traces arising from regular inclusions

We study the problem of extending a state on an abelian $C^*$- subalgebra to a tracial state on the ambient $C^*$-algebra. We propose an approach that is well-suited to the case of regular inclusions, in which there is a large supply of normalizers of the subalgebra. Conditional expectations onto the subalgebra give natural extensions of a state to the ambient $C^*$-algebra; we prove that these extensions are tracial states if and only if certain invariance properties of both the state and conditional expectations are satisfied. In the example of a groupoid $C^*$-algebra, these invariance properties correspond to invariance of associated measures on the unit space under the action of bisections. Using our framework, we are able to completely describe the tracial state space of a Cuntz-Krieger graph algebra. Along the way we introduce certain operations called graph tightenings, which both streamline our description and provides connections to related finiteness questions in graph $C^*$-algebras. Our investigation has close connections with the so-called unique state extension property and its variants.

Cartan subalgebras in C*-algebras of Hausdorff etale groupoids

The reduced $C^*$-algebra of the interior of the isotropy in any Hausdorff étale groupoid $G$ embeds as a $C^*$-subalgebra $M$ of the reduced $C^*$-algebra of $G$. We prove that the set of pure states of $M$ with unique extension is dense, and deduce that any representation of the reduced $C^*$-algebra of $G$ that is injective on $M$ is faithful. We prove that there is a conditional expectation from the reduced $C^*$-algebra of $G$ onto $M$ if and only if the interior of the isotropy in $G$ is closed. Using this, we prove that when the interior of the isotropy is abelian and closed, $M$ is a Cartan subalgebra. We prove that for a large class of groupoids $G$ with abelian isotropy---including all Deaconu--Renault groupoids associated to discrete abelian groups---$M$ is a maximal abelian subalgebra. In the specific case of $k$-graph groupoids, we deduce that $M$ is always maximal abelian, but show by example that it is not always Cartan.

Pseudo-Diagonals and Uniqueness Theorems

We examine a certain type of abelian C*-subalgebras that allow one to give a unified treatment of two uniqueness theorems: for graph C*-algebras and for certain reduced crossed products.

A generalized Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for higher rank graphs

We present a uniqueness theorem for k-graph C*-algebras that requires neither an aperiodicity nor a gauge invariance assumption. Specifically, we prove that for the injectivity of a representation of a k-graph C*-algebra, it is sufficient that the representation be injective on a distinguished abelian C*-subalgebra. A crucial part of the proof is the application of an abstract uniqueness theorem, which says that such a uniqueness property follows from the existence of a jointly faithful collection of states on the ambient C*-algebra, each of which is the unique extension of a state on the distinguished abelian C*-subalgebra.

Rough solutions of the Einstein constraints on closed manifolds without near-CMC conditions

We consider the conformal decomposition of Einstein's constraint equations introduced by Lichnerowicz and York, on a closed manifold. We establish existence of non-CMC weak solutions using a combination of a priori estimates for the individual Hamiltonian and momentum constraints, barrier constructions for the Hamiltonian constraint, and topological fixed-point arguments. An important new feature of these results is the absense of the near-CMC assumption when the rescaled background metric is in the positive Yamabe class, if the freely specifiable part of the data given by the matter fields (if present) and the traceless-transverse part of the rescaled extrinsic curvature are taken to be sufficiently small. In this case, the mean extrinsic curvature can be taken to be an arbitrary smooth function without restrictions on the size of its spatial derivatives, giving what are apparently the first non-CMC existence results without the near-CMC assumption. Standard bootstrapping arguments to increase the regularity of the conformal factor are blocked by the use of a weak background metric. In the CMC case, we recover Maxwell's rough solution results as a special case. Our results extend the 1996 non-CMC result of Isenberg and Moncrief in three ways: (1) the near-CMC assumption is removed in the case of the positive Yamabe class; (2) regularity is extended down to the maximum allowed by the background metric and the matter; and (3) the result holds for all three Yamabe classes. This last extension was also accomplished recently by Allen, Clausen and Isenberg, although their result is restricted to the near-CMC case and to smoother background metrics and data.

A minimization problem for the lapse and the initial-boundary value problem for Einstein's field equations

We discuss the initial-boundary value problem of General Relativity. Previous considerations for a toy model problem in electrodynamics motivate the introduction of a variational principle for the lapse with several attractive properties. In particular, it is argued that the resulting elliptic gauge condition for the lapse together with a suitable condition for the shift and constraint-preserving boundary conditions controlling the Weyl scalar Psi_0 are expected to yield a well posed initial-boundary value problem for metric formulations of Einstein's field equations which are commonly used in numerical relativity. To present a simple and explicit example we consider the 3+1 decomposition introduced by York of the field equations on a cubic domain with two periodic directions and prove in the weak field limit that our gauge condition for the lapse and our boundary conditions lead to a well posed problem. The method discussed here is quite general and should also yield well posed problems for different ways of writing the evolution equations, including first order symmetric hyperbolic or mixed first-order second-order formulations. Well posed initial-boundary value formulations for the linearization about arbitrary stationary configurations will be presented elsewhere.

Abelian self-commutators in finite factors

An abelian self-commutator in a C*-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ is an element $A$ that can be written as $A=X^*X-XX^*$, with $X\in\mathcal{A}$ such that $X^*X$ and $XX^*$ commute. It is shown that, given a finite AW*-factor $\mathcal{A}$, there exists another finite AW*-factor $\mathcal{M}$ of same type as $\mathcal{A}$, that contains $\mathcal{A}$ as an AW*-subfactor, such that any self-adjoint element $X\in\mathcal{M}$ of quasitrace zero is an abelian self-commutator in $\mathcal{M}$.

Spectral Symmetry in II_1 Factors

A self-adjoint element in a finite AW*-factor is spectrally symmetric, if its spectral measure under the quasitrace is invariant under the change of variables $t\longmapsto -t$. We show that if $\mathcal{A}$ is an AW*-factor of type II_1, a self-djoint element in $\mathcal{A}$, without full support, has quasitrace zero, if and only if it can be written as a sum of at most three commuting spectrally symmetric elements.

Strongly hyperbolic second order Einstein's evolution equations

BSSN-type evolution equations are discussed. The name refers to the Baumgarte, Shapiro, Shibata, and Nakamura version of the Einstein evolution equations, without introducing the conformal-traceless decomposition but keeping the three connection functions and including a densitized lapse. It is proved that a pseudo-differential first order reduction of these equations is strongly hyperbolic. In the same way, densitized Arnowitt-Deser-Misner evolution equations are found to be weakly hyperbolic. In both cases, the positive densitized lapse function and the spacelike shift vector are arbitrary given fields. This first order pseudodifferential reduction adds no extra equations to the system and so no extra constraints.

Initial data for fluid bodies in general relativity

We show that there exist asymptotically flat almost-smooth initial data for Einstein-perfect fluid's equation that represent an isolated liquid-type body. By liquid-type body we mean that the fluid energy density has compact support and takes a strictly positive constant value at its boundary. By almost-smooth we mean that all initial data fields are smooth everywhere on the initial hypersurface except at the body boundary, where tangential derivatives of any order are continuous at that boundary. The mass of asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-times

We give a definition of mass for spacelike hypersurfaces in space-times with metrics which are asymptotic to the anti-de Sitter one, or to a class of generalizations thereof. We present the results of gr-qc/0110014 which show that our definition provides a geometric invariant for a spacelike hypersurface embedded in a space-time. Some further global invariants are also given.

Relativistic Lagrange Formulation

It is well-known that the equations for a simple fluid can be cast into what is called their Lagrange formulation. We introduce a notion of a generalized Lagrange formulation, which is applicable to a wide variety of systems of partial differential equations. These include numerous systems of physical interest, in particular, those for various material media in general relativity. There is proved a key theorem, to the effect that, if the original (Euler) system admits an initial-value formulation, then so does its generalized Lagrange formulation.
