Restriction of odd degree characters and natural correspondences

Let $q$ be an odd prime power, $n > 1$, and let $P$ denote a maximal parabolic subgroup of $GL_n(q)$ with Levi subgroup $GL_{n-1}(q) \times GL_1(q)$. We restrict the odd-degree irreducible characters of $GL_n(q)$ to $P$ to discover a natural correspondence of characters, both for $GL_n(q)$ and $SL_n(q)$. A similar result is established for certain finite groups with self-normalizing Sylow $p$-subgroups. We also construct a canonical bijection between the odd-degree irreducible characters of $S_n$ and those of $M$, where $M$ is any maximal subgroup of $S_n$ of odd index; as well as between the odd-degree irreducible characters of $G = GL_n(q)$ or $GU_n(q)$ with $q$ odd and those of $N_{G}(P)$, where $P$ is a Sylow $2$-subgroup of $G$. Since our bijections commute with the action of the absolute Galois group over the rationals, we conclude that the fields of values of character correspondents are the same. We use this to answer some questions of R. Gow.

On Blocks with One Modular Character

Suppose that $B$ is a Brauer $p$-block of a finite group $G$ with a unique modular character $φ$. We prove that $φ$ is liftable to an ordinary character of $G$ (which moreover is $p$-rational for odd $p$). This confirms the basic set conjecture for these blocks.

Factoring Ore polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ is difficult

We show that the effective factorization of Ore polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ is still an open problem. This is so because the known algorithm in [1] presents two gaps, and therefore it does not cover all the examples. We amend one of the gaps, and we discuss what kind of partial factorizations can be then computed by using [1].

Invariant blocks under coprime actions

If a finite group $A$ acts coprimely as automorphisms on a finite group $G$, then the $A$-invariant Brauer $p$-blocks of $G$ are exactly those that contain $A$-invariant irreducible characters.

Ideal codes over separable ring extensions

This paper investigates the application of the theoretical algebraic notion of a separable ring extension, in the realm of cyclic convolutional codes or, more generally, ideal codes. We work under very mild conditions, that cover all previously known as well as new non trivial examples. It is proved that ideal codes are direct summands as left ideals of the underlying non-commutative algebra, in analogy with cyclic block codes. This implies, in particular, that they are generated by an idempotent element. Hence, by using a suitable separability element, we design an efficient algorithm for computing one of such idempotents.

A characterisation of nilpotent blocks

Let $B$ be a $p$-block of a finite group, and set $m=$ $\sum χ(1)^2$, the sum taken over all height zero characters of $B$. Motivated by a result of M. Isaacs characterising $p$-nilpotent finite groups in terms of character degrees, we show that $B$ is nilpotent if and only if the exact power of $p$ dividing $m$ is equal to the $p$-part of $|G:P|^2|P:R|$, where $P$ is a defect group of $B$ and where $R$ is the focal subgroup of $P$ with respect to a fusion system $\CF$ of $B$ on $P$. The proof involves the hyperfocal subalgebra $D$ of a source algebra of $B$. We conjecture that all ordinary irreducible characters of $D$ have degree prime to $p$ if and only if the $\CF$-hyperfocal subgroup of $P$ is abelian.

Information-bit error rate and false positives in an MDS code

In this paper, a refinement of the weight distribution in an MDS code is computed. Concretely, the number of codewords with a fixed amount of nonzero bits in both information and redundancy parts is obtained. This refinement improves the theoretical approximation of the information-bit and -symbol error rate, in terms of the channel bit-error rate, in a block transmission through a discrete memoryless channel. Since a bounded distance reproducing encoder is assumed, the computation of the here-called false positive (a decoding failure with no information-symbol error) is provided. As a consequence, a new performance analysis of an MDS code is proposed.

Prime fuzzy ideals over noncommutative rings

In this paper we introduce prime fuzzy ideals over a noncommutative ring. This notion of primeness is equivalent to level cuts being crisp prime ideals. It also generalizes the one provided by Kumbhojkar and Bapat in [Not-so-fuzzy fuzzy ideals, Fuzzy Sets and Systems 37 (1990), 237--243], which lacks this equivalence in a noncommutative setting. Semiprime fuzzy ideals over a noncommutative ring are also defined and characterized as intersection of primes. This allows us to introduce the fuzzy prime radical and contribute to establish the basis of a Fuzzy Noncommutative Ring Theory.

The valued Gabriel quiver of a wedge product and semiprime coalgebras

We make a first approach to the representation theory of the wedge product of coalgebras by means of the description of its valued Gabriel quiver. Then we define semiprime coalgebras and study its category of comodules by the use of localization techniques. In particular, we prove that, whether its Gabriel quiver is locally finite, any monomial semiprime fc-tame coalgebra is string. We also prove a weaker version of Eisenbud-Griffith theorem, namely, any hereditary semiprime strictly quasi-finite coalgebra is serial.

On Endo-trivial Modules for p-Solvable Groups

We prove a conjecture of J. Carlson, N. Mazza and J. Thévenaz; namely, we will prove that if $G$ is a finite $p$-nilpotent group which contains a non-cyclic elementary Abelian $p$-subgroup and $k$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$, then all simple endo-trivial $kG$-modules are $1$-dimensional.

On the classification of twisting maps between $K^n$ and $K^m$

We define the notion of admissible pair for an algebra $A$, consisting on a couple $(Γ,R)$, where $Γ$ is a quiver and $R$ a unital, splitted and factorizable representation of $Γ$, and prove that the set of admissible pairs for $A$ is in one to one correspondence with the points of the variety of twisting maps $\mathcal{T}_A^n:=\mathcal{T}(K^n,A)$. We describe all these representations in the case $A=K^m$.

Blocks with Equal Height Zero Degrees

We study blocks all of whose height zero ordinary characters have the same degree. We suspect that these might be the Broue-Puig nilpotent blocks.

Factorization structures with a 2-dimensional factor

We introduce the notion of quantum duplicates of an (associative, unital) algebra, motivated by the problem of constructing toy-models for quantizations of certain configuration spaces in quantum mechanics. The proposed (algebraic) model relies on the classification of factorization structures with a two-dimensional factor. In the present paper, main properties of this particular kind of structures are determined, and we present a complete description of quantum duplicates of finite set algebras. As an application, we obtain a classification (up to isomorphism) of all the algebras of dimension 4 (over an arbitrary field) that can be factorized as a product of two factors.

Prime path coalgebras

We use prime coalgebras as a generalization of simple coalgebras, and observe that prime subcoalgebras represent the structure of the coalgebra in a more efficient way than simple coalgebras. In particular, in this work we focus our attention on the study and characterization of prime subcoalgebras of path coalgebras of quivers and, by extension, of prime pointed coalgebras.

Serial coalgebras and their valued Gabriel quivers

We study serial coalgebras by means of their valued Gabriel quivers. In particular, Hom-computable and representation-directed coalgebras are characterized. The Auslander-Reiten quiver of a serial coalgebra is described. Finally, a version of Eisenbud-Griffith theorem is proved, namely, every subcoalgebra of a prime, hereditary and strictly quasi-finite coalgebra is serial.

Localization in tame and wild coalgebras

We apply the theory of localization for tame and wild coalgebras in order to prove the following theorem: "Let Q be an acyclic quiver. Then any tame admissible subcoalgebra of KQ is the path coalgebra of a quiver with relations".
