Consistent Inversion of Noisy Non-Abelian X-Ray Transforms

For $M$ a simple surface, the non-linear statistical inverse problem of recovering a matrix field $Φ: M \to \mathfrak{so}(n)$ from discrete, noisy measurements of the $SO(n)$-valued scattering data $C_Φ$ of a solution of a matrix ODE is considered ($n\geq 2$). Injectivity of the map $Φ\mapsto C_Φ$ was established by [Paternain, Salo, Uhlmann; Geom.Funct.Anal. 2012]. A statistical algorithm for the solution of this inverse problem based on Gaussian process priors is proposed, and it is shown how it can be implemented by infinite-dimensional MCMC methods. It is further shown that as the number $N$ of measurements of point-evaluations of $C_Φ$ increases, the statistical error in the recovery of $Φ$ converges to zero in $L^2(M)$-distance at a rate that is algebraic in $1/N$, and approaches $1/\sqrt N$ for smooth matrix fields $Φ$. The proof relies, among other things, on a new stability estimate for the inverse map $C_Φ\to Φ$. Key applications of our results are discussed in the case $n=3$ to polarimetric neutron tomography, see [Desai et al., Nature Sc.Rep. 2018] and [Hilger et al., Nature Comm. 2018]

Inverse problem for the Yang-Mills equations

We show that a connection can be recovered up to gauge from source-to-solution type data associated with the Yang-Mills equations in the four dimensional Minkowski space. Our proof analyzes the principal symbols of waves generated by suitable nonlinear interactions and reduces the inversion to a broken non-abelian light ray transform. The principal symbol analysis of the interaction is based on a delicate calculation that involves the structure of the Lie algebra under consideration and the final result holds for any compact Lie group.

Broken ray tensor tomography with one reflecting obstacle

We show that a tensor field of any rank integrates to zero over all broken rays if and only if it is a symmetrized covariant derivative of a lower order tensor which satisfies a symmetry condition at the reflecting part of the boundary and vanishes on the rest. This is done in a geometry with non-positive sectional curvature and a strictly convex obstacle in any dimension. We give two proofs, both of which contain new features also in the absence of reflections. The result is new even for scalars in dimensions above two.

Convex projective surfaces with compatible Weyl connection are hyperbolic

We show that a properly convex projective structure $\mathfrak{p}$ on a closed oriented surface of negative Euler characteristic arises from a Weyl connection if and only if $\mathfrak{p}$ is hyperbolic. We phrase the problem as a non-linear PDE for a Beltrami differential by using that $\mathfrak{p}$ admits a compatible Weyl connection if and only if a certain holomorphic curve exists. Turning this non-linear PDE into a transport equation, we obtain our result by applying methods from geometric inverse problems. In particular, we use an extension of a remarkable $L^2$-energy identity known as Pestov's identity to prove a vanishing theorem for the relevant transport equation.

Functions of constant geodesic X-ray transform

We show that the existence of a function in $L^{1}$ with constant geodesic X-ray transform imposes geometrical restrictions on the manifold. The boundary of the manifold has to be umbilical and in the case of a strictly convex Euclidean domain, it must be a ball. Functions with constant geodesic X-ray transform always exist on manifolds with rotational symmetry.

Detection of Hermitian connections in wave equations with cubic non-linearity

We consider the geometric non-linear inverse problem of recovering a Hermitian connection $A$ from the source-to-solution map of the cubic wave equation $\Box_{A}ϕ+κ|ϕ|^{2}ϕ=f$, where $κ\neq 0$ and $\Box_{A}$ is the connection wave operator in the Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{1+3}$. The equation arises naturally when considering the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations with Mexican hat type potentials. Our proof exploits the microlocal analysis of nonlinear wave interactions, but instead of employing information contained in the geometry of the wave front sets as in previous literature, we study the principal symbols of waves generated by suitable interactions. Moreover, our approach relies on inversion of a novel non-abelian broken light ray transform.

Lens rigidity for a particle in a Yang-Mills field

We consider the motion of a classical colored spinless particle under the influence of an external Yang-Mills potential $A$ on a compact manifold with boundary of dimension $\geq 3$. We show that under suitable convexity assumptions, we can recover the potential $A$, up to gauge transformations, from the lens data of the system, namely, scattering data plus travel times between boundary points.

Holomorphic differentials, thermostats and Anosov flows

We introduce a new family of thermostat flows on the unit tangent bundle of an oriented Riemannian $2$-manifold. Suitably reparametrised, these flows include the geodesic flow of metrics of negative Gauss curvature and the geodesic flow induced by the Hilbert metric on the quotient surface of divisible convex sets. We show that the family of flows can be parametrised in terms of certain weighted holomorphic differentials and investigate their properties. In particular, we prove that they admit a dominated splitting and we identify special cases in which the flows are Anosov. In the latter case, we study when they admit an invariant measure in the Lebesgue class and the regularity of the weak foliations.

The geodesic X-ray transform with matrix weights

Consider a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $\geq 3$ with strictly convex boundary, such that the manifold admits a strictly convex function. We show that the attenuated ray transform in the presence of an arbitrary connection and Higgs field is injective modulo the natural obstruction for functions and one-forms. We also show that the connection and the Higgs field are uniquely determined by the scattering relation modulo gauge transformations. The proofs involve a reduction to a local result showing that the geodesic X-ray transform with a matrix weight can be inverted locally near a point of strict convexity at the boundary, and a detailed analysis of layer stripping arguments based on strictly convex exhaustion functions. As a somewhat striking corollary, we show that these integral geometry problems can be solved on strictly convex manifolds of dimension $\geq 3$ having non-negative sectional curvature (similar results were known earlier in negative sectional curvature). We also apply our methods to solve some inverse problems in quantum state tomography and polarization tomography.

Efficient Nonparametric Bayesian Inference For X-Ray Transforms

We consider the statistical inverse problem of recovering a function $f: M \to \mathbb R$, where $M$ is a smooth compact Riemannian manifold with boundary, from measurements of general $X$-ray transforms $I_a(f)$ of $f$, corrupted by additive Gaussian noise. For $M$ equal to the unit disk with `flat' geometry and $a=0$ this reduces to the standard Radon transform, but our general setting allows for anisotropic media $M$ and can further model local `attenuation' effects -- both highly relevant in practical imaging problems such as SPECT tomography. We propose a nonparametric Bayesian inference approach based on standard Gaussian process priors for $f$. The posterior reconstruction of $f$ corresponds to a Tikhonov regulariser with a reproducing kernel Hilbert space norm penalty that does not require the calculation of the singular value decomposition of the forward operator $I_a$. We prove Bernstein-von Mises theorems that entail that posterior-based inferences such as credible sets are valid and optimal from a frequentist point of view for a large family of semi-parametric aspects of $f$. In particular we derive the asymptotic distribution of smooth linear functionals of the Tikhonov regulariser, which is shown to attain the semi-parametric Cramér-Rao information bound. The proofs rely on an invertibility result for the `Fisher information' operator $I_a^*I_a$ between suitable function spaces, a result of independent interest that relies on techniques from microlocal analysis. We illustrate the performance of the proposed method via simulations in various settings.

The geodesic X-ray transform with a $GL(n,\mathbb{C})$-connection

We derive reconstruction formulas for a family of geodesic ray transforms with connection, defined on simple Riemannian surfaces. Such formulas provide injectivity of such all transforms in a neighbourhood of constant curvature metrics and non-unitary connections with curvature close to zero. If certain Fredholm equations are injective in the absence of connection, then for any smooth enough connection multiplied by a complex parameter, the corresponding transform is injective for all values of that parameter outside a discrete set. Range characterizations are also provided, as well as numerical illustrations.

Inverse problems for the connection Laplacian

We reconstruct a Riemannian manifold and a Hermitian vector bundle with compatible connection from the hyperbolic Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator associated with the wave equation of the connection Laplacian. The boundary data is local and the reconstruction is up to the natural gauge transformations of the problem. As a corollary we derive an elliptic analogue of the main result which solves a Calderon problem for connections on a cylinder.

Invariant distributions and the geodesic ray transform

We establish an equivalence principle between the solenoidal injectivity of the geodesic ray transform acting on symmetric $m$-tensors and the existence of invariant distributions or smooth first integrals with prescribed projection over the set of solenoidal $m$-tensors. We work with compact simple manifolds, but several of our results apply to non-trapping manifolds with strictly convex boundary.

The X-ray transform for connections in negative curvature

We consider integral geometry inverse problems for unitary connections and skew-Hermitian Higgs fields on manifolds with negative sectional curvature. The results apply to manifolds in any dimension, with or without boundary, and also in the presence of trapped geodesics. In the boundary case, we show injectivity of the attenuated ray transform on tensor fields with values in a Hermitian bundle (i.e. vector valued case). We also show that a connection and Higgs field on a Hermitian bundle are determined up to gauge by the knowledge of the parallel transport between boundary points along all possible geodesics. The main tools are an energy identity, the Pestov identity with a unitary connection, which is presented in a general form, and a precise analysis of the singularities of solutions of transport equations when there are trapped geodesics. In the case of closed manifolds, we obtain similar results modulo the obstruction given by twisted conformal Killing tensors, and we also study this obstruction.

Conformal great circle flows on the three-sphere

We consider a closed orientable Riemannian 3-manifold $(M,g)$ and a vector field $X$ with unit norm whose integral curves are geodesics of $g$. Any such vector field determines naturally a 2-plane bundle contained in the kernel of the contact form of the geodesic flow of $g$. We study when this 2-plane bundle remains invariant under two natural almost complex structures. We also provide a geometric condition that ensures that $X$ is the Reeb vector field of the 1-form $λ$ obtained by contracting $g$ with $X$. We apply these results to the case of great circle flows on the 3-sphere with two objectives in mind: one is to recover the result in \cite{GG} that a volume preserving great circle flow must be Hopf and the other is to characterize in a similar fashion great circle flows that are conformal relative to the almost complex structure in the kernel of $λ$ given by rotation by $π/2$ according to the orientation of $M$.

Invariant distributions, Beurling transforms and tensor tomography in higher dimensions

In the recent articles \cite{PSU1,PSU3}, a number of tensor tomography results were proved on two-dimensional manifolds. The purpose of this paper is to extend some of these methods to manifolds of any dimension. A central concept is the surjectivity of the adjoint of the geodesic ray transform, or equivalently the existence of certain distributions that are invariant under geodesic flow. We prove that on any Anosov manifold, one can find invariant distributions with controlled first Fourier coefficients. The proof is based on subelliptic type estimates and a Pestov identity. We present an alternative construction valid on manifolds with nonpositive curvature, based on the fact that a natural Beurling transform on such manifolds turns out to be essentially a contraction. Finally, we obtain uniqueness results in tensor tomography both on simple and Anosov manifolds that improve earlier results by assuming a condition on the terminator value for a modified Jacobi equation.

Spectral rigidity and invariant distributions on Anosov surfaces

This article considers inverse problems on closed Riemannian surfaces whose geodesic flow is Anosov. We prove spectral rigidity for any Anosov surface and injectivity of the geodesic ray transform on solenoidal 2-tensors. We also establish surjectivity results for the adjoint of the geodesic ray transform on solenoidal tensors. The surjectivity results are of independent interest and imply the existence of many geometric invariant distributions on the unit sphere bundle. In particular, we show that on any Anosov surface $(M,g)$, given a smooth function $f$ on $M$ there is a distribution in the Sobolev space $H^{-1}(SM)$ that is invariant under the geodesic flow and whose projection to $M$ is the given function $f$.
