Nilpotent groups have polynomially bounded homological filling invariants

Gromov claimed, with a sketch of proof, that simply connected nilpotent Lie groups have polynomially bounded filling invariants. The literature establishes this, often with a stronger conclusion where the exponent of polynomiality is computed or estimated, for some classes of nilpotent groups, or ranges of filling degrees. We provide a proof, in part based on Gromov's hints, yielding at once (non-optimal) polynomial upper bounds on the homological filling invariants in every degree for all finitely generated nilpotent groups, or equivalently, for all simply connected nilpotent Lie groups having lattices.

Dehn functions: computations, lower bounds, and the quasiisometric rigidity of $\rm{Sol}_5$

We establish distortion estimates in completely solvable Lie groups, using a sublinear bilipschitz retraction constructed by Cornulier, and interpolating between two theorems of Osin. This provides new lower bounds on Dehn functions. Our second main result is the quasiisometric rigidity of $\rm{Sol}_5$ and its lattices. Together with a theorem of Peng, a key tool for the rigidity is the complete list of Dehn functions and dimensions of asymptotic cones of all simply connected solvable Lie groups of exponential growth up to dimension $5$, which we compute using Cornulier and Tessera's results.

Sublinear Bilipschitz Equivalence and the Quasiisometric Classification of Solvable Lie Groups

We prove a product theorem for sublinear bilipschitz equivalences which generalizes the classical work of Kapovich, Kleiner and Leeb on quasiisometries between product spaces. We employ our product theorem to distinguish up to quasiisometry certain families of solvable groups which share the same dimension, cone-dimension and Dehn function; actually we do this by distinguishing them up to sublinear bilipschitz equivalence, which is slightly stronger. As an application, we recover the fact, recently obtained by Bourdon and R\'emy with different groups, that there exists uncountably many quasiisometry classes of indecomposable, non-unimodular, high rank solvable Lie groups.

On the Dehn functions of central products of nilpotent groups

We determine the Dehn functions of central products of two families of filiform nilpotent Lie groups of arbitrary dimension with all simply connected nilpotent Lie groups with cyclic centre and strictly lower nilpotency class. We also determine the Dehn functions of all central products of nilpotent Lie groups of dimension at most $5$ with one-dimensional centre. This confirms a conjecture of Llosa Isenrich, Pallier and Tessera for these cases, providing further evidence that the Dehn functions of central products are often strictly lower than those of the factors. Our work generalises previous results of Llosa Isenrich, Pallier and Tessera and produces an uncountable family of nilpotent Lie groups without lattices whose Dehn functions are strictly lower than the ones of the associated Carnot-graded groups. A consequence of our main result is the existence of an infinite family of groups such that Cornulier's bounds on the $e$ for which there is an $O(r^e)$-bilipschitz equivalence between them and their Carnot-graded groups are asymptotically optimal, as the nilpotency class goes to infinity.

Sublinear biLipschitz equivalence and sublinearly Morse boundaries

A sublinear biLipschitz equivalence (SBE) between metric spaces is a map from one space to another that distorts distances with bounded multiplicative constants and sublinear additive error. Given any sublinear function $\kappa$, $\kappa$-Morse boundaries are defined for all geodesic proper metric spaces as a quasi-isometrically invariant and metrizable topological space of quasi-geodesic rays. In this paper, we prove that $\kappa$-Morse boundaries of proper geodesic metric spaces are invariant under suitable SBEs. A tool in the proof is the use of sublinear rays, that is, sublinear bilispchitz embeddings of the half line, generalizing quasi-geodesic rays. As an application we distinguish a pair of right-angled Coxeter groups brought up by Behrstock up to sublinear biLipschitz equivalence. We also show that under mild assumptions, generic random walks on countable groups are sublinear rays.

Rough similarity of left-invariant Riemannian metrics on some Lie groups

We consider Lie groups that are either Heintze groups or Sol-type groups, which generalize the three-dimensional Lie group SOL. We prove that all left-invariant Riemannian metrics on each such a Lie group are roughly similar via the identity. This allows us to reformulate in a common framework former results by Le Donne-Xie, Eskin-Fisher-Whyte, Carrasco Piaggio, and recent results of Ferragut and Kleiner-M\"uller-Xie, on quasiisometries of these solvable groups.

On the logarithmic coarse structures of Lie groups and hyperbolic spaces

We characterize the Lie groups with finitely many connected components that are $O(u)$-bilipschitz equivalent (almost quasiisometric in the sense that the sublinear function $u$ replaces the additive bounds of quasiisometry) to the real hyperbolic space, or to the complex hyperbolic plane. The characterizations are expressed in terms of deformations of Lie algebras and in terms of pinching of sectional curvature of left-invariant Riemannian metrics in the real case. We also compare sublinear bilipschitz equivalence and coarse equivalence, and prove that every coarse equivalence between the logarithmic coarse structures of geodesic spaces is a $O(\log)$-bilipschitz equivalence. The Lie groups characterized are exactly those whose logarithmic coarse structure is equivalent to that of a real hyperbolic space or the complex hyperbolic plane. Finally we point out that a conjecture made by Tyson about the conformal dimensions of the boundaries of certain hyperbolic buildings holds conditionally to the four exponentials conjecture.

Cone-equivalent nilpotent groups with different Dehn functions

For every $k\geqslant 3$, we exhibit a simply connected $k$-nilpotent Lie group $N_k$ whose Dehn function behaves like $n^k$, while the Dehn function of its associated Carnot graded group $\mathsf{gr}(N_k)$ behaves like $n^{k+1}$. This property and its consequences allow us to reveal three new phenomena. First, since those groups have uniform lattices, this provides the first examples of pairs of finitely presented groups with bilipschitz asymptotic cones but with different Dehn functions. The second surprising feature of these groups is that for every even integer $k \geqslant 4$ the centralized Dehn function of $N_k$ behaves like $n^{k-1}$ and so has a different exponent than the Dehn function. This answers a question of Young. Finally, we turn our attention to sublinear bilipschitz equivalences (SBE). Introduced by Cornulier, these are maps between metric spaces inducing bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms between their asymptotic cones. These can be seen as weakenings of quasiisometries where the additive error is replaced by a sublinearly growing function $v$. We show that a $v$-SBE between $N_k$ and $\mathsf{gr}(N_k)$ must satisfy $v(n)\succcurlyeq n^{1/(2k + 2)}$, strengthening the fact that those two groups are not quasiisometric. This is the first instance where an explicit lower bound is provided for a pair of SBE groups.

Sublinear quasiconformality and the large-scale geometry of Heintze groups

This article analyzes sublinearly quasisymmetric homeo-morphisms (generalized quasisymmetric mappings), and draws applications to the sublinear large-scale geometry of negatively curved groups and spaces. It is proven that those homeomorphisms lack analytical properties but preserve a conformal dimension and appropriate function spaces, distinguishing certain (nonsymmetric) Riemannian negatively curved homogeneous spaces, and Fuchsian buildings, up to sublinearly biLipschitz equivalence (generalized quasiisometry).

Large-scale sublinearly Lipschitz geometry of hyperbolic spaces

Large-scale sublinearly Lipschitz maps have been introduced by Yves Cornulier in order to precisely state his theorems about asymptotic cones of Lie groups. In particular, Sublinearly biLipschitz Equivalences (SBE) are a weak variant of quasiisometries, with the only requirement of still inducing biLipschitz maps at the level of asymptotic cones. We focus here on hyperbolic metric spaces and study properties of their boundary extensions, reminiscent of quasiM{ö}bius mappings. We give a dimensional invariant on the boundary that allows to distinguish hyperbolic symmetric spaces up to SBE, answering a question of Druţu.
