Quantum Scattering in Schwarzschild Spacetime: Hawking Radiation and Black Hole Atmospheres

In this paper, we investigate scattering of a scalar field near a Schwarzschild black hole through its $S$-matrix. Within this framework, we obtain a novel derivation of Hawking radiation by computing the emission rate, which yields a Bose--Einstein distribution with temperature $T_H=(8πGM)^{-1}$, the Hawking temperature. In addition to Hawking radiation, the S-matrix exhibits antibound states, corresponding to excitations at the threshold of becoming scattering (bound) states if the potential is decreased (increased). We interpret these excitations as constituents of the black-hole quantum atmosphere: a thermalised region outside of the event horizon, which is the source of the Hawking radiation. Using the spectrum of antibound states, we found the atmospheric radius, $r_{\text{Atm}} \approx 2.77 r_{s}$, which is in good agreement with previous results in the literature obtained through other methods. Our results indicate that, at the macroscopic level, the quantum atmosphere behaves like an ordinary thermalised gas at the Hawking temperature.

Fixed points of semi-simple supersymmetric gauge theories

We study fixed points and phase diagrams of semi-simple supersymmetric gauge theories coupled to chiral superfields and a superpotential. Particular emphasis is put on new phenomena which arise due to the semi-simple nature of gauge interactions and the constraints dictated by supersymmetry, unitarity, and the $a$-theorem. Using field multiplicities as free parameters, we find all superconformal fixed points and classify theories according to their phase diagrams. Highlights include asymptotically free theories displaying a range of interacting fixed points in the IR, asymptotically non-free theories that become asymptotically safe due to residual interactions, UV-complete theories with gauge sectors that are simultaneously UV-free and IR-free, and theories that remain interacting both in the asymptotic UV and IR. Estimates for the sizes of conformal windows are also provided, and implications for model building are discussed.

Symmetric Yang--Mills theory in FLRW universes

In this work, we set up the theoretical framework and indicate future applications of symmetric Yang--Mills fields to cosmology. We analyze the coset space dimensional reduction scheme to construct pure Yang--Mills fields on spacetimes given as cylinders over cosets. Particular cases of foliations using $H^n$, dS$_n$ and AdS$_n$ slices as non-compact symmetric spaces are solved, compared to previous results in the literature, and generalized in a structured fashion. Coupling to general relativity in FLRW-type universes is introduced via the cosmological scale factor. For the hyperbolic slicing in 4D, the dynamics of the Einstein--Yang--Mills system is analytically solved and discussed. Finally, we generalize the analysis to warped foliations of the cylinders, which enlarge the range of possible spacetimes while also introducing a Hubble friction-like term in the equation of motion for the Yang--Mills field.
