The Yang-Mills measure on surfaces via Morse theory

We introduce a Morse theoretical approach to the construction of the Yang--Mills measure on the space of connections of a compact Riemannian surface. This provides a direct continuous version of this measure which was previously obtained through lattice approximations by Chevyrev in the case of the flat torus and by one of the authors and Nohra for general compact Riemannian surfaces. The starting point is the new notion of a Morse gauge together with the resolution of random cohomological equations associated to Morse--Smale vector fields. This is achieved by improving exponential convergence to equilibrium results for Morse--Smale gradient flows that were obtained by two of the authors in the context of the study of Ruelle spectra and by Jia, Stewart and Sverak in the context of simplified models from fluid mechanics. Combining these random solutions with the data given by the Morse complex, we introduce a free Yang-Mills measure on space of connections and, using classical tools from stochastic differential equations, we show how to make sense of holonomies for random connections along a large class of curves. Finally, by setting a proper conditioning of this free measure through these random holonomies, we define the Yang--Mills measure and we compute its partition function together with the law of random holonomies with respect to this measure, recovering the formulas from the works of Migdal, Witten and Lévy.

Quantum unique ergodicity for magnetic Laplacians on T^2

Given a smooth integral two-form and a smooth potential on the flat torus of dimension 2, we study the high energy properties of the corresponding magnetic Schrödinger operator. Under a geometric condition on the magnetic field, we show that every sequence of high energy eigenfunctions satisfies the quantum unique ergodicity property even if the Liouville measure is not ergodic for the underlying classical flow (the Euclidean geodesic flow on the 2-torus).

Sobolev instability for perturbations of periodic transport equations

We consider linear and time-dependent perturbations of periodic transport equations on the two-dimensional torus. For generic perturbations, we prove the existence of a large class of initial data whose Sobolev norms diverge exponentially fast. In higher dimensions, this remains true under a Morse-Smale assumption on the resonant part of the perturbation. In both cases, this is achieved by a normal form procedure and by studying Sobolev instabilities for time-dependent perturbations of Morse-Smale transport equations. The latter are analyzed on general compact manifolds using techniques from microlocal analysis and hyperbolic dynamics.

Poincar{é} series for analytic convex bodies

We study Poincar{é} series associated to strictly convex bodies in the Euclidean space. These series are Laplace transforms of the distribution of lengths (measured with the Finsler metric associated to one of the bodies) from one convex body to a lattice. Assuming that the convex bodies have analytic boundaries, we prove that the Poincar{é} series, originally defined in the right complex half-plane, continues holomorphically to a conical neighborhood of this set, removing a countable set of cuts and points. The latter correspond to the spectrum of a dual elliptic operator. We describe singularities of the Poincar{é} series at each of these branching points. One of the steps of the proof consists in showing analytic continuation of the resolvent of multiplication operators by a real-valued analytic Morse function on the sphere as a branched holomorphic function, a result of independent interest.

On the Lebesgue Component of Semiclassical Measures for Abelian Quantum Actions

For a large class of symplectic integer matrices, the action on the torus extends to a symplectic $\mathbb{Z}^r$-action with $r\geq 2$. We apply this to the study of semiclassical measures for joint eigenfunctions of the quantization of the symplectic matrices of the $\mathbb{Z}^r$-action. In the irreducible setting, we prove that the resulting probability measures are convex combinations of the Lebesgue measure with weight $\geq 1/2$ and a zero entropy measure. We also provide a general theorem in the reducible case showing that the Lebesgue components along isotropic and symplectic invariant subtori must have total weight $\geq 1/2$.

Nonlinear chaotic Vlasov equations

In this article, we study nonlinear Vlasov equations with a smooth interaction kernel on a compact manifold without boundary where the geodesic flow exhibits strong chaotic behavior, known as the Anosov property. We show that, for small initial data with finite regularity and supported away from the null section, there exist global solutions to the nonlinear Vlasov equations which weakly converge to an equilibrium of the free transport equation, and whose potential strongly converges to zero, both with exponential speed. Central to our approach are microlocal anisotropic Sobolev spaces, originally developed for studying Pollicott-Ruelle resonances, that we further refine to deal with the geometry of the full cotangent bundle, which paves the way to the analysis of nonlinear Vlasov equations.

Asymptotic regularity of sub-Riemannian eigenfunctions in dimension 3: the periodic case

On the unit tangent bundle of a compact Riemannian surface of constant nonzero curvature, we study semiclassical Schr{ö}dinger operators associated with the natural sub-Riemannian Laplacian built along the horizontal bundle. In that setup , the involved Reeb flow is periodic and we show that high-frequency Schr{ö}dinger eigenfunctions enjoy extra regularity properties. As an application, we derive regularity properties for low-energy eigenmodes of semiclassical magnetic Schr{ö}dinger operators on the underlying surface by considering joint eigenfunctions with the Reeb vector field.

Length orthospectrum of convex bodies on flat tori

In analogy with the study of Pollicott-Ruelle resonances on negatively curved manifolds, we define anisotropic Sobolev spaces that are well-adapted to the analysis of the geodesic vector field associated with any translation invariant Finsler metric on the torus $\mathbb{T}^d$. Among several applications of this functional point of view, we study properties of geodesics that are orthogonal to two convex subsets of $\mathbb{T}^d$ (i.e. projection of the boundaries of strictly convex bodies of $\mathbb{R}^d$). Associated with the set of lengths of such orthogeodesics, we define a geometric Epstein function and prove its meromorphic continuation. We compute its residues in terms of intrinsic volumes of the convex sets. We also prove Poisson-type summation formulae relating the set of lengths of orthogeodesics and the spectrum of magnetic Laplacians.

Quantum limits of perturbed sub-Riemannian contact Laplacians in dimension 3

On the unit tangent bundle of a compact Riemannian surface, we consider a natural sub-Riemannian Laplacian associated with the canonical contact structure. In the large eigenvalue limit, we study the escape of mass at infinity in the cotangent space of eigenfunctions for hypoelliptic selfadjoint perturbations of this operator. Using semiclassical methods, we show that, in this subelliptic regime, eigenfunctions concentrate on certain quantized level sets along the geodesic flow direction and that they verify invariance properties involving both the geodesic vector field and the perturbation term.

Length orthospectrum and the correlation function on flat tori

This note presents some of the results obtained in arXiv:2207.05410 and it has beenthe object of a talk of the second author during the Journées "Équations auxDérivées Partielles" (Obernai, june 2022). We study properties of geodesics that are orthogonal to two convex subsets of the flat torus. We discuss meromorphic properties of a geometric Epstein zeta function associated to the set of lengths of such orthogeodesics. We also define the associated length distribution and discuss singularities of its Fourier transform. Our analysis relies on a fine study of the dynamical correlation function of the geodesic flow on the torus and the definition of anisotropic Sobolev spaces that are well-adapted to this integrable dynamics.

Poincar{é} series and linking of Legendrian knots

On a negatively curved surface, we show that the Poincar{é} series counting geodesic arcs orthogonal to some pair of closed geodesic curves has a meromorphic continuation to the whole complex plane. When both curves are homologically trivial, we prove that the Poincar{é} series has an explicit rational value at 0 interpreting it in terms of linking number of Legendrian knots. In particular, for any pair of points on the surface, the lengths of all geodesic arcs connecting the two points determine its genus, and, for any pair of homologically trivial closed geodesics, the lengths of all geodesic arcs orthogonal to both geodesics determine the linking number of the two geodesics.

Dynamics of nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations in low regularity on S^2

We describe the long time behavior of small non-smooth solutions to the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations on the sphere S^2. More precisely, we prove that the low harmonic energies (also called super-actions) are almost preserved for times of order $ε$^--r , where r >> 1 is an arbitrarily large number and $ε$ << 1 is the norm of the initial datum in the energy space H^1 x L^2. Roughly speaking, it means that, in order to exchange energy, modes have to oscillate at the same frequency. The proof relies on new multilinear estimates on Hamiltonian vector fields to put the system in Birkhoff normal form. They are derived from new probabilistic bounds on products of Laplace eigenfunctions that we obtain using Levy's concentration inequality.

Local $L^p$ norms of Schr{ö}dinger eigenfunctions on $\mathbb{S}^2$

On the canonical $2$-sphere and for Schr{ö}dinger eigenfunctions, we obtain a simple geometric criterion on the potential under which we can improve, near a given point and for every $p\neq 6$, Sogge's estimates by a power of the eigenvalue. This criterion can be formulated in terms of the critical points of the Radon transform of the potential and it is independent of the choice of eigenfunctions.

Semiclassical asymptotics for nonselfadjoint harmonic oscillators

We consider nonselfadjoint perturbations of semiclassical harmonic oscillators. Under appropriate dynamical assumptions, we establish some spectral estimates such as upper bounds on the resolvent near the real axis when no geometric control condition is satisfied.

Fried conjecture in small dimensions

We study the twisted Ruelle zeta function $ζ_X(s)$ for smooth Anosov vector fields $X$ acting on flat vector bundles over smooth compact manifolds. In dimension $3$, we prove Fried conjecture, relating Reidemeister torsion and $ζ_X(0)$. In higher dimensions, we show more generally that $ζ_X(0)$ is locally constant with respect to the vector field $X$ under a spectral condition. As a consequence, we also show Fried conjecture for Anosov flows near the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. This gives the first examples of non-analytic Anosov flows and geodesic flows in variable negative curvature where Fried conjecture holds true.

Semiclassical behaviour of quantum eigenstates

Given a quantum Hamiltonian, we explain how the dynamical properties of the underlying classical system affect the behaviour of quantum eigenstates in the semi-classical limit. We study this problem via the notion of semiclassical measures. We mostly focus on two opposite dynamical paradigms: completely integrable systems and chaotic ones. We recall standard tools from microlocal analysis and from dynamical systems. We show how to use them in order to illustrate the classical-quantum correspondance and to compare properties of completely integrable and chaotic systems.

The quantum Loschmidt echo on flat tori

The Quantum Loschmidt Echo is a measurement of the sensitivity of a quantum system to perturbations of the Hamiltonian. In the case of the standard 2-torus, we derive some explicit formulae for this quantity in the transition regime where it is expected to decay in the semiclassical limit. The expression involves both a two-microlocal defect measure of the initial data and the form of the perturbation. As an application, we exhibit a non-concentration criterium on the sequence of initial data under which one does not observe a macroscopic decay of the Quantum Loschmidt Echo. We also apply our results to several examples of physically relevant initial data such as coherent states and plane waves.

Two-microlocal regularity of quasimodes on the torus

We study the regularity of stationary and time-dependent solutions to strong perturbations of the free Schrödinger equation on two-dimensional flat tori. This is achieved by performing a second microlocalization related to the size of the perturbation and by analysing concentration and nonconcentration properties at this new scale. In particular, we show that sufficiently accurate quasimodes can only concentrate on the set of critical points of the average of the potential along geodesics.
