Degree of $h$-polynomials of edge ideals

In this paper, we investigate the degree of $h$-polynomials of edge ideals of finite simple graphs. In particular, we provide combinatorial formulas for the degree of the $h$-polynomial for various fundamental classes of graphs such as paths, cycles, and bipartite graphs. To the best of our knowledge, this marks the first investigation into the combinatorial interpretation of this algebraic invariant. Additionally, we characterize all connected graphs in which the sum of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the degree of the $h$-polynomial of an edge ideal reaches its maximum value, which is the number of vertices in the graph.

Multi-Rees Algebras of Strongly Stable Ideals

We prove that the multi-Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I_1 \oplus \cdots \oplus I_r)$ of a collection of strongly stable ideals $I_1, \ldots, I_r$ is of fiber type. In particular, we provide a Gröbner basis for its defining ideal as a union of a Gröbner basis for its special fiber and binomial syzygies. We also study the Koszulness of $\mathcal{R}(I_1 \oplus \cdots \oplus I_r)$ based on parameters associated to the collection. Furthermore, we establish a quadratic Gröbner basis of the defining ideal of $\mathcal{R}(I_1 \oplus I_2)$ where each of the strongly stable ideals has two quadric Borel generators. As a consequence, we conclude that this multi-Rees algebra is Koszul.

Detecting Koszulness and related homological properties from the algebra structure of Koszul homology

Let $k$ be a field and $R$ a standard graded $k$-algebra. We denote by $\operatorname{H}^R$ the homology algebra of the Koszul complex on a minimal set of generators of the irrelevant ideal of $R$. We discuss the relationship between the multiplicative structure of $\operatorname{H}^R$ and the property that $R$ is a Koszul algebra. More generally, we work in the setting of local rings and we show that certain conditions on the multiplicative structure of Koszul homology imply strong homological properties, such as existence of certain Golod homomorphisms, leading to explicit computations of Poincaré series. As an application, we show that the Poincaré series of all finitely generated modules over a stretched Cohen-Macaulay local ring are rational, sharing a common denominator.

The Rees algebra of a two-Borel ideal is Koszul

Let $M$ and $N$ be two monomials of the same degree, and let $I$ be the smallest Borel ideal containing $M$ and $N$. We show that the toric ring of $I$ is Koszul by constructing a quadratic Gröbner basis for the associated toric ideal. Our proofs use the construction of graphs corresponding to fibers of the toric map. As a consequence, we conclude that the Rees algebra is also Koszul.

Betti numbers of piecewiselex ideals

We extend a result of Caviglia and Sbarra to a polynomial ring with base field of any characteristic. Given a homogeneous ideal containing both a piecewise lex ideal and an ideal generated by powers of the variables, we find a lex ideal with the following property: the ideal in the polynomial ring generated by the piecewise lex ideal, the ideal of powers, and the lex ideal has the same Hilbert function and Betti numbers at least as large as those of the original ideal.

Distinct monomial orders with same induced orderings

We prove that the lexicographic, degree lexicographic and the degree reverse lexicographic orders for monomials in $R_n=K[X_1,...X_n]$ are uniquely determined by their induced orderings, (i.e. their restrictions to $R_{n,i}=K[X_1,..., \hat{X_i}, .., X_n]$), when $n \geq 4$. We also show that for any $n \geq 4$ there are monomial orders that are not uniquely determined by their induced orderings, and provide examples of these orders for each $n$.

On the Koszulness of multi-Rees algebras of certain strongly stable ideals

Generalizing techniques that prove that Veronese subrings are Koszul, we show that Rees and multi-Rees algebras of certain types of principal strongly stable ideals are Koszul. We provide explicit Gröbner basis for the defining ideals of these multi-Rees algebras with squarefree initial monomials, to show that they are also normal Cohen-Macaulay domains.
