Long Baseline Neutrino Experiments and the LOW solution -- What is Left to Do and How Well Can It Be Done

The neutrino community is convinced that if the LMA solution is indeed correct, the prospects for next-generation, long-baseline neutrino experiments are very exciting. In this work we will argue that the prospects are not less exiting if the answer to the solar neutrino puzzle lies in the LOW region. For this purpose we explore the oscillation probabilities which are accessible to experiments which employ conventional neutrino beams. We consider the electron (anti)neutrino appearance channel, which provides information regarding not only the small $U_{e3}$-element of the leptonic mixing matrix but also the neutrino mass hierarchy, and also include information, which should come from the muon (anti)neutrino disappearance channel, regarding the magnitude of the atmospheric mass-squared difference ($|Δm^2_{13}|$) and mixing angle ($θ_{23}$). We comment on the presence of ambiguities and the experiments needed to solve them.

Neutrino Oscillations with a Proton Driver Upgrade and an Off-Axis Detector: A Case Study

We study the physics capabilities of the NuMI beamline with an off-axis highly-segmented iron scintillator detector and with the inclusion of the currently under study proton driver upgrade. We focus on the prospects for the experimental determination of the remaining neutrino oscillation parameters, assuming different outcomes for experiments under way or in preparation. An optimization of the beam conditions and detector location for the detection of the nu_mu to nu_e transitions is discussed. Different physics scenarios were considered, depending on the actual solution of the solar neutrino puzzle. If KamLAND measures Delta m^2_solar, we find it possible to measure both |U_{e3}|^2 and the CP violating phase delta within a viable exposure time, assuming a realistic detector and a complete data analysis. Exposure to both neutrino and antineutrino beams is necessary. We can, in addition, shed light on Delta m^2_solar if its value is at the upper limit of KamLAND sensitivity (i.e. the precise value of Delta m^2_solar remains unknown even after KamLAND). If the solar neutrino solution is not in the LMA region, we can measure |U_{e3}|^2 and determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. The existence of the proton driver is vital for the feasibility of most of these measurements.

Higgs Sector of the Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model

We perform an exhaustive analysis of the most general Higgs sector of the minimal left-right symmetric model (MLRM). We find that the CP properties of the vacuum state are connected to the Higgs spectrum: if CP is broken spontaneously, the MLRM does not approach the Standard Model in the limit of a decoupling left-right symmetry breaking scale. Depending on the size of the CP phases scenarios with extra non-decoupling flavor-violating doublet Higgses or very light SU(2) triplet Higgses emerge, both of which are ruled out by phenomenology. For zero CP phases the non-standard Higgses decouple only if a very unnatural fine-tuning condition is fulfilled. We also discuss generalizations to a non-minimal Higgs sector.

Neutrino Masses and Lepton Flavour Violation in Thick Brane Scenarios

We address the issue of lepton flavour violation and neutrino masses in the ``fat-brane'' paradigm, where flavour changing processes are suppressed by localising different fermion field wave-functions at different positions (in the extra dimensions) in a thick brane. We study the consequences of suppressing lepton number violating charged lepton decays within this scenario for lepton masses and mixing angles. In particular, we find that charged lepton mass matrices are constrained to be quasi-diagonal. We further consider whether the same paradigm can be used to naturally explain small Dirac neutrino masses by considering the existence of three right-handed neutrinos in the brane, and discuss the requirements to obtain phenomenologically viable neutrino masses and mixing angles. Finally, we examine models where neutrinos obtain a small Majorana mass by breaking lepton number in a far away brane and show that, if the fat-brane paradigm is the solution to the absence of lepton number violating charged lepton decays, such models predict, in the absence of flavour symmetries, that charged lepton flavour violation will be observed in the next round of rare muon/tau decay experiments.

Constraining New Physics with the CDF Measurement of CP Violation in $B \to ψK_S$

Recently, the CDF collaboration has reported a measurement of the CP asymmetry in the $B\toψK_S$ decay: $a_{ψK_S}=0.79^{+0.41}_{-0.44}$. We analyze the constraints that follow from this measurement on the size and the phase of contributions from new physics to $B-\barB$ mixing. Defining the relative phase between the full $M_{12}$ amplitude and the Standard Model contribution to be $2θ_d$, we find a new bound: $\sin2θ_d\gsim-0.6 (-0.87)$ at one sigma (95% CL). Further implications for the CP asymmetry in semileptonic B decays are discussed.

Neutrino mixing and masses from long baseline and atmospheric oscillation experiments

We argue that regardless of the outcome of future Long Baseline experiments, additional information will be needed to unambiguously decide among the different scenarios of neutrino mixing. We use, for this purpose, a simple test of underground data: an asymmetry between downward and upward going events. Such an asymmetry, in which matter effects can be crucial, tests electron and muon neutrino data separately and can be compared with the theoretical prediction without relying on any simulation program.

CP violating lepton asymmetries in Left-Right Models

Lepton charge asymmetries can be used as an alternative means of searching for new physics. They are interesting because they are small in the Standard Model and therefore, necessarily evidence new physics. In this work we explore the use of lepton asymmetries as a probe of the flavour structure of the left-right symmetric model with spontaneous CP violation. We find that new physics may enhance the magnitude of $a_{SL}$ up to the precent level within the appropiate parameter space.

Only Three

It is shown that it is possible to account for all experimental indications for neutrino oscillations with just three flavours. In particular we suggest that the atmospheric neutrino anomaly and the LSND result can be explained by the same mass difference and mixing. Possible implications and future tests of the resulting mass and mixing pattern are given.

Electroweak Phase Transitions in left-right symmetric models

We study the finite-temperature effective potential of minimal left-right symmetric models containing a bidoublet and two triplets in the scalar sector. We perform a numerical analysis of the parameter space compatible with the requirement that baryon asymmetry is not washed out by sphaleron processes after the electroweak phase transition. We find that the spectrum of scalar particles for these acceptable cases is consistent with present experimental bounds.
