A unique coupling of the massive spin-2 field to supergravity

We show that the coupling of a massive spin-2 field to undeformed N=1 supergravity in four dimensions is unique, leading to a specific non-minimal coupling to the Riemann tensor. The massive spin-2 coupling reproduces the one of an oscillator mode in open string theory, while the massive spin-1 coupling includes a higher-derivative term that is expected to violate causality in the background of a gravitational shock wave. We argue that the resolution of causality and the unitarity bound in the Regge limit require the introduction of infinitely many higher-spin fields similar to the Regge trajectories in string theory, therefore providing an argument in favour of the string lamppost principle with minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions. To obtain this result, we construct the general stress-energy tensor multiplet for the massive spin-2 multiplet with N=1 supersymmetry.

Taxonomy of type II orientifold flux vacua in 3D

We complete the study initiated in \cite{Arboleya:2024vnp} and investigate three-dimensional (3D) flux vacua of type II orientifold reductions on twisted tori that include a single type of spacetime-filling O$p$-plane with $\,p=2,\ldots,9$. Restricting to $\textrm{SO}(3)$-invariant setups -- also known as RSTU-models -- and setting axions to zero, we exhaustively chart the landscape of 3D orientifold flux vacua. It consists of $\,56\,$ inequivalent multi-parametric families of AdS$_3$ and Mkw$_3$ flux vacua, all of them without negative masses in the spectrum of scalar fluctuations. Performing T-dualities, all the inequivalent vacua can be found in type IIB with either O9-, O5- or O3-planes. We show that: $i)\,$ type IIB with O$9$ fails to stabilise the volume of the internal space. $ii)\,$ type IIB with O5 realises the only cases of scale-separated AdS$_{3}$ vacua. $iii)\,$ type IIB with O$3$ provides only Mkw$_{3}$ vacua exhibiting a rich variety of supersymmetry-breaking patterns. Assuming that some mechanism (possibly non-perturbative) fixes the unstabilised modulus in type IIB with O$9$, we re-examine the possibility of achieving a weakly-coupled and scale-separated regime.

Linear and nonlinear supersymmetry in field and string theory

This Ph.D. thesis investigates effective field and string theories in which supersymmetry is realized and broken in various ways. Chapter 1 addresses effective theories with nonlinearly realized supersymmetry, constructed using the formalism of constrained superfields. We establish a criterion for identifying inconsistent constraints, formulate their improved versions, and propose, along these lines, improved supergravity models of inflation. In Chapter 2, we discuss a peculiar application of this framework: the gravitational production of massive gravitinos in time-dependent backgrounds. We emphasize some physical subtleties in the standard description of this mechanism, which become particularly severe in the case of the gravitino. Next, the focus shifts to linear supersymmetry, and we investigate the leading-order coupling of the massive spin-2 field supermultiplet to pure supergravity in four dimensions. This analysis is carried out using the supercurrent superfield formalism, and it shows that only a single class of such couplings can be consistently defined. This is fundamentally distinct from the coupling obtained by compactifying higher-dimensional supergravities, and it has interesting connections to string theory and the string lamppost principle. Finally, in Chapter 3, we present a novel orientifold projection of type IIB string theory. This is a Scherk--Schwarz orientifold in which supersymmetry is entirely broken, and the O-planes couple only to the twisted sector of the theory. We argue that this model is invariant under S-duality and can be formulated as an F-theory compactification. We also analyze the D-brane spectrum of the theory and compare the results with earlier similar constructions. All original findings presented in this thesis are preceded by a comprehensive and detailed introduction to the general frameworks to which they belong.

Twisted Orientifold planes and S-duality without supersymmetry

We construct a novel orientifold of type IIB string theory that breaks all supersymmetries. It is a closed string theory without open sector and it can be understood as a Scherk-Schwarz deformation in which supersymmetry is restored at infinite radius. We conjecture that it is realised in F-theory as a compactification on a freely acting orbifold that acts as the reflection on the elliptic fibre. The SL(2,Z) selfduality is manifest in the F-theory formulation. We construct explicitly the D-branes in this model and find that stable D-branes match the geometric prediction in M-theory. This theory has the salient feature that the O-planes couple only to the massive twisted states of the theory. We call them twisted O-planes. We describe supersymmetric examples of such twisted O-planes and argue that they are similar in nature to combinations of O+ and O- planes with vanishing total charge.

On energy and particle production in cosmology: the particular case of the gravitino

It is well-known that the number of particles produced in cosmology, commonly defined in the literature from the Fock space of the instantaneous hamiltonian of the canonically normalized fields, is ambiguous. On the other hand, the energy computed from the energy-momentum tensor should be physical. We compare the corresponding Fock spaces and relate them through a Bogolyubov transformation. We find that for particles of spin $0$, $1$ and $3/2$ the two Fock spaces are different, whereas they are the same for spin $1/2$ fermions. For spin $0$ and $1$, for particles of high momenta the two Fock spaces align, as intuitively expected. For the spin $3/2$, one finds two puzzles. The first one is that the two corresponding Fock spaces do not match even in the limit of high momenta. The second is that whereas we provide evidence for the equivalence theorem between longitudinal gravitinos and the goldstino in terms of an exact matching between the lagrangians and the instantaneous hamiltonians for the canonically normalized fields, the energy operator computed from the Rarita--Schwinger action does not seem to be captured in a simple way by the goldstino action. Our results suggest a re-analysis of non-thermal gravitino production in cosmology.

Causality constraints on nonlinear supersymmetry

It is well-known that gravitino propagation in standard supergravities is free of any causality problems. However, two issues related to gravitino propagation were recently uncovered in specific supergravities with nonlinear supersymmetry. One of them concerns potential acausality/superluminality, whereas the second one arises from the vanishing of the sound speed at specific points during inflation. The former is famously related to positivity constraints on specific EFT operators, derived from dispersion relations on the energy-growing part of scattering amplitudes, and indeed we show that subluminality constraints for the gravitino are related via the equivalence theorem to positivity bounds in low-energy goldstino actions. However, the former are stronger, in the sense that they apply to functions of the scalar fields not only in the ground state, but for any field values such as those scanned by time-dependent solutions, unlike bounds derived from $2\to 2$ scattering amplitudes in the vacuum. We also argue that nontrivial causality constraints arise only in the case where nonlinear supersymmetry in the matter sector is encoded into superfield constraints which do not seem to arise from microscopic two-derivative lagrangians, in particular for the orthogonal constraint used to build minimal models of inflation in supergravity. This allows us to propose simple alternatives which maintain the minimality of the spectra and are causal in all points of the theory parameter space. We also discuss minimal supergravity models of inflation along these lines.
