Generating green to red light with semiconductor lasers

Diode lasers enable one to continuously cover the 730 to 1100 nm range as well as the 370 to 550 nm range by frequency doubling, but a large part of the electro-magnetic spectrum spanning from green to red remains accessible only through expensive and unpractical optically pumped dye lasers. Here we devise a method to multiply the frequency of optical waves by a factor 3/2 with a conversion that is phase-coherent and highly efficient. Together with harmonic generation, it will enable one to cover the visible spectrum with semiconductor lasers, opening new avenues in important fields such as laser spectroscopy and optical metrology.

Cavity-enhanced single frequency synthesis via DFG of mode-locked pulse trains

We show how to synthesize a CW, single-frequency optical field from the frequency-dispersed, pulsed field of a mode-locked laser. This process, which relies on difference frequency generation in an optical cavity, is efficient and can be considered as an optical rectification. Quantitative estimates for the output power and amplitude noise properties of a realistic system are given. Possible applications to optical frequency synthesis and optical metrology are envisaged.

Dynamic structure factor of a superfluid Fermi gas

We describe the excitation spectrum of a two-component neutral Fermi gas in the superfluid phase at finite temperature by deriving a suitable Random-Phase approximation with the technique of functional derivatives. The obtained spectrum for the homogeneous gas at small wavevectors contains the Bogoliubov-Anderson phonon and is essentially different from the spectrum predicted by the static Bogoliubov theory, which instead shows an unphysically large response. We adapt the results for the homogeneous system to obtain the dynamic structure factor of a harmonically confined superfluid and we identify in the spectrum a unique feature of the superfluid phase.

Collision-assisted Zeeman cooling of neutral atoms

We propose a new method to cool gaseous samples of neutral atoms. The gas is confined in a non dissipative optical trap in the presence of an homogeneous magnetic field. The method accumulates atoms in the $m_F=0$ Zeeman sub-level. Cooling occurs via collisions that produce atoms in $m_F\neq 0$ states. Thanks to the second order Zeeman effect kinetic energy is transformed into internal energy and recycling of atoms is ensured by optical pumping. This method may allow quantum degeneracy to be reached by purely optical means.

Simultaneous Magneto-Optical Trapping of Two Lithium Isotopes

We confine 4 10^8 fermionic 6Li atoms simultaneously with 9 10^9 bosonic 7Li atoms in a magneto-optical trap based on an all-semiconductor laser system. We optimize the two-isotope sample for sympathetic evaporative cooling. This is an essential step towards the production of a quantum-degenerate gas of fermionic lithium atoms.

Collisional relaxation in a fermionic gas

We propose a method to study the degeneracy of a trapped atomic gas of fermions through the relaxation of the motion of a test particle. In the degenerate regime, and for an energy of the test particle well below the Fermi energy, we show that the Fermi-Dirac statistics is responsible for a strong decrease of the relaxation rate. This method can be used to directly measure the temperature of the fermionic gas.
