Bounds on scattering amplitudes of non-identical scalar particles in 4d

We initiate the study of two-to-two scattering amplitudes involving two distinct scalar particles in $d = 4$ spacetime dimensions using the primal S-matrix bootstrap. We impose a $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ global symmetry under which the two particles are the lightest ones carrying charges $(-,+)$ and $(+,-)$, guaranteeing their absolute stability and absence of triangular anomalous thresholds. For unequal masses, the presence of a pseudo-physical cut whose discontinuity is not directly constrained by physical unitarity qualitatively changes the bootstrap problem. We find several observables to be unbounded, while others obey non-trivial one-sided bounds or become bounded once another observable is fixed. In the equal-mass limit, where the pseudo-physical region disappears, two-sided bounds are recovered. As a proof of concept, we show that supplying information about the pseudo-physical discontinuity through an Omn\`es parametrisation also restores boundedness. Our results provide a starting point for future studies of physical processes such as pion-kaon and pion-nucleon scattering.

Composite ALPs in Composite Higgs Models

We study the effective Lagrangian for the Axion-Like Particle (ALP) arising in a class of composite Higgs models. We discuss the peculiarities of the coupling to the quark sector specific of these models, including flavor violating terms. We then confront the main bounds from rare B-meson decays.

Vector-like quarks: status and new directions at the LHC

Experimental searches for vector-like quarks have until now only considered their decays into Standard Model particles. However, various new physics scenarios predict additional scalars, so that these vector-like quarks can decay to new channels. These new channels reduce the branching ratios into Standard Model final states, significantly affecting current mass bounds. In this article, we quantitatively assess the relevance and observability of single and pair production processes of vector-like quarks, followed by decays into both standard and exotic final states. We highlight the importance of large widths and the relative interaction strengths with Standard Model particles and new scalars. Then, we review the post-Moriond 2024 status of these models in light of available LHC data and discuss potential future strategies to enhance the scope of vector-like quark searches.

Vacuum misalignment in presence of four-Fermi operators

We consider the issue of vacuum misalignment induced by four-Fermi couplings in a generic strongly coupled four-dimensional gauge theory. After briefly reviewing the general formalism, we focus on the case of partial compositness-like operators at leading order, which is relevant in applications to phenomenology. We show that the interactions between an elementary fermion and composite spin-1/2 operators in various representations contribute to the effective potential with relative sign differences. Thus the correct sign required to misalign the vacuum is guaranteed to occur for some representations but not all of them. The overall sign dictating the specific representations responsible for misalignment can in principle be determined on the lattice. We also comment on the likely sign for some simple cases.

Phenomenological aspects of composite Higgs scenarios: exotic scalars and vector-like quarks

Composite Higgs models usually contain additional pseudo Nambu Goldstone bosons and vector-like quarks. We discuss various aspects related to their LHC phenomenology and provide summary plots of exclusion limits using currently available information. We also describe a general parametrisation implemented in a software for Monte Carlo simulations and study the SU(5)/SO(5) scenario as a concrete example.

Modelling vector-like quarks in partial compositeness framework

Composite Higgs models, together with partial compositeness, predict the existence of new scalars and vector-like quarks (partners) at and above the TeV scale. Generically, the presence of these additional scalars opens up new decay topologies for the partners. In this paper we show how to systematically construct the general low energy Lagrangian to capture this feature. We emphasize the specific pattern in the top-partner spectrum arising in this class of models. We then present a concrete realization in the context of the SU(5)/SO(5) coset. We show that the top-partners in this model can have significant branching ratios to the additional scalars and a third generation quark, compared to the usual Standard Model channels. Amongst the most promising signatures at the LHC are final states containing a diphoton resonance along with a top quark.

Unleashing the full power of LHCb to probe Stealth New Physics

In this paper, we describe the potential of the LHCb experiment to detect Stealth physics. This refers to dynamics beyond the Standard Model that would elude searches that focus on energetic objects or precision measurements of known processes. Stealth signatures include long-lived particles and light resonances that are produced very rarely or together with overwhelming backgrounds. We will discuss why LHCb is equipped to discover this kind of physics at the Large Hadron Collider and provide examples of well-motivated theoretical models that can be probed with great detail at the experiment.

Exploring new possibilities to discover a light pseudo-scalar at LHCb

We study the possibility of observing a light pseudo-scalar $a$ at LHCb. We target the mass region $1 \lesssim m_a \lesssim 60$ GeV and various decay channels, some of which have never been considered before: muon pairs, tau pairs, $D$ meson pairs, and di-photon. We interpret the results in the context of models of 4D Composite Higgs and Partial Compositeness in particular.

Electroweak signatures of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking in multiple hidden sectors

This paper discusses electroweak collider signatures of the NMSSM with multiple-sector gauge mediation. We focus on the production of neutralinos and charginos which cascade decay into standard model particles and lighter supersymmetric particles, with special emphasis on final states with multiple photons. A search strategy for signatures with at least three photons is presented and compared with current exclusion limits based on two-photon searches. We show that in many regions of the parameter space our strategy gives stronger constraints than the existing two-photon analysis for these models.

Pseudoscalar pair production via off-shell Higgs in composite Higgs models

We propose a new type of search for a pseudoscalar particle $η$ pair produced via an off-shell Higgs, $pp\to h^*\to ηη$. The search is motivated by a composite Higgs model in which the $η$ is extremely narrow and decays almost exclusively into $Zγ$ in the mass range $65$ GeV$\lesssim m_η\lesssim 160$ GeV. We devise an analysis strategy to observe the novel $ZγZγ$ channel and estimate potential bounds on the Higgs-$η$ coupling. The experimental sensitivity to the signatures depends on the power to identify fake photons and on the ability to predict large photon multiplicities. This search allows us to exclude large values of the compositeness scale $f$, being thus complementary to other typical processes.

Signatures of vector-like top partners decaying into new neutral scalar or pseudoscalar bosons

We explore the phenomenology of models containing one Vector-Like Quark (VLQ), $t'$, which can decay into the Standard Model (SM) top quark, $t$, and a new spin-0 neutral boson, $S$, the latter being either a scalar or pseudoscalar state. We parametrise the underlying interactions in terms of a simplified model which enables us to capture possible Beyond the SM (BSM) scenarios. We discuss in particular three such scenarios: one where the SM state is supplemented by an additional scalar, one which builds upon a 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) framework and another which realises a Composite Higgs Model (CHM) through partial compositeness. Such exotic decays of the $t'$ can be competitive with decays into SM particles, leading to new possible discovery channels at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Assuming $t'$ pair production via strong interactions, we design signal regions optimised for one $t'\rightarrow S t$ transition (while being inclusive on the other \bar{t'} decay, and vice versa), followed by the decay of $S$ into the two very clean experimental signatures $S\rightarrow γγ$ and $S\rightarrow Z(\rightarrow \ell^+\ell^-)γ$. We perform a dedicated signal-to-background analysis in both channels, by using Monte Carlo (MC) event simulations modelling the dynamics from the proton-proton to the detector level. Under the assumption of BR$(t' \rightarrow S t) = 100\%$, we are therefore able to realistically quantify the sensitivity of the LHC to both the $t'$ and $S$ masses, assuming both current and foreseen luminosities. This approach paves the way for the LHC experiments to surpass current VLQ search strategies based solely on $t'$ decays into SM bosons ($W^\pm, Z$, $h$).

Anomalous dimensions of potential top-partners

We discuss anomalous dimensions of top-partner candidates in theories of Partial Compositeness. First, we revisit, confirm and extend the computation by DeGrand and Shamir of anomalous dimensions of fermionic trilinears. We present general results applicable to all matter representations and to composite operators of any allowed spin. We then ask the question of whether it is reasonable to expect some models to have composite operators of sufficiently large anomalous dimension to serve as top-partners. While this question can be answered conclusively only by lattice gauge theory, within perturbation theory we find that such values could well occur for some specific models. In the Appendix we collect a number of practical group theory results for fourth-order invariants of general interest in gauge theories with many irreducible representations of fermions.

Revealing timid pseudo-scalars with taus at the LHC

A light pseudo-scalar that is copiously produced at the LHC may still be allowed by present searches. While masses above 65 GeV are effectively covered by di-photon searches, the lower mass window can be tested by a new search for boosted di-tau resonances. We test this strategy on a set of composite Higgs models with top partial compositeness, where most models can be probed with an integrated luminosity below 300 fb$^{-1}$.

Jet-associated resonance spectroscopy

We present a model-independent study aimed at characterizing the nature of possible resonances in the jet-photon or jet-$Z$ final state at hadron colliders. Such resonances are expected in many models of compositeness and would be a clear indication of new physics. At leading order, in the narrow width approximation, the matrix elements are parameterized by just a few constants describing the coupling of the various helicities to the resonance. We present the full structure of such amplitudes up to spin two and use them to simulate relevant kinematic distributions that could serve to constrain the coupling structure. This also generalizes the signal generation strategy that is currently pursued by ATLAS and CMS to the most general case in the considered channels. While the determination of the P/CP properties of the interaction seems to be out of reach within this framework, there is a wealth of information to be gained about the spin of the resonance and the relative couplings of the helicities.

Di-boson signatures as Standard Candles for Partial Compositeness

Composite Higgs Models are often constructed including fermionic top partners with a mass around the TeV scale, with the top partners playing the role of stabilizing the Higgs potential and enforcing partial compositeness for the top quark. A class of models of this kind can be formulated in terms of fermionic strongly coupled gauge theories. A common feature they all share is the presence of specific additional scalar resonances, namely two neutral singlets and a colored octet, described by a simple effective Lagrangian. We study the phenomenology of these scalars, both in a model independent and model dependent way, including the bounds from all the available searches in the relevant channels with di-boson and di-top final states. We develop a generic framework which can be used to constrain any model containing pseudo-scalar singlets or octets. Using it, we find that such signatures provide strong bounds on the compositeness scale complementary to the traditional EWPT and Higgs couplings deviations. In many cases a relatively light scalar can be on the verge of discovery as a first sign of new physics.

Baryon number violation in supersymmetry: Neutron-antineutron oscillations as a probe beyond the LHC

We summarize the current status of baryon number violation in supersymmetry and provide prospects for going beyond the present reach by means of a new search for neutron-antineutron oscillations. The main motivation is the recently proposed neutron-antineutron oscillation experiment at the European Spallation Source in Lund, Sweden, which is projected to be able to improve the current bound on the transition probability in the quasi-free regime by three orders of magnitude. We consider various processes involving superpartners that give rise to neutron-antineutron oscillations and extract the corresponding simplified models, including only the most relevant superpartners and couplings. In terms of these models we recast and determine the exclusion limits from LHC searches as well as from searches for flavor transitions, CP violation and di-nucleon decays. We find that, for certain regions of the parameter space, the proposed neutron-antineutron experiment has a reach that goes beyond all other experiments, as it can probe gluino and squark masses in the multi-TeV range.
