A2255: the First Detection of Filamentary Polarized Emission in a Radio Halo

A deep radio observation of the A2255 cluster of galaxies has been carried out at 1.4 GHz with the Very Large Array synthesis telescope. Thanks to the excellent (u,v) coverage and sensitivity achieved by our observation, the low brightness diffuse extended sources in the cluster (radio halo and relic) have been imaged with unprecedented resolution and dynamic range. We find that the radio halo has filamentary structures that are strongly polarized. The fractional linear polarization reaches levels of $\simeq$ 20$-$40% and the magnetic fields appear ordered on scales of $\sim$400 kpc. This is the first successful attempt to detect polarized emission from a radio halo and provides strong evidence that in this cluster the magnetic field is ordered on large scales.

Observational Properties of Jets in Active Galactic Nuclei

Parsec scale jet properties are shortly presented and discussed. Observational data are used to derive constraints on the jet velocity and orientation, the presence of velocity structures, and the connection between the pc and kpc scale. Two peculiar sources with limb-brightened jets: 1144+35 and Mkn 501 are discussed in detail.

Confirmation of non-thermal hard X-ray excess in the Coma cluster from two epoch observations

We report the hard X-ray spectrum of the Coma cluster obtained using the PDS data of two independent BeppoSAX observations performed with a time interval of about three years. In both the spectra a non thermal excess with respect to the thermal emission is present at a confidence level of ~ 3.4 sigma. The combined spectrum obtained by adding up the two spectra allows a measurement of the excess at the level of ~ 4.8 sigma at energies above 20 keV. The analysis of the full BeppoSAX data set provides a revised non-thermal X-ray flux which is slightly lower than that previously estimated (Fusco-Femiano et al. 1999) and in agreement with that measured by two RXTE observations. The analysis of the offset fields in our Coma observations provides a possible flux determination of the BL Lac object 1ES 1255+244.

The inner kiloparsec of the jet in 3C264

We present new multi-frequency EVN, MERLIN and VLA observations of the radio source 3C264, sensitive to linear scales ranging from the parsec to several kiloparsecs. The observations confirm the existence of regions with different properties in the first kiloparsec of the jet. The most remarkable feature is the transition between a well collimated narrow jet at distances from the core below 80 pc, to a conical-shaped wide jet, with an opening angle of 20 degrees. Another change of properties, consisting of an apparent deflection of the jet ridge line and a diminution of the surface brightness, occurs at a distance of 300 pc from the core, coincident with the radius of a ring observed at optical wavelengths. Our observations add new pieces of information on the spectrum of the radio-optical jet of 3C264, with results consistent with a synchrotron emission mechanism and a spectrum break frequency in the infrared. Brightness profiles taken perpendicularly to the jet of 3C264 are consistent with a spine brightened jet at distances below 100 pc from the core, and an edge-brightened jet beyond, which can be interpreted as evidence of a transverse jet velocity structure. Our observations do not allow us to distinguish between the presence of a face--on dust and gas disk at the center of the host galaxy of 3C264, or rather an evacuated bubble. However, the properties of the jet structure, the changes in the polarization angle, and the plausible jet orientation can be naturally brought into agreement in the bubble scenario.

The Radio Jet Velocities at High Resolution

The different methods to derive the jet velocity and orientation on the parsec scale are presented. From these methods I will discuss the velocity distribution of parsec scale jets and the possible presence of acceleration or deceleration in the jet velocity. Moreover, evidences of jet velocity structures will be reported. Finally I will present new data on the superluminal giant radio source 1144+35 to discuss in detail the properties of pc scale jets.

Radio Halos and Relics in Clusters of Galaxies and Detection Statistics

New sensitive VLA observations confirm the existence of halo and relic sources in 6 Abell clusters where a diffuse emission was found in the NVSS. We find evidence that the frequency of clusters with halos and relics is larger in clusters with high X-ray luminosity. The evidence that the occurrence of a halo source is larger at high redshifts is marginal.
