PDDL Axioms Are Equivalent to Least Fixed Point Logic (Extended Version)

Axioms are a feature of the Planning Domain Definition Language PDDL that can be considered as a generalization of database query languages such as Datalog. The PDDL standard restricts negative occurrences of predicates in axiom bodies to predicates that are directly set by actions and not derived by axioms. In the literature, authors often deviate from this limitation and only require that the set of axioms is stratifiable. We show that both variants can express exactly the same queries as least fixed point logic. They are thus strictly more expressive than stratified Datalog, which aligns with another restriction on axioms occasionally considered in the planning literature. Complementing this theoretical analysis, we also present a compilation that eliminates negative occurrences of derived predicates from PDDL axioms.

Automated planning with ontologies under coherence update semantics (Extended Version)

Standard automated planning employs first-order formulas under closed-world semantics to achieve a goal with a given set of actions from an initial state. We follow a line of research that aims to incorporate background knowledge into automated planning problems, for example, by means of ontologies, which are usually interpreted under open-world semantics. We present a new approach for planning with DL-Lite ontologies that combines the advantages of ontology-based action conditions provided by explicit-input knowledge and action bases (eKABs) and ontology-aware action effects under the coherence update semantics. We show that the complexity of the resulting formalism is not higher than that of previous approaches and provide an implementation via a polynomial compilation into classical planning. An evaluation of existing and new benchmarks examines the performance of a planning system on different variants of our compilation.

Pseudo-Boolean Proof Logging for Optimal Classical Planning

We introduce lower-bound certificates for classical planning tasks, which can be used to prove the unsolvability of a task or the optimality of a plan in a way that can be verified by an independent third party. We describe a general framework for generating lower-bound certificates based on pseudo-Boolean constraints, which is agnostic to the planning algorithm used. As a case study, we show how to modify the $A^{*}$ algorithm to produce proofs of optimality with modest overhead, using pattern database heuristics and $h^\textit{max}$ as concrete examples. The same proof logging approach works for any heuristic whose inferences can be efficiently expressed as reasoning over pseudo-Boolean constraints.
