Superform Approach to Equivariant Localization in Supergravity

We identify a superspace mechanism behind equivariant localization in supergravity. We show that closed superforms generate, on supersymmetric backgrounds, equivariantly closed polyforms. After presenting the general mechanism, we construct such polyforms for vector and linear multiplets, and for chiral and BF action principles, in off-shell $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ conformal supergravity, reproducing and extending recent results. Our construction provides a geometric first step toward equivariant localization of BPS observables in supergravity, including higher-derivative theories, and holography.

The classical Yangian symmetry of Auxiliary Field Sigma Models

Integrable field theories exhibit infinitely many symmetries which underlie their solvability, but the structure of these symmetries can become obscured after performing an integrable deformation such as $\TT$ or an auxiliary field deformation. In this paper, we present a systematic organizing principle for understanding deformed charges and their Yangian structure in a broad class of integrable sigma models and their auxiliary field deformations. We generalize the recursive procedure of Brezin, Itzykson, Zinn-Justin, and Zuber (BIZZ) for generating non-local charges, and give sufficient conditions under which the resulting charges obey a Yangian algebra. We apply these results to many examples of integrable sigma models and their auxiliary field deformations, finding a Yangian algebra and Maillet bracket structure in all cases. This offers a unified explanation for the persistence of Hamiltonian integrability and Yangian symmetry across a wide landscape of deformed sigma models.

Relating auxiliary field formulations of $4d$ duality-invariant and $2d$ integrable field theories

Auxiliary field techniques have recently gained interest in four-dimensional non-linear electrodynamics and two-dimensional integrable sigma models. In these settings, coupling a suitable ``seed'' theory to auxiliary fields provides a powerful mechanism to generate infinite families of models while preserving key dynamical properties, such as electromagnetic duality invariance in four dimensions and classical integrability in two dimensions. Deformations induced through auxiliary fields are closely related to $T\bar{T}$-like deformations and, in two dimensions, also to their higher-spin generalisations. In this paper, we analyse and clarify the relations between different auxiliary field formulations in two and four dimensions, showing how they are governed by Legendre transformations of the interaction functions combined with appropriate field redefinitions. In four-dimensional electrodynamics, we establish a correspondence between the auxiliary field model of Russo and Townsend and the Ivanov--Zupnik formalism. In two dimensions, we develop the analogue of the Ivanov--Zupnik $μ$-frame to deform Principal Chiral, symmetric-space, non-Abelian T-dual, and (bi-)Yang-Baxter sigma models. We discuss how integrability is preserved and use properties of the $μ$-frame to further extend known families of integrable deformations.

Holographic origin of $a$-maximization and higher-derivative AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$

We develop a consistent partially off-shell framework for evaluating higher-derivative actions of five-dimensional $\cal{N}=1$ gauged supergravity with abelian vector multiplets on AdS$_5$. Using the superconformal formalism, we show that the resulting holographic expression reproduces the trial $a$-anomaly coefficient of the dual conformal field theory, identifying the supergravity equations of motion with $a$-maximization. We present an exact correspondence between Chern-Simons couplings and the anomaly polynomial of the boundary theory. We illustrate our proposal by applying it to all known two- and four-derivative actions, including the ``off-diagonal'' invariants never before considered in the gauged supergravity literature. Finally, we argue that all invariants beyond four-derivative yield no genuinely new contributions to asymptotically AdS$_5$ BPS backgrounds, but instead reduce to linear combinations of the established two- and four-derivative actions.

Soliton Surfaces and the Geometry of Integrable Deformations of the $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ Model

The $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model is an analytically tractable $2d$ quantum field theory which shares several properties with $4d$ Yang-Mills theory. By virtue of its classical integrability, this model also admits a family of integrable higher-spin auxiliary field deformations, including the $T \overline{T}$ deformation as a special case. We study the $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model and its deformations from a geometrical perspective, constructing their soliton surfaces and recasting physical properties of these theories as statements about surface geometry. We examine how the $T \overline{T}$ flow affects the unit constraint in the $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model and prove that any solution of this theory with vanishing energy-momentum tensor remains a solution under analytic stress tensor deformations -- an argument that extends to generic dimensions and instanton-like solutions in stress tensor flows including the non-analytic, $2d$, root-$T \overline{T}$ case and classes of higher-spin, Smirnov-Zamolodchikov-type, deformations. Finally, we give two geometric interpretations for general $T \overline{T}$-like deformations of symmetric space sigma models, showing that such flows can be viewed as coupling the undeformed theory to a unit-determinant field-dependent metric, or using a particular choice of moving frame on the soliton surface.

On three-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetry: maximally supersymmetric backgrounds and massive deformations

Using the $SO ({\cal N})$ superspace formulation for $\cal N$-extended conformal supergravity in three dimensions, we derive all maximally supersymmetric backgrounds in the ${\cal N} =4$ case. The specific feature of this choice is that the so-called super Cotton tensor $X^{IJKL} = X^{[IJKL]}$, which exists for ${\cal N} \geq 4$, is equivalent to the scalar $X$ defined by $X^{IJKL} = \varepsilon^{IJKL} X$. This scalar may be used as a deformation parameter. In the family of $(p,q)$ anti-de Sitter (AdS) superspaces with $p+q=4$, it is known that $X\neq 0$ exists only if $p=4$ and $q=0$. In general, the $(4,0)$ AdS superspaces are characterised by the structure group $SL(2,{\mathbb R}) \times SO (4)$ and their geometry is determined by two constant parameters, $S$ and $X$, of which the former determines the AdS curvature, while the $R$-symmetry curvature is determined by the parameters $(X+2S)$ and $(X-2S)$ in the left and right sectors of $SU(2)_{\rm L} \times SU(2)_{\rm R}$, respectively. Setting $S=0$ leads to the so-called deformed ${\cal N}=4$ Minkowski superspace ${\mathbb M}^{3|8}_X$ introduced thirteen years ago. We construct general interacting supersymmetric field theories in ${\mathbb M}^{3|8}_X$ and demonstrate that they originate as massive deformations of the following two families of ${\cal N} =4$ theories in standard Minkowski superspace ${\mathbb M}^{3|8}$: (i) ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal field theories; and (ii) ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theories in ${\mathbb M}^{3|8}$ which are not superconformal but possess the $R$-symmetry group $SU(2)_{\rm L} \times SU(2)_{\rm R}$. Extensions of the theories in (ii) to ${\mathbb M}^{3|8}_X$ necessarily contain Chern-Simons terms at the component level. We also demonstrate the generation of topologically massive ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theories from radiative corrections in the hypermultiplet sector.

Six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ Conformal Superspace

We develop a new off-shell formulation for six-dimensional conformal supergravity obtained by gauging the 6D $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ superconformal algebra in superspace. We provide the complete gauged algebra, which proves to be considerably constrained compared to other conformal superspaces constructed in the past. This formulation is employed to obtain the unique 6D $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ Bach tensor superfield, which describes the multiplet of equations of motions for conformal supergravity, by using a general ansatz fixed by truncation to 6D $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ results. We also translate some results into components for precise matching against the literature.

Higher-Spin Currents and Flows in Auxiliary Field Sigma Models

We study local, higher-spin conserved currents in integrable $2d$ sigma models that have been deformed via coupling to auxiliary fields. These currents generate integrability-preserving flows introduced by Smirnov and Zamolodchikov. For auxiliary field (AF) deformations of a free boson, we prove that local spin-$n$ currents exist for all $n$ and give recursion relations that characterize Smirnov-Zamolodchikov (SZ) flows driven by these currents. We then show how to construct spin-$2n$ currents in a unified class of auxiliary field sigma models with common structure -- including AF theories based on the principal chiral model (PCM), its non-Abelian T-dual, (bi-)Yang-Baxter deformations of the PCM, and symmetric space models -- for interaction functions of one variable, and describe SZ flows driven by any function of the stress tensor in these cases. Finally, we give perturbative solutions for spin-$3$ SZ flows in any member of our unified class of AF models with underlying $\mathfrak{su}(3)$ algebra. Part of our analysis shows that the class of AF deformations can be extended by allowing the interaction function to depend on a larger set of variables than has previously been considered.

On five-dimensional curvature squared supergravity and holography

In this work, we report the recent progress in obtaining new curvature-squared invariants in 5D, N=1 gauged minimal supergravity. We exhibit the structure of various composite multiplets that are pivotal in the construction. We also present the form of the gauged Riemann-squared and Gauss-Bonnet superinvariants in a dilaton-Weyl multiplet. As a first application of the new curvature squared invariants, we compute their corrections to holographic central charges and the Euclidean action of supersymmetric charged rotating black holes, exhibiting exact matching between the gravity and CFT results.

Conformal anomalies for (maximal) 6d conformal supergravity

We compute the conformal anomalies for 6d (2,0) conformal supergravity by direct calculation in component fields. The main novel results consist of the type-B anomaly coefficients for the gravitino and the 3-form, as well as their explicit quadratic action on some specific backgrounds. We also comment on the graviton contribution, whose Lagrangian is essentially given by the $\mathscr Q$-curvature. We confirm the expectation that, when coupling (2,0) conformal supergravity to 26 copies of the (2,0) tensor multiplet, the resulting theory is free of conformal anomalies. We also consider the conformal anomalies for its (1,0) truncation and confirm their relation with the chiral anomaly polynomial recently derived. For calculating the anomalies, we work with an Einstein on-shell background and make a factorised Ansatz for the operators governing the quadratic fluctuations. This reduces the calculation to evaluating heat-kernel coefficients of standard 2-derivative operators. We fix and check the Ansatz against the explicit evaluation of the component-field supergravity action in some cases.

Charged massless scalar fields in a charged $C$-metric black hole: Exact solutions, Hawking radiation, and scattering of scalar waves

We study Hawking radiation and wave scattering of charged scalar fields in a charged $C$-metric black hole background. The conformally invariant wave equation for charged scalar fields can be separated into radial and angular parts, each with five singularities. We first show that the radial and angular equations can be respectively transformed into the general Heun equation, and then we explore exact solutions of the radial Heun equation in terms of the local Heun functions and connection coefficients. Exact behaviors of the asymptotic wave functions are determined without approximations. We further apply the exact results to derive Hawking radiation, quasinormal modes and superradiance.

Auxiliary Field Sigma Models and Yang-Baxter Deformations

We combine the Yang-Baxter (YB) and bi-Yang-Baxter (bi-YB) deformations with higher-spin auxiliary field deformations to construct multi-parameter families of integrable deformations of the principal chiral model on a Lie group $G$ with semi-simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. In the YB case, our construction produces one integrable deformation for each pair $(\mathcal{R}, E)$, where $\mathcal{R}$ is an antisymmetric bilinear operator on $\mathfrak{g}$ obeying the modified classical Yang-Baxter equation and $E$ is a function of several variables. In the bi-YB case, the pair becomes a triplet $(\mathcal{R},\tilde{\mathcal{R}}, E)$, where $\tilde{\mathcal{R}}$ is another antisymmetric bilinear operator on $\mathfrak{g}$ and obeys the non-split inhomogeneous modified classical Yang-Baxter equation. We show that every model in these families is (weakly) classically integrable by exhibiting a Lax representation for their equations of motion.

${T\overline{T}}$-like Flows of Yang-Mills Theories

We study ${T\overline{T}}$-like deformations of $d>2$ Yang-Mills theories. The standard ${T\overline{T}}$ flows lead to multi-trace Lagrangians, and the non-Abelian gauge structures make it challenging to find Lagrangians in a closed form. However, within the geometric approach to ${T\overline{T}}$, we obtain the closed-form solution to the metric flow and stress-energy tensor, and show that instanton solutions are undeformed. We also introduce new symmetrised single-trace ${T\overline{T}}$-like deformations, whose solutions in $d=4$ include the non-Abelian Born-Infeld Lagrangian proposed by Tseytlin in 1997.

On 4D, ${\mathcal{N}=2}$ deformed vector multiplets and partial supersymmetry breaking in off-shell supergravity

Electric and magnetic Fayet-Ilioupulous (FI) terms are used to engineer partial breaking of ${\mathcal{N}=2}$ global supersymmetry for systems of vector multiplets. The magnetic FI term induces a deformation of the off-shell field transformations associated with an imaginary constant shift of the triplet of auxiliary fields of the vector multiplet. In this paper, we elaborate on the deformation of off-shell vector multiplets in supergravity, both in components and superspace. In a superconformal framework, the deformations are associated with (composite) linear multiplets. We engineer an off-shell model that exhibits partial local supersymmetry breaking with a zero cosmological constant. This is based on the hyper-dilaton Weyl multiplet introduced in arXiv:2203.12203, coupled to the SU(1,1)/U(1) special-Kähler sigma model in a symplectic frame admitting a holomorphic prepotential, with one compensating and one physical vector multiplet, the latter magnetically deformed.

Hyper-Dilaton Weyl Multiplet of 4D, ${\mathcal{N}}=2$ Conformal Supergravity

We define a new dilaton Weyl multiplet of ${\mathcal{N}}=2$ conformal supergravity in four dimensions. This is constructed by reinterpreting the equations of motion of an on-shell hypermultiplet as constraints that render some of the fields of the standard Weyl multiplet composite. The independent bosonic components include four scalar fields and a triplet of gauge two-forms. The resulting, so-called, hyper-dilaton Weyl multiplet defines a $24+24$ off-shell representation of the local ${\mathcal{N}}=2$ superconformal algebra. By coupling the hyper-dilaton Weyl multiplet to an off-shell vector multiplet compensator, we obtain one of the two minimal $32+32$ off-shell multiplets of ${\mathcal{N}}=2$ Poincaré supergravity constructed by Müller in 1986. On-shell, this contains the minimal ${\mathcal{N}}=2$ Poincaré supergravity multiplet together with a hypermultiplet where one of its physical scalars plays the role of a dilaton, while its three other scalars are dualised to a triplet of real gauge two-forms. Interestingly, a $BF$-coupling induces a scalar potential for the dilaton without a standard gauging.

Auxiliary Field Deformations of (Semi-)Symmetric Space Sigma Models

We generalize the auxiliary field deformations of the principal chiral model (PCM) introduced in arXiv:2405.05899 and arXiv:2407.16338 to sigma models whose target manifolds are symmetric or semi-symmetric spaces, including a Wess-Zumino term in the latter case. This gives rise to a new infinite family of classically integrable $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_4$ coset models of the form which are of interest in applications of integrability to worldsheet string theory and holography. We demonstrate that every theory in this infinite class admits a zero-curvature representation for its equations of motion by exhibiting a Lax connection.

Integrable Higher-Spin Deformations of Sigma Models from Auxiliary Fields

We construct a new infinite family of integrable deformations of the principal chiral model (PCM) parameterized by an interaction function of several variables, which extends the formalism of arXiv:2405.05899, and includes deformations of the PCM by functions of both the stress tensor and higher-spin conserved currents. We show in detail that every model in this class admits a Lax representation for its equations of motion, and that the Poisson bracket of the Lax connection takes the Maillet form, establishing the existence of an infinite set of Poisson-commuting conserved charges. We argue that the non-Abelian T-dual of any model in this family is classically integrable, and that T-duality "commutes" with a general deformation in this class, in a sense which we make precise. Finally, we demonstrate that these higher-spin auxiliary field deformations can be extended to accommodate the addition of a Wess-Zumino term, and we exhibit the Lax connection in this case.

T-Duality and $T \overline{T}$-like Deformations of Sigma Models

We initiate the study of the interplay between T-duality and classical stress tensor deformations in two-dimensional sigma models. We first show that a general Abelian T-duality commutes with the $T \overline{T}$ deformation, which can be engineered by a gravitational dressing. Then, by using an auxiliary field formulation of stress tensor deformations of the principal chiral model (PCM), we prove that non-Abelian T-duality and arbitrary $T \overline{T}$-like flows also commute for theories in this class. We argue that all such auxiliary field deformations of both the PCM and its T-dual are classically integrable.
